Willy Street has a great selection of diverse products. Organic is the name of the game here. Locally produced items such as meats and baked items also take center stage. This is a store that will impinge on your budgetary criteria however. Want to buy a 50 roll bale of toilet paper? Better try elsewhere. As someone with out a disposable income I pay close attention to todays food costs. I love browsing the isles and taking in all the cool unique items but when it comes to the checkout lane I never walk out with more then 3-5 items. Organic and local are healthy and supportive to oneself and the micro economies they elevate but for the budget conscious they add up quickly and often lead to a gouging of other aspects of your budget.
Large market, nice wide aisles. Easy to navigate with their electric cart, which I need to use. Absolutely fabulous produce section - the best in Madison in my opinion. Very helpful and considerate staff. Love, love, love this market! My only criticism is that they only have one electric cart for shoppers who need it. Ive been lucky so far in finding it available, but I think it would be better if they have 2 carts.
Love this place. Please bring back the sunflower cream cheese sandwich. Put on whole wheat regular bread. Make it thick and top with tomatoes.onions.lettuce.cucumbers. this is how Ive eaten it for years at your sister stores.
Fantastic grocery store with great selection of local goods. Huge bulk section as well, which encourages a zero waste lifestyle. Selection of soap and shampoo bars is also very nice. Shopping here feels like shopping in a future where people care what they eat, where it comes from, all while getting better fresher food.
Since this is a co-op its not as cheap as other places which is to be expected. Theres a pretty good selection of locally sourced foods which is nice. The person at the register looked very confused when I was unable to provide my membership number since Im not a member. She didnt seem super friendly. This grocery store is really close to where I live which is nice but I cant afford to get most of my food here.
Good natural an organic produce. A bit high. Unfortunately their salad bar isnt running at this time. Saying something about the temperatures are off an are short staffed. I get 2 different stories; however was working Thursday afternoon. 😒 🤔 very strangeAn the lady who checked me out yesterday wasnt the most friendly/cordial person
I really only bought some tortilla chips. I renewed my membership I let lapse during 2020. Obviously plan to shop more lol
Great quality grocery store if you are looking for quality products (especially organic or non GMO)
I dont get to go here as much as Id like to, living so far away but when in madison, I make it a point to.Theyre a savior with their healthier food and on a personal note:In my older age, my gut and tastes have changed. This is the rare place, I can try new things and not worry.Because of their tuna burgers, I can still eat tuna. Love those things!
The food is good quality but the staff is pretty terrible at handling customer service. Almost every time I go in the store on the Northside, they are very impolite and awful at basic customer satisfaction. I expect better from the employees who I see often as I live nearby. Not saying all of them do this but the majority of the employees hate their job and it shows.
Larger, more spacious, and way more stuff than the east side co-op. Since theyre both equidistant to me I guess Im going to the north side from now on.
I have never really cared to shop at any Willy Street. I never use to until recently. To me many of them are wishing they had lived in the sixties. With the whole look ad same ideology. They are little demons when it comes to masks, from what other people tell me. That alone they have quit going into those stores. I personally do not like many of their attitudes. They believe they are superior to everyone. So, whether I have to go out of my way, I will go to Whole Foods.
The cashier was excellent and kind however when my beer would not ring up the manager rudely stated that the beer had not been put in the system yet and therefore she would not sell it to me (even though it had been placed out for customers to buy?). I understand the situation however the way it was handled has left a bad taste in my mouth. It was my first time shopping at the co-op and I dont think Ill be back at this location.
Nice employees, good atmosphere. Interesting and sometimes unique products.
Not a fan. Not a health nut so most definitely not for me. I just needed eggs. Regular eggs..That didnt happen. I dont feel this store is beneficial to the neighborhood its located in either.
Its not a place to go if youre just looking for inexpensive things. But, they do have a selection of stuff you cant find anywhere else.
Has fresh and healthy choices of organic produce! Always well stocked. Employees always smiling and so helpful! They are taking all the precautions for the pandemic! Also sell masks if you need one. Overall excellent shopping experience!
Decent selection and high quality products, but gets pricy pretty quickly.Excellent handling of Covid-19 protocols made it a pleasure to shop here in 2020-2021.
Great pandemic safety protocols. Limited guests allowed inside, cart wipes, the employees are masked and behind dividers, and they make soft reminder announcements to keep your distance and wear your mask. Very much appreciated. They also have delivery and pick-up services.
