Stopped in on a rainy day and ordered chai lattes, vegan peach cobbler, and vegan sweet potato cake with cinnamon buttercream frosting (hand for scale of items). Very delicious and made me want to try all the other vegan items on the menu! Cute decor and very comfy victorian style couch with fun little decor accents. Oat milk is the plant milk that they had as the option when I visited. Good option for bakery with later hours and a late afternoon sugar and coffee fix 😊
I love coming down here every chance I get when I visit Lawrenceville. I love how theres a lot of vegan options as well as regular options. Whatever you decide to order here you wont be disappointed.Today we ordered the butterscotch pudding. And the vegan sesame cake with chocolate icing and cold brew coffee. It was delicious.
We stopped in on a Sunday afternoon around 6PM. The inside of the shop was very cute and looked like an old-fashioned tea parlor. We ordered the butterscotch pudding and the orange olive oil cake with honey cream. The total of these two desserts was close to $14! The butterscotch pudding was served in an espresso cup so there was not much of it. We were shocked by the high price, but thought it could be worth it. We took the desserts home to eat.The butterscotch pudding was okay. Most of the olive oil cake was pretty dry, although some portions were moist. We did pick up the cake later in the day, so we may not have come at the best time. We would like to return again, but earlier in the morning.
Love the vegan options. Someone recommended the brownies. They only had the frosted one. A very good option! My daughter really loved the lavender cake with blackberry buttercream frosting. I couldnt believe how yummy the vegan sweet potato chocolate cake with cinnamon espresso buttercream frosting was. My wife especially enjoyed chocolate chip cookie sandwich with peanut butter buttercream frosting. Its all good 😋
We ventured out to The Butterwood Bake Consortium after dinner one night to try some of their pretty and delicious desserts. It was hard to choose given all of the variety that they have but I decided on the Blueberry Rose Cake with Fig Cream and hubby got the Frosted Brownie. The cake was light and the frosting now too sweet which is just the way I like it though I didnt really taste much rose or blueberry in there. The decor and ambiance are really relaxing and they have a cute patio in the back with a few seats.
Such a cute coffee shop and bakery! Tons of vegan options. We got a chai latte and matcha latte as well as a Strawberry Rose Cake and a Lavender cake with agave buttercream! All were so good, but the coffees are on the smaller side. Its not a bad thing, but if you are looking for Starbucks type portions you wont find it here. I highly recommend!
Pumpkin spice cake with Expresso.... It was literally to die for. It was Incredible. With a chai tea latte on the side..... My eyes rolled. I was almost pulling a Meg Ryan. I am not kidding.
Cool place, good treats. Very dim vibe inside, its hard to eat on many of the tables/chairs though.
Beautiful restaurant interior ambiance. All the food displays were absolutely stunning but tastes absolutely divine. Its a wonderful place to bring friends for an incredible intimate coffee or tea time session as they have a welcoming indoor and outdoor seating to sit and eat 😋 The hostess was friendly and welcoming. I definitely will be returning here. I recommend you give this place a try. Everything was delicious still cant believe its all vegan fare.
The baked goods here are on another level! Gorgeous, creative, and they range a good spectrum from small pies to full cakes, often decorated with earthy natural elements. Sadly, I don’t find their drink service as elevated as their baked-good-game. I have found their staff lacking in barista training for coffee, and when you order tea you don’t get a nice pot to accompany your dessert—you simply get a tiny cup.
Treats are excellent and the vegan options are really good too! Atmosphere is awesome - I especially love the courtyard in the back. Great spot for a date or to go with friends!
They had no coffee drinks at the time we went- not sure if thats regular occurance with covid because they still had a large board listing them. But the items we did get were pretty good. Got an array of baked goods and some were amazing and some less so but overall a nice product.
