COLLEGE STUDENTS BEWARE. I know you are away from home and might not know a lot about cars, but this is NOT the shop for you. I took my 2009 Honda Pilot in to Rising Sun Japanese Auto today because I was hearing a ticking noise. I told them I had an oil change last week but the service light was still on AND I was hearing this noise, so I decided to come for a diagnostic. I also asked for an estimate on my side mirror.A few hours later I get a picture of where the threads from drain plug are worn and they say I need oil pan. I think this is suspicious because that didnt seem to be a part of the diagnostic test and my drain plug was just replaced by my mechanic at home in September w/o the mention of needing an oil pan replacement.Turns out, this problem occurred when they were changing my oil....but I didnt ask to have my oil changed. I have a sticker from an oil change last Friday. Well, they say, we cant put it back together like this and an oil pan replacement is $822. I am a military veteran, I dont do anything without a few estimates.Do you know that even if I needed this repair they were more expensive than the dealership and two other shops?You want Honda customers bc we like things done right the first time and will pay for quality. I think it is DISGUSTING to prey upon those who know less about cars than you.

Customer service is second to none. They went far beyond our expections for service. WOW can’t believe its taken me this long to write a much needed review about my go to mechanic shop. Brandon has been saving my life for YEARS now and has been nothing but the best. Being a lady makes it hard to find trustworthy mechanics and I went through the ringer before ending up in his hands. The shop has done repairs on 3 of my vehicles through the years and I’ve sent many people here without one single worry. I’ve personally witnessed the staff calling multiple places and trying to find affordable and quality parts for customers. All the meanwhile having superb friendliness and showing the utmost kindness to those having a bad car day. Forever my dudes!

I have been coming to Rising Sun Auto since mid-2015 with my 1995 Isuzu Super Trooper for small and major repairs/replacement parts along the way from 184,000 miles to almost 300,000 miles now. Brandon was always a straight shooting guy running this realMom & Pop shop, and the guys in the shop have always delivered on quality work I can trust.I have never let another shop touch my classic Japanese 4x4! Even when we had some issues getting my axle seals squared away and I had to bring the vehicle back to warranty the work I remained a good customer and I always will. These guys deserve a Go Local medal in my book and I am content knowing all of the work and money I spent on my vehicle counted. 5 Stars!!!

The absolute best car repair shop EVER! We are new to Austin and our Lexus broke down. AAA recommended Rising Sun so we had our LS460 towed in. The guys were so nice and they explained everything to us. They even had it ready early! Big shout out to John for his service and professionalism!!

I imported a diesel 1991 80s series Landcruiser last year. I had Rising Sun help me find and install a 3 inch lift, new alternator and upgraded brakes. They have been invaluable in helping me restore and upgrade this old truck. They give me honest advise on the ins and outs of different types of upgrades. Then I make them a list of things to check, fix and install. Then they get it done.

Nice guys. But read your estimate closely. They charged me $68.00 in labor to change air filters. It literally takes any mechanic about ten minutes max to do this. Reminiscent of Jiffy lube tactics. Brandon said they charge half our labor on changing air filters across the board, regardless of how long it actually takes. Interesting way of doing business

I brought in my old 4Runner here, which had a lot of issue and kept me stuck in Austin till it was fixed. I was on a bit of a time crunch but they did a ton of work in a short time with astounding quality and my car has never run better. John kept me in the loop the whole time and really made me feel like a priority in my sticky situation. I was so impressed with their knowledge, diagnostic capabilities, and customer service--Easily one of the best shops Ive taken my car to. 10/10 would go there again if I lived in Austin.

High labor charges and long wait times for replacements on your brakes. When I picked up my vehicle I found a dozen ants had moved inside my car walls.

Dealing with John and the rest of the Rising Sun Crew is a breath of fresh air. Ive used this shop for a few years on my 98 Lexus. Its easy for a shop to take advantage of you and your old car. These guys shoot you straight and are reliable when its time to fix something. Ive never had this much communication with a shop before, Ive also never had a shop text me before - takes missed calls and returning voicemails out of the picture. Recently had my timing belt replaced by these guys and my car is running like a top.

