I visited on Saturday night and there was a line going out the store, but the turn around time was quick and it only took 10 minutes to order our ice cream. The ice cream was okay. I had the vanilla ice cream with chocolate dip. I didnt find it much more interesting than other places and it was a bit too pricey to add additional toppings. The ice cream alone was 3.99 and other toppings including chocolate dip was 1.00.
I didnt know what to expect when we went to Big Gay Ice Cream Shoppe. Judging by the name, I knew to expect something awesome and likely involving ice cream. Largely they delivered. The main offering here is flavored soft-serve ice cream covered in a variety of awesome toppings. I treated myself to a Key-Lime Pie Sundae. It was tart and just the right size. I have had better (I once had a Lemon Meringue Pie Sundae at another shop that was incredible), but this was nothing to sneeze at. I suspect the other offerings might be even better.
A really cute looking ice cream store. The name obviously will draw you in. The lines are long but the the service staff are friendly and amazing. The specials have double meaning names and are really good. I like the flavor contrast of the Salty Pimp.Ice Cream wise, I would say it is very good but with so many options in NYC it relies on regulars and people drawn in by the name and ambiance of the store.
Had to go to say I went.It was quite... underwhelming. Im not sure if it is this location specifically but... What a bummer.Ice cream is okay, but dont expect a thick, creamy ice cream. Small portions, cone or bowl and even sundae....And, of course, pricey.Just to let you know--this is a small location! I do not advise more than a group of 3, especially during peak hours! You will not get a seat!Maybe the other locations are different? Ill have to see...
Big gay ice cream is the best ice cream I had. Workers are very friendly and nice. The ice cream isn’t expensive at all for a big waffle cone is around $13.00 but it’s a decent sized cone. 100/10 greatly recommend
The only cool thing about this place is the name (that’s what drew me in), it’s just another tourist trap. In the warmer months lines can get very long outside... but there really isn’t anything special about this place. They have the audacity of calling that cheap soft serve “ice cream”. Everything is vanilla soft serve based. It gets so busy that the liquid mix doesn’t have the time to freeze so as soon as they gave me my “ice cream”, it was dripping all over my clothes. There is little variety. You pay $7 for the name. If you want cheap vanilla soft serve, go to McDonald’s, it’s $1.
Their dulce de leche sauce is a definite must try! The cones were smaller than I expected based on pictures I had saw online, but the flavor is definitely there. They have nutella coated waffle cones, which I had expected to have a thin layer of nutella like chocolate dipped waffle cones, but the nutella layer is actually very thick, like someone spread it on using a spatula. They serve icecream in the soft serve style, and the base is actually much more rich than I had expected from a soft serve.
Their ice cream is the best. Friendly staff with great service.
Went here during Pride 2020 with my buddies. Good vibes and is across from Stonewall.
I was so excited to come from seeing on Food Network but due to being full from the tapas I just shared prior I couldnt indulge! This is why Im giving my stars so low because I only experienced this through my friends senses. She was not WOWed, I do want to return to make my own decision. The line was not horrible prior to entry, considering the heat was oppressive. We waited a little more than 15 minutes. The seating is poor and sparse in the shop.
Cant wait to visit again. So many flavours to choose from and the taste is absolutely delicious, so good I had to go back again. Best ice cream in town
I have never heard of this place before coming in so a huge waiting line was a surprise to me (it was around 10 pm on a friday). It took us about half an hour to get ice cream. The place itself is very small so when we did get an ice cream we had to sit right in the way of the waiting line. Ice cream was good; however, I personally didnt think it was worth waiting that long for.
Loved it and the cashier just-o (i know I’m probably saying it wrong, sorry) was great and loved his attitude
Tried two of their ice cream flavors and frankly speaking they are not that great, they are ok at best. The one with peanut butter cups in it is weird, I wouldn’t try it again. The shop seems ok, I like the bench they have near the entrance - it’s nice to have a seat on it during the sunny day. Overall: it’s ok, but not worth going to that districts specifically to try this ice cream.
The name and vibe of the shop are what makes it special. The ice cream is not worth the long lines. The flavor of the yellow cake soft serve was spot on, but the $8 sundae had as much ice cream as a kids cone. The pint of salty pimp was disappointing. It was light and ice crystally without much flavor.
I can see that there’s usually a line because with a name like “Big Gay Ice Cream,” you could have big and fun expectations. I actually found the offerings quite limited although I enjoyed what I got. I guess what I’m saying is: if there isn’t a line, it can’t hurt to try it. If there is a line, you’re better off trying something else.
