I visited for the first time over the weekend, and I loved this shop! The staff is incredibly friendly and fun to talk to. And the atmosphere in the store is awesome. Its a small shop, but the ceilings are so tall that it feels like a big, open book store. I thought their collection of books was stellar and I cant wait to go back.
A single big room lined with new and used books, mystery and mystery-adjacent, from $1 used pulps to $100 collectibles to first editions kept under glass. Knowledge staff and great stock at fair prices. Ever mystery (and book) buff must see!
No organization that i could wrap my head around, and while the setup is cute and novel... its overwhelming for a neurodivergent like myself
Omg absolutely love this place!! Definitely made it into my essential NYC stops! Theyre filled to the literal brim with just mystery books, all in great condition. Some new, some signed, some first editions. An entire wall of Sherlock Holmes, a beautiful collection of Agatha Christie (I wish I could afford the whole thing 💕), some little mini books written by the staff. The guys working there are really nice and clearly love what they do and its just so cute! I mean ROLLING LADDERS! My cousin asked one of the guys if she could climb one and he said yes, but first and I thought oh boy, here come the rules and he just goes let me make sure its properly secured for you, just so great. See for yourself, highly recommend them. I bought And Then There Were None and they stamped their logo in the cover, I love it!
Great shop with a wide selection! The staff are very knowledgeable and friendly. Fun place to browse but definitely take advantage of the staff and their recommendations!
Good little bookshop. I went in at 11:30am and it was quite. There is a small area to sit down and browse. The books are new and used which I personally like and the books are all reasonably priced. The shelves go up high so they have ladders to reach books. I love the mellow environment. The staff is also helpful but not attentive which is great. I dont like people following me around, its uncomfortable. They also have a sale area which is cool.
Great place. Bought two Jim Thompson books.
Knowledgeable staff. Great selection and recommendations
It’s a cliche to say “hidden gem,” but this is exactly what this place is. I can’t believe there is a bookstore dedicated to just crime and mystery books 🖤 It’s not a genre I am very well read in, but as a writer, it’s so nice to find that there are spaces that specialize in it for your continued education (and enjoyment). Will definitely be back. 🧟♀️
Hidden Gem!Paper backs, hard covers and first editions by all the big and minor mystery masters surround you in this quiet haven filled with books. The people that work there are well read and incredibly helpful.
This bookshop is truly a one-of-a-kind gem. And for two large reasons: (1) it contains a significant collection of rare books, as well as a large selection, all while providing the sort of small-intimate bookstore you dream of visiting. (2) I had the pleasure of meeting the manager, Thomas Wickersham. He was knowledgeable, friendly, kind & encouraged even us small time/beginning authors to consider coming in for our own book signing (there are stipulations involved, but if you want the experience it would be well worth it).On this particular night, after attending the midtown INTERNATIONAL THRILLER WRITERS conference, I faced the pouring rain, sweltering humidity, and crowded subways (bc a cab would take 3 times the time and 10 times the fare), to attend a very special event.I had the unique opportunity to hear Adrian McKinty talk with author legend Don Winslow about Adrians new book THE CHAIN. They were both engaging, funny, insightful, inspiring and all-around entertaining. The vibe was sweet (minus one drunk in the audience who loudly whispered 80% of the time), and the questions were thoughtful. All in all, it was a truly delightful experience. Thanks Adrian, Don and thanks, Thomas. Ill be sure to visit again the next time Im in town!
My favorite book store in all of New York. Cannot wait until my next visit there! Thank you kind owner for our visit. Roger Browning the author of the novel The Reckoning of Rance, now out on Amazon.
The store is full of mystery novels, The staff was very helpful
A very cozy bookshop..could have stayed all day..👀🎭
Smoke and mirrors by Neil Gaiman - welcome to the world of Neil Gaiman, a world where the impossible is possible...14.01.2018292DIGNITIES:Original presentation of the material, interesting stories, unique atmosphereDISADVANTAGES:The abundance of obscene language spoils the impressionHello, my friends! Good luck to all!I admit that my acquaintance with the work of Neil Gaiman began not so long ago, although I heard a lot about him. Gaiman is called a wizard, and its hard not to agree. After American gods, I wanted to read other works of the author.Perhaps the book Smoke and mirrors I would recommend reading to all fans of the famous Englishman-postmodernist Neil Gaiman, primarily because of the indescribable and unique atmosphere.💋💋💋💞💞💞💞💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋
Nice bookstore specializing in mystery books
Incredible place to shop! Plan to spend hours there if you are lucky enough to be there
Really fantastic bookstore, and very well stocked. Only takes a few minutes of looking at the shelves to realize how many gems are here. Very friendly staff and clearly a much beloved spot. I look forward to returning.
I visited the bookshop during my holiday in NY some days ago. Being a fan of detective stories I have to say the stores selection did not disappoint in the least. As you enter the place it really looks huge. The shelves go up to the ceiling and there are some ladders there as well. Whole shelves were devoted to Sherlock Holmes, others to Agatha Christie, there were Ellery Queen stories as well but less known authors and books have not been neglected either. Even the used books looked like new. The owner was very helpful and kind. Absolutely recommended.
