We are in love with Nu-Beginning. John, Stella and Ginger are wonderful. Fresh, local and unique products and incredible meals to go. After using several meal plans that ship meals weekly, we tired of the lack of variety in their vegetarian offerings, not to mention all of the packaging requiring disposal. Our area does not offer many imaginative vegetarian dishes. We talked with John and asked if he could provide weekly vegetarian meals for us and he immediately agreed. Since then, he has cooked unique and varied dishes we pick up weekly. Our taste buds have been exceedingly pleased and happy. The varied soups are some of the best we have ever tasted. Check out the creative and delicious magic that is Johns cooking and be welcomed by great smiles. Do yourself a favor. Make good friends with the people, products and offerings from the Nu-Beginning Store.
Great quality and sweet staff! I stop in every time Im in town.
What a great store with a good selection of local products. Food was good and service was quick. We will be back!
To be fair, this was our third visit in three years and the first two times were both delightful and delicious. Today, however, we had an overpriced and unappealing meal. $11.50 each for a dry and mediocre black bean burger served with a pile of generic potato chips. The vegetable soup looked and tasted like public school cafeteria food and the tomato basil soup looked great but seemed to have not been taste tested by the cook. At $3.50 apiece, the “iced tea” was barely not water. Our previous visits were in the much smaller space before the relocation. Perhaps they should have stayed there and put the money into maintaining quality instead of asking for customers to round up their bill to help pay down the debt. I’m happy to pay good money for good food, but today we spent over $40 on a terrible meal.
A wonderful restaurant that has a great variety of food for every diet. They have menu items for vegetarian, gluten free, and apparently anything else imaginable.Personally, for lunch I like the chicken salad and the egg salad sandwiches. The Cuban sandwich is also delicious. They serve breakfast all day, every day and I hear it is all delicious, but Im stuck on the Belgium waffles which are served only on Saturdays. They have several lunch/dinner specials every day that are constantly changing. Some dishes are from around the world. They look good but I havent tried them yet.The building itself is a bit hard to see from the road when driving. The signs are small and its easy to think it is something other than a restaurant, but it is worth the effort. The food is good and the people are friendly.
A wonderful restaurant and store that offers specialized foods such as gluten free and vegan options. As well as regular foods to choose from. The food is always consistently good and the wait staff is very friendly and helpful. The store offers farm fresh milk, eggs, and cheese. They also sell delicious jams that are homemade and local honey. If you havent tried this gem of a restaurant and store you really should.
Fabulous, especially in their new location (221 N. Lewis). Great open, light, inviting atmosphere. Lots of seating options. All that we ordered was excellent; even the wheat toast was so good I just wanted to eat every bit. The jam is homemade by the owner and good to the last speck. Will be back here every chance we get!
We found great local items at great prices.
This restaurant used to be my favorite lunch place at its previous location, so much so that my friends and I would get cravings to go there. The food was always fresh, tasty, interesting and plentiful, and the ambiance was cozy. But for various reasons, I hadnt had the chance to visit since they moved 2-ish years ago. True, in part Id been discouraged by initial reviews, but I was curious to form my own opinion. So, thinking that by now the restaurant would be back in its groove, last week I encouraged two companions to join me for lunch there.Based on our experience, I dont think Ill return soon. We were the only customers in the place that no longer feels cozy but more like an auto parts store with widely spaced tables. Service was initially solicitous, but degraded over the course of our hour there as three or maybe four people, some evidently quite uncertain, attended to us. It was hard to talk over what was billed as live music but seemed rather to be a jam session of regulars who showed up for the purpose. We found the musical selections strident foreground music rather than soothing background music. When the food finally came, the three meals were delivered item by item rather than seat by seat although we were the only customers there most of that time and our order was not complicated. The food Id much touted was a big disappointment to all. The burger was overcooked, the chunky vegetable soup was actually just potatoes in brown broth and disagreeably bitter, the salad was skimpy being mostly lettuce, the bread was flat-tasting and cold (and we had to ask twice for it although it was included in one order and requested with another), and the pot of coffee was like tepid dishwater. (In fairness, a cup of a different roast ordered after the meal was quite good -- hot and deeply flavorful.) Only the off-menu scoop of tuna salad and the reliable house citrus vinaigrette were excellent.Im really sorry this was such a downbeat experience for us. When the restaurant was at its former location, not only did I get cravings to go there, but I used to tell everyone I could about it and encourage them to visit, promising they would not be disappointed, and they never were. Sad to say, I dont feel comfortable doing that now.The management are really lovely and I want them to succeed despite the negative content of this review. Hopefully, theyll know what accounted for the experience my group had and be able to address it.Maybe if wed gone just for coffee and pastries midafternoon and the place had been full, we would have had a different experience, for the demands on the kitchen would have been fewer, the coffee would have had to be kept fresh and flowing, and the live music would have provided just the right vibe.