I was hoping this location had regular ice cream scoops but it seems like they only had soft serve ice cream. The soft serve was still good
Loved the vibe and music, and of course the ice cream was over the top and amazing
Came here because it was a must when I was in NYC, it was a while ago and I forgot to do the review so here I am.It was during the summer when I was here and walking around in the summer heat in NYC ice cream was a must. It is a small cute shop, there are good options and the line moved quickly. But the actual ice cream didnt leave a lasting impression on me. It was okay, nothing special. The topping options are where it gets a little more exciting. There is a lot of hype and a little to deliver on the hype. I would pop in if you are in the area, but I wouldnt go too out of your way to get here.
You really cant go wrong by eating an absurd amount of sugar and dairy. It is how I make myself in a better mood and often works. (Should ice cream not do the trick then I move on to popcorn - but not kettle corn or microwave popcorn - dont get me started... I am talking, melt a stick of butter and pass the salt because, who knows, I might die sooner than later and I dont really want to live to be a 110 the way I have treated my body. Anyways...)Obviously it is a little over the top, but the place seems supportive of their younger-leaning employees. The staff have character and are just the right amount of sassy to leave you feeling like you matter - in an insignificant way, sure, but this is ice cream and the stakes are low.I would give it 4.5 stars but google wont allow such nonsense. Because it is a tourist destination, it does miss the mark of perfection.
Cute ice cream place in the west village. Just a run of the mill soft serve place thats quirky in design and decor. Is it the best ice cream i’ve had...NO but ice cream is ice cream what you’re paying for is the hype and its totally instagrammable. I would still recommend this place for y’all to check out.
Entered near eleven, it wasnt packed. It has a good feel to it.
Good but not necessarily worth the price or the wait on line. I was under the impression that this ice cream was a revelation but its just regular soft serve.... The toppings are pretty good. I got the American Globs (vanilla ice cream sea salt dark chocolate pretzels covered in chocolate dip).
I really really really liked my ice cream. I had the Dorothy, which was delicious. Dont want to rate them poorly cause by rating the ice cream cone itself, they deserve a good rate. Their service, on the other hand, wasnt good. They need to gain some manners.I understand that they are overwhelmed because of the amount of customers that come in every day but they own it to the people to be AT LEAST just polite enough to say hi to them. They didnt even salute me. The convo was something like What do you want, we replied and she signaled with her hand for us to give her the card, thats it.Ice cream itself deserves a good rate but they need to teach the employees some manners, or at least to show some smiles.
One of Manhattans must-visit ice cream places. Located close to the historic Stonewall Inn, this is a hip young place full of rainbows and sprinkles and a fun vibe. We got the rocky road which was a chocolate ice cream with marshmallows and chocolate chunks as well as the vanilla cone with the cherry dip. Both ice creams were good but I preferred the chocolate one. We skipped the sprinkles but feel free to get those if you like. An overall perfect summer experience.
I love this place! The staff are usually attentive, professional, and friendly. The Ice cream choices are delicious and the items have fun names. The only downside was no bathroom..I would definitely recommend the Big Gay Bars Cream.
Not worth the money for quality of ice-cream. Flavor choice retains a star
Ive been to big gay ice cream twice. The soft serve is nothing to write home about, pretty standard but very overpriced. This time I got the key lime sauce on top and it brought the price of a standard cone of vanilla soft serve to over $8. I would not recommend this simply based on price. If you have a hankering for ice cream and dont mind the price, go support big gay ice cream, but be mindful if youre tight for cash.
This place is absolutely amazing. Its been a well run business since before the shop (back when Doug ran the truck) and this store is just as great! Excellent customer service, amazing ice cream choices (and theyll customize to your liking). I cant recommend this place enough!!
Long line at times but great ice cream and genuinely friendly staff
Over priced. Staff totally lost and clueless. Wont last long.
Lovely little soft serve ice cream shop. Fast service, polite staff. Prices are reasonable too considering its NYC. Got a chocolate cone for little over $4 but the staff swirled it 5 or 6 layers high! The ice cream itself was nice and smooth, and it was on the more solid side as far as soft serve goes (probably helps with getting the toppings or chocolate dips). The flavor was a little weaker and not as rich as I had hoped for. Large variety of toppings available too as well as special cones, shakes, and floats. Highly recommend for a quick stop after dinner or any soft serve craving anytime of year!
