The pandemic has been hard on many businesses, and Heavy Metal has dearly suffered. When they are open, they give fast, intelligent and cost-friendly service. I had a bike that two cycle shops were going to charge me $100-150 to fix a front brake issue that HM did for $50! They are very thorough and have an ability to contextualize your specific issue. They cater to high end as well, and I have brought a half dozen bikes there over the years. I hope that they are able to open again soon.

Based on the number of positive reviews, Im guessing this place is good for people who are in the elite club. In my experience,Hours are inconsistent which means you may have to wait around outside for some unknown amount of time unless you have an employees phone number.Theyre not responsive over the phone either. And theyre seemingly very particular about what services theyll do, but none of that is communicated online or by phone. So its a crapshoot - you may just be turned away at the door.Seems super convenient and friendly if youre in the club, but not very accessible or friendly to outsiders or beginners. Its not my place to judge how the business wants to operate, but I think customers should be aware of this before potentially wasting time.

Nice staff. They are very laid back and there is no bike shop ego that is too common these days. We did have to wait for a bit as they were on a lunch break when we got there. They are honest, upfront, and fair priced. I think its one of my favorite bike shops in SF. Also it looks like there is a cool bar next door so you can kill time too 😁

I REALLY LOVE these guys!!! The only place I EVER take my stuff to get worked on... I buy my bikes there too, and as a long time bike messenger in the city, they can take the punishment that comes with being in my stable...No problem too big or too small... The BEST place in SF to take your bikes...Do yourself a favor and take your bikes there for all of your mechanical needs...you won’t regret it! And, hey, buy a bike while you’re there!!!

Fast service. No joke, great group of bike experts that know what their doing. I had some issues they helped me resolve quickly. Shop is small and there can be a lot going on there at once. Be patient if youre new they will get to you.

Awesome! They are very low key but they know their stuff and always take care of my bike when I bring it in. They dont charge too much for their work so its affordable to keep my bike in good shape. They tend to have what I need in parts as well. They use to sell bikes too but they dont do that so much anymore, its mostly just repairs. Its a very small shop and a great local business.

It looks like a hole, but this place is great for a bike setup or repair. They also have a lot of vintage bike parts if thats your thing. The mechanics are very friendly, and dont overcharge for service. Compared to other shops in the City which will charge a minimum $50 per hour for labor, and may not give your bike back the same day...... Heavy Metal charged $35 for a derailleur cable & setup (parts & labor), and had it finished in 30 minutes. The mechanic also adjusted a few other parts that he found out of whack for no charge. After the service he took it for a ride a round the block to make sure it was shifting correctly. I was so happy, I tipped the mechanic $20.

I walked into HMBS with an interesting request: rent a bike that I could use for three days and for a reasonable price. Dan not only hooked me up with a light and fast fixie, he gave me a great deal as well. Also need to mention the shop has some great used equipment including a Slingshot (from my home state WI) and a (Chris) Kelly road bike! Thanks guys!
