I was really excited to go here because of the great reviews but was pretty unimpressed. The tiramisu was too sweet and kind of watery, and the ice cream sandwich is made with a wafer which makes it easy to hold but doesnt add anything taste/texture-wise. The ice cream itself was good, but I dont think well be coming back.
We were so disappointed with The Little One and it was definitely overrated. There is currently take out and delivery available but no outdoor dining. We ordered their Hogicha Kakigori with $6 + tax. When we ordered, the staff told us there was to-go only, which was fine for us. However, we were so upset with it’s super mini size with no ingredient but only milk foam on top.We didn’t understand how they could serve to-go only without using a deeper bowl and a cover. The Kakigori looked adorable but it wasn’t the typical to-go concept for us.We ended up finishing our order in front of the store in a few minutes. The shaved ice was decent and the milk foam was creamy.Overall, we won’t recommend it when neither outdoor nor indoor dining are available now. Maybe we will give it a chance next year.
Had such a wonderful experience with “The Little One” the beautiful cakes are so tasty and beautifully crafted. So light and fresh! We ordered two cakes to go for a dinner party and it was a hit! Everyone loved it and we can’t wait to order a few of these amazing cakes for a bridal shower we are planning for this year. So delicate and perfect. We had the strawberry shortcake and bean cake! Definitely give it try.
Man I laughed when my ice cream sandwich came out, it was smaller than my palm and I’m tiny. Wish I saw pics of the wafer “sandwich” beforehand bc I didn’t enjoy the almost stale taste. The ice cream flavor wasn’t noticeable until it had warmed up enough to biteable FYI. The shaved ice was better, I was surprised by how much the syrup tasted like chrysanthemum.
We ordered hojicha shaved ice and chrysanthemum honey ice cream. Hands down the best ice cream in the whole Manhattan area, because i really dig for the chrysanthemum taste. Hope the hojicha ice shave could be served on a larger bowl, yet it was still amazing.
This place is true to its name. Tiny Japanese dessert shop with minimalistic decor. I wanted the black sesame monaka ice cream sandwich, but they were sold out. I asked for a recommendation and they pointed me to the buckwheat monaka ice cream sandwich with chocolate fudge and toasted grout. Did not disappoint. Not overbearingly sweet, and a great balance of flavor and texture.
Pleasant, minimalist and simple decor and very nice desserts! The decor is reminescent of Muji with the light wood and white walls, natural feel. Very clean cut. Reasonably priced, especially for the quality of desserts you get. The ice cream monaka and dorayaki were between $4.50-$5.50 if I recall correctly, and kakigori (Japanese shaved ice) was ~$7.00. All the desserts have a more subtle sweetness level; do not come here if you are expecting a very decadent dessert. These desserts are much more delicate and very refined. I had the pleasure of trying the following: Corn Ice Cream Monaka with Like Zest, Parsnip Ice Cream Monaka with Chocolate and Burnt Honey Caramel, the Apple Dorayaki which features marscapone cream and apple confit as well as apple slices, and the Sweet Potato Dorayaki. I also had the malted spiced hot chocolate! Everything was very good; my favorite was the Apple Dorayaki by far. It had a great balance and variety of textures. The corn monaka was more settle but had a lovely texture, the wafer was perfect. I enjoyed the Parsnip monaka as well but wasnt a fan of the chocolate; I personally dont like chocolate with ice cream as it makes the chocolate cold and harder to taste. But the flavor of the Parsnip ice cream was delightful. The sweet potato dorayaki did not have as much textural variety as the Apple Dorayaki but was still tasty. I liked the spiced hot chocolate a lot; it was reminiscent of a chai latte. You can tell that they use high quality ingredients in their food and that a lot of thought has been put into these desserts. The part I appreciated the most was how varied and different the selection was here - no generic flavors or flavor profiles so it was nice to see new things! My friend and I actually had gotten one round of desserts at first and then decided to try even more desserts because we were so intrigued. Overall I really enjoyed coming here and definitely want to come back! I have already recommended it to a couple of friends.
