Monday evening it was packed.... For good reason. Im not really a huge ice cream fan.... I got the mocha chip, my other half got the chocolate and vanilla, it was amazing! We normally go down to Jenis but tonight we tried Republic Ice Cream. Both are worth the parking downtown on King Street! We will be back!
Wow, I had the best vanilla chocolate chip ice cream Ive ever had at Republic Ice Cream! The chips were the perfect flavor and there was a lot of them. The vanilla ice cream was smooth and creamy with a great texture, truly the best Ive had! My wife had vanilla and chocolate soft serve and she said it was incredible! They are on the expensive side but so worth it, simply amazing!
Five stars only for the employees. They do they job and work fast and efficiently. One day I walked in and the manager I assume is harshly disciplining one of the workers who I see every time I go in. I talked to the employee and she stated that she was yelled at for a small occurrence out of her hands, the employee was in tears when she served me. She also said that this behavior from their manager was common and that many past employees had quit because of it. The establishment itself is phenomenal, the workers and the food. But the abuse of the employees needs to stop.
$23 for flavorless ice cream that was somehow frozen but warm at the same time. There was a line at the other ice cream place down the line and this place was empty. Now we know why.
Terrible! The ice cream was melting in the case and it wasn’t very good. My son ordered a milkshake for $9.99, the only size they had and it was soft serve ice cream with milk poured into it. The girls working there were more interested in talking then they were working. 4 people cost $34. It wouldn’t have been so bad if the ice cream was good and the service was better. Oh, the parking is horrible. I’d suggest going somewhere else. Very disappointing experience!
Nothing better than a chocolate hot fudge sundae on a warm day!
Arrived for ice cream at 930 close time of shop listed as 10pm. $40 in mediocre ice cream and were told by staff at 945 that we couldnt stay to eat our ice cream. Poor customer service to say the least. We own a food service business so are very familiar with the industry and we get it when its closing time but still serve and appreciate our customers no matter the time.
Ice cream is super creamy and delicious! Only 2 working and seemed to be a bit overwhelmed. (I wondered if one was being trained by the other.) If busy, just be patient.
Great tasting ice cream but a little pricey. Good customer service too
While visiting a friend in Charleston we went here and got Milkshakes. It was very tasty and I liked that the Ice Cream was from a local company.
Great place! The person who worked there was really nice and their strawberry shortcake milkshake is good! Its a little pricey though.
Worst ice cream experience ever. We had 2 milkshakes and 2 small waffle cones for 38 bucks. Plus the ice cream was soft and melting right away. And for a 10 dollar shake you would expect a full cup 🥤 but I guess I was wrong.
Hard ice cream was just ok, not a lot of flavor. Two girls working, no one else was inside and both tables were filthy.
Ok milkshake but the prices (of everything) are insane. And they also randomly charged me an extra 5.55 for an insulated cup even tho it was just a ordinary plastic cup.... They had already moved on to the next person by that point so I didnt even argue but it always leaves a bad taste in my mouth when I cant trust the prices listed on the menu. Maybe it has potential but I wont be returning.
Excellent ice cream, however, it is pretty pricey.
Was in the mood for some ice cream and since I ran the Charleston Marathon I decided to have a cheat day here. Not sure what the fuss is about because the ice cream was great! I do wish they had more flavors but they have enough to satisfy the real ice cream lovers. If youre on King St. skip that hipster ice cream shop called Jenis and go here. No funky off the wall flavors here just good creamy custard ice cream 👍
Hands down best ice cream 🍦🍦🍦🍦🍦 around. Very rich flavor, and satisfying.
My wife liked the texture of her soft serve. My ice cream was hard and not that great. Also the little popsicle stick spoons we got were just weird. We’d recommend just going with a plastic option. And last, we were in line for >25 minutes because they only had one person working on a Friday night. Literally saw and heard dozens of people who were going to drop in and order turn around and go somewhere else. Want to double your sales and improve customer satisfaction on the weekends? Get a second associate in there and pump the orders out.
Way overpriced. Paid $11 for a sundae that had gritty hot fudge. Definitely nothing special.