If someones next to you, as the place is small and quiet, it makes you feel like you ought to talk in hushed tones. We came for the hot chocolate, but they were out, pretty fair disappointment justifiably. They should put little menus or tags with the prices of the bakery items, because people hate asking and the average Joe and Jane struggle if theyre not quite middle-class. Too bad they cant figure out how to expand with other money makers, so that a slice of cake doesnt have to be $7. For balance: it was delicious superior cake with great texture, icing lovely soft and sweet without typical store bought biting sugary kick.
We have been to Butterwood several times. Delicious dessert opt I ons everytime. The cakes are light and a great mix of flavors. Highly recommend
Enjoyed picking out a mini cake. Cant wait to go back. Beverages are expensive for what they are
Incredible desserts, lots of vegan options which are just as delicious as those with animal by-products.
This place makes me so happy and they have delicious vegan options as well! Some of my favorite days ever have ended with visiting this place and grabbing some dessert :)
Cute and intimate bakery with delicious offerings-- you can taste the high quality of ingredients used and the pastry art skills are evident (I bake a lot myself semi-prof so Im pretty picky if Im going to shell out $$ for someone else to make it for me)We got the chocolate buttercream cake --2 days in the fridge and it STILL had a moist fine crumb and decadent chocolate frosting that I swear had mascarpone mixed in to give it a little tang to cut through the sweetness + also punch up the chocolatey flavorWe also got the butterscotch pudding cups and I will say they are THE perfect after dinner treat and unlike what another reviewer said theres far more than one teaspoonful of pudding, it was the correct balance and proportion of ingredients for me without feeling overly full or too sweetWe pay $15 for a similar dessert in Philly at Barbuzzo (salted caramel buddino) so I wasnt mad at the $7 price pointYou pay for the ingredients and the labor and Im happy to do soI HIGHLY recommend this bakery and will def be going back every visit to Pittsburgh 👌👌😍😍😍Fyi You need to order 48hrs in advance if you want to guarantee a cake though when I went on Xmas Eve there was still a great selection available to buy a la carte
Was walking around Lawrenceville last week and had a craving for something sweet. Ended up making my way into Butterwood Bakery and was pleasantly surprised. The decor was different from any other bakery I have ever seen, very comfortable and inviting. It really made you want to sit down, have a coffee, eat a cupcake and relax for a bit. I had a vegan peanut butter cupcake and a raspberry something, haha. Both were delicious and hard to pick a favorite. The owner Ally was very helpful in answering my questions. Highly recommend it.
The cobbler is good - the cakes are definitely way too sweet for my taste
The baked goods are quite unique and very delicious. They might look dry, but they were surprisingly moist but not overly sweet. The coffee also comes in eco-friendly biodegradable cups. With the caveat that Im not much of a coffee person -- my latte was perfectly fine, but the Americano was pretty sour.Theres also a small and cute outdoor patio with a limited amount of seating, and an adjacent parking lot.
Great food a lil dark reminded me of harry potter at wand store but great treats lol
I got the vegan variety gift box for my husband for Valentines Day. It was absolutely delicious. Fresh, rich, creamy. It was a lot of fun trying all of the different treats. We will definitely be ordering here again.
10/10 for taste, presentation and service. So easy to order online and pick up! Such a cute store. The cake was delicious--we especially loved the raspberry and rose and chocolate and peanut-butter. Will definitely order from Butterwood again!
Excellent pastries, and an excellent assortment of pastries! Im looking forward to spending time in their charming sitting area.
The price is quite high (maybe a little too high imo), but you get beautifully decorated cakes that are unique and tasty.
My boyfriend and I came here yesterday and they have the absolute BEST vegan food in all of Pittsburgh. Amazing staff, super cute decor and atmosphere, and perfect little quaint outdoor patio to enjoy your cake! Will definitely be coming back soon. Bakers with pure heart and love in every bite.
