They had a good inventory and Phil was very helpful in helping me find a bike to suite my needs in my price range! He spent a lot of time with me explaining the pros and cons of the bikes in my sizes. I also needed multiple accessories (helmet, locks, water bottle holders) and he helped me pick them out.

My wife and I are biking novices, but thanks to Durham Cycles, our love for bicycling has grown in the 6 years we have spent in Durham. We bought out first nice bikes from Durham Cycle a few years ago and the bikes have been nothing short of a joy in our lives. Then recently, my wife became unable to bike uphill due to knee pain, so we reached out to Durham Cycle to find an e-bike. Within minutes, David from Durham Cycles found a model that was perfect her. David and his team have been incredible: honest, endlessly knowledgable, and always helpful. Thanks David and team! Your passion and professionalism have brightened our lives.

My husband and I went here to hopefully find a balance bike that was the appropriate size for our son. The one we got him for his birthday was too large and we felt pretty deflated as parents after we saw his excitement and then he couldnt ride it. We were unfortunately not able to find a balance bike for him BUT the kindness of the staff, knowledge shared, and patience in trying to help us on our quest was much appreciated. We wont hesitate to come here with our future biking needs as a family!

While visiting Durham, I was about to start a ride with my wife on the ATT. When I took my bike off our car, however, my front wheel was flat. At my urging, my wife started out. I found Durham Cycles about two miles away on Google, put my bike back on the car and headed over. They fixed my bike in a jiffy at a fair price. I was able to drive back to the trail head, get on my bike and ride to meet my wife about 8 miles down the trail. We continued our ride and then rode back together. Thanks Durham Cycle. You made our day.

Durham Cycles is the best bicycle shop Ive seen in my 15 years of cycling.Durham Cycles has a welcoming crew that is devoted to enabling me to ride in the way I want to ride. I purchased a bicycle from them about two years ago and Ive been steadily improving and upgrading the bicycle. The folks at Durham Cycles were available and helpful talking through my options during each improvement and took my priorities into consideration. Recently I installed a dynamo hub to power a battery and headlight. Durham Cycles spent hours with me to find the right parts and teach me how to install the new parts.

Newest update:I really appreciate the owner reaching out to me about my experience. I havent had this happen very often (I dont leave many bad reviews). He gave me a call and apologized about the sub-service. With living in a digital world, it was nice to speak with someone over the phone instead of just through email. Thank you for following up.Updated review:So after getting my tire fixed, I went out on my first ride. Thankfully I only went a couple of miles, because my tire blew again. I had to walk my bike a couple of miles home. Only to find out that they had put the wrong tube on my bike knowingly, but never shared with me about it. Felt like I was lied to by the shop. I don’t plan on ever using their service again! There’s another bike shop in town. First time things go wrong and I get fooled, shame on you. Second time, shame on me.

Ignorant of all things cycling, I had a fabulous shopping experience as a first time - in a long time - bike owner. I purchased a few must have items with the selfless help of Brandon. He provided a lot of entry level guidance with what I needed to know and answered all of my questions without hesitation. When I arrived home, I took my dog out for a moonlight ride around our neighborhood and she loved it (after weary hesitation and 30 seconds of vocal protesting)! I had an amazing experience at Durham Cycles and would recommend it to anyone with any type of cycling need. I went in and got a bike fit with the intention of buying a new bike. I met with Dave and had the most fun I have had making a purchase. He took me though the fit and explained everything that he was doing to help me understand the process in case I needed to make small tweaks on my own later on.After the fit was done we sat at the computer and he walked me through multiple brands of bikes to help me find the stock geometry that would fit me best. He didnt push me to any particular brand (which was really nice) and he actually steered me away from certain brands because they would not meet my fit needs. It was so refreshing to work with someone who was honest and just wanted to help without pushing something on me whether it be a specific brand or a higher priced bike so they could make more money. After spending some time with Dave and talking about what I was looking for we found a bike that fit great, was well under the price point that we had discussed, and met all of my needs. I was able to use the leftover money to purchase some shoes, pedals, helmet, and aerobars all of which were being sold in the store (at a competitive price when I compared to others online). They had my bike in stock but took a few days to assemble it and attach all the things I had purchased. Dave also setup the clips on my shoes to make sure they were the right fit for me (he ended up having to add a shim in to get them just right).Dave (the store owner) was a friendly, professional who was genuinely concerned about his customers. His staff were also really cool (I spent a few minutes chatting with them before the fit got started). My only regret is that I wish I lived closer so that I could go there for my bike maintenance and gear purchases.

They presented me with a couple of upgrade options including one that was less than $10. The staff then went on to install the new pedals, recycle the old pedals, and straighten out the handlebars which had been bent in a crash. You should have seen my daughters face when we walked out. Fantastic shop, excellent and complete service, incredibly welcoming and knowledgeable. By far, the best shop for renting, asking questions, receiving service, and/or buying equipment.Durham Cycles have met and serviced every need I have had during the past few years and done so with incredible quality. Often times, there are small details some shops forgo and rather skip servicing (ie some forget ferrules on cables, aligning tires with valve stems, or maintaining the personal feel of brake pull and cables.) Small, minute adjustments which take time but also make a huge difference) and the end result is having to fix or adjust these things on my own when I get home or make another trip back to the shop for them to fix it. Durham Cycles goes out of their way to make sure your bike is safe, reliable, and functions in the best way possible. The owner and mechanics do so with the utmost respect and make sure to notify you of any changes or suggestions they have and ask prior to performing the service. You walk out of the shop confident and more knowledgeable than before.I stand by their service and community. If I have any questions or needs about bikes, cycling, and or the cycling community, I know DC will be able to help. It’ll be hard to go back to another shop anywhere else I move without comparing them to DC.

