Revisit for an artists new publication, second time after the pandemic. Always leave one hour or two between exhibition reservations in Chelsea just to spend time in the store. Comprehensive collections in rare books. More excited to see these window installations on global democracy crisis right after the election ended. Keep the movement!

Hidden gem of a bookstore with a very unique and diverse selection, Ive never seen so many zines for purchase in one central location before! Organization is a tiny bit confusing/disorienting, but honestly kind of part of its charm.

This place make me believe in independed writing. It migth be a bit desorganized, but It is the magic of the store. They have real y original and independed publucations of a lot of small artist and if you exprore im sure u r going to find solid gold.

A pretty large venue housing eclectic, esoteric printed matter. This aint no Barnes & Noble. This aint even no Strand!! An art and book lovers way to spend hours and hours, enraptured. This is truly an only in New York place.

Such a nice bookstore that carries classics (relative to design) and smaller prints that support small businesses/artists! Their website also has so many resources for printing types and services around NYC+beyond.

I adore Printed Matter and its unmatched collection of artists books-- not so much the glitzy books about artists, but the unique, absurd and wonderful handmade books by artists, writers and bookmakers. A book showing the covers of industrial handbooks? Of course! Photocopied zines from the 80s? Yaaassss!! So many insane beautiful works that will make you smile, laugh, feel inspired. Get thee to Printed Matter.

Amazing selection of art book (15,000 in fact) and zines and an interesting small gallery space. Books are categorised, with useful sections on selected publishers and a shelf stocking last copies of titles about to sell out!Wish we had a similar store in London, as it seems to have cultured a nice community. Not so many design related books, but it’s maybe not that kind of store.

Ive heard many many good things about this book store they specialize in art books both books about artists and books by artists. Its a unique place well worth the visit you wont regret it.

Amazing one of a kind bookstore filled with classic printings of progressive, reflective, and encouraging printed materials. Always remember a few dollars im cash to donate when you inevitably read a book you just couldnt put down. Worth traveling a few hours for if books are your thing.

Very engaging and important material but it does have a very white and neoliberal atmosphere which makes it difficult to enjoy being there.

If you love artist books, plan on spending at least an hour here. Its an incredible collection.

This is a one if a kind shop is all kinds of printed materials: books, zines, posters, t-shirts, and various art. Really great collection, knowledgeable staff, large space (much larger than their old location!). Slightly difficult to get to, but worth the trip.

Art, artists, artists books. The only drawback is that youll leave printed matter knowing that you missed so much, and that you only have a single lifetime to spend exploring the beautiful minds and ideas therein. Must visit for any searching souls and way walkers.

If wizards were real, they would shop at Printed Matter. This tightly packed gallery and book store is the essential art book store that all other book stores (MOMA im looking at you) aspire to. I have never left the store without wishing I was significantly more capable of spending thousands of dollars a year on books. I have also never left the store uninspired.There is something unbelievably liberating when you see 15,000 unique pieces: collections of ideas that are both precious, and worthless at the same time. They are meaningful or as dumb as you make them - and unlike most clothing stores they eschew trends and tastes. The unbelievably democratic collection has oddball works ranging from scientific and geometric proofs all the way to murder mysteries...but every book is something youd probably never see anywhere else.If you have a creative in your life, this is ground zero for birthdays and Christmas. If you yourself are a creative, do yourself a favor and go.

Buy it or dare try to reshelve it ... every book in here is a friend

Their open submission policy provides for a rich, diverse selection with items at every price point (practically anywhere from 50¢ to $500) and niche intellectual interest.