Wonderful Japanese dessert cafe. The delicious monaka ice cream sandwiches have delicate, creative flavors such as parsnip and are not too sweet - although it would probably be better without the chocolate shell. Kakigori is also well done, with finely shaved ice and good flavor choices.I also recommend the slightly sweet cucumber lime soda. It’s one of those things you’ll crave days later. The only thing I didn’t care for was the dorayaki. Although the pastry part was well made, the nonstandard filling takes away from the experience. I’d prefer if the main ingredient was anpan, possibly with some additions to that. There’s nothing like this in NYC at the moment, which is surprising considering how popular monaka ice cream is in Japan. Prices are extremely reasonable considering the quality.
This is a really nice Japanese place serving a handful of Japanese deserts and drinks. Everything that we got was very good and made well, with great attention to detail. I would definitely go back again to try their shaved ice.
I ordered the strawberry kakigori and it was amazing! My first bites were not too creamy, and I enjoyed that. Inside was a lot of strawberry and syrup and it was a completely different flavor. Once I reached the bottom, a lot had melted, leaving a very creamy and icy treat! It was really tasty and Id get it again. It was very flavorful, fun, and new experience for me!
I stopped by here after discovering they sold hojicha tiramisu this past weekend. The tiramisu consists of hojicha mascarpone with layers of spongecake. A small tray costs $13.50. You can definitely taste the hojicha in the tiramisu as it was also really sweet. I ended up eating this with hot green tea. The cream was subtle and was not sweet, so the soaked sponge cake definitely complimented it.I used to come here years ago for their shaved ice which was also delicious. I really like how tea taste comes through strong, and its not artificially sweet. The place itself is small, and they have not fully open for indoor dining. Service was easy and quick.
I got matcha hot chocolate and a taro dorayakiThe hot chocolate was decent, however it had way too much foam and the marshmallows were thick and unnecessary, especially without a utensil. The taro dorayaki was interesting. Very unique flavor. The interior is very pretty. However, it would be nice if there were outlets by the seating area.
Delicious desserts, sweet decor, great service!
I’ve been here three times. I was looking for shaved ice this summer that is near my home. I used to go to Sweet moments which is more Korean style bingsui but it’s about 15 min walk and I just wanted to get out of the house because I work from home at times. I just walked around and came across this cute little place! I almost missed it because of the commotion in and out the waiting area for interstate buses next door. I’m glad I paid attention! It’s very near the East Broadway F and not too far away from the M and J Essex subway station if you’re coming from outside the neighborhood! The kakigori is so fluffy. The matcha oat kakigori has been my consistent order, will try the other flavors in the future!
My favorite dessert place in the world! The flavors they create are absolutely amazing—hojicha tiramisu, pear and yuzu chiffon cake, chrysanthemum ice cream sandwich, hojicha kakigori to name a few. You can taste and see the amount of detail, care, and love they put into each dessert they make.
Quietly someTimes Even for book reading
Amazing food best place in the entire world!!
A very small dessert shop that serves a pretty extensive menu. Small servings but good quality items. They have everything from cold to hot drinks, shaved ice desserts, ice cream sandwiches and so on. Good place to go to catch up after dinner.
Had the peach kakigori this time (and the hojicha last time). The foamy cream worked well with the peach compote. It does melt fast though, so when ordering, be sure to make a bee-line to the benches at Seward Park or the ones along Canal near Ludlow.
Came here for the first time and ordered the strawberry kakigori. Pretty good place for simple Kakigori (japanese shaved ice). What I meant simple as in easy to replicate flavors/ingredients without messing up. The ice here doesnt melt in your mouth as easily compared to Bonsai. Also, not as much flavors compared to Bonsai- in which wowed me at my first bite. This place did not. May return to try their matcha.