I took my Subaru in for axels 3 times now over the last 2 weeks. This shop has somehow managed to work on my car all 3 times yet the problem still persists. The car is making a loud noise when making tight turns and it sounds horrible. I reached out to John to say hey the problem still exists for a 4th time and I have got no reply’s this time around.

I’ve used the South Lamar location for over a year: #1. They text, which I love! Super efficient and it’s even saved me a couple of trips (or Ubers) to the shop & #2. Treat you like family, very fair pricing and won’t take advantage of you if you’re clueless about cars (me!)I drive a 2001 Subaru Forester with 110K miles. It’s accident-free with one previous owner, my mom. I am overtly naive in the car department but have been able to count on Rising Sun for appropriate assessments and recommendations based on our conversations about realistic car goals - For my Forester to be safe and last as long as it cost-effectively can.100% RECOMMEND! Rising Sun is a total “swipe right” :)

I was recommended to this shop by a close friend last year who has mechanical knowledge. John has taken time to connect with me personally every time I have gone in. When I had my car serviced and inspected before going on a road trip, they took pictures and texted them all to me and brought me through each part and explained what was needed. I recently went to get a maintenance service and they provided the service for free. Very grateful as I have been unemployed since pandemic times started. The shop has good vibes, and I think these folks know what they’re doing.

The experience in working with Rising Sun was a very positive one. I got my brake pads changed and my roters resurfaced, and all done by end of day. They were not pushy, nor did they try to sell me on work I did not need done. John was easy to work with and laid back. They were very straightforward and made me feel comfortable as a customer, especially being a woman. They did not treat me like I did not know what I was talking about, and did not try to take advantage of the fact that I wasn’t a mechanic myself. I am pleased to say I was contacted by Rising Sun 3/2/20. They are doing their best to make things right, which I appreciate a great deal.So disappointed! AAA listed this shop on their website. My initial interactions were positive. I brought my vehicle in for an inspection, 2/20, to learn what repairs are needed before giving the car to my nephew. The vehicle was dropped off when they opened up. After having the car for several hours, I was told the details of the inspection; but did not get anything in writing. I provided my email address, as requested, so someone could send the results and cost for repairs. Unfortunately, Friday comes and goes without an email. I called Monday morning and was told they are working on getting quotes, the email is on the way. Monday ends without the email. It is now 2/28, I have not gotten the email or a follow up call. Thank goodness, I was able to talk with a reputable mechanic and an inspection will be done tomorrow. Rising Sun missed out on approximately, $200-$400 in repair cost. Their loss is this other businesses gain. AAA will be told of my experience.

Rising Sun is #1 for customer service and doing the right thing! I had a metal pan that sits under my car, behind the front bumper that came down and was dragging on the ground. I walked in, super stressed, unsure if I damaged the car and it was going to be expensive or just a quick fix. John the manager was so warm upon greeting, took a quick look and said oh no biggie, just have a seat! A quick 10 minutes later, it was fixed! The shop is so nice with a clean bathroom and coffee/bottled water available. But more importantly, I felt respected, safe and taken care of at Rising Sun and will 100% be back if anything is wrong with my vehicle. I asked how much it was and he said “it’s nothing, no big deal, be careful!” I was blown away with their customer service, which is so hard to come by in the automobile care industry. I took a 4runner in to have minor electrical issues looked at and charged $124.00 to provide the same information ORileys provided (This price was stated when I called but I assumed more info would be provided).They then provided me an estimate that I did not agree with.After leaving a review, I was contacted by Brandon. He reached out to better understand the issue I had with my visit and discussed their service - he refunded the charge as some information was left off the report I was given. This was a very kind and professional way of handling business and I am glad he did. Next time I have an Issue with a Toyota, ill be going back to these guys.

I was a little hesitant about taking my European car to a place more focused on Japanese cars, but turns out they they have experience with most makes American, Japanese or European. After my first experience where they fixed the sunroof and did an oil change on my Audi with speed, friendliness and professionalism, I knew I had found my new local shop for all my cars service needs. Go see Jason, Jim or really any of the guys there as they are super nice and will treat you/your car right.

