This diner opened thirty years ago near the United Nations and has never ceased to disappoint. The menu is familiar but the quality is otherworldly. The food is sophisticated takes on American standard cuisine and has been re-engineered to be an American cultural mecca. As a true culinary Ambassador for a much maligned cuisine it serves to remind the world that the USA has some cuisine worth respecting. Furthermore, the prices are not bad either and are commensurate with other diners in other boroughs, which is miraculous for a Turtle Bay location. Decor evokes a standard 50s Airstream diner. Excellent food and service. This is where we go to hide from the UN.
Expensive. Small selection. I am sure it is due to COVID. The seating nice though.
The food is consistently good here. Everything that a diner should have is on the menu. Good coffee w refills. I am glad they are still open. Outdoor seating available.
Great food & great people. Loved the breakfast so much we went back the next day. The Red Flannel Hash was amazing!
I went to the diner yesterday (07/26/2021) after a doctors visit right around lunch time. The place was pretty empty and I was able to choose my own place to sit. I ordered and the food came pretty fast. I noticed a young family with a sick child 2 tables over. They had lunch, the kid was jumping around despite the obvious illness. A few more people walked in and we all smiled at the kid. The waitress, Alex, was on her phone for a while which I thought was strange. The family with the child left, I noticed that they did not pay. I asked the waitress why that was. She explained to me that the kid was sick and needed medical attention, so to ease the burden she gave them a free meal. I was taken back !!!! Turns out that she was on the phone with a medical office because of her daughter needing help. This place goes out of their way, they feed the homeless for Thanksgiving (Saw that on their Facebook page), they pay it forward. So, when you get there, pay for an extra coffee or an extra meal and have them give it to someone in need. We need more places like this, BRAVO !!!! I WILL be back !!!!
I was super excited to try this place, but unfortunately let down. I ordered carry out for two very simple meals, shouldn’t have taken longer than 20 minutes to make. The website told me the food would be available at 11:03 after I ordered. After the 30 minute train ride to get there, arriving at 11:20, way past the time my order should’ve been ready, they told us it would be a 30 minute MINIMUM wait time to get our food. Very unprofessional management and poor service. Will not be going back.
One of the worst service in restaurants I have ever tried, went there for breakfast. For one person they will not allow you to set on a table instead they say go to the bar and the old lady didn’t even say it nicely.what I cannot accept is that the bar was dirty and I can see some kind of small flies around which means unclean surface also they leave previous customers used plates on the bar for a very long time so it feels like setting in the middle of a pile of garbage ….the food is not that good and service is very slow I actually had to wait 10-15 minutes in order to get the menu only thing that came fast was the bill not worth itNever again
Really good spot to grab breakfast with the family if you are staying around grand central Station and want something traditional and at reasonable price. Service was amazing and enjoyed a good old fashion pancake plate
Very nice old time diner. The vegetarian chili is very good!!
My husband and I are staying at Wyndham across the street. I went to support a close friend at the funeral of her aunt and he went to grab a bite to eat. When he got there they seated a “white” woman before him. The customer said, “ This man was before me!” The lady said that she thought he was waiting for somebody. What an odd response. He was then seated in a booth and subsequently a man approached him and told him he can’t sit there with an attitude. Lenny said she seated me here. the man started yelling at the waitress that seated my husband. Then he clears another table and tells him to sit there. The customers were so disgusted with the way my husband was spoken to and being treated they cursed out the man and walked out. Three couples walked out all white couples. This goes to show you the we New Yorkers do not stand for this type of hatred. He was coming for breakfast that’s all he wanted. He did not have to be disrespected. We are a family a melting pot of all races from so many nations that’s the beauty of NY it’s diversity.Comfort Diner doesn’t like blacks and treats then poorly no one stands for it not even whites. Thanks for staying up got my husband my fellow NYers we love you! He’s such a nice guy. He didn’t deserve that. 🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲
Nicely styled American Diner, close to Grand Central but not on a crowded street. The staff were super friendly and efficient, the menu was the usual broad diner options, and the food itself was generous and tasty. The one downside is the place is very much split between the front and back. While theyre both a similar look, the back is near the kitchen and therefore much hotter, but also (maybe just our bad luck) more dimly lit. The front seemed airier and lighter as well as a more comfortable temperature.
