Cafe in front is terrific but the real gem is the bar in back. We had the pleasure of being served by Brian, who was not only gracious and friendly, but also deeply knowledgeable about the beer list and a whiz with the cocktails. The Roost is one of those rare places thats fantastic day AND night. Dont miss it!
You are not allowed to sit inside unless they see you consume the alcohol. And I am not talking about paying less money. I offered to spend money to be able to sit inside the lounge area. Disgusting and discriminating, the most unwelcoming and vice pressuring establishment in existence.
Calling all coffee lovers!! One of the many coffee shops in the city that never sleeps of course. This coffee shop in particular is extremely authentic European style coffees, lattes, macchiatos, mochas, etc.LOVE! Barista knows exactly what shes talkin about, all the varieties of coffee, and how to make the perfect cup of joe in whatever way you may want it. I was very impressed! The decor makes this place even more inviting.Scones delicious and loved that they had a variety of biscotti flavored treats.
Love this place, best matcha lattes
My favorite saturdays morning coffee! Nice music and relaxing ambient.
Home away from Home. Love You Vito + The Roost
Very unwelcoming barista, and a stuck-up bartender who is looking down on customers.
Very friendly people and place to have a good coffee or matcha latte 👌👌
My Fav place here in NYC!
High pricing for the area. Many of the baked goods and coffee can also be found for less and better quality around the area.Be aware!
In my opinion, these are the best lattes in the East Village. Whenever I visit, I make an effort to go multiple times.
Great coffee. Great bar in back. Great vibes. Great for all the beverages.
The staff are personable and funny. Great spot for studying in the front or having a laidback drink with friends in the back. I enjoy the coffee and beer selection and sometimes buy coffee beans for home.
The bar in the back has the slowest service. I should have known something was up with this place when the Friday happy hour was pretty dead. Every time I went to the bar to grab a drink for myself or my friends, I had to borderline aggressively flag down a bartender for them to take my drink order even though there were two bartenders and less than ten people sitting at the bar.
Uncomfortable seats, long wait times, and REALLY inhospitable atmosphere. The bartender was extremely rude to us even though our big group was spending a lot of money there - he blasted music in our ears to get us to leave and when that didnt work he made us move. Not sure if we were in on a bad night or what but they do NOT deserve to be the best place to work from or any other accolades.
A nice little coffee shop with a truly fantastic bar hidden in back. Quiet and chill in a way I never expected to find in Manhattan. Truly a delight.
Very good coffee, but limited seating. They have a whole back room Ive never seen open even when seating is cramped.
Great place for a atmosphere and drinks. Food variety is small and they dont make a big deal of it. You can get a sandwich and pastry to go with a large variety of beers or liquors. There are 16 taps, many cans, and more bottles to choos from. The place has nice decor. A small pastry and coffee shop upfront, which is really a facade for the lounge and bar in the back. Lots of seating, nice open, lit and air conditioned space.
A gem in the city-- coffee place by day and bar by night. Has a very chill vibe that isnt too loud even during its busiest times, and an excellent selection of drinks, very well-priced. Seating options are plentiful with a center lounge area that can accommodate slightly bigger groups.
Really love the music at this place! Long [cozy] bar that gets super crowded at times, but nice jumping off point at the start of your night.
My friend introduced me to this place about a year ago and I have been back several times since. It looks like a coffee shop when you first walk in but then there is an amazing bar in the back. They even do live music sometimes. It is a good date spot in the East Village.
We tried the Roost cafe: had a pic at the back area, not open as yet till 6pm. The back was a speakeasy.Front is cozy, neat, with good service, barstools seating, good choice of croissant (believe supplied by Baltazar). Coffee flavour good, however not too well executed in its preparation especially in terms of density and temperature.
Nice neighborhood coffee place. Owners are nice guys. Turns into a bar at night, but I only go for the coffee. Balthazar pastries, but not a lot of food items. Like their choice of music which tends towards R&B.
I like it, I dont love it. The cafe is decent, but not mind blowing and its kind of pricey. Its fine, its good, its just not a gem in my opinion. The bar in the back is cool as all hell. and the reason Ive come back. You have a leather seating area in between and then this very cool hidden back bar. Similar to the cafe, the drinks and drink selection are fine, theyre good, but for that neighborhood you can find better. You come here for the atmosphere, and if thats what youre looking for, its worth it.
The food here is amazing and I love their service. The cocktails are very delicious and they have a great wine selection.
Amazing atmosphere and concept. Quiet for a date night. Comfy couches to get cozy in the back. Bar tender was amazing. Try a hot toddy for the winter. Highly recommend. Would love to come back for some coffee.
