Marcel did an exceptional job guiding us through some amazing trails in Demo Forest, Pacifica, and Downieville! Worth every dollar I spent. He provided us with some of the best bikes in the market (adjusted our suspension and rebound for us), and provided drinks and snacks.With over 25 years of experience in these trails, I felt confident he knew his way around and had the ability to explain all the features you would be expecting within the trails. The best part of being guided buy Marcel is that no time is wasted looking for trails on the map.Marcel also took the time to take awesome pictures and videos of us. He gave us tips while riding and always checked in on how we felt after riding the more difficult trails. After a quick phone call, he provided with great recommendations to make sure we picked the best option for my skills and needs.Throughout the day, he often made sure the plan was ok with me and adjust when needed. Great shopIve been here three times and Ive always been given top quality service. I had a rim trued they did a great job. I needed a seat they gave me the perfect fitting seat that is strong. Definitely going to be a return customer. By the way Amazon didnt carry the seat that they sold me. Patronize locals only. Service cant be replaced by computer.

I am a new bike owner and I took my pre-owned mountain bike in for a tire issue. Service was super quick and while I was waiting, Jeff and Marcel were kind enough to answer some other questions I had on the bike. Really appreciated their time and candidness about what service is usual for a used bike.

I dont often leave reviews, but my experience here was so pleasant this afternoon that I just wanted to let them know it meant a lot to me.I bought a new Specialized bike here this afternoon and the staff was just so friendly, accommodating, and helpful. I was technically there at closing time but they let me in and showed me around their various bikes and answered all my questions. They really know what they are talking about there. Just got back from an epic mountain bike tour at UC Santa Cruz, we rode for 4 hours and it was great fun and unforgettable. Marcel is skilled, knowledgeable and safe. I learn some new skills and some of the single track trails were over 2 miles long and technical, great company and 100% for real.

If you are into mountain or gravel, there is only one shop in SF that knows what theyre doing. Marcel and his team know equipment and are out on the trails. They live the bike life. Best in the business.

We found the High Trails Cyclery via Google and I have to say this was the best experience during our 3 months world travel!! We had a real blast discovering the local trails (and in Santa Cruz) with the owner Marcel as a guide. He rents very well maintained latest model high-end bikes (we had top-spec Specialized / Santa Cruz bikes, one even brand new out of the box), invests much time to get the bike fit you perfectly, provides snacks and drinks during the car trips and plans nice stops for dinner, we even visited the Santa Cruz showroom in Santa Cruz after shredding the trails there with him for a whole day! We will definitely come back to San Francisco for more trail fun (and save some money until then to get our hands on one of the sweet Santa Cruz bikes 🤩)! I booked a tour with Marcel for January when I was visiting from the UK. I was keen to go riding in Marin county. Marcel was helpful from the start advising on options and likely weather conditions. I am quite a beginner and after giving me some options on the day we decided on China Camp. Marcel picked me up promptly from my hotel in central SF and drove me via the Golden Gate Bridge to China Camp. He provided an excellent bike, the Santa Cruz Bronson and set up the suspension for me and provides a helmet,pads and a range of snacks. The ride itself was good fun if hard work but Marcel gave me some helpful tips and was very patient even though I’m sure he could have done it in a fraction of the time. The view from up top was great and the run back down was excellent. I’d definitely do this again and Marcel made organising the whole thing very easy, far easier than I could have done myself with no local knowledge. Highly recommended.

Absolutely top notch! I actually have not even been to the store yet, but booked a mountain bike tour with Marcel before coming in town. He was so accommodating to make sure I had a bike I would enjoy, and even picked me up at the airport to go straight to the trails. His knowledge of local trails, and obvious love of MTB was incredible, and he made sure that we rode the right trails to enjoy the best that the area has to offer within my riding limits.Bottom line, everything about my time with Marcel was fantastic! From the equipment to the trails to the company and conversation, I enjoyed every minute. Will definitely be back next time Im in the area.