Aesthetic! This place has got it! It has a gorgeous, well thought out concept and design. The atmosphere is delightful! The Macchiato, divine! It was salty, sweet, bitter, and creamy everything you want in a good shot, and only 3$! My friend had the cold brew and raved, no cream needed! We enjoyed a Strawberry Mousse Tart, a Raspberry Rose Cakelet, and a Noir Brownie with Peanut Butter Cream Filling! DIVINE! The brownie, very easily the most delicious I have EVER had, crisp buttery exterior, gooey fudge interior, and the peanut butter filling not to dense, not too airy! PERFECT!Lets talk prices we paid 28 dollars for 2 coffees and 3 desserts. WORTH EVERY PENNY, NICKLE, AND DIME. You can see the skill, care, and creativity behind every product! Good food, nay I say, GREAT food especially pastries, take time, and time is money! These prices are BEYOND fair for the services Butterwood provide!Highly recommend, will come back again, and again!
Sadly, the baked good looked better than they ended up tasting. Unfortunately, the pear cake was a big let down. The shop looked nice, they take cards, which is a big help because its a bit bougie. When prices arent marked the whole, If you have to ask, you cant afford it mentality comes into play. At least the boxes look nice.
Just spent $6.75 on the butterscotch pudding and when I picked it up it was on an espresso to go cup. Half the cup was whipped cream so I got about a tablespoon of pudding. I guess to people with a lot of money to spend this is acceptable? However my boyfriend got the cinnamon blondie and that was delicious and a good value for your money.
Not really my scene. I see the appeal to people into it. I got a cinnamon blondie brownie and a coffee. Wasnt anything special to me especially for the price.
I can’t stop thinking about my next treat from Butterwood! Totally addictive! I’ve been here a bunch and never had a cake, cookie or brownie I didn’t love.
Very tasty cakes with interesting flavours. I like to get vegan pastries because theyre always so dense and moist, and (in general) non-vegan things are usually hit or miss. However, the non-vegan cake we tried here was also pretty moist, which surprised me because it was naked, so I thought it would be on the drier side. My boyfriend said the coffee was one of the best hes had in Pittsburgh.
I wish I taken a photo, but it was too good and jumped right in. Buttercream was so tasty, light and refreshing. Go check it out!!
Best brownie and blondie I have ever had. Will be returning. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!
Love all there sweet treats many vegan options, Im not a vegan but I enjoy them all very delicious! Coffee is also wonderful.
Delicious cake and coffee!
They made a mistake, fixed the problem and gave me a full refund for the inconvenience. Happy with the experience
Delicious vegan options. Not too sweet with complex flavors and beautiful presentation.
I purchased a whole chocolate cake, which I had pre-ordered online. This was my first time buying baked goods at this shop today. My daughter selected the shop for her bday cake due to positive reviews online. I spent about $70 after tax etc. It looked nice but thats it. The cake was EXTREMELY dry and seemed old. The texture was awful for the money. We bake better cakes at home. Nobody at the bday party finished their slice and we all agreed Wal-Mart cake taste better and fresher. We ended up running out for replacement dessert tonight.
Amazing desserts.
Excellent cakes. Wonderful flavors. Constantly changing flavors and offerings.
First time visiting for my birthday and impressed is an understatement. Delicious vegan chocolate cake with an almond frosting & dairy free hot chocolate were the perfect pair. We were greeted and served promptly, the atmosphere was cool and inviting. Super comfy couhes!
Hands down best cake in Pittsburgh. Fantastic owner. Cutest shop in all the land. 10 out of 10 would recommend.
Cakes are always fantastic.
Charming and cozy, with great staff and plenty of fantastic options, including vegan options in both cake and ice cream. Employees are always courteous and helpful. Coffee is delicious, cakes are too, and they have interesting non traditional flavours that have never disappointed. Varying sizes to choose from, and they do have ordering options for full cakes available with enough notice. Smaller space, maybe not comfortable for large groups, but takeout is available and they are open late.
A more heavenly collection of baked goods would be hard to find once you enter this beautiful bake shop. Ending up in one of this shops creations would be any granule of sugars greatest aspiration in life. The flavors are always daring and enticing, creative but perfectly paired. The execution is always immaculate. After a healthy meal at a nearby vegan restaurant, I always balance the scales by walking down the block to Butterwood and end my evenings properly with a slice or two, or three, or more for later, of any their delicious offerings.