Great low key spot that is a cafe during the day, and a drinking spot at night. The place is very homey, like a friends backyard or a cool converted barn. Very nice bartenders and hipster crowds with good music.
So Ive been here on two different occasions: once at the cafe portion and once at the bar. Both experiences have been more than adequate and I really enjoyed the selection to choose from in the back. Theres a fantastic section of beer in the back, I didnt pay too much attention to cocktails and wine but my friend said that the Manhattan he got was good and I was really happy with the service. The cafe at the front is super cute and I like to get coffee there if Im just walking around East Village.
The front is a cute coffee shop and in the back there’s a really nice bar with a Wide variety of beers — gose, sours, IPAs, stouts, etc. great staff.
A coffee shop with a bar in the back and the coziest seating area youll find outside of your home. With a rustic industrial design this is the perfect place to meet friends, read the Sunday paper and even celebrate birthday. Have been going here since it opened.
Amazing coffee and staff.Sean is now a neighborhood friend. Great community vibe.
Coffee shop in the front, cool bar in the back. The place makes good cocktails and has a solid selection of wines. The service has always been really friendly, and the venue super cool.
I come here for coffee once a week and just checked out the bar for the first time. This place is awesome. Great drinks in both the front and back of the house.
You would never expect the chill bar located in the back of this coffee shop. Cool vibe, tables or couches to sit, and you could get food/coffee from up front and bring it back. As it got later it was packed and the music was blaring.
Didnt get to try a cup of coffee because they wouldnt take a $50 and had a $5 min for a cc. The coffee was great at the B Cup down the street and they were willing to take my money!
Awesome place with a cafe in the front and bar in the back. You feel like your entering an exclusive venue that only Alphabet City neighbors know about. Comfortable place with a speakeasy feel.
Great cocktails, large beer selection. Low key vibe.
Stylish coffee joint with a chill lounge area. The service was fast and the brews were full of flavor. TLC went into creating each drink. The beard game was strong at The Roost.
We went and had a couple of drinks here on a recent trip to NY. The bar is cute and tucked away behind a coffeshop operating in front of the property. The drinks were ok, nothing to write home about. The price was very reasonable for NY and the vibe relaxed and friendly. Great mix of a crowd for Saturday early evening.
The Roost is the best of both worlds - a cafe and a bar with the perfect vibe. Coffee & espresso is on-point, music is usually perfect, and the atmosphere is the right amount of modern rustic.
Nice cafe that turns into a bar. I like the baked goods. One of the first places in nyc to serve oat milk. I like they’re at the cutting edge of coffee trends.
Excellent food.. Nice big cup of coffee. Very cool atmosphere.. Lots of nice people.
Hidden behind a modest black and white themed coffee bar is a world of calm and relaxation where you can kick it on couches and drink beer or cocktails with your friends or your laptop. Great filtered light and a solid selection of taps make it one of my local faves.
Coffee is good, but they seem incapable of getting any order right. .. Time after time. You ask for a small coffee to stay, and you get a large coffee to stay - and when you comment or ask it in a to stay cup, you get a nasty response.I have officially given up on this place.
Quality has degraded over the past few years. Front end used to be a relatively quiet spot for a good cup of coffee, but now the usual experience is somewhat burnt, watered down, and loud -- this isnt because it is busy, just new baristas who play their music louder than you would find in a bar (and dont check the coffee!)
Real quaint place to go have a good cup of coffee or a lattePut Starbucks to shame
I dare you not to go to The Roost every morning if you live or work in the area. The Roost is a coffee shop at the front and a spacious bar at the back.At the front, the Roost not only carries Brooklyn Roasting Company beans, but pastries from bakeries including Balthazar. The almond croissant is undeniably scrumptious! Theres two benches outside and comfortable seating inside if you want to enjoy your espresso drinks, and couches in the back. They also serve some sandwiches.I havent been to the bar yet for happy hour, but the consistency of their coffee always brings me back in the mornings!Free wifi, solid private bathrooms, and admittedly loud music sometimes. A+
The best coffee shop potentially in NYC. Great wifi, lovely employees, plugs evrrywhere, good coffee and food. All customers know employees and feels so friendly and neighbourhood lovely cafe. Good music, clean toilets and in the backside there is a comfy bar
On point. The coffee is Brooklyn Roasting Company which is delicious. The barristas are pros. The baked goods are Balthazar. The bar in the back is perfect combo of chill and hip. Theyre doing a lot of things right.
Cool hangout. Sitting by the bar or chilling in the lounge area, this place has an amazing vibe. Good place if you want to connect to the wifi and get some work done during the day.