Stunning collections! Service is good too!
Unique niche bookstore with knowledgeable and helpful staff. Well organized and clean; many autographed books on hand. Well worth a visit for any book lover but especially awesome for mystery fans.
Oh my, this is one of those bookstores you think only exists in literature,; floor to ceiling well organized shelves. I walked in wanting new series. Steve asked what authors and time periods I like, walked to the shelves, picked up four authors, invited me to curl up and peruse them. I am now immersed. This is one of my new NYC highlights!
A lovely and quiet place in the lower part of Manhattan, great amount of books you can buy and they even sell signed ones. Also you can choose staffs favourite ones. Simply a beautiful way how to spend some money on books.
A book lovers paradise. I went here during my holiday to NYC. I could have spent the whole holiday looking through every book. Loses a star as the staff werent very welcoming and kept their heads down without making eye contact, even when I was buying my books! Shame really, as there is nothing better than talking to someone who loves books as much as you in a bookshop and feeling the love/energy from another book enthusiast. Also, they missed out on recommending books and making an extra sale, something I did when working as a bookseller myself. Maybe they feel they dont need to bother.
The absolute best in the mystery genre! The titles on offer are endless, and staff members are not only friendly and very helpful, but quite knowledgeable on a range of authors within the genre. I highly recommend this exceptional bookshop.
A gem of a bookstore, dont miss it! Michael and staff offer supreme customer service. If its not on the shelf, theyll order it for you. Its a fun place to browse and hang out. You wont leave empty handed.
Distinct collection of books.
You could spend hours here! Quaint, cozy shop with every mystery author you know and a hundred others too!
The Mysterious Bookshop is my go-to bookshop and an excellent example of a great small business. Their rows are stacked high with many kinds of books for all ages and interests. The staff is very helpful, and they can quickly locate whatever books you may be looking for. I love The Mysterious Bookshop and would recommend it to anyone looking for a top tier bookshop that’s NOT a chain bland store!
One of the coolest places in NYC. Got a nice haul of Nancy Drew books here once. Very cozy and friendly. They have a great newsletter too.
When you step into this bookstore, you almost forget that youre in the heart of New York. This bookstore has shelves lined to the ceiling and a comfortable sitting area for those who just wish to read; it makes you feel at home. The shop only stocks genres similar to mystery, horror, and thriller. The workers are very passionate and helpful, especially if you are looking for something specific. I was lucky to stumble upon this place.
Very cozy bookshop catering to crime/mystery. I come here for the Q&As with some of my favorite writers. The staff is super friendly and knowledgable. Wish I lived closer so I could get here more often!
The most amazing indie bookstore in all of New York City. An icon that recently celebrated its fortieth anniversary. Knowledgeable, friendly, helpful staff and special events with author talks and book signings all the time.
Real book store stock up now before the pop hits the fan again
Wow! What a wonderful store with friendly staff and a relaxing atmosphere to browse and relax with a plethora of signed books. The Sherlock section is extensive and included a Manga edition of modern Holmes with BBC actors that I purchased along with a Real Reader of a Poe story, Murder on the Orient Express, and a graphic novel where Sherlock meets Dracula. Unfortunately they don’t offer teacher discounts. Still it was a most pleasurable experience with four new books for my students classroom library.
Very peaceful environment. Offers best customer service and the collection of book were very outstanding. Will shop again.
This place is fabulous. They carry an enormous selection of crime-related novels. In addition to carrying a wide selection, they also carry first edition (and first printings), signed copies etc. They also have a special Sherlock Holmes section with rare editions. As if that werent enough, they also create their own material - collections of short stories and more. Everyone working there is a voracious reader with in-depth knowledge of their selection and more. The atmosphere is great - tall, dark bookshelves with classic library ladders. I love this place.
Best place Ive been in my 70+ years for current & used mysteries and adventure fiction. Stop by every time I come to the Big Apple.
This is a fantastic find! If you are looking for the old hard to get mystery book series, this place probably has it! I found my first Edition Dr Who books here and we did not have to spend an arm and a leg. I like the neighborhood where it is at. The owners are nice and leave you alone LOL!
Magical place.. just step inside and you can feel like the air changes around you. Its a books world from head to toes. And you just dont want to leave this wonderful place. Greatly recommend visiting this bookstore.
Great place to get a book. Everybody’s so nice. If you’re on a budget they have a rack near the door
This is quite a picturesque bookstore. Shelves are stacked floor-to-ceiling with old and new book. It looks like something out of a movie. The left side of the store holds all the new books, while the right has a large selection of old, rare, and autographed books. Its a great place to shop for a gift. Keep in mind, they specifically cater to mystery/crime/thriller novels.
Just like its name, this bookstore only sell and accept donations for mystery, detective and crime books. Its clean and has a vibe like an old library. The location is within walking distance from World Trade Center.