Friendly staff, wide variety of quality foods and produce, and convenient location and services.
Great place to come for some of the foods they offer.Would come back again
I love the fresh produce here! Good selection of bulk goods. Also, wonderful gift and household items.
If you dont look like a hippie they will follow you and keep on edge as you shop there, dont ask a question if you wear deodorant they treat you as if you are trying to steal from them. Its the worst atmosphere ever.
Does not carry hardly any vegan foods, store relies on a lot of plastic packaging from companies(are not environmentally thoughtful). These are NOT the only issues we have had with willy street North. City council and alders have all been notified of these issues. Have requested in past to please carry certain items only to be told unless more people want items then we may carry them. Poor H.R. to community. Got more items and things needed at woodmans food store on Milwaukee street....love Woodmans!! Our forever go to store! Can anybody also explain how machine to create fresh made peanut butter is any different than being allowed to grind coffee beans all during COVID-19?!Yes...machine to grind peanuts to make peanut butter was removed...yet customers were able to grind coffee as much/often as customers needed during covid. This too was another reason we are leaving coop. We have been told by woodmans...anytime we need to talk to them plz do and we will help advocate on behalf of customers to ensure they are happy and get what they NEED!Was recently told( as grocery delivery menu disappeared from coop website!)....you cant use your iPhone or Android phone to go onto coop website to have groceries now delivered to your door! A Coop member NEEDS to have a desktop computer to go ahead order groceries from coop website and have them delivered. A person we recently spoke with told us they would take information to the proper committee ...however no answer to any resolution soon. This coop should not even be where it us...does not understand how to do proper H.R. to any part of neighborhood. A person Can order HOT foods/sandwiches to be delivered.....HOWEVER...NOT every day groceries...how is this ANY DIFFERENT?!Now you see how things are run at Willy Street Coop North.
Im happy the Co-op is in my neighborhood it brings me joy to shop there
Love the Co-op, especially on the Northside. Roomier, more parking, more selection, farmers market-- and it provides healthy food options in an area where good nutrition is a challenge for some residents!
I was very disappointed . Looking for a loaf of French bread, or a baguette. Not. Looking for ain vanilla ice cream. Not. Done
If you know the co-op you know what you are getting. They are the most serious place Ive seen in tracking mask use and customer counts by far. The option for only prepackaged meat, cheese and deli is simply disappointing. Im not expecting self-serve of course, but this was a bit much. Ill go to the Willy St location from now on if I expect anything like that.
If I could leave a zero stars I would. The food is way overpriced. They pride themselves on being family friendly and organic but the staff is creepy and the people that shop there are judgemental. The staff is also completely white and rude to my ethnic boyfriend... Not a Madison vibe type of store.. Honestly dont waste your time, go to festival. And regardless of the north side willy being trash, Ive never had an issue with the Willy st location on willy st. Must be a management or ownership issue, tbh
My family and I have been members of the co-op for decades and while there have been many times where the customer service has been less than stellar, I have reached a point where I feel a review is warranted. If for nothing else, to advise others on the treatment they may (or may not) receive if faced with a potential life and death situation while shopping at this business. While taking my groceries to my car at the North side location, I noticed a man in the parking lot walking AWAY from the co-op toward Northport Drive and Walgreens. As he glanced around while walking he noticed me pushing my cart. He immediately changed directions and began walking quickly toward me. Something felt very wrong about his behavior and scared me in such a way that I turned my cart around and headed back toward the co-op. The man’s pace quickened as he pursued me. By the time I reached the doors of the store I was running and in a near panic. The man continued to pursue. He chased me all the way back into the store only stopping in the entry area. I had reached the customer service desk by then and at that point was hyperventilating. Between gasps I tried to explain what happened. I was terrified. My heart pounding so hard my chest ached. The women at the desk were most concerned about my condition and asked all the right questions to make sure an ambulance didn’t need to be called. Meanwhile the man was in the entry area flailing his arms, yelling and causing a scene. The women at the desk called the manager who came up and…went directly to tend to the man who had chased me. Eventually the manager came over to me to say that the man was gone and she would walk me to my car. She never asked or even cared how I was or what had happened to me. She said the man told her he didn’t know why I was running away and that he was only going to Subway. Nothing could be further from the truth. He was walking in the complete opposite direction and only turned around when he saw me heading away from the store. He then chased me all the way back into the store. I explained this to the manager as we left the store to which she had little response. As she walked me reluctantly to my car, I observed the man standing near Subway and then walking around the nearest building corner and out of sight. He never went to Subway nor did he have any intentions of doing so. I said to the manager that she seemed not to have any empathy or compassion for what I had just been through. In a cold, uncaring tone she replied, “That’s why I’m walking you to your car.” She didn’t care at all. That was obvious. Had the tables been turned, I would have gone to great lengths to see to the care and concern for any person who had experienced such a traumatic situation. As a woman, this was scary. I still haven’t recovered completely from it. I no longer shop that the North side location. I don’t plan on ever going back. To my fellow co-op shoppers (and anyone at all – anywhere), please be careful and most mindful of your surroundings at all times. If something doesn’t seem right, please don’t ignore your gut intuition. Your safety matters. Even if those who should genuinely care do not.