Highly recommend. I had an issue with a Mavic wheelset I purchased from a different vendor. Marcel and his team, during a pandemic, took really great care of the situation even though I was clearly stressed. They even called Competitive Cyclist on my behalf to see if they could ship the missing part (which, they could not). I felt like they really cared, and will now consider them every time I need a bike repair or installation. Getting a handlebar installed today, in fact! Thank you team.

Very friendly team at High Trails and super professional. I was in SF for the thanksgiving long weekend and booked a mountain bike tour on the e-bikes. Marcel gave great advice on which day to go, which route would suit my skill level and provided all the required riding gear such as gloves, helmet and a jacket. It was my first ride on the e-bike and it was such an amazing experience. I felt really confident during the ride because Marcel gave great technical advice about how to use the electric motor and how to handle the varying terrain and hills. The only problem now is that I want to buy an e-bike, so Ill have to start saving up! Definitely make sure you pay a visit to High Trails if you are after a fun day biking.

I cannot put into words how much I enjoyed the mountain biking day trip tours I went on with Marcel! Firstly, his shop is nice and central and easy to get to. Secondly, Marcel does a really good job of selecting the correct trail for your ability with his broad local knowledge of the surrounding trails. Thirdly, the equipment is extremely high tech, I have been riding for 4 years and never ridden bikes like he has in the shop! Additionally, me and my friends needed to go down to Santa Cruz and so Marcel offered and took us down to our hostel! I was in S.F. for a vacation and wanted to get a ride in. Did the half day tour with Marcel and had a great time! He picked me up from my hotel and had a new Santa Cruz Bike for me and all the gear I needed. Made it super convenient and was really fun to ride with. He also helped me with my cornering technique. I normally dont leave reviews, but this needs it. Everyone here will help accommodate you. No matter how stupid your questions maybe, they are willing to answer. I payed for a lesson, it was 3 hours. We found a good trail near me, so I didnt have to go far. Marcel films you so its easier for you to know what you are doing wrong and what you are doing right. This makes things so much easier. Marcel encourages you to push further, and importantly pushes for safety. So you gain some confidence. I 100% recommend anyone who wants to start or explore their mountain bike career further to take the plunge and get the lesson

Ive been to most bike shops in SF multiple times, and this place is by far the best.The staff is super welcoming and will always go the extra mile, even if its just offering advice and tips on something. You can tell they love what they do, which makes it super enjoyable to shop there.

Great shop. I had just flown in to ride Santa Cruz and found my bike had been damaged on the plane. They got me up and running the same day so that I wouldn’t miss my ride the next day. They also checked the bike over for me and found some quick things that needed adjustment and took care of me for no charge.

Marcel and staff are very Friendly, knowledgeable, Courteous and helpful. They dont just sell you bikes, but take you on trails, teach you the basics, coach you on improving your riding abilities. Small things make all the difference, the right set up of your bike ensures a Safe and fun ride. I got to experience all of that first hand on a tour of the Water Dog trail with Marcel and Sandy. I am hooked for life.

This was my first time on a mountain bike tour. I had a blast with Marcel as my guide. We rode a half day tour at China Camp Park on a 2018 Santa Cruz Bronson. The service and equipment is top of the line and a value for the thrills these tours deliver. I really appreciate how Marcel took the time to not only custom fit the suspension to me but also taught me so much about the mechanics of a full suspension bike as well as some really useful riding tips. I also really appreciate how Marcel basically takes care of everything from coffee, water, snacks to even taking pictures! He takes amazing photos. I truly felt pampered and spoiled with all the tour had to offer. You can hardly tell the miles you are putting in with how these guys set you up. Which reminds me, I also really liked the pace of the ride and the frequency of stops.

What a great experiance! Marcel knows his stuff, very educated all around with biking. He sets you up very nice to the point where you dont have to worry about a thing when you ride the big trails in Cali. Had such a blast, will definitely do again when Im back here. Oh, and the E-bikes is a must if youre not use to the long climbs. Very satisfied with everything.