This is such a wonderful place! The owner is very kind and the staff are all very pleasant. So many places these days care more about looking hip and doing whatever aesthetics are in fashion at the moment that they forget about quality. Not here. Everything I have eaten here was delicious! And they have a range of options from vegan, vegetarian, to meat loving cheese loving goodness. The outdoor area in the back is so so nice! Most places only have outdoor seating right next to the street in front of their buildings, so I really appreciate that there is a garden away from the road in the back of the building. Lots of pollinator friendly bushes and plenty of seating.I like to get duck eggs from the grocery area when they are in stock. All of the food specials I have had from their menu have been very good. They have wifi and its a great spot to set up and work on homework.Another cool thing they do are special holiday buffet style menu events for holidays like Easter and St Patricks day. This humble wonder is a real gem of Staunton. May it live long and prosper.=)
Super cute, rural, hole-in-the-wall type diner with a locally sourced food store inside as well. Very friendly staff and great breakfast! I go here every time I visit Staunton.
Very welcoming, polite, and amazing employees. Beyond amazing food and prices. Very clean store and restaurant. Altogether outstanding service and environment.
My guy and I had breakfast. The place was clean tho a little warm inside. The food was outstanding and the staff was very friendly, courteous and efficient. Definitely will return and freely recommend!!
Black bean burger was out of this world! Had fun looking around the shop & picking out a few things to take back to Ohio with us. We will be back for breakfast before we leave town!
The people were so friendly and the food was so good!!! Expect your plate to be proper portions (not overflowing), but delicious
Had excellent breakfast here on New Years day! Coffee was organic with lots of flavor. Ordered a Build Your Own Breakfast of eggs, bacon, toast and fruit. Fruit was fresh and whole wheat toast tasted awesome! Jam was HOMEMADE!
Relaxing atmosphere and fresh delicious food! We had breakfast and my husband said the scrambled eggs were the best and freshest he’d had in 25 years. Will visit again when we get back to Staunton.
Delicious! The eggs cumberbatch really hit the spot and the grocery section really wowed me with quality and prices.
Love this place! Wonderful people who care and excellent food! I highly recommend stopping by for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Theres something good cookin all the time. They also sell farm fresh goodies too. You gotta go there.
Once a good business that quickly fell apart.started shopping here maybe around 2013 or 2014 or so because of how I wanted to try the local meat and eggs and occasionally fruit.supposedly local grown and sold.the prices werent too bad and the products were originally good quality and made with the freshest ingredients.there was more variety of products available at one time too.that did not last long at all before many of his employees and suppliers suddenly changed and he and his wife could not manage the business as they scrambled to find new workers and suppliers.once this happened the products became extremely poor in quality and even safety was an issue as it became easy to find a whole dozen rotten eggs at once and the fruit was frequently bruised or rotten by the time it arrived at the store and the quality of the meat products dwindled significantly.the last I heard they also wanted to expand on the business.I dont see how that will ever work out since they cannot manage the one that has floundered so terribly.the owner may not have wanted this to happen, but he lost the confidence of many customers and his new cooks and employees are not at all the same.the fact that so many of his workers quit before makes me obviously question what is it like to be employed by him?.in no way am I threatening the business and in fact Im very sad for them because its a terrible thing for ones plans and executions of ideas to not work out in the end.there is a certain chemistry to owning and running a food store and restaurant just like the food it sells.everyone (owner included) is an ingredient and they can make or break that recipe for success.also much of their sold food is not local anymore, but bought wholesale and the ready made meals are often made with cheap non organic GMOD ingredients.they also are not gluten free and do not offer such options.as another reviewer mentioned if you want these choices go to Cranberrys instead.