Favorite bookshop in the whole city! The absolute best selection and friendly service. A must if you love mystery books
Support your local bookstores! This a great little place with a very wide selection of books in every type of mystery category you can imagine! They also have book readings and signings!
Its a nice clean well lit place to buy books...
Great place with a wide selection of mysteries covering a wide time period and sub-genres. A knowledgable staff and inviting environment make this a bucket list stop for mystery lovers.
Great local bookstore in the heart of Tribeca. Helpful and knowledgable staff, good selection of novels and of course mystery/thriller books.Support your local book stores!!!
The Best Mystery Bookshop there Is!!!! The Bookshop is Very Clean, Well Stocked, Great & Helpful Staff, and they are Know their Titles !!! I could live there....
By far my favorite bookstore. Every time I have visited they had the books to full fill my appetite. Also, they are very knowledgeable on the mystery/ thriller/ detective/ hard-boiled detective fiction. In other words if you are looking to solve muder or any crime this is where you go 😉
Very nice and helpful staff. Books from floor to roof, wonderful. Didnt have everything I wanted though.
I Iove this bookshop because I have been a fan of the criminal novel since childhood. If you are a fan of any kind of mystery, crime novel, thriller, Sleuthing, detective, pulp fiction-then this is the store for you. They have great books, knowledge, and prices.
Wonderful library-style bookstore focussing on mysteries, premier location, great staff, great gift ideas...
Sherlock Holmes fans will go nuts in here-an entire wall is dedicated to the character! Lots and lots of signed editions. Great place for those interested in mystery, crime, detective etc. books.
Lovely nook of a bookstore, love the reading selections and the good service
A better one-stop-shop for your Mysterious (see what I did there?) you wont be able to find!
Neighborhood gem with great books for all ages. Cozy and charming shop.
Hang out here, sit on the floor and just read for hours, buy a pile of interesting books. Great place.
A very special place with a ginormous selection of mystery and crime novels and a very knowledgeable staff.
Recommend, even for those not fans of crime and mystery novels. Staff was knowledgeable and professional.
Great selection and some hard to find stuff. Could browse for days 😄
I got real and meaningful advice on what to read. Unbeatable inventory and many new mysteries to discover in here.
Real books on paper! Very helpful staff, cool atmosphere. Worth a visit.
This is a truly special place for the mysterious bibliophile.
Wonderfully quaint bookshop with many great mystery titles.
Not the best - I ordered a book from here. All details were correct, they took the order & I was given confirmation that all was fine. I logged into the site a couple of days later to check delivery status & found theyd deleted the order without even notifying me.
A real find for both readers and collectors of mystery books. Great sales staff that are both friendly, helpful and informed.
Great store with a large selection and very nice and knowledgeable employees.
Interesting collection of books. Note: they are all books in the mystery genre (if the name didnt give it away).
I attended a friends book reading at The Mysterious Bookstore. Its a lovely small bookstore. The event was nicely organized and the staff welcoming.
I love the environment, staff and selection of books they got
Incredible place and strange and unusual books. Must go if around
Forget the criticism – The Mysterious Bookshop is still the best specialty bookstore in the U.S. and Otto Penzler remains (after 40 years) the most experienced and knowledgeable mystery bookseller of all time. Apart from Fred Bass and the Strand Bookstore at 12th and Broadway, Ottos store is worth a visit – and if youre lucky, youll see some very rare mystery books. Dan Barber, Lansing, Michigan.
Really want to love this place but the staff (or this one guy in particular) treats it like an exclusive antiques shop and that its a chore or waste of his time to answer my question and help me browse. Love the guest authors, screenings and signings they organize though and I enjoy browsing their selection for a great read.
Very fun bookstore! The staff is so friendly and they give wonderful recommendations.
Beautiful store and very friendly men working there. Great selection!
This is my favorite bookstore in the neighborhood. It is super chill and the people are super nice. They have a pretty large variety of books along with a little section for cards and Rick nacks. They do a lot of author events too -we saw Junot Diaz in the past. This a great place to stop in if you are waiting for your movie next door or after dinner on the block. Also, dont forget about the book annex they have a couple of doors down.
Old school specialty book store. Worth the trip
I didnt shop here although the staff seemed helpful. A good photo op!
They dont let you return, despite what the receipt says, even same day. Exchanges only.Interesting collection.
Love mysteries? You want it, they got it.
Largest selection of detective fiction on the planet knowledgable staff
Great books, great help, great location. May it never leave the neighborhood. NYC needs more shops like this.
Great place to search for a new mystery book. Or autograph copy of your favorite mystery writer.
I adore this most mysterious of bookshops and hope it continues into the next dimension!
Great place to Go for mysteries and thrillers, and finding staff knowledgeable about authors, plots, and genres. They also have a collection of hard to find works and extremely limited editions as well.
Bookstores will never go away so long as there are nice, independent places like this with a staff that cares.