This shop has bikes, parts and gear. If you need those things, they are fine. I would not take my bike here for any maintenance or repairs. Ive ridden for years and do most of my maintenance myself. In the past week, two friends have told me stories that blow my mind.1) A friend asked if he could make his bike roll a little faster. I suggested that the first thing he could do is buy new tires. He was riding on 700x35s with heavy tread that were rated at 65psi. When he went to the shop and asked for tires that would make his bike faster, the salesperson told him the best way to get faster is to train more. I went with my friend to bullseye cycles and we bought different tires.2) Another friend got a flat tire. She was quoted $20, and also told that the work would be hard because she has fenders. Both of these answers indicate either a disdain for customers or ignorant sales reps. And telling someone a lie like fenders make it harder to fix flats either means their mechanics just bought their first multi tool last week or theyre trying to convince customers that the easiest tasks on bikes are challenging, so why not just let the shop do it.Ive never gotten a good feeling from this shop. I would not recommend going here for honest assessments of your bike or the labor it would need.

Great experience buying new bike for a family member. I have not purchased a new bike in years, certainly not one from a bike shop rather than a less expensive model from a big box store. I chose Durham Cycles based on excellent reviews and convenient location. Although I had read online about different bike styles and accessories and how to choose the right size, I opted for personal service from knowledgeable, helpful individuals in thinking about keeping this one for the long-term and preserving our joints. And, thats what we got. There were plenty of models to view and test and at reasonable prices for quality (which, besides good advice and service, is what you get at a bike shop, not necessarily at a big box store). All the staff were friendly and helpful, especially Domenick, who was very patient in working with us to choose the best model and size for our needs and even explaining the physics of gearing to help with understanding shifting. There was no rush or pressure and he stayed late both times to accommodate our schedule. Choosing involved taking several bikes for a spin on two occasions and having Domenick adjust components for a good ride and even assemble a new bike for the best fit. Upon purchase, the bike leaves the store tuned up with encouragement to return in a month for a followup tuneup (or sooner if need be). All in all, we are looking forward to many days and years riding this bike and I am looking forward to returning to get one for myself. Thank you Durham Cycles and all you folks who directed us there with your reviews.

He patiently explained what he was doing and answered my questions. He also was (and has been historically) very thoughtful about my financial situation, and made minor changes that were within my budget and would help me feel MUCH better on my bike. As a result of this bike fit, I have NO more pain on the bike, and I have much more power! These guys are superb mechanics, very friendly, and perhaps most importantly adamant and vocal supporters of the cycling and bike safety community. Plus there are some pretty hot bikes in there. A must for all velophiles in Durham.

Great service, stand up guys, and a well stocked shop. Their space isnt huge, but if they dont have something in stock, theyll get it usually next day. Ive been riding and racing for many years, and this shop is as good as it gets. I usually wrench my own bikes, but lately Ive been dropping off my rigs here because these guys truly do top notch work at some of the best prices in town. Bottom line: Dave, Geoff and Scotty love bikes, and if you love bikes, you should know this shop.

The staff at Durham Cycles is friendly, caring, and dedicated to our mutual obsession with cycling of all kinds. My bike would be dysfunctional and I certainly would not have enjoyed riding it if it werent for the hard work of the people at this shop. Spend your money at this local institution - youll get every pennys worth.

Ive had nothing but good experiences here. David, Geoff and Scotty are all so knowledgeable and honest about bikes and what you need and what you dont. Too many times places will talk you into unnecessary parts or even a bike thats beyond your ability. Durham Cycles is the only kind of shop Id want to trust with my business.

Very open about what work was needed, what was optional, and how much it would cost up front. That being said, I had them do a full tune up on a couple of bikes and it cost me about $125 apiece. I dont know much about bikes and bike repair, but that seemed steep. Both bikes needed things like new brake pads, tightening all around, adjusting gear lines, oiling etc. One also had a messed up gear arm (I forget the name - actuator maybe?) and that cost about $35 in parts and perhaps $30 in labor extra.

I had a great experience at Durham Cycles recently when I went in to purchase cycling shoes for indoor cycling.I was slightly intimidated to go in because I do indoor cycling and Im not a die hard cyclist, but the gentleman who helped me(maybe the owner?) was very helpful, knowledgeable and patient. He answered all my questions and made great suggestions. I wound up purchasing a pair of cycling shoes for less $ than I was expecting to spend that he then fit and placed my cleats for. His knowledge and expertise really created a top notch experience. I really felt that the guidance and suggestions I got were in my best interest as a customer. I would definitely recommend this business to others!

I rejoiced the day Durham Cycles moved in because we really needed a full-service bike shop in our area. And I was even happier when I discovered what a great shop it is. As someone who cares much more about riding than I do about bike parts or repairs, I sometimes find shops intimidating when I need new equipment or repairs. Not so here. Geoff and Dave are helpful, respectful and extremely pleasant to work with. They also go the extra mile to get just the right parts and they price very fairly. They even replaced a tire I was unhappy with, though it was no fault of theirs. I often sing their praises to others in the area -- now Im telling the world!

I bought my bike in Chapel Hill in 2007, and at other stores had very corporate, mediocre service. When Durham Cycles opened, I began taking my bike there, and Ive never looked back. The staff has the customers interests at heart and openly discusses what you need and how much it costs up front. They have done both minor and major repairs for me (from tune-ups, to replacing my helmet and all the cables after an accident). Theyre also good about getting in touch with time estimates and letting me know as soon as my bike is ready for pickup. Dave, the owner, is great at explaining things and answering questions - Im not a bike expert by any means, and I never feel like hes talking down to me. I trust his judgment completely. In short, if youre in the Triangle and need anything bike-related, dont hesitate to stop by Durham Cycles!
