Service was nice and the place itself was so gorgeous omfg it was literally the prettiest and cleanest store I’ve ever been to. It was a pleasure to visit this place one day before Halloween to pick up stuff with my sister and friend. 4 stars because the things are severely overpriced, it would probably cost around $5~$10 less if you order it online, but the experience of picking the stuff out in person is fresh and it is Times Square, so it’s expected. Things cost about $10~$200 average depending on what you’re buying, but a manga should cost around $13. Theres a beautiful cafe on the top floor with the mangas and anime merchandise and the middle and basement floor just has cute Japanese magazines and stuff. Tax is around $4 also, but overall decent experience.
Kinokuniya is so popular, there was a line to get in on a Saturday morning. We waited across the street in Bryant Park and had breakfast, then enjoyed a few hours of browsing books on the too floor of Kinokuniya. They have the biggest collection of anime books, posters, toys, kits, accessories, and even a super cool bakery. The main floor has mostly books in English and is more of a traditional bookstore. The basement is very interesting with thousands of stationery items and also books and magazines in Japanese. Definitely worth taking the time to visit, explore, enjoy.
Talk about great service! I called from Seattle searching for a couple of old back issues of a magazine. They didn’t have them. I thought that was the end of it. Then later he called me back to tell me he had found them! I didn’t have good phone reception so it took a while to help me over the phone. I am very happy! Thank you!!
I came here last week and was pleasantly surprised with the manga they had, both in japanese and english. i also like the anime merchandise and figures they had here, as well as kawaii stuff too. down in the basement they had magazines plushes and stationery. i would come here again to buy something :)
I love this place. Nice book store at the first floor, basement has Japanese books and goods, and second floor has a café as well as all your manga and anime related items. The whole store has a nice atmosphere and the café serves good food. During Covid, there is a line to get in as they only allow a certain number of people inside at once. However the line moves quick and the wait arent long.
It has every manga but it’s pretty expensive! and it gets really crowded with a big line outside after 1 pm. The mini cafe just recently opened again. There’s also a decent amount of figurines. Also the customer service is good, if you’re looking for a specific light novel or manga, you can ask and they can help you get it easily.
This is a great bookstore with lots of books and magazines in Japanese. There are also books in English, however not as many. When you walk in they ask you to use sanitizer on your hands before going further. I usually end up browsing knitting and sewing section of Japanese pattern books. They have so many items cat/dogs centered - from scissors, pens, pen cases, bags, pouches,... On my last visit I got caps for my cats and a sewing book. I have been going here for years. The only thing that changed through the years is the little store to the left of the downstair staircase that used to sell leather bags and sake cups is now selling pusheen toys.
Three floors filled with books, magazines and dictionaries in Japanese (basement), books in English (first floor), and manga, light novels and figures that make you feel like you are actually in Japan (third floor). You will need a good bag to carry the weight of all the books you want to buy. Good selection for the people who is learning Japanese, youll find from Minna no nihongo to JLPT 5-1 books.
Great bookstore for any weeb to visit, their manga selection is huge and it has a very peaceful vibe. Definitely a must visit
One of the best places to get manga in NYC. They also have a tiny cafe on the second floor!
Clean, helpful and friendly staff. Will definitely be coming here more often!
Great for gifts! For yourself included! I just walked by randomly and ended up with 4 books and an adorable bag. So happy there is one in NYC, I only knew of the one in edgewater, NJ!
Beautiful bookstore with a wide array of English and Japanese books selection. The anime and manga section had everything you could desire or look for. The books were of exceptional quality with some coming wrapped or without the plastic wrap. The figure and souvenir selection was very good as well. The anime/manga section was well decorated and in the same floor was a cafe which Ill make a separate review for. They had one of the best Japanese learning and even English learning (for Japanese) book selections. Kanji books, grammar, JLPT, they had it all. I myself picked up the second level of Genki along with the workbook which i was looking for. They of course had other books such as Minna no Nihongo and what not. When purchasing Genki i was asked if I was a college student. Reason being is that if you are a Hunter college student you get a discount. So any Hunter College students looking for Japanese learning textbooks I recommend passing by here. If you are Japanese seeking Japanese books youll probably feel at home with there even being a kids Japanese book section. There were also supplies like books, pens, and more options. There even was an office and decorations section. I could spend the whole day at the store since its three floors filled with amazing products. The lady that attended my sale was very nice and respectful as well. Will come back here for my next New York trip.
They allow you to enter without a mask to stay in the facilities all the time, but when you want to buy a coffee they ask you do you have a covid vaccine certificate so you can sit there, something illogical if many people are also without a mask and nobody asks when entering
I loved this place, amazing store. They had so many books there I thought I would die, I Loved the third floor with all the anime giving clear directions on what books were english and what were Japanese. The under floor had art and school supplies. There were cook books, young adult books, kid books, fantasy, sifi, even wattpad books were at this store Im definitely going again!
