I needed to get a vehicle inspection for Texas car registration and per usual, I left things to the last minute. They were able to do it same day. They were super friendly and I really appreciated that they wore masks and required customers to wear masks. I didnt feel patronized or laughed at, and I always feel a bit nervous about that as a woman at a car shop. Id definitely go back for future services! Also super cool that theyve been in business since the 1930s - they have an old cash register in the office and a gas prices sign from way back when.

Extremely unprofessional and very defensive when simply asking about the bill (quite shocking). A respectfully asked question about why the cost for X is a certain amount does not warrant poor behavior and a defensive attitude from the employee &or owner. It was unprofessional/rude definitely would not go back.

NOTE: I did not use this business.I needed to get a vehicle inspected and was happy to see they were open but did not see anyone outside doing inspections or working on cars so I thought it was a good time. As I approached the office, I could clearly see two young men inside not wearing masks through their giant glass windows, which I was also happy to see - some normalcy. I opened the door to ask if they did inspections and the first thing they did was tell me I needed to wear a mask, as they slowly began to put their masks on. I took a step outside to ask if they did inspections and they rudely told me I needed to wear a mask and that it would be a three hour wait for an inspection. I found the whole thing rather hilarious.

Cant say enough about these guys. They took the time to accurately diagnose an issue with our vehicle and offered a reasonable price to do the work (same day) others had over priced and mis-diagnosed. Highly recommend!

Been going here for almost 10 years. Múltiple times they have done some minor additional thing for me without charging me, or told me to fix it myself for almost no money if it was easy. The level of honesty and generous customer focus I think is the number one awesome thing about these guys.Their prices are extremely fair as well. Usually the car is ready to pick up ahead of schedule.Best repair shop in the whole state.

My trusted shop closed down at the beginning of the pandemic, and I needed a brake job done, so I went to Gene Johnson just down the road. My brakes had been squeaking and I asked them to check both front and rear. They ended up doing a brake job on the front. Immediately, I began to notice intermittent grinding noises when braking (that were not occurring prior to my visit). I returned to the shop and they told me theyd never checked the rear because I didnt ask them to (I did). So, they did a bit of work on the rear, and told me I could try it out and return to pay them if the problem was fixed. It wasnt. The intermittent braking noise continued and got much worse. I eventually had to go to another shop and they had to completely redo all the work, and discovered problems (metal to metal rear brake shoe, for one) that were missed. They mentioned that the brake pads were a brand theyd never seen before. Their work immediately fixed all the issues I had been having. So unfortunately, I had to pay for brake work to be done twice.

My car broke down on I-35 and I had it towed to Gene Johnsons. They called me to tell me what the problem might be and what they would have to do to find out. At which point I mentioned some work I got done recently in Houston. Gene Johnsons informed me there was a good chance the problems were related and advised me to contact the other mechanic to see if they would cover their work.I did and found out about a warranty network that had shops in Austin as well. Having the car towed to another shop tomorrow for the warranty coverage. Gene Johnsons did not charge me a penny. I am 22 and dont know a ton about cars so I really appreciate the honesty and helpfulness I was shown when they had nothing to gain from it.

Thus mechanical shop is very honest. Once I went to them for an AC, that I was quoted over 1k on. Turned out to be about $60 with Gene. Another time I took my daughters car in for a fuel leak, there wasnt one.I do suggest to call and make appointment. They are so good you have to plan when to drop your car off.

The fact that this repair shop hasnt been gobbled up by Austins insatiable growth is the first indication that they are doing something right. A step back in time where you immediately know that the guy youre talking to behind the counter has hands on experience and the common goal is to get you back on the road as soon as possible. Everyone in the shop shows some hustle, they are extremely polite, never pushy.Starting with just inspections I eventually moved our companys fleet repairs to them exclusively not only because of the quality of their work but also because as a female operations manager they dont dumb down or try to mansplain things to me when I have questions, as I have experienced in many repair shops and dealerships. I have never witnessed them doing it to other customers either - men or women. I feel like we work together to come up with the most economical and efficient solution for the issue at hand.Their prices are extremely competitive but what keeps me coming back is the quick turn times and the fact I havent had recurring issues with their repairs. They dont push up-sells or unnecessary repairs but have brought to my attention details like the registration is coming due, would I like to go ahead and take care of the inspection while they have the car? Its that attention to detail is a huge savings to our company because it minimizes vehicle downtime. We are hard on our fleet and they keep us running which is invaluable to our operation.

Recommended to me by another great shop (Precision Auto & Body), Gene Johnson Auto Service is great. I brought my BMW in with some brake issues, and I thought it was going to be some big expense with a lot of work, based on what another shop had told me. Instead, Gene Johnson suggested we try a super-cheap option ($40) to see if it fixed the brake issues, and it did! Instead of spending upwards of $600, i spent about $40. These guys are honest and trust-worthy. The problem I had was going to be really difficult to diagnose, and some shops could have taken advantage of that and just done a more expensive set of work. They also didnt take very long to do the work, I believe it was a bring in the morning, pick up later in day thing. I did have to schedule a few days in advance, but thats because they are busy, and they are busy because they are good. Anyway, I wont hesitate to bring my car here again, and I fully recommend this shop.

This is where I take my truck when its had issues. I used to have another mechanic and he was fantastic but his prices kept going up and up and up. Before I made the change I had researched other places and these guys kept popping up.Sure enough I had an issue with my truck and I decided to take it in. I had some issues with the A/C. I dropped by in the morning and they took a look at it and by the afternoon I was on the road again with a working A/C. Since then they have been fast, reliable and very reasonable when it comes to the pocketbook. Give these guys a chance and see if they become your new mechanic.

This shop is excellent. I have brought two of my cars here over the years. Several times they were willing to tighten something or diagnose a minor problem on the spot for little to no cost. The more involved projects have always been reasonably priced and they were clear about what was going to be done and the timeline. If there was a negative, it would be that there are times when theyre too busy and cant schedule something for the next day.

The sign of a great mechanic is when they tell you theres nothing wrong with your car. This is the only shop Ive ever visited that discouraged me from paying for unnecessary maintenance. I can say, without a doubt, Ill be returning when my car does need something, even for just an oil change.

I went to Goodyear initially to get an oil change and it turned out that my serpentine belt was worn out and disintegrated and they gave me an estimate that it would cost $417 and that just seemed too much. My boss recommended Gene Johnson automotive and I read the reviews and decided to try them out. I took my car from Goodyear and immediately took it to Gene Johnson. They were very straightforward, nice and I felt like I could trust them so I left my car with them. Two hours later they called said my car was finished and will cost $89. So to put it simply, these guys were efficient, effective and ideally priced. They are now my mechanics for future car issues, including oil changes. Dont let big names like Goodyear fool you and come here!
