Madison is loaded with Asian markets, but Oriental Shop caters to the Japanese market. The couple there are quite kind, and they are honest and truly care about you and making sure their goods are top quality. I trust them so much I only buy my seafood for sushi and sashimi from them. Here I made a chirashi bowl with just some of the seafood they had to offer. I even bought a ramen style bowl from them. She buys fish larger, to cut down on costs. She then cuts them in smaller sections and those savings are in sure given to you. If you want something special, you can ask her to order it for you sometimes.Every time I go I am surprised by something new they will have, and know she will know about the products they sell. This is really my most favorite shop in Madison. I would give it 10 stars if I could.
I love this Japanese food store. Our family has been shopping here for over 40 years. This family owned business packs a lot of variety: frozen and fresh fish, produce, Japanese snacks, cooking needs, a variety of rice, Japanese dishes, cookware, and Zoshirishi rice makers too! The owners are always so friendly and helpful.
This place is fantastic. Ive been going there for about 20 years now. They are super helpful and the store has a lot of great things if you are into Japanese food. Ive gotten so many great things here over the years for quick food to make and snacks, to ingredients for recipes. The soy sauce is great, cold coffee drinks, mochi, rice, soba noodles, cherry blossom tea (seasonally), udon noodles, fresh mushrooms, veggies, soft tofu, matcha powder, umeboshi, frozen fish cakes, etc.
One of my favorite places! The owners are so sweet and have great products.
Still Madisons best option for Japanese groceries! You can even buy some specialized Japanese cookware here (nabe, tamago yaki pans, ect.).
This place is really cool. They sell all kind of products from sweets to Ramen and vegetables. The owners are very helpful and nice
Fun place to shop for authentic Japanese goodies. Dont forget to take CASH (they dont take cards). :)
Great selection and super friendly staff. The lady at the register was more than happy to answer any and all our questions when my boyfriend and I set out to make some homemade sushi. They have all types of merchandise from candy to sushi-grade fish to bowls and tea pots. They also have a great selection of ramen. This store has everything I was looking for and much more!
This is one of my favorite places to shop! Great selection of Japanese grocery items you cant find at other locations in Madison. Cash or check only.
The only purely Japanese grocery in Madison. Very small but well stocked with lots of products. If you cant find what youre looking for, the owner can usually special order it for you.Wonderful proprietors. Always happy and helpful.*Cash or check only
Excellent store. Owners are both wonderful.
Love this place! It is so cozy and people are so kind!
The best place to go if you are looking to make Japanese dishes at home. The lady that runs is very nice is very helpful if you dont know how to prepare a dish. I really recommend this market to anyone who wants to learn how to cook Japanese dishes.
Here youll find all the essentials and more to prepare an authentic Japanese meal, great store! Also, try the fresh Japanese bread that arrives every Friday around noon. いただきます!
Love this place. Well maintained Mom and Pop shop. Both are very friendly and are always willing to help you out and give out expert advice. Just remember they are cash only!
Best place to shop at when it comes to japanese groceries. It isnt a huge shop but they have things that tend to be difficult to find in other Asian shops. Prices are also good.
This is a much beloved mom and pop Japanese store. Tamaki has always taken good care of us and has an amazing wealth of items available. From rice to bakery, from frozen sushi makings to pottery, they have a bit of everything... They dont accept credit cards, cash and checks only...
Wonderful hidden gem of a store. The shop owners are super friendly and so willing to help you learn how to cook Japanese food. Fresh sushi grade fish every other week can be ordered to the amount you want. Bring cash or a checkbook, they do not take credit or debit cards. They have a great selection of dry goods, too, and such unique items Ive never seen before. They also have a lovely collection of pottery/dishes for sale.
If youre looking to stock your pantry with some Japanese staples this place is excellent. Small but well stocked and very clean. The person behind the counter was quick to help me find what I needed. Keep in mind its cash/check only. Highly recommended.
This place is great! The owners are super friendly and will explain to you anything you need to know about preparing and cooking Japanese cuisine. The farm raised fish arrives fresh every other weekend and on the off weekend you can get it frozen.Bring your cash, because they do not accept credit cards.
Wonderful little grocer with predominantly Japanese goods. They are the place to get sushi grade fish for making your own sushi.Go here and buy everything. Its wonderful.
Great grocery store.
I love fresh seafood but live in an area where it is nearly impossible to find fresh fish. It find very difficult to find QUALITY non farmed Salmon. 3 hours drive to Madison to this market was worth it. I bought their frozen Salmon and Tuna as well as their frozen mackerel (to grill it) . Excellent Quality and taste. If you want quality, highly recommend it.
