The best. Got me a CTY bike from here. Love what the CoOp stands for. And they adjusted the reach on the bike and tuned me up quickly the next day without having to make an appointment. I really felt like a priority as a customer here. Special thanks to Kate for info on the membership and extra special shout-out to Sara for the attention to detail on my bike adjustments

Have been SO pleased with this store, from customer service and product selection to how they handled the many challenges that came with COVID. Staff are consistently friendly and helpful; dont think Ive gone in here once without at least two staff members checking in. (Nice and low pressure, too. Doesnt feel intrusive at all.) Always clean. Many staff members with great knowledge of appropriate gear, how to fit boots/packs/etc. Thank you!!!

I dont have a great concept of why everyone else rates REI so well. All of the goods here are jacked up in price by at least three times and you can find cheaper, better quality models of most equipment online. Now the clothes that least are of a superior quality, but dont go here if youre looking to pick up a couple extra things on the cheap, because you wont find it even with a sale. I can also admit that if youre into biking there store is almost par none in the industry outside of specialty shops. The employees are trained in the style of constant bothering that no one really favors and retailers keep on preaching anyway. They probably sell more if they let people peruse in peace and made them self available when needed. Barnes & Noble has a good model. REI has a bad one. I usually try to find the positive and everything, but really the most I can say here is that if youre an REI fan with disposable income it probably wouldnt matter to you too much how much they jack up prices. Not only that but theres a certain subset of fitness oriented outdoorsy types that it just speaks to. For me and my money? Someplace online.

I didnt intend to write a review but my experience at the store has been bothering me for the last few days. I went to the store a few days ago with my children to buy a new coat. Id gotten my current coat from them about a decade ago and was in need of a replacement. I was very dissatisfied with their selection of womens coats! I camp pretty much fulltime and spend most of my active hours outside and with my kids. I needed something that could hold up to hiking, fire starting, whatever I needed it to do outdoors and I just wasnt finding that in the womens section so I made my way over to the mens. While I was looking at coats in the mens section, an employee approached me and said, You do know this is the mens section, right? I was really upset by this comment. Not necessarily for me since I am a woman and I identify as such but what if that wasnt the case? She could have simply asked if I needed help and left it at that. I was so flustered that I almost went back to the womens coats and picked one that didnt suit my needs but thought better of it. I did end up picking out a mens coat that fit me in both form and function. Regrettably, I had to ask the same employee for help to unlock the coat from the rack. She made a big show of asking me to walk six feet away, which was fine except that it was a huge production that it didnt need to be. She could have simply told me to leave the coat there for a moment and step back but she told me I cant help you unless you back six feet away! Yes, it deserved an exclamation point. Then she aggressively unlocked the coat and then told me, This isnt as easy as just unlocking it. Even though Id been waiting patiently and had made no effort to rush her. In fact, Id just been chatting with my kids while she unfastened it from the rack. All in all it was a very upsetting encounter. The fellow at check out was much, much nicer and helped me get a pair of gloves from the garage sale for cheaper than the pair I was buying. Still, I dont think I will be back to this REI if I ever even go back to an REI again.

I have received nothing less than stellar customer service at REI Durham. My bike came with a set of tires that were different from what was in the description. Jason, the bike tech, promptly ordered a new set of tires(the original ones were not available, so he ordered something close) and fitted them. Unfortunately, I did not like the new ones, but Jason was happy to swap them with the old ones at no extra charge. He went above and beyond to keep his customer satisfied. All the other employees are friendly and responsive as well. I am also impressed that they take covid precautions seriously.

Good products; I’m starting to question the service.I like REI products. Their house brands, especially when on sale, are well priced and functional. But the service is really hit or miss of late.Recently, a person in adventure sports tried to sell me a bike rack that was not the one I picked out; then, he walked away and told another person at checkout (who wasn’t in adventure sports) to help me. We had to get the manager to help because the checker didn’t know what I needed and he disappeared. I ended up buying a rack on Amazon. Good choice, too.Next, the bike shop fixed a tire for me after I hit a pot hole and had a blowout. The brand new tube on a new wheel then blew out while on my bike rack 3 days later, while inflated well within spec pressures (50-55 psi, max 65 psi). Then, it blew out again a day later on a ride. Had to hike a bike for 3 km. So, I took the tire and wheel back for repair. Today, when picking up the wheel, I got condescended to by a guy when I asked why my new wheel has detonated two inner tubes in one week. His response: “Maybe you exceed a weight limit?” Really? The weight limit according to the bike specs is 300lbs. I’m 225. Seriously, not a good response.I know it’s a pandemic. I know adventure sports are busy. I know the bike shop is crazy busy right now with the Covid run on bicycles. But just be consistent and kind.I’m absolutely open to changing my mind. But right now, I’m kinda down on REI and will be more tempted to take my business to local retailers.

Never in my entire life have a written a negative review for a company. Ive been shopping at this REI for the past 5+ years, and before yesterday, I had had nothing but great experiences here. All of this revolves around a gentleman that was working in the bike shop that was helping me. I forget his name, but he was middle aged (probably late 40s to 50s) and had a gray goatee/beard. I noticed this when he pulled his mask down to talk to me. I believe he may have been the manager at the time since he mentioned they recently had to bring two more employees on board because of how busy they were.I brought my bike in to get a few things fixed. I had already taken it to another local bike store so knew what needed to be done, but decided to take it to REI since I am a member. I asked to get these things done but was basically bullied into getting a full tune up. I asked if we could just start with fixing the things I wanted to fix and seeing how it was working after that and if the tuneup was still needed afterwards then Id do it then. And then he said, “In that case you may as well just take your bike home and do nothing since that’s not gonna fix your problem”. It was extremely rude, and he didnt even consider what I was asking. I simply felt like I was bullied into buying it.After I dropped off my bike, I was going to get a lightweight sleeping bag liner and an employee told me that as a member if I spend over $100 then I get $20 back as a thank you for shopping. He didnt know if services counted towards the $100, but urged me to go ask the bike shop to see.I go back over and speak to the same gentleman to ask, and he goes “Nah we can’t do that we don’t even know what you need yet”. And I say that I know I’m at least paying for a tune up which is $90, so can I just pay for that part? And he goes “I know you’re trying to pinch everything little thing out of this you can but the system doesn’t work like that.If he couldn’t do anything about it, that’s one thing. But this gentleman was super condescending throughout our entire communication. He also kept calling me amigo. Everything about our interaction rubbed me the wrong way.

I found a great product and generally like how REÍ thinks about business. However I was misgendered several times by two different employees. Once employee condescendingly told me where the women’s section was as I was asking a question about the jacket I liked and intended to buy—a men’s jacket. At checkout, I was referred to as “she” too many times to count as my parter was asked repeatedly if she was sure she wanted to link her purchase w my REI coop account. I want to continue supporting this company but need them to train customer service reps not to assume peoples genders and to know trans people exist and know what clothes they prefer.

Because I was going to be in Durham for an appointment, I decided to take the boots back to the Durham REI store (not where Id originally purchased them). They took them back, no questions asked. Over the year weve dropped a lot of cash at REI. And we keep coming back. Why is that? Service. A lot of stores sell outdoor shoes, for example. We go to REI because at REI we can get the guidance we need to choose the right shoe (and the left shoe!) for the adventures ahead, and the expertise to make sure they fit properly. And they stand behind their products. My son travels and hikes a lot. He basically walked the soles off a pair of boots and went in to REI to replace them. He mentioned to the sales person how long it took him to kill the boots. REI decided that the boots had died too young and replaced them for free. We didnt expect that.High tech gear, old school service. It works for me.