Booked a mountain bike tour at the end of a conference I was visiting San Francisco to attend. I would give High Trails Cyclery & Tours 10 stars if I could. From initial booking to Marcel checking in on us at the end of our day long adventures - it was a top notch experience that I would not hesitate to recommend. Marcel was an amazing guide and our small group had a blast exploring a 12 mile loop in Tamarancho near Fairfax. He had everything we needed to supplement the gear we had brought with us and spent time to make sure our bikes were set up the way we wanted. We went unguided in the afternoon and rode from Mt. Tamalpais back to Marcels shop in San Francisco (~50km). The guys at the shop greeted 3 exhausted riders warmly and help us check in our bikes when we got there later in the day. Just a great experience on a bike facilitated by Marcel and High Trails Cyclery.

I visited San Fran from Australia on a business trip and really wanted get get a no-hassle riding tour in while on my short stay. Marcel turned up to my hotel with EVERYTHING i needed.. including a fresh Coffee and a brand new Santa Cruz Bronson.We rode University down in Santa Cruz then had a great meal and couple beers after. Marcel is a champion - id recommend anyone into mountain biking and visiting the San Francisco area to give him a call and hell sort you out! My only regret was not having more time to ride!

Buying a bike here was a very pleasant experience. I was a complete novice when I came in to buy my first road bike. They were very patient with me and helped me find a bike that I love, answering my questions and teaching me a few things along the way. What really made the experience memorable for me is the friendly and courteous staff, its one of the great things that separates high trails from the other bikes shops in San Francisco. Great service and friendly staff over 6 years since I got my bike from them, they explain what and why you are buying, what doesn’t need to be fixed and what does. I trust them so much that I just let them do whatever is needed. You can ship you bike to or from here if you are moving. Unlike other shops, they actually test ride the bike and making sure it’s fixed.

For 10 years, these guys have been the best. I bought my Globe Live 3 as a high end commuter and they kept it in absolute top condition for me, until it reached its last mile, even after Specialized stopped making it. Marcel and Brian are both kind and honest people- I always feel a warm sparkly feeling inside when I leave the store. Its that kind of shop.I got a bike fixed when the inner tube blew out, and Marcel told me the bike needed all these things fixed, but it probably wouldnt be worth it (instead of fixing it needlessly and charging me all that money) because the bike was worth $150 [≈ Household daily income, 2011] and the adjustments would cost almost the amount of the bike!So I bought a new road bike from them and have loved taking it for rides.Brian did an excellent job fitting my bike, telling me about what he was doing each step of the way and even explaining the muscles in my body and different positions that his adjustments would cause my body to move in.He didnt try to sell me any extras on my bike, like clip-in pedals or cycle shoes. I felt very comfortable with him.Another time I came in with a bike with a chain that kept coming off. Steve figured out what was wrong and took the time to explain how the cassette and gears worked to me and how/when to shift gears to reduce wear and tear. Love it!The shop also does weekly rides around the bay, and I can tell they aim to build deep relationships with the customers they have.

Best shop and service in the Bay! In my opinion there are two things that set a shop apart when it comes to service. 1) when u bring a bike in with an issue they look at it on the spot and give u their best evaluation of the issue and timeframe of repair vs write up a work order and tell u to wait for a call. 2) they are conscious of the fact that being without a functioning bike sucks. Maybe it is your only form of transportation, maybe its how u blow off steam. Either way they get it and keep you updated on job and time line and work hard to get it back to fast!

Very poor customer service experience here.Being someone who just moved to San Francisco and who rides Santa Cruz bikes, I figured I would bring my bike to this local Santa Cruz dealer for service. I entered the store with the intention of getting my rear brake and dropper seatpost installed, as I do not have the tools at home to perform this task myself currently. Before handing my bike off to the mechanic, I asked if I could borrow an 8mm allen key to tighten my pedals and make an adjustment to my chain guide. I thought this was a very reasonable request considering the shop was empty and the mechanic was sitting on the computer, not wrenching on any bikes.The mechanic then said that he could not give me an 8mm allen key because it would take too long for me to do my work on my bike. When I assured him that I was an experienced mechanic and that it would take under five minutes, the mechanic said buddy, I remove and install cranks every day, its going to take longer than you think. Being a prior employee at the company that designed and manufactured the cranks, it felt very demeaning to be spoken down to by the mechanic.The mechanic then begrudgingly handed me the tool as if he was doing me a huge favour by allowing me to borrow an 8mm. I then stepped outside, performed all of the work on my bike in five minutes, and handed the tool back to the employee.After this poor customer service experience, I took my bike to another local shop to have the rear brake and seatpost installed, where the staff were much more friendly and helpful.Being someone who is an avid cyclist, I value having a strong relationship with my local bike shop. Ultimately this experience turned me off of this store, and I will bring my business somewhere else where the staff are more supportive and friendly.