I have been a fan of Comfort Diner since 2008. They had me at their 1940s style diner front and cozy old timey feel. The location doesnt hurt being so close to Grand Central in days of work commuting. This is not an area of Manhattan for parking. Maybe nights are different. Do try the Lemon Ricotta blueberry pancakes. Usually only available on weekends. They are thin and heaven on a plate. There used to be a pistachio crusted catfish with collard greens and sweet potato mash that was one of my favorite entrees but, its not on menu any longer. ☹ It was divine though. Weekends are packed here but service is always excellent and fast. Good going Comfort for staying around this long!!!
I had the Mexican breakfast and it is super awesome. Really good coffee for diner coffee. The ownership are very kind people we are working hard to bring the restaurant back to full service now that NYC is open. I highly recommend this place for a nice art deco environment and a little different Diner menu.
Waited forever while others got food. Hash was not as described. My waffle was soggy and cold. Potatoes and bacon tasteless. Service left a lot to be desired. Would not recommend or return.
Came here for breakfast. Had the lumberjack breakfast. It was 2 pancakes, 2 eggs and 3 pieces of bacon. Sooooo much food! But so good! My husband had the Imagination Omelette. It came with home fries and toast. Again... Soooo much food. My friend that was with us had waffles with fruit on them. They looked amazing! I absolutely recommend giving this place a shot of you are in the area.
This place has some true diner elements including being about as thin as an actual train car, but don’t let that stop you from getting a true NYC diner experience. The meal value was not bad at all. Some improvements could lie within having a place for guests to seat while they wait for the rest of their party to arrive since they will not seat incomplete parties despite the fact that they easily could when we were there. Also they do not let you get a to go cup of a bottomless beverage which was a huge turn off and quite frankly made no sense what so ever.
Classic old-school NY diner. Looks like its family-run. The food was good, and the service was fantastic.
When you combine the friendly staff with the great food, you have an old school diner that you will find yourself returning to over and over.
Really tasty breakfast. Service was very nice too. Would go back.
Top notch diner located a couple blocks away from the United Nations. The service was fast and friendly, the prices were fair and the portions were large. Oh, and the food itself? Delicious! Definitely stop by for some excellent diner food!
Love the genuine retro of this diner right down to the sports trophy lamp bases and the leatherette booths!
This restaurant has fantastic service as well as delightful food. One of the best restaurant in the city. The meals came out quickly and the prices were affordable. Recommended.
If youre looking for basic, this is it. Nothing special but nothing bad about it. I didnt use the bathrooms but my friend did and the reviews about them being in a creep area of the basement are apparently true.
A go to spot for a late night outing. The prices here are very reasonable, the food is filling and the service is great as well. They have a great menu selection and food is pretty tasty too.
What an amazing Diner, I think I would use the word authentic... it’s not trying to be a Diner but is a diner... the food was amazing... had the lumberjack and the best pancakes I’ve ever had ! And the a good price !The service was great, very friendly... I would recommend this place if your looking for a real diner and not a TV themed diner !
Got there, asked to be seated outside, woman said go right ahead. Sat down for 30 minutes without getting a menu, I went inside myself to ask for menus, the woman said a man would bring it out for us but he never did. Sat down for another 5 minutes then got up and left.
Nice staff.great food, Decently priced
Food was great and staff was friendly!! Great place and good value.
I seldom if ever give 5 stars to a restaurant. This place is a real treat for anyone wanting to experience the true American breakfast/lunch/diner. We had burgers (the sliders for the kids), the “all year round Thanksgiving meal” and the meatloaf and my oh my, they didn’t lie when stating this would be better than your mother’s. It indeed was, and much more! The staff was real nice too as we discussed how immigration has built and is still shaping America. The whole family (from 1 to 11) loved it. My favorite in NYC for sure (so far).