Very rich cakes, almost on the pound cake side. Very rich frosting...dont try to eat it all in one sitting. Love the velvet curtains, and red comfy chairs. Nice, casual place. Nice for small groups, dates, working, relaxing, or battling the Pokemon gym.
The food is good for the price, and they have several vegan options. However, I wish they had a menu on their website, and the prices of the baked goods are not prominently displayed. The cost isnt unreasonable, but I would prefer if it was clearly listed under each item. For those who drive, the small parking lot by the store is pay parking, and the street next to it appears to be as well.
I dont know that there is currently a place just like this in Pittsburgh. Being able to come in and get a slice of cake and a cup tea is really unique. It helps that everything they make is delicious. Personal favorite is the brownie!
I bought this for my sisters graduation from New Jersey (on line order). I went based on reviews and incredible website. Due to some glitch it didn’t get there on time, so the barista Mimi personally went and dropped it off at my sisters place. My sister loves this place and said the quality of the desserts is fantastic. We are in a time where customer service is dying, so I just want to give a shout out to this place for coming through and making good on the mixup.
Ultra cool funky shabby sexy place to bring your hot little dish . Coffee was just ok, but Ill give another try. Brownies excellent. One of only a few coffee/dessert joints open late. Would return.
My husband and I decided to go through with our wedding, which was scheduled for May 9th, but instead of our original venue we got married in my dads backyard due to Covid-19. Butterwood was so flexible and supportive during this time. Not to mention, we had so many compliments on the cakes. You guys rock!
Cute little coffee shop with baked goods. Several vegan dessert options! If youre there during nice weather they have a super cute patio area out back.
Fantastic little bakery! Gorgeous decor and delicious food. Had the lavender cake with blueberry icing...so good. Friends had the carrot cake which was also awesome. Really friendly staff as well!
This is a great place to have sweet and coffee. Delicious cakes and excellent espresso. Friendly people and cozy atmosphere. The lady who were working there was more than kind and offered us an extra piece of cake for free!
Beautiful old building, very pleasant assortment of pastries and coffee bar drinks, but maybe a bit too expensive for what you receive at first blush. But when you consider the trendy edge Lawrenceville has and the unique and tasty options the little cafe offers- it seems fair.My wife goes out of her way when we go out, the seldom times we are afforded a night without the little one, to enjoy the rotating options and sit on the cute outdoor patio area in back.
This is a very nice bakery and a great addition to lawrenceville. Everything has always been delicious and their employees are so kind and incredibly helpful. They have a very nice selection with a lot of vegan options. The store is so nice and relaxing inside too. Much better than a chain coffee shop and has plenty of room to hang out there.
So, so yummy... Super sweet staff and even sweeter goodies! AMAZING vegan options. I love supporting this business :)
Amazing selection of bake goods! Vegan treats are top-notch. Atmosphere is super cute and makes for a great post-dinner-late-night-date-night-dessert.
Lots of great vegan options!
Its not really a bakery, more like a coffee shop with whimsical decor and a lovely glass case filled with beautiful baked goods. Case in point: the coffee offerings are priced, but not the baked goods.Unfortunately those baked goods arent nearly as tasty as they look. And they definitely arent as tasty as the prices would lead you to believe.I give this place 3 stars because the woman at the counter was hella friendly and the fact they are open on Sundays is cool. But a $5 cupcake needs to taste better than something you can get a grocery store for $.69 and it certainly doesnt. The mocha brownie tastes like coffee grounds. The Blondie tastes like a sugar stick. The Earl Grey cupcake tasted like nothing. The raspberry cupcake was a standout, but still kind of fell short.
Small bakery offering coffee, hot chocolate, and baked goods. Open late and Vegan friendly! I got a Vegan orange cardamom cake with pistachio icing, and my girlfriend got a Vegan chocolate cinnamon cake. Both were amazing, you would never know the difference from normal baked goods. The decor was unique and comfortable, had a nice atmosphere.