Very decent Japanese shaved ice place. You could taste the difference of ice. It melts so nicely in mouth along with cream. Price is fair but it is a bit off location. Worth to check out if you are nearby but I probably wouldn’t willing to take 20 min to just walk to there.
Absolutely lovely desserts and wonderfully friendly staff too! My girlfriend and I came by late yesterday evening and were treated very hospitably as we ordered, and enjoyed our cakes and tea. Much thanks to the young lady behind the counter yesterday evening for the excellent experience!
Really nice place and very friendly service. The hojicha tiramisu is amazing and the hojicha kakigori was very refreshing. Next time will try the matcha options.
The hongjicha tiramisu is absolutely delicious
This has become my favorite dessert spot. Their unique flavors and Japanese style shaved ice is amazing and cannot be found anywhere else in the city. It is clear that the owners take great pride in their menu. The quality ingredients used, focus on presentation, and minimalist decor makes for a wonderfully sweet experience. The Little One brings a breath of fresh air to the dessert scene by offering something new to try aside from the many typical ice cream shops. My personal favorite is the strawberry and the matcha shaved ice.
I love this place!!!!!! They have great kakigori! I went here in the summer it was perfect! I had cookies and cream kakigori while my wife had a mango one. Our friend had a strawberry one. They were all delicious. It looks large but its just ice so even someone quite small could eat a whole one. Its perfect for dessert after a dinner or a date or meeting with friends. The place is pretty small so seats can fill up fast. But Im so glad we have kakigori options in NYC. Service is great. Very friendly and kind! Also very delicious!
Im so glad we checked out this little gem in Chinatown that makes beautiful Japanese style shaved ice (kakigori). We had the hojicha flavor which was delicious and gorgeous to look at. Cute, small shop with limited seating and friendly counter service, plus some fun art displayed (also for sale!)
Nice new coffee/tea/dessert spot. The shaved ice desserts looked amazing. No bathrooms here though.
Get the kakigori. The shaved ice here is actually comparable to Japan! Super light and flavorful. Theres even jelly at the bottom of the ice!Cute shop with great desserts.
Literally blown my mind away...I ordered the matcha oat snow and everything was perfect.. it was perfectly sweet with matcha flavor that is not overwhelming, it had some crunchy toppings and chewy matcha jelly that pairs so so well with the snow. the presentation was so beautifully done from the wooden tray and forks to the colors and shape of the desert. (I swear Japanese ppl do everything so perfect and beautiful) Not only was the desert amazing, I had a chance to chat with the owner and he was super nice and recommended places for us tourist to visit. I was very upset that I discovered this place on my last day in nyc ... plz open up a shop in fl!! ❤️❤️❤️
This place was cute. My friends said the shaved ice was amazing and were still obsessing about it days later. I got the corn ice cream sandwich and it was underwhelming with a barely-there corn flavor.I would give them 3 stars because they have 1) a ten dollar credit minimum when all of their items cost 5-8 dollars, and they will only stamp your stamp card when your purchase is over 10 dollars. Both just seem like cheap ways to make you purchase more. But the guy working at the counter gave my friend a stamp anyway for her 7 or 8 something shaved ice purchase. Nice guy.
Wonderful Japanese desserts!! Unlike any other dessert shop in NYC. They offer dorayaki and kakigori in experimental flavors. All of the drinks and desserts are delicious. It’s totes a hidden gem. Love u little one!!!
Simple and delicious. A bit pricey but its so yummy... Totally worth it. No bathroom to use though.
Food looks very pretty but very hard to eat without messing it up, also closed a little too earlier.
These are good people, they take great care with their desserts, not too sweet, beautiful balance. Go give them some love.
One of my favorite dessert spots in the city. Get the hojicha kakigori.
Cozy spot to enjoy a Japanese treat. I had the matcha shaved ice and it was good, especially the way they prepare it, with an orange custard and a thin layer of burnt sugar (creme brûlée style).
Had the chrysanthemum ice cream sandwich and it was great! The hot chocolate was not as thick as I like it to be but the marshmallows were good.