Had their breakfast. Would definitely recommend. Food was great and prompt friendly service. If we’re ever back through here we will go again.
Awesome food, really interesting and delicious specials. Good selection of beers, great atmosphere as well. Love it!
The do a great job with service and food. I have never had a bad experience and go every week!
Havent tried the food yet but Ive heard good things! The little shop at the front is great and has unique things that are hard to find locally.
Wonderful selection of natural products. Their food and service is terrific.
Was interested in the groceries, but the selections were few and at a premium price. The people were nice.
Simple and delicious food with great gluten free and vegetarian options. There is outdoor seating, which is a real plus! And the proprietors are very friendly.
The food was awful and the service no better. Was very disappointed.
Great, Local Food. Someone at our table said Best Scrambled Eggs Ive had in my Life.
Small, informal place with excellent farm to table food. Meatloaf is super... And great seasonal soups. And we always pick up some cookies too.
Healthy food & great music + nice atmosphere to talk.
Friendly, great chicken salad! An authentic farm to table, casual restaurant.
Precious and simply surprisingly superb dining. Local produce and daily specials. Local musicians many days.
Tea was alwful, food not much better. Toooooo expensive for what u get. Meatloaf VERY dry not many dressing to choose from for salad. Salad is poorly put together. Live music they had on our visit sounded like a dieing cow in a half storm. If I could give this place no stars I would. Very unpleasant experance. On a plus waitress was very polite and helpful.
Great neighborhood cafe. Farm to table. Welcoming staff.
Good food good service with periodic live music. A good place to take your family.
Great place, very good selection of local produce & products
Liberal owner told me he would ask me to leave if I made conservative statements in my bid for the Staunton City School Board. I never ate the food but the service was terrible and I believe it was because of my political views. I do not advocate boycotting of local businesses! I am using this critique to state that due to the actions of the owner, I will not frequent this place.
Great food and nice people.
Great food and accommodates gluten freeFriendly and knowledgeable staffOwner is personable and the kindest man I have met! I frequent this place whenever I am in the area.
Everything was tasty. It was wonderful to find a place that serves fresh greens with eggs as a breakfast option.
Delicious food, friendly and professional staff, and a great menu!!! They also have a small stage with great music.....a must if you visit or live in Staunton!!!
Love the live music and singing. Great food!
Live guitarist at lunch added to the experience. Wonderful spicy Etiopian bean soup. Friendly staff. Comfortable open room.
Wonderful restaurant and market. Bad location leads to no crowds ever. It wont last long so get in before it goes out of business.
Great food, good conversations, old atmosphere, like to visit again.
What a beautiful quaint place. Food & service was as expected.
Good breakfast - eggs, bacon, tomato, and even gf toast! wait staff was super attentive and sweet
Friendly staff, great coffee, yummy breakfast, reasonable prices
Good food, not busy. Very friendly staff.
Somewhat expensive, but food was good when I was hungry and needed something in a pinch!
Good food. Fun live music on Monday during lunchAtmosphere is a bit underwhelming.
Great food, excellent service. Highly recommend this restaurant.
Cute little place, good smoothies and pancakes, little shop that sells local farm products, love it.
Unique Cafe with local products for sale. Good food, friendly staff, rarely crowded.