This coffee shop is a hidden gem that has eclectic furnishings in a Victorian building. There is always vegan options available. The coffee drinks are authentic and made from natural ingredients. This is not one of those fake syrup coffee shops. Their atmosphere, hours and friendly staff makes this place unique in the Burgh.
This place never disappoints when youre in the mood for a delicious slice of cake or pie! Nothing like the loaded-with-tons-of-sugar-and-dyes cakes and sweet treats at the local grocery store bakery, or ANY other local bakery really. Imagine your grandma is a French baker/floral artist who has an entire collection of fresh, perfectly-sweetened, baked-from-scratch-with-love special treats waiting for you when you come through the front door! #bestcakeinpittsburgh
Very stylish little bakery! I had the brownie, and though it was very yummy, the edges were a little hard. Of course, I went at around 7:30, so its to be expected that it wouldnt be fresh. She did warm it in the microwave though (I think it was the microwave) which was a nice gesture.
Unique and quirky decor and desserts but a little overpriced, everything Ive had is pretty good but a few spoonfuls of butterscotch pudding is around $5-6 and I mean it is literally about 4 or 5 spoonfuls of food. Apple pie was a bit dry as well not nearly enough apples. The cakes Ive tried from here were good with more of a subtle flavor than an overpowering sweetness which I liked. Late hours are great.
Ally made our wedding cakes and they were SO DELICIOUS! Lemon buttermilk cake with vanilla mascarpone icing and lemon curd. Lots of guests said this was the best wedding cake theyd ever had. Not only were the cakes delicious and beautiful, she was really helpful throughout the whole process. We couldnt have been happier. Also a great spot to stop in for a slice!
Fantastic overall. A nice atmosphere with furniture and decorations. The staff has always been friendly and gone above and beyond what I expected their duties to be. Their coffee is phenomenal, made to your liking. The deserts are delicious with a selection of gluten-free and vegan options in addition to usual goods. Hip, trendy place, would recommend to friends and anyone else. Nice for a short or a long sit down.
Pastries are incredible. Tried some kind of cake with lavender(?) in it and its seriously one of the best cakes Ive ever had.
Tasty baked goods with vegan options. Not gonna lie... The vegan peanut butter brownie I had was delicious and not obscenely priced. If youve got a milk allergy this is the bakery for you.
I love coming here for dessert and coffee. Its a very romantic and unique atmosphere, so its great for a date, or even coffee and convo with a friend. I love this place. :)
YAS! Whats not to adore about a place that serves perfect coffee and heavenly (gimme all the cake!) homemade desserts that is open past 9pm (theyre open until 11 most days) in Lawrenceville! Throw in a smattering of friendly workers and a chic atmosphere, and this is my new go-to work-friendly meeting spot.Note: Try their homemade buttercream frosting!
This is a super cute place to hang out and have a coffee and cake with a friend or two. The drinks are good and the cakes are amazing.
People say the Oakmont Bakery makes the best cake in Pittsburgh, but it doesnt even come close to this place! Im not a fan of cake, but this place takes the cake on cake. The white cakes are very light, and perfectly sweet. Its not like eating sugar like some places. The icings they make are also light and even if you hate icing, you will love the icing here! If you are visiting Pittsburgh, you have to go here. If you live here and havent tried it, get up right now and go.
Delicious coffee shop/bakery with vegan options! Quiet and cozy, great to meet with friends or get some work done.
I walked in this place with not that high of an expectation. But dont ever judge a book by its cover because the Sweet Treats in this local gem was nothing short of amazing the best cakes around Im telling you you will be surprised just stop in
When i have guests from out of town I try and take them here for a quick sweet. All the desserts are always really good looking aside from being really tasty. The decor of the place is beautiful too, with a convenient meter parking lot right next to it, as well as plenty of street parking.
What a cute little place for a sweet treat. There was a great selection of fresh little cakes, cakes to buy by the slices and little pies, each one a different flavor. I cant wait to try another flavor.