Coffee spot during the day, chill bar during the night (in back) w/ a good selection of craft beer and whiskey.
Clean, cosy and friendly place. The good thing about this place is that it’s open until late and you can spend time with friends there.
Both a cafe and bar that has a good mix of both atmospheres. Their baked goods are tasty and they have a decent selection of teas.
Coolest coffee shop in the east village/ alphabet city. Open late, awesome for that midnight coffee run when busy w school or work! They have the best bbq chips too:)
Good espresso awesome pizza 10/10 would roost again
Relaxed bar hidden behind a coffee shop! Forgot my wallet on the spot and got it back with everything inside. The employees were really nice and honest!
Had a pecan sticky bun and a mocha. It was the best I had in awhile. Really recomend the Pecan Sticky Bun ...delicious!!!
Gem of a coffeehouse/bar combo with a great beer list
Decent happy hour. Great beer selection. Usually not that busy.
The owner is not a good person. Avoid at all costs.
Stopped by here for a morning pick-me-up and ended up trying house iced tea as well. Both were pretty good. The music was low, and the barista was nice. I would come back here if I needed to study, or perhaps wanted to get away from studying. Ive heard that the cafe transforms to a bar in the evening; although, I havent experienced it myself. Disclaimer for the wifi-hobos: there are no outlets.
Great coffee! quite and hidden back room they are good with specialty coffee not much with the small regular black coffee for expensive $2.75
Great night out, capped off with an impromptu visit here after Tapas down the road and saw people hanging outside who were clearly enjoying
Nice low key spot.
Very good coffee excellent place to hang, Love this place, possibly the coolest coffee house/bar ever created
Hesitant to leave a review because it seems to be getting more crowded, but still too far east for the wannabes to venture. Great coffee and pastries.
Decent coffee, ok snacks. I like the coffee shop part more than the bar, but its cool that it is multi-use space.
Cool vibe—not many places can pull off a bar and coffee shop well
Great Coffee spot and bar in back with loft like space in between which is super dark but again good feel inside
Nice and quiet little bar behind a coffee shop, great place to relax with a couple of friends in a laid-back atmosphere. Great drinks and service as well.
The real place to eat empanada the best on Jamaica Avenue.
Incredibly rude employees. Mediocre food/drinks. Nice looking location though.
Nice little place with bakery, as well as a hidden bar in the back of the shop. Great selection of cocktails and beers.
Coffeeshop with bar in the back. Nice atmosphere and a dozen craft beers on tap. the taps are really quite good, and theres always room, and its a great place to hang out.
Great coffee, high prices, and every time Ive been there Ive had to wait a very long tome for service.
Regular customer here. Great place with great vibes, but unfortunately management is very rude and dismissive. Asked for the WiFi password and was spoken to as if I had asked an offensive question. Rude interactions with guests occurred throughout my 2 hour experience here. All the customers in the room made comments about how rude they were. If you cant be nice to customers who are there to support your business, dont work in the hospitality industry.
Great coffee and bar in the back. A decent place to grab a drink without being too crowded.
This place seemed pretty cool and the beers were tasty, but if you have the slightest mold allergy avoid!!! I’m severely allergic to mold and the whole place reeked of it, I had to leave because of an allergy attack.
Service at the cafe end is pretty poor, staff are rude. They have a thing about giving you a to go cup despite ordering to stay, when you ask for a to stay cup they look at you like youre an alien. Biscotti is great though and nice atmosphere in the bar at the back. Just a shame about the service at the coffee shop.
Unassuming coffee shop in the front and hidden door to the back opens up to an entire railroad style reclaimed wood bar. 25% off all bourbon on Tuesdays!
Super cozy, people were nice and welcoming and the hidden bar is super cool.
Coffee shop in the front, bar at the back and board games. Fun place!
Love the bar in back, especially during the day when light comes through the skylights
Would you believe great coffee in the front and cool bar scene in back?!
Chill bar with lots of space and a solid selection of drinks/beers
Extremely rude manager. Not a place to work. Constant consumption is mandatory to seat inside. Pastries are bad. No outlets to connect computers. Bad experience overall
One of my favorite speakeasies in NYC. Legit coffee up front and a cast of characters host the fun led by my man Vito!
This review is for coffee only: both my cappuccino and my wifes latte were watered down and tasteless. While it might be slightly better than Starbucks, there are several better coffee shops in the 5 block radius.
A fun bar behind a coffee shop (that is also open late).Nicely decorated, friendly bartenders, very decent prices.
Great beer selection and full bar, plus coffee. This place has it all and with a great atmosphere for working or chilling.
The barista was rude and the coffee was burnt. Not worth the $4