Im not one to write reviews, but this is by far the best customer service experience I have experienced at a restaurant post pandemic. Not to mention the food is AMAZING.
Clean, with super gentle waitress, had a simple eggs and smoked salmon. all good and well done. for a midtown diner experience not to miss
Bad food, bad service, and horror movies could easily be filmed in the dungeon-like bathroom in the basement
Delicious, interesting breakfast. The red velvet hash with sweet potatoes and beets was a really nice twist on one of my favorite breakfast dishes.
Omg you have to go an try the Red Flannel Hash so deliciousThe coffee was delicious for a dinerFluffy fresh omeletGreat staff and serviceThe bathroom experience was the only negative
Was desperate for some good ole diner breakfast. Ordered bacon, pancakes and coffee. It was delicious. The diner could use a cosmetic upgrade. There were 4 people seated together at one table. I sat on the other side and one table over due to Covid. The waitress was very friendly and attentive. I felt comfortable and safe as the staff adhered to the covid policies.
We came in on a Saturday morning, the place was not even full, but our food took more than half hourI ordered a steak and eggs, which came very very bland. My wife ordered the huevos rancheros, and it literally had only five individual beans sprinkled over the cheese with no salsa.
Great food, loved the pancakes and great staff overall. You can tell they were extremely overwhelmed and forgot one of the items on the list but they offered to personally deliver that one item. I would come back here again and again. I just wish the fruit bowl had more array of fruits.
Was looking for breakfast. An old diner, could use an upgrade but very good food and the staff was very friendly and adhered to the Covid protocols, bringing takeout to customers at the door and wearing masks. I did eat indoors and there was a table with 4 occupants enjoying their meal.
Because of COVID restrictions, there was NO indoor dining available. Was in NYC for a meeting that ended up being pushed backed 30 minutes after already arriving early.Wanted something to eat while wasting time but was not having any luck. Literally walked right into this place that had a make shift seating area for us to have a sit down breakfast. It was really cold and although we were seated outside in this make shift area, it didnt few that bad. Really wishes they had heaters inside. It wouldve been perfect.I was surprised by our food. We shared a meal but it was fresh and large enough for us to share and have some left over. My scrambled eggs were a bit runny but otherwise everything was god.
Great place ! Service was great and food as well . Never felt so comfortable, will definitely come back . +their birthday cake that they did for me was delicious ! ☺️
Very old school New York diner. It’s a small business owned by the loveliest family. Super kind, attentive and great hosts. Their blueberry pancakes are to die for.
Such a gem. The people who run it are so nice and the food is good
The food and service here kept us coming back every morning during our trip to New York. The manager Dahalia runs a tight ship and you can feel that everyone loved working there. Absolutely get the lemon ricotta pancakes. I would have taken a picture, but each time there were in my belly before I got a chance to.
The service was terrible. We sat down and our drinks order wasnt taken until 15 minutes later. They forgot to give us the drinks. We ordered our food and waited 40 minutes for the food until we decided to leave. There was also a musty smell lingering in the air.
Huge portions, busy. Older and a bit cramped.
Old time style diner...good food and breakfast...close to grand central station
My lady says the Challah French Toast is heavenly
I had a cup of the vegetarian chili, it was delicious! The cup of chili was the perfect bite on a cold day. Everyone at the diner was so nice too.
The was prepared just how I like. Great experience the food was great 😊 an the host is nice.
Delicious filling breakfast a short walk from Grand Central. Friendly staff and reasonably priced.
Great food. Erick and Dalia were fantastic!
Great little diner and delicious food! Love their omelet and strawberry French toast, and the staff is quite amazing
Affordable, tasty and amazing service! Will definitely be back.
Great quality food! Highly recommended. Fantastic omelette
Love this place. Great little neighborhood diner, super friendly staff, and the steak & eggs are delicious! My son and I have become weekly regulars since coming to NYC. Offers both indoor and outdoor seating.
Amazing place on the West Side! Meal sizes are appropriate for the value and the food tast great!
Great service and food. Large portions!
Bathrooms are disgusting!! Mops are dirty !Wipe off tables with a dirty rag !!