A cute little mom and pop store. The selections are not great but the owners are so nice and make you feel like you step inside their home. They have Japanese dango balls there and have sushi grade salmon. Cash or check only store so be prepared.
I recently went to three other Asian shops/markets in the area, and I can say that I had the most success in finding what I was looking for, as well as had the best time when shopping here. I must say, Im biased, in that I was mostly looking for Japanese products, but nevertheless this store left me with a lasting positive impression. The store-co owner who was working at the time was very nice, and was still nice after I asked to buy a loaf of bread after checking out - oops! I forgot. The look and feel of the store is really cute and nice, being that its so jam packed and well-decorated. You really get the feeling that everything was selected with care. I will certainly be coming back!
Ive been driving past the Oriental Shop my entire life and stopped in with my husband when we were walking to a neighboring restaurant. This small and locally-owned shop is a GEM. So many items packed on the shelves. Great selection
Small, cozy shop with a somewhat limited selection. If theres an item you really want you can ask and theyll order it for you. I wanted my favorite brand of natto, and they got it for me!
Best flesh products and veggies fruits too
I got real good rice there! Owner is very nice too! Cash only, so be prepared.
Has all our favorite Japanese groceries. They even get fresh fish for sushi every other weekend. The owners are very friendly.
If you want a great variety on authentic Japanese snacks and crusine, plus some cool non-edible imports, stop here. The shop owner is very nice and very helpful, happy to share her knowledge with you. Only cash or checks though!
Fantastic! Competitive prices and amazing range of products all in sweet small shop! Dont be shy in asking for help!--owners are extremely helpful, kind, and informative. Cash/check only as noted by other reviews.
This is an absolutely lovely shop. Its a little on the small side, but the shop owner is absolutely lovely. She could tell what I was making just from what I was buying and gave me some suggestions. My zaru soba turned out fantastically. I will definitely be stopping in again. The only down side is they dont take cards, but I just have to make sure Im prepared before I head over.
Very cute little store store with reasonable prices. The staff has always been very friendly. Make sure to bring cash.
Great place! Folks were super helpful and taught me how to make ramen 🍜Thank you!
Great service, great prices, great selection. I highly recommend.
The owners are so nice! We went to buy sweet bean paste.
If you are looking for Japanese stuff, go here.
Such friendly people, and they had exactly what I needed. Cash only but worth it!
Very friendly store manager. Despite the odd, generic store name it is a genuine Japanese grocery store with all the goods, even a bit of produce, like Daikon and Nasu (eggplant). Not bad for a store thats about 200 sq feet.
Love this little store! Authentic japanese food and the staff is always super helpful and friendly!
Good store but some staples are not there. I was looking for takoyaki sauce. Small variety of ramen. Please install POS for credit cards.
Fantastic shop for all your Japanese cuisine needs. Even hard to find Japanese ingredients like tenkasu. This tiny shop packs so much into its walls its hard to believe. Weekly deliveries of fresh meat, fish and breads mean screwing is top notch, and the owners after friendly, knowledgeable, and go out of the way to help. The only downside is check or cash only, no card. But that wont keep me from returning again and again (especially for the lovely cherry blossom red bean bao, and the huge bags of Japanese Kit Kats).
I love shopping there. They are very helpful
Very helpful owner. Cozy shop.
Best little hidden gem full of Japanese goodies! Only Japanese-specific market in the area. LOVE IT!
Nice couple who own shop. Have Japanese food that most Asian food stores dont.
I love this store.
Love it, small detailed service with knowledgeable staff. Closed on Tuesdays. Cash Only.
It is like a Japanese general store. Their fresh sushi/sashimi grade fish delivered every other Saturday are wonderful. I once saw a local sushi chef going there to get some fish. The fresh fish usually arrives around 3pm. Call first to find out whether its the week. If not, they also keep some popular ones frozen. They also sell Japanese candies, miso, pickled vegetables, nori, canned food, and fresh pastry. The owners often kindly remind the customers to bring a cooler or insulation bag to keep the fish fresh on your way home.
Small but very helpful and great selection!
Tiny, but well organized with a good selection.
My go-to Japanese market. Great selection! :)
Fantastic selection of Japanese ingredients and snacks
A great and kind small Japanese store. (But, only cash or check were accepted.)
Looks nice. No credit cards accepted.
They always have the Japanese ingredients that you need.
Friendly staff, great selection, and cute too!
They have good sashimi.
Excellent variety at low prices.
Small but well stocked.
Super cute tiny store
Wont find a better place for Japanese goods unless you are up for a drive all the way to Mitsuwa in Arlington Heights
Very friendly and helpful.