Love it! Super friendly employees and great selections. HOWEVER!!!! Where are the gacha machines? 😭
Good selectionf of stationaries and japanese comic books.
This place is a great bookstore to buy Manga and Japanese books. They have three floors full of merchandise and books and plenty of things for most people interested in Japanese culture, reading and items. The third floor has some pretty hard to find art books brand new for a great price. They also have plenty of manga in both English and Japanese. It was an interesting stop and I enjoyed looking through their selection.
A great shop more European in appearance and feel just opposite Bryant Park.A greater selection of English and Japanese book, magazines and artwork.Somewhere to spend an hour or two browsing books, art, pens, pencils and 🎨 material for all tastes.3 floors of pure joy.
If youre an origamist like myself this store is where you need to go for all you paper needs. They have many different packets of origami paper. More over they have tons of origami books. This store is amazing. You will leave satisfied guaranteed.
Theres a ton of different things to buy. I wish I had more money at the time I went there.
There was so much Japanese literature and other media. The second floor is full of manga and anime merchandise, the first floor has Western authors, and the basement has Japanese books & magazines. I could easily spend an hour or more browsing, and thats without the crowds this place draws especially on weekends. It also has great views of Bryant Park.
This store is SO GREAT!! They have so many unique products and the manga section upstairs is great for any fan of japanese media! The little cafe up there also had some great food.
Great Japanese goods collection! A little bit expensive. Unfriendly security guy.
Amazing space, staff is very helpful. The bottom floor has a great selection of stationery. Lovely bookstore to visit on a rainy day.
If you are familiar with San Francisco location, this is nearly double the size and selection. Whether you are looking for a bookstore, fun stationary, or in Japanese or Japanese manga, light novels, literature, craft books, this is the place to go. There can be a short line to get in these days. Membership valid across locations.
This place seems like it cant keep up with demand and the cafe closes so fast. But its still one of my favorites. I havent been able to find my in-print favorites lately, but Im glad its still here.
Basement level contains Japanese literature stocked with both classics and recently published, along with unique art and journaling supplies. Main floor has your standard stock of recently published stuff in the States while the second floor is more pop culture/anime centric with imported toys and comics. You can seriously get everything you want and more.
If you are looking for Japanese imports of books, animation comics, tie-ins and large format hardcover books and magazines, this the store for you.Easy to find, the two stories are divided, the first floor is made of books and ketch. The second floor is dedicated to Anime, action figures, graphics novels. There is also a small tea shop. An Escalator leads to the second floor, with steps going back down to the first floor.
Great selection of manga, light novels, and anime figures on the second floor. Would recommend any fellow weebs to stop by if theyre in the area. Felt like I warped to Akihabara!
They come here for the extensive selection of Manga and anime. Some come for a heavy dose of Japanese literature and magazines, and small artworks. I come for the great selection of writers tools: notebooks, journals, fountain pens and ink, among so much else. Absolutely recommended.
Amazing bookshop, has a coffee store on the second floor
Awesome book store! A whole floor for manga and another one with Japanese books and look little accessories and stuff
Long line to enter because of the social distancing but it was a really nice store, was in there 2 hours but Id totally spent more time there
Its an awesome place to explore. Full of unique stationary products from Japan and plenty stuff stuff the anime fanatics!! 🙂
The best bookstore and manga store of NY, it has a great selection of mangas, light novel in English and in Japanese, theres a lot of cool merch like t-shirts and figures. The coffee shop makes it a good place to rest and enjoy your time :) overall its really great and if you have the chance you should check it out :)
Excellent store! We went there for my daughters birthday and while the store was busy we didnt have to wait in line outside and the cashiers inside are fast. Its also nice that they check to make sure you know youre buying a book written in Japanese....just in case you made a mistake and need the English version.
The staff is very helpful and efficient. The store has a great selection of books!
Could have used some expert help in anime area. No one was around
Loved this store! Found by accident walking by.. great prices and the elderly man who worked in there who I think was the owner? He was so funny! He shared so much information with me about his culture because I had many questions to ask him about certain items that I was buying and wanting to know about them.. Ill defianatly look for his store again when I go back!
Oh my god! I am an ultraman and kamen rider fan. The books are so nice. I would definitely recommend them. Mind, the three books down below are for kids, there are some games inside and they attached a toy to each one.
I’m not very happy about this place I wouldn’t recommend this place for English readers most of the stuff in English didn’t even have books in order of series and only like five shelves had English manga my school library had more mangas in English. But unless your a Japanese reader this is the right place for you since they offer a bunch of books for Japanese readers.
Sooo much stuff, I had a great time exploring everything they had especially the Anime and Manga sections
Great for East Asian imports of literature, premium stationary, manga, anime related merch. Their gunpla selection fluctuates, but their stuff is usually MSRP so you know you wont be overcharged to the point of hemorrhaging cash. But that doesnt mean EVERYTHING is fairly priced. Though you wont find a bookstore/anime merch retailer as organized and frequently stocked as much as this in NY. (R.I.P Image Anime. Please come back.)