This shop also did a great job working on my Prius that needed a new wheel bearing. Its the small courtesies like this along with the fairest prices in town and the friendly and informative staff that has me recommending this place over and over. Look, no one likes taking their car to the shop, its basically like going to the dentist with motor oil stains, BUT if youre in Austin, TX, this is hands down the best place to go. I bought a 2004 Isuzu Rodeo for my son who lives in Minnesota, I live in East Texas. Decided to give it a shakedown run to Austin for business meetings and sure enough lights started flashing on the dash as I hit Austin City Limits. Turns out the Rodeo is sort of the united nations of car parts as well as an orphan.Jason and his technicians at Rising Sun South not only were able to fix it but knowing I was from out of town made sure to have it done by Friday so I could get home for the weekend.Knowledgeable, friendly, sort of like the home town mechanic when I grew up. I came in at first thinking I had a loud engine, and they figured out it was my wheel bearing & took care of it - saving me much money had I gone to the Acura dealership.I trust these guys and understand that they can do such a wide array of services in a fraction of the time it would take at other shops/dealerships. Its right across from Alamo Drafthouse and a bunch of shops if you have time during the service. They are also accommodating with leaving your car overnight with a drop key box.Highly, highly recommend.

I have been coming for many years to this business and find that they are efficient and effective and know what they are doing. They do know a great deal about Japanese automobiles and have a great deal of experience with all kinds of issues and can do all kinds of repairs.They always give an accurate estimate and the estimate is what you pay, unless major issues have appeared. I am a student of mechanical engineering, and am pretty handy with my truck, but there was a mystery noise I am not familiar with. Small issue, and also a silly mistake on my part. I love Rising Sun. I first discovered Rising Sun in 1997. I met Allan Walker, the owner at the time, and he immediately made me feel like I was speaking with a knowledgeable professional. Today, I still take my vehicles to Rising Sun. I enjoy doing business with the new owner, Brandon, as well as talking with him about cars. I feel that Rising Sun presents me with the problems (or not if no problem exists) and then prioritizes the things that need urgent attention. This allows me to postpone the appropriate things for later. This strategy is helpful for me since I generally drive vehicles with over 150K miles but I think that this type of repair strategy is applicable to any vehicle regardless of its age. I have an 05 Honda Accord with 150000 miles on it. We were ready to junk it. Brought it here to see what they could do. Brandon was so helpful and fixed the car in 2 days for a good price. No joke, the car runs like its brand new.

Rising Sun is the only place I’ll go in Austin! I got an oil change, it was done in under an hour. Brandon also told me about an issue with my car that I could get fixed for free (under warranty) and printed off the paperwork for me. Their customer service is amazing and I would recommend them to anyone in town.

Ive had an electrical gremlin living in my jeep since the day I bought it new in 2008. It appeared at random and every time I took it to a jeep dealership for this issue (at least 6 times and 3 different dealerships that I can remember) they had told me that since they couldnt recreate it, I was just plain out of luck. I had heard from a friend that Rising Sun Automotives S Lamar location recently had new ownership and that I should give Brandon over there a call. After talking with him I left the Jeep and honestly, because of my earlier experiences with multiple dealerships regarding this issue, I didnt have much hope. Im happy to say that I was wrong. Brandon was determined to figure it out. While is was difficult to recreate the issue he said that he didnt want that vehicle to leave the shop until he figured it out and I was happy. It took some time and a lot of effort and research on his part but he narrowed it down to price of faulty computer hardware. I am so relieved to have it finally figured out and fixed that Im no longer questioning whether it will decide to start or not when I get in the drivers seat. No more being stuck in the grocery store parking lot cycling the ignition over and over and praying that eventually it will turn over and get me home. Huge thanks to Rising Sun Automotive and an even bigger thanks to Brandon over there for him accepting the challenge that even the Jeep dealerships wouldnt. You guys are rock!!!

I have used Rising Sun South as my go to auto service center for years, and have always been very pleased with the quality of work Ive received there. Having said that, since Brandon took ownership and management over the past year or so, things have been raised to a new level. He is thorough, transparent about issues (what needs to be fixed versus what can wait), and highly ethical in his business practices. He understands that long-term profitability and success rely on strong trust relationships instead of making a quick buck on a given transaction.As an example, Brandon uncovered an issue with my vehicle that was the result of a much earlier visit (prior to his ownership). He could have easily ignored it, but instead brought it to my attention and proceeded to correct the issue at no charge to me.I highly recommend Rising Sun South, and would happily refer their services to anyone!!