I wish I could afford to go there more often. They have been impeccable regarding covid19 prevention measures.
Always fresh especially the produce and the staff 😋 are knowledgeable and friendly.
First time shopping there but it had everything we wanted.
Its a nice store, not my favorite location, but it has a lot of good items/selection. The store is huge.
They removed hazard pay for employees (before vaccines for covid were available) and gave customers a month long free giveaway where they just gave away random items each week. They stated that the employees should be used to the pandemic and therefore the hazard pay was no longer needed.
I love the new Willy St (North). Lots of parking and same high quality and local when available goods.
Food is great. Service is the absolute worst. Period.
I love this coop location. I prefer it to the other two! I like the selection, staff are great and it is rarely as busy. I am especially happy with what the coop is doing to manage COVID spread. Limiting customers, wearing masks and keeping things clean and organized.
Stopped on our way home from Baraboo. Friendly people and great produce.
This place has the rudest staff of any of the co ops. They were rude to me and my wife who has autism because we didnt know where the line started. We genuinely could not see the line was the other side of the aisle. We had just driven 4 hours from Minneapolis rarely shop at these co ops and didnt know. The man cashier was rude and said I dont know who I should take first instead of, sir the line starts here. The staff then glared at us until we left. This coop has the rudest employees who need some basic customers service training.I love the products they have, but the staff is horrible. This is the second time they have been rude.
Excellent selection, food, wine, beer, local and organic options. Highly recommend!
Not as good as the Willy Street Co-op on Willy Street closer to downtown. Missing a lot of the bulk items and a little disorganized.
Still my favorite place to shop for groceries, with an impressive beverage department and supplement selection to boot.
Ask for Dar to help you for any bakery questions. She was incredibly nice and helpful finding gluten-free bakery items for some friends who are coming over for coffee and dont eat gluten. I didnt know where to start, but I feel confident in my selections after Dars input. They had a lot of gluten-free items, and they look really yummy!Very nice Sunday Farmers Market going out out front too.Ive shopped at their market on Williamson street often, and this was a very pleasant experience too : )
The Italian sandwich would be great if they didn’t put onion in the spread.
Yep! agree Rudest staff and VERY UNHELPFUL. My parents were members back when this place first started in 1974. I followed when I turned 18 and became a member. I am NOW regretting this and going to END my membership and request a refund. THIS place stinks.. As does the other locations. I asked them to put aside ONE thing for me, for the FIRST time ever. ONLY because I was sick and sending my 79 y/o aunt to retrieve it for me. Staff says NO they will not set it aside for 6 minutes because of Covid-19? what the heck does covid have to do with this situation? Someone is in need and does not want to send there family ( who is willing to get them something while in quarantine) on a wild goose chase. I noted they would be there in less than 6 minutes. UNACCEPTABLE WILLY STREET!! I will be asked for my membership returned to me and SPEND MY HARD EARNED MONEY ELSEWHERE!!!!! YOU STINK ROYALLY
My favorite grocery store in Madison. This location is small and its easy to find everything you need. The prices are reasonable for high quality organic products and you can expect everyone to be wearing masks and being mindful of their distance.
Im loving it
Love the North Side Coop!
Nice.
I love co-op North! Friendly and super helpful staff, great selection both of health food items but also more budget conscious standard grocery stuff but carefully chose for being sustainable, local, or from a co-op! Plentiful parking, excellent meat, cheese, seafood and produce. Cute housewares & gifts, and the new sandwich menu ROCKS! I’m not vegetarian but I love a good tofu Ruben.
Clean, professional, courteous staff. High quality products.