I highly enjoyed the hojicha flavored kakigori. I havent seen any other shaved ice place in the city with this flavor, let alone many that make hojicha flavored desserts in general. I will definitely be back for that alone!
Really delicious, very fresh and natural tasting. Stunningly beautiful presentation too.
I really liked the chrysanthemum ice cream sandwiches. Can definitely taste the strong floral flavor in those.
Cozy setting that serves fluffy flaky shaved ice that has just that right amount of sweetness
Tasty food, friendly staff.Very hard to find, but worth to go.
The tea flavours for the shaved ice were really refreshing - bright and almost citrusy. The only thing is the ice is not as soft as others I’ve tried in nyc, it’s chunkier and not as smooth. The pancakes were okay, I wouldn’t order that again. I would come back and try the other desserts.
We loved the matcha kakigori and white sesame ice cream sandwich here! Such a cute space and refreshing sweet treats.
Very unique dessert place in Chinatown area. Try their dorayaki.
Oh yum. I hope this place sticks around. I never eat sweets, but after seeing this place featured in Bon Appetit I have it a try. My husband and I were thrilled to find a vegan option - pumpkinAlthough we tried my friends matcha flavored ice and it was divine!!Staff were friendly too.
Shaving ice is a bit pricey compare to other shops. Less choices come to ingredients. Nice presentation.
Randomly walked by this shop, and got attracted by their homey interior. I ordered two Monaka Ice-Cream: Chrysanthemum & Corn. They came up a little small then I thought, and they each cost $5.50. The size is slightly bigger than a regular maccoon. I would say its worth a try. The flavors I ordered tasted good, and the ingridents matched well with each other. This shop also serves shaved ice. They serve in a standard Asian rice bowl (not the Japanese don bowl, but the small rice bowl). I would come back to try out their shave ice when the weather is warmer.
Such a cute Japanese cafe! The matcha kakigori was flavorful and delicious, and matcha latte a good balance of milk and matcha. I was a little disappointed by the dorayaki as the dough parts were a little too thick. I did love the taro filling though so it was still okay.Update: I came back and got the matcha oat this time. Still loved the kakigori! Matcha flavor was good throughout and I loved the little matcha gummy things. The oat crisps were also a great addition.
Cute little dessert shop on the outskirts of Chinatown bordering the LES. Its a very long and narrow space but still has some seating to bring a friend or two, definitely dont bring a large group. Their desserts look simple but use very unique ingredients to add some pizazz to some of the traditional Japanese staples like the dorayaki and kakigori. Although I wasnt particularly a fan of the coconut kakigori despite the presentation looking beautiful, I was really there for their monaka ice cream sandwiches anyway. I really enjoyed the corn ice cream sandwich. It was subtle in its sweetness and had the perfect balance with the toasted coconut and lime zest. The sandwich part is made of rice flour so it had a bit of a slightly chewy and crunchy texture at the same time but I think it still went well with the ice cream. Cant wait to try out their other flavors when it gets warmer.
As a previous reviewer mentioned - the flavors are rather subtle, and while I appreciate desserts with a light touch, it was almost a bit too subtle. I wish the hojicha was more prominent in the hojicha kakigori - maybe I shouldnt have paired the ice with a hot cup of hojicha, which was fragrant and roast-y as expected. The matcha dorayaki was delicious, though Id love to try it with just the matcha creme (the bananas can be a bit overpowering).
Limited menu, but all the desserts and beverages were subtle and delicious
Wonderful and inventive new dessert spot on the LES.
The shaved ice is very plain compared to any other Ive had whether Chinese, Korean, or Japanese. Expensive for what it is.
Light, fluffy, delicious ice paradise.
Really tasty and well made kakigori!
Great small joint for shaved ice and ice cream
Cute little place and delicious desserts
The matcha kakigori is spectacular
Very yummy but too expensive
Very good!!
Love it
Amazing kakigōri