TL;DR : I will not return. Poor service caused me to have to return twice with no solution. UPDATE: Manager did call and make it right afterwards with exemplary customer service.I took my Honda Odyssey in for a timing belt replacement and a check up, and was pretty nervous because we had just moved to Austin (I dislike taking a car to a new mechanic). Brandon was confident and conversational. After the check up, was told I needed rear brake replacements, the battery terminals needed cleaning, and a few other things needed doing. I paid $2000+ for the services. Within a day the battery terminals disconnected and would not reconnect as they were never checked, leaving my wife stranded with our kids. I took the car back in; Rising Sun replaced the terminals free of charge and apologized. A few days later the brakes start making an odd rotational creaking. I took the car back, and they searched for the problem. According to them it took 3 drives just to hear the sound and they decided they had missed a spot when machining the rear brakes and needed to re-machine them. They also identified some other problems that amounted to $900 worth of services. I did not pay for those, simply asked for the re-machining and an oil change, and left. The sound came back 2 days later. Took the car to a new mechanic I was referred to by a friend and he simply took the brakes off, applied grease behind the shoes where Rising Sun had not (which is standard practice and necessary) and the car stopped making the noises. UDPATE: Manager called me and apologized for the mistakes, Brandon made it right with a level of customer service I had not experienced in a while.

As a first time customer, I was was extremely satisfied with the level of customer service and the work done on my car. I would definitely recommend Rising Sun Auto!

I hate to do this, because I have given this shop so many chances.. BUT three times in the past few months I have experienced the worst with this shop. First after I ran my car out of gas and I changed my own distributor I took it to this shop and they told me I needed another distributor, so they took the brand new one off and put on one of theirs, when I got the new one back it was not even the right one and I did not get the refund from the company I ordered the distributor from. Then when I went to grab the car it did not start in the middle of the night! The next day I call and told them what happened. They check the car and decide that it is my spark plugs, which I also changed and where fine I am sure and my battery, which did need to be changed, but they charged $200.00 for this. I finally got the car and came during business hours and when I started it I could tell that the timing was off, when I informed them they said oh it is fine it is running good. About a week later I took it back and told them the timing was off once again and it had no power because of this. They fixed this free of charge, I then had them change my oil at the same time.and about a couple weeks later after only driving it two times I hear a sound as if my oil in my engine is birbling, yes I said birbling. Anyways I called to let them know all of my oil had leaked out of my car, and that I parked it and was not driving it, they persisted to tell me that I needed to put oil in it and drive it to them! I towed it to another shop in my town and they discovered my filter had not even been put on tight enough and the engine began knocking after just turning it over. Needless to say I am not impressed and will not go back after this issue is resolved!

I drive a Honda Element and husband drives a Toyota Tundra and Rising Sun always treats us right. They fix the vehicle, theyre very fair about their charges and very helpful.

I called rising sun auto to check out my Toyota 4 runner this morning at 10 am since the engine light was on. I also told the staff that I needed Car back quickly since I was selling it today . Not only did I get the car back in 4 hours fixed but they did my secvice at a fair price . I will now be using there service for all my automotive mechanic needs .

Seemed too busy to diagnose and deal with my problem. Told me that there was a manufacturers recall for northern states that deal with alot of ice on the roads, so obviously not relevant to Austin. Charged diagnostic fee for this unhelpful information. Also hard to get in and out due to vicinity to Lamar. Will not be returning.

I was disappointed after all the good reviews when my daughter took her CRV for an estimate which she thought was a starter issue. I’m ok with a fee for diagnosing a problem, however she was told it was $60, but they added $15 for shop supplies???? Then the cost estimate was a lot higher than most. I know we can get a starter replaced for less than $700, and that would be using dealer parts.

I have always received prompt, professional, and courteous service from Rising Sun. I trust the repair work completely and will continue using this shop for my ongoing car maintenance.

Honest folks !

So glad I made the switch from the dealer. Rising Sun has a much more convenient location, turned around the repair in a day, actually picked up the phone when I called, drove me to m office immediately, and I even saved a few bucks.