As a very keen cyclist Ive encountered numerous bike shops both in the UK and in the USA and in my opinion High Trails is up there with the best of them.Friendly service, impartial advice and a honest and open approach make it a great local bike shop whether its purchasing a carbon S Works or getting a puncture fixed theyre one of the best bike shops in the city.

Marcel and his bike tours are AWESOME! I flew in from Singapore for work and wanted to get some riding in. Marcels tours stood out because they offered door to door service. They get you from your hotel/accomodation take to the trails and then send you right back to your doorstep. Food, water, helmet and safety gear provided. You just need to show up in your riding clothes. He really goes the extra mile to ensure you enjoy your ride and also captures some nice photos along the way. The bike was awesome and he made sure that everything was dialled in to my liking before we started. He will definitely be on my list the next time I visit San Fran. I would recommend him to everyone looking for a great fuss-free mountain bike ride, even if you dont have a bike with you. He also has ebike options if your fitness isnt quite where youd like it to be. It was worth every dollar i paid.

I had been wanting to buy a new bike for a while and had called High Trails in advance of going in. I spoke to Bryan on the phone and he was very knowledgeable and helpful. When I went into the store, he was even more helpful explaining the different features on the bike, etc. I ended up buying a new bike from them and I am very satisfied with the bike and the people I interacted with at the shop!

These guys hooked me up with a pretty slick new frame for a discounted price, just because. Im a fan for sure, friendly staff. They even offered me coffee while I waited for my tune-up to be done! Coffee + bicycles = my heart.

Saved the day! My bike needed a quick repair and another area bike shop was unable to fix it, but the High Trails team was able to fix it in minutes!

Excellent service, the staff is very friendly and helped me to get a really nice Mtn bike that I could enjoy as a beginner.

The store is nice and they carry many products, but the products are a bit pricey and the service is expensive. I purchased 36 spokes which I found elsewhere for a dollar a piece, but it was 1.50 a piece for spokes that were bent. Although the mechanic was knowledgeable, he did charge quite a bit for measuring a hub.

The work done on my bike was very well done.I went into the shop with a derailler / rear cog issue. The told me what the problem was and said they could fix it on the spot. After some work on it, the problem turned into a greater problem, and they went over and above to make sure I was a happy customer in the end. Super happy with the work they did.

Long time customer- I have bought three bikes from high trails over the last 7 years. They carry exceptional inventory (e.g. Specialized and Brompton) but the service keeps me coming back! They take such good care of their customers. Id never take my business anywhere else! Genuinely nice and very talented people. Highly recommended. Also, if you are considering getting a folding bike BUY A BROMPTON. Possibly the best purchase I have ever made.

I come to High Trails because I trust the them with my Bicycle Love and their expertise. If they recommend that I need a new brake cable, its not an up sale for them, but the rather a brief that I geninuely need them. I cannot count the numerous times, that I came to Marcel and Steve and told them I needed a X part because I read something on the Internet, and they told me to not to worry about it and to wait until it truly needed to be replaced.Their earnest desire to bring people into the world of cycling is further demonstrated when I wanted to get into Mountain Biking and Marcel invited me to his group rides to teach me the 411 of mountain biking even when I already had a MTB! There was no sales pitch there! He made it both easlier for me to get into the sport and took the time to even give me a ride to the local tracks!It is worth to you to make High Trails your Local Bike Store.