I think I would have given 5 stars if it wasnt for the dump make requirement and the reminder whole in the store to wear it over both your nose and mouth. Do they really still think we believe the mask benefit us in any way or are even needed!
Great addition to the co-op family. I get coffee most mornings, quick and strong. Great beer cooler and selection. I also like their hot bar, delicious sausage patties in the morning. In a pinch they have a natural/hippie gift section that is great for mothers Day and similar holidays.
I prefer the big box store selections .
Fantastic produce and delicious smoothies! You will find most everything you would find at Willy st proper. Always friendly and informed staff. So happy that this store is here!!
Found cereals here. Good stuff.
Update! We previously ordered groceries for delivery and got an email confirmation, but the groceries never arrived and we had trouble reaching them by phone to figure it out. It wasn’t a great experience, but the next day they called and helped get it sorted. We then re-ordered and our groceries were delivered on time and exactly as we had ordered them. Leslie was very helpful and communicative in preparing the order. 11/10 would order again.
This is a great grocery store with helpful employees. It is a bit pricey for some of the organic produce and fancy items, as can be expected at a co-op, but they do a good job of providing more affordable alternatives. The meat and fish selection is just big enough to almost always have what I need. And of course, plenty of good cheese options.
Amazing selection of local products and very friendly staff! I love shopping here.
Its a grocery store. Resonable beer selection.
Excellent produce and meats, super friendly staff!
It is so nice having a co-op on the north side. They have a good selection of pretty much everything you need. Their baked goods are fantastic.

Good organic produce, smiley and helpful staff, non-chemical smell store.
My first visit to the newest Willy Street co-op on the North side. The inside is modern, clean, spacious with isles laid out in specific sections. There is a hot food bar, juice bar and meat counter. Memberships give special benefits and start at a very, very low $10.00. I am a member now and dined on a great selection of foods in their dining area. Keeping in the tradition of the original store but more room and added features.
Great beer selection and lots of healthy options. I only stopped in for flowers and beer so I didnt get to see much else but Ill stop back for the beer alone. They had a few local options Ive never seen anywhere else. The store appeared to be very clean and well kept.
A somewhat different experience from shopping at the main store on Williamson Street, but all-in-all, also excellent. The extensive selection to some degree reflects the eating habits of folks in the neighborhood, and the store is wonderfully bright and clean, in stark contrast to the grocery store which had previously occupied the space. 4 stars versus 5 is, frankly, entirely because of a small percentage of people one encounters in and around the store. I have had people (customers) say inappropriate things to me that Ive never heard in 40+ years shopping on Williamson Street. The seafood folks are quite good, but make note, it is NOT the same entity as youll find on Williamson Street or in Middleton. Therefore, selection is different, and you can find things here you wont find at the other stores, for instance, monkfish, something my partner loves. The health and wellness, and liquor departments are extremely well-managed, and staffed by folks eager and able to assist members in finding what theyre looking for.
Ive always had my fill here,
Willy Street North to the rescue! Thank goodness for this store. I needed kumquats for my Christmas party. I called everywhere for these darn things and no one had them. Two days before the party, I messaged Willy Street and to my shock, they actually had them! And I was almost ready to give up hope on finding them. This place saved my Christmas. And as a bonus, I found a great place to shop for my gluten and dairy free needs. Perfect!
Love shopping local, supporting local farmers and food purveyors, and browsing kitchy gift items. Great selection for beer and wine, too.
Best place Ive found to buy CBD oil. Good locally made options. Fresh fish wasnt very good, at least when I got it.
It is so nice having a co-op on the north side. They have a good selection of pretty much everything you need. Their baked goods are fantastic.
Great groceries. I trust willy for good food and fair prices.
Decent stock of local, natural, organic products. Clean well organized store. Super friendly staff. Bulk bin selection is alone worth coming here. Prices can be higher on similar and sane items you can find at Woodmans. However, this place is ideal for supplementing local fare into your regular groceries.
All Willy Street Co-ops are the best grocery stores in the world, but this one is my favorite of the 3 that currently exist. Its big, never too crowded, and all the bulk stuff is in nice separate lines so its easy to access and no one gets in anyones way. Everyone is super friendly. Its amazing. I love shopping here.
I always love going here when Im in Madison! Im always pleased with whatever Ive purchased, and now they even sell baked goods from Lush Life Vegan Bakery!
Great place for you to get healthy foods
I love the place, but they really dont treat their employees very well. I find this very surprising for a cooperative. Theyre using a lot of unsavory corporate tactics which has me questioning my membership.