Love their food and employees are nice. Yummy baked apples.
Customer service is terrible. Employees are less than valued. Expired food is sold past its date. Nu-beginning is the trashy burger king of the organic food market. Would not recommend. Take a visit to cranberries instead.
Great atmosphere and service, food was excellent.
Great family-owned business with generous portions and good service.
Very friendly, excellent service and food, just became my top 5 places in Staunton
We buy all of our milk eggs cream and butter here. Highest quality.
Great staff, quick service, wonderful potato salad!
They are opening a 4000 square foot new restaurant and it will have a 4000 square foot sustainable garden at the rear
Nu-Beginning Farm Store/Cafe is a Foodie destination worth the trip! This is a small casual cafe/grocery. The menu ingredients and the groceries are, as much as possible, locally sourced from the Shenandoah Valley region. This is not your typical cafe. They serve soups, salads, sandwiches, breakfast, local beer, local wine, and entrees similar to other establishments. However, if you have an adventurous palate, there are all kinds of unusual selections to choose from. These folks create amazing food combinations, that Ive never heard of, nor even thought of! There are plenty of options for people with more conventional tastes too. The menu hosts vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options. There is truly something for everyone. My wife and I opted for a soup and salad combo. She had a Greek salad, with potato leek soup. I had the delicious Greek salad as well, but chose the split pea curry soup. We were both exceedingly pleased with the quality of the ingredients, the service, and the recipes. Im looking forward to my next visit to try one of the more unfamiliar choices. If you are seeking something completely different, healthy and delicious, be sure to try the Nu-Beginning Farm Store/Cafe. It is a stones throw from the historic area of Staunton and worth the effort to find it.Another wonderful aspect of our experience was talking with John (one of the owners and a farmer). He gave us pragmatic advice on sustainable methods to deal with Japanese Beetles. It was incredibly interesting to talk with John the farmer, the chef, grocer, business operator, photographer, homesteading teacher, and who knows what else....Wow. If youre into sustainable agriculture, buy fresh-buy local, farm to fork, supporting small business, adventurous recipes, and all phases of food production, you will LOVE this place. Everyone was friendly, even the other customers! Gillian, our server, was exceptionally attentive and motivated. She provided excellent suggestions, and was knowledgeable about the menu, the ingredients, food, cooking, and the grocery inventory.Groceries that caught my eye were - fresh produce, local eggs, and a nifty selection of sauerkrauts. They generously offer samples for some of their products, so that you can try before you buy. They also offer locally made soaps, essential oil mixes, locally roasted coffee beans from all over the world, local honey, local jellies and much more. This is a great place to grab a delectable meal, and pick up outstanding local ingredients for your own culinary creations.Update: We recently harvested a crop of parsnips, and brought a load to The Store. John was completely transparent about his pricing and markup. I will tell you, he is ABSOLUTELY FAIR! If you patronize Nu Beginning, you are directly supporting small scale, organic, local farmers. These are people that genuinely care about the environment, the food, and you.June 9, 2016, - Looks like Nu-Beginning The Store is growing. We stopped in yesterday for an asparagus and gruyere sandwich. It was loaded up with other veggies too and DEEEEELICIOUS! We love finding new combinations like that. It is easy to fall into the rut of cooking the same things over and over.Update June 2016My wife and I have dined at The Store a few times since our original review. Here is what it comes down to. How do you feel after you consume the food that have paid for? Do you feel overweight and undernourished? Yes, it costs more than fast food, but your body will thank you. These folks are more into the consumer and the farmers than getting rich. This place is AWESOME!!!
The kids loved this place and asked to go back
Very tasty food with excellent service!
I love this place. The best food ever!
Great service and delicious food.
Ok food. Nothing terribly special. Nice.
Excellent farm to table food.
Love it, they have Jamican Me Crazy good coffee!
Decent food, very fresh tasting, and good prices. Store has overpriced produce in mediocre condition.