Great selection of varying genres, plenty of manga upstairs, downstairs section has japanese titles along with stationary items. I like to just stop by and see whats in stock when Im near by. Good stuff :))
Great place for your foreign books n items needs! If your a NYC local or from out of town its a must see and shop!
Has a big section of Japanese mangas. Downstairs has cute shirts and tote bags too.Makes me wish I can read Japanese so I can buy their Japanese cook books. Love this place! They also have a cafe upstairs but closes at 6pm.
I love this book store if you love reading manga then this is the store for you they have a great selection
Its the Japanese equivalent to a Barnes & Noble. Which is not at all an overstatement. You wont want to leave.
Super busy but it makes sense. Great store with a cafe but you can’t eat inside currently.
Literally so cute, the plushies, the manga, the kawaii knick knacks and lots of other cute finds! Will definitely be coming again ^-^
Very nice bookstore with lots of japanese literature. Has plenty of manga and anime as well as merchandise. Also has some high quality stationary in the basement. Overall very nice spot to hang out and look through for a few hours.
Great stationary and books.
HUGE book and manga selection! I loved everything about this place. The variety, the merch and The Cafe!! I wish I could give it 100 stars!
Cute Japanese bookstore with lots of stationary, washi paper, and other treasures inside
This is a five, the reason being. That you can go to one corner of the store and find intricate information, that it seems like its coming from the air. The information the informative discussion materials themes its everything in one store. If you like comic books you like to read you like to be educated, you like entertainment. This is a place where you have to be seen. At times it resembles a busy Cafe in the central of Tokyo I am limited to Japanese that I speak but Im grateful for the store for finding my girlfriend. Things did not work out she was home sick so she had to return back to beautiful Japan. but the memories of this location. Is what remains in my heart.848-466-2821MOTA
Lots of diverse books and a large manga section on the second floor.
Awesome place. They have a bunch of cool trinkets and mangas as well as knick knacks from animes. They have some cool action figures and stuffed toys. Lots of sections with mangas. Cool shop.
Great place to find manga if you are looking for it they have it in English and available in Japanese. Also have some anime collectibles (figures, wall scrolls, plushies). Basement has art supplies and Japanese magazine publications. A lot of cool stuff. And if you like it try their Cafe their Onigiri is delicious.
This place is amazing! If you are interested in Japanese language books, this is it.I love that they carry a variety of Japanese books.I got myself a few copies of Case Closed and Juno Ito manga in Japanese.I’m so HAPPY!!
Cute little manga store that has many different japanese commodities.
Amazing service, always willing to make a compromise. Everything is organized and not to mention the white variety of Japanese items that they sell. My first time going was such an overwhelming experience there’s so much to take in so little time this is a story you definitely wanna go back to after going the first time especially if you’re an anime lover, writer or artist the store has some thing for all of us
Great selection of books (including kid books) on the first floor, Anime and Manga on the second floor with a sit down cafe, and pens galore with more books, along with toys on the lower floor.
Really nice staff and an amazing selection of mangas upstairs! I checked mostly upstairs and it really helped that they organized books by Japanese or English translated manga. I loved seeing all the merch and even concept art books/ sketchbooks by very popular artists. Overall a good time!
Great variety of books and very nice school/office supplies. I dont know anything about manga, but my kids said they have a quite good selection.
Good selection of unusual books. Large selection of Japanese stationary, pens, and books. Like a mini visit to Japan.
Visiting from Los Angeles..Staff was very helpful and we found what we were looking for.
Love that store ! If youre a fan of Japanese culture/ manga, this is the place to be !
Awesome experience, they had a couple of volumes of manga I was missing so this place made my day.
One of my favorite places to go to!it’s very clean and organized, and most of the things in the store are very cute!
First floor is the most similar to a traditional American book store.Basement has various Japanese goods. Stuff like stationary, Japanese agazines, tourist-y trinkets.2nd floor has Japanese animated goods/merchandise. Has a large selection, but is full- or above normal Japanese prices. A 2600¥ book from 10 years ago might cost 30-40$ at this location. This may be acceptable for rarer books as shipping from Japan can often cost just as much including the price of the book.
Its a great Japanese bookstore. Its like walking into a Japanese bookstore in Japan while also having products that cater to Americans like anime and comic books. Of course, everything is more expensive than in Japan, but that is to be expected.Just a small sampling of the types of products you can find: Japanese high fashion magazines, origami paper, and children thru adult Japanese learn to read / write lesson books.
The place is clean, employees are nice and great book, pens, and stationary selection. However, I could not find any merch for best girl Zero Two, so that is why you see a 4/5. This might be to me being blind, so Kinokuniya, feel free to respond with an image of zero two merch in your store and I will go pick it up and change my rating. Love you guys!