I have lived on this side of town for 25 years. The store is beautiful and pleasant to be in. I am happy its here. Its not perfect yet, and simply needs some cheap, staple items. The store here previously served those with lower income. Before when I would shop at Pierces, the customers were 75% minority, now its 90-95 % white and dressed like theyre from Maple Bluff and about to get into their 4 wheel drive and go to an Eddie Bauer shindig. But seriously, baked Chickens (not even organic for $10.99?) Pierces and Copps sold baked chickens for $6.99 and $4.99 when on sale. I know that Willy Street has high aspirations, but I think the ideals are losing the reality. You are forcing people from the immediate neighborhood (who have shopped here for 20 years) to shop elsewhere, and people who have hardly ever shopped here are happy to have an upscale store near to them. You are giving people what you think they need instead of what they need. All you need to do is give people a few more choices. Just ask the locals what they buy, and then stock it at a competitive price. You seem resistant to that and I dont know why?
Love how helpful everyone is.
Pricey, but fabulous
Im so happy this is in my neighborhood! I no longer have to travel to Middleton or Willy St to shop. The people are always really helpful! Such a wonderful addition to the North Side!
We live in walking distance to Willy Street North and it is a blessing to have nearby. I am looking forward to the juice and sandwich bar opening soon for more options for a quick weekend lunch. We love to walk over after going to the farmers market held in the parking lot outside in the warmer months. They are doing a lot of outreach to community leaders and are trying to make their high quality products accessible to lower incomes, in addition to stocking some more conventional products (campbells soup, soda, frozen pizzas). I know this may offend some traditional co-op shoppers, but I am grateful they are doing their best to serve the community with what they want and (more importantly) need.I am always glad to see a full parking lot and lines at the registers. I am hopeful that the north location is here to stay!
I like the variety of chemical free food. Not in Madison often, so not a co-op member. Prices appeared to be better for members
A good selection of food & other products with average costs & friendly service. It is clean and well stocked.
The employees are friendly and the store has just enough choices (not overwhelming like the big stores). It is clean and well lit and the aisles are nice and wide. Good selection of local products. And you can give back to the community shopping there. Best hot and cold bar around!
Well laid out store has everything you need and more the staff are so happy and friendly a really nice atmosphere. Yes we found the type of farmers cheese that we were looking for plus we spent another $90 dollars on other foods. We will certainly return next time that we are back in Madison
Willys is always fantastic. They have a variety of amazing food for all diets. Its fun just to go in and explore all the delicious things you didnt know you wanted. Im thrilled that they are right down the road from work now!
I go to Madison once or twice a year to see family. Of course I go to this co-op when I am there. I have been lucky growing up, there were always co-op stores in Hyde park in Chicago and in Berkeley when I was visiting and when we were grad students there. Alas, these are gone. But there is now a co-op in New Orleans, near my daughters HOME! YAY! AT WILLY STREET I ALWAYS PICK UP SOME WILD RICE, GROWN IN WI.
They have different options of foods you cant find at your local grocery store. Definitely make a stop in here to check it out. They have different rice and different flours to choose from in bulk. Candy choices and yummy organic coffee.
Love the product selection, and the bargains. Love the fireplace and the communal seating area. So cozy. Also, staff were really friendly too.
Love the coop! A great place to get nutritious things that I cant get normally at big scale grocery stores. As a person who tries to eat locally grown and plant based foods, it can be hard but the Willy Street Coop has several locations which helps makes that possible. However because it is local and hard to obtain the price can be high especially for me as a college student. However I try to support local businesses whenever I can and have the money to do so.
I am so glad to have the coop on the north side of Madison! It is so wonderful to be able to go to the store to get specialized ingredients without having to drive 20 minutes. I love the bulk foods and spices section, as well as the produce. I wish that there were better prices and more variety for meat, but I understand that the values of the coop are reflected in this department.
I love the covenience of Willy St North. I got help with a couple of health product questions, found some great bargains in the slightly old vegetable bins and shared some information on a nutraceutical that I have recently added to me routine.Willy St is a cooperative for everyone, not just the rich and famous. I encourage people to try it out. There are many pricing options and great deals especially for members. There is help for those on limited resources for memberships or you can volunteer hours in exchange. As a member you can help set policies and anyone can suggest products they would like see in the store.
Love Willy, people who dont understand co-ops should look here to see what successful cooperative businesses can be.
