This is the place to go for leather items that are of both high quality and variety. The associates are very interested in helping you find the exact fit before you purchase anything. They are very hands on and knowledgeable. I highly suggest anyone with an interest in the leather scene to check it out and go down the spiral staircase to where most of the leather products are kept.

I could not find quality leather gear..

Reading some of the negative reviews, Im quite surprised. Im glad I hadnt read them when I decided to go today. I have never, ever participated in the scene nor had any desire, ever. But, a couple of weeks ago, I met someone who introduced me to it, and I discovered a side of myself that I never knew I had. I say all this as background info so that you can imagine how awkward I felt making the decision to go into this store to buy my very first gear, a leather jockstrap. Well, suffice to say, I had the most amazing experience. The two men I encountered, David and Rowdy (sp?.) were extremely welcoming and encouraging. They made me feel great about myself and my new journey and offered much advice. i was unsure of what to buy but, after some engaging discussion, we decided that the leather jockstrap would make a great first purchase. I got to try it on, and had it altered right then and there to fit me as well as possible. Im normally very shy and self-effacing, but i was chatty and smiling and laughing because I felt so comfortable. I really did have a warm and wonderful experience.

This place is incredible! Dont be fooled by its tiny exterior, though... it truly is a massive space with endless goodies (think Mary Poppins bottomless carpet bag). Everything was well-stocked, nicely displayed, neatly organized, and very clean. The guys there are extremely helpful, offering some of the best costumer service Ive ever experienced. Not only are they informative and professional, they are truly friendly, approachable, and genuine: pure gentlemen.

You are better off ordering online from doghouse leather or mr s leather. They are much more helpful with orders and getting you what ya need. They care a lot more about customer satisfaction and will go out of their way to give it to you. This guy won’t lift a finger.Trust me your money ends up better spent at these other shops where they will treat you very well and actively work with you to get you what you want. 💗

For all the bad reviews out there..Don’t beat too much on that NYC institution: it is truly one of the last if not the last store of this kind in the city. It can get a little intimidating stepping in and the boss at the door can can give it to you “New York style”once in a while but their products as well as the craft they put into them is just unmatched anywhere else.

If you like leather, the aroma of the interior of this store is alone worth the visit.

Excellent service by the tailors. Ive even brought in a G-Star belt to extra holes put in and they took care to cut off the extra length.If you are buying any gear, consider trying out on and working with the staff and tailor to customize the fit. There are lots of things that can be done to make it perfect for you and accentuate your assets.

Great folks who answered my questions.It can be difficult to find quality leather gear that fits my smaller frame. A huge thank you to Scott! They provided great conversation while I was getting custom fitted for my new harness.Since Im from out of town, its perfect that I was able to leave with the custom alterations within an hour or so! I dont shop for much here, maybe some underwear every now and again. That being said, theres a good, high quality collection of leather gear and restraints. There is a basement area down a terrifying stair case with more goods thats easy to miss. The staff are absolutely lovely.

Ive got mixed feelings on new developments at this place.On one hand, I see a business owner making descisions to make this place profitable, in a hard market, in an expensive part of town.On the other hand I miss the artistry of custom leather and gear. I miss the gear I could find here that would make someone go where on Earth did you find that? its awesome! And being able to smugly say oh its from this hole in the wall in Manhattan called The Leather Man.Do I want the place to die? No, so I get them changing their policy on carrying the custom gear they were known for. Stick to mainstream, typical stuff and stay alive.But when you really think about it, the fact that they lost that special edge means that maybe the part that matters is already dead.Surely there is a compromise that keeps the store special. Until I see one, I wont be back.

Excellent quality. They will resize gear you buy there, such as a harness, while you wait. Very helpful and hot staff. Pricey but its worth it to me to know the stuff is good quality without having to wait for it to show up in the mail. And BDSM gear is something that experience has taught me you do NOT want to stint with.

I dont shop here much, but one experience doing so was pretty awesome. I bought a pair of leather suspenders (to hold my pants up). The staff was knowledgable, helpful, and sized the suspenders for me while I waited. They put me in their mailing list and even had some nice options for people who shop there more frequently.

Easily the most helpful people you could ever work with. They let me browse, answered all of my questions, and even did a quick fitting. To top it off, the quality of their merchandise is amazing.

So Ive never written a yelp review or any review of that matter regarding an experience with a vendor. But Im making the exception. I just had the most unpleasant experience at the Leather Man with the person who told me he was the new management. After ignoring me for the longest while after I walked in...and I was the only person in the store...I told him what I was looking for and he said...youre going to have to talk louder Im a little hard of hearing with a glare. Like I should have known that. I was looking for a few items and he didnt seem to have what I had purchased there before and his response was very kurt with...this is what we have. When I told him I wanted to buy poppers he said we dont have those.This is where Ive always bought poppers because they have them formulated just for them and theyre the best. I thought he meant were temporarily out. He said thats all I can tell you they are a controlled substance and we dont carry them...google it. When I asked the they stopped carrying them he again said youre not speaking loudly enough...because you have ear buds in...which I didnt they were hanging loose...and said Im 81 years old and I dont want to go to jail and if you have a problem with that you can leave.Now mind you Ive literally spent thousands of dollars on gear and supplies at this store in the time that Ive lived here. Ive never had such an experience. This guy has a huge attitude and was spoiling for a fight from the moment I walked in. When I said fine just cancel the lube he was ringing up he said...yeah I thought I was going to have a problem with you.This is crazy. Im the last person to want to start something and treat everyone with respect and consideration. I dont know if the owners have any idea haw caustic this guy is with their customers but Ill bet if they knew they wouldnt want him there. Needless to say I wont be back.

Amazing little shop!!This is a great little shop and a neighborhood institution. I was looking for a leather harness for an off season buring man party and decided Id rather patronize this fantastic local business instead of buying online.Am I glad I went with my instincts on this one. I have seldom received such excellent customer service on my life (and Ive shopped a lot). I walked in there in a linen sundress, neither leather or a man so I thought I might be written off as a tourist but the gentlemen working there were so kind and helpful and got me all sorted out. Pricey ....good quality....new owner seems to be focusing on old school leather. The issue with the store is really not the quality of the product, it is fine. It really is the customer service level of the new owner. Twice I have been there and seen him either lash out or just be rude to customers. One customer asked about custom work on some clothing and the clerk explained they dont do that anymore, politely and trying to be helpful, the new owner jumped in and started berating the customer saying why would we do that? you didnt buy it here it was just rude. Further if you read his responses to negative reviews he just insults people. Look its his store, he can do what he wants, but in todays world where Amazon will deliver the same product cheaper no one needs to put up with bad service.

I called the store to ask if i could return a harness i had purchased a couple months ago that had not been worn more than trying on in the store. The harness didn’t fit the way i liked and i explained this to the man on the phone. The man told me i could bring it in for either a return or store credit. I went to the store on Christopher street in NYC and the man who took my phone call was working and remembered me calling. I explained to him again why I’m returning and he said there is nothing he can do. I wasted two hours of my day to come down after he gave me verbal confirmation i could return the harness. The gentleman could have explained to me on the phone that it was not returnable and i could have saved the trip. It’s a simple business practice of being honest and clear over the phone. I will not be giving this store anymore of my business and i am telling all my friends who frequently buy leather products and such to not shop at this store.

I come here every year when I travel to NYC. This is the best place to get leather in the US, period. Their customer service and willingness to custom fit leather pieces for me wins me over, and their prices arent crazy high like they are in SAN FRAN.