Great but kind of expensive
Ice cream and service very good
A very nice stop on the street to make. The ice cream had the best texture. Very yummy !
Custom milk shakes are fantastic
The ice cream was amazing the staff was super friendly!
The owner needs to check themselves honestly the prices do not make up for what you get lol dairy queen is 10x better and 10x cheaper
Ordinary ice cream, extraordinary prices.
I had the coffee ice cream and it was AWESOME. It was so rich and creamy. The best I have ever had.
We usually get the cupcake milkshakes at Cupcake Down South but they stopped doing them! We stumbled over next door and were very pleased with our cookie milkshake. I believe it had coffee, butter pecans, and something else. It was phenomenal. We’ll just start coming here now!
Best ice cream ever.Pricy but so delicious!
Wow, the ice cream was soooo creamy, almost like custard or the kind they make with liquid nitrogen. I had a double chocolate cone and my fiancé (who didn’t want any ice cream prior) nearly ate the whole thing...
What a disappointment, the ice cream was not good and I ended up paying $16.00 for a sunday. Will never waste my money there again.
The young man working did phenomenal given the circumstances. He should’ve had help. My 5 star review is solely based on his capability to stay professional and efficient.
We stopped in to try out Republic’s ice cream and weren’t disappointed! The double scoop of vanilla with chocolate chips and coffee was supposed to be for me, but, it was so exceptional, my husband had to have his share. The young man working there was similarly exceptional!
The large was too large for anyone. Do not attempt.
Jenis is better
Let’s be real here. Ice cream is too expensive for such a mediocre level. The employees were great but the management was a huge disappointment there they seemed more or less full of themselves which I did not appreciate. All in all not a great experience
I think it is a little on the expensive side but it is very good I would recommend there cookies and cream
It was empty when we got there on a Sunday afternoon so I wasnt expecting much. My husband got the vanilla custard and said he loved it. I got the strawberry shortcake milkshake and it was AWESOME. Honestly the best shake Ive ever had. The 2 people on staff were very kind and friendly with us. It was a really cute interior and a nice place for a sweet snack to escape the afternoon heat for a bit. Im honestly surprised that it wasnt packed in there because well definitely be going back before we leave the area
Ice cream was absolutely fine but nothing special. Tourist trap prices.$9.15 for a two scoop sundae...
They fire people without reason and they are highly overpriced.
Vanilla was pretty good. It wasnt the best I have ever eaten, but it was really good.
Stopped in because we LOVE soft custard and cant get it where we live. The staff were so friendly and sweet to my kids. Adorable little shop and yummy custard! The kids enjoyed the orange dream and vanilla swirl.
Always good
The ice cream was actually pretty good and the service was okay... Until we needed to wash the sticky hands and children. Why on Earth would an ice cream place have the sink and, by extension, restroom behind coded lock for employees only!? Ice cream. In the South. During summer. It melts.I get the lock on the restroom but I dont get the refusal to allow paying customers to use it to clean up the very product they bought in that very establishment. We sat there with children covered in a sticky mess and we were told yeah we have a bathroom (pointed at it) but its only for us. And then referred us to a different private business across the street. Thats just rude to both the other business and customers.Eff off, republic. Thats just insulting.
Pricey, but sooooo good!
Good ice cream.
Ive only been here once, but Im now a fan and cant wait to come back again. We stopped here on the way to dinner (yes, I ate dessert first) and there was no line and plenty of options. I went with the butter pecan, and my wife got the cookies and cream. One scoop in a cup was plenty to satisfy my craving. Im very happy to learn that these are South Carolina made products and not from somewhere else, which is all the more reason to come back. The ice cream was smooth, creamy, and full of flavor. Plenty of seating on this afternoon that we stopped by, and friendly service with a smile.
Best traditional ice cream Ive ever had! Just got mint chocolate chip here about 15 minutes ago (10 min before closing). The young lady that served us was sweet, gracious, & knowledgeable. Local ingredients! Wife had butter pecan...absolutely incredible! Not grainy or gritty like most ice cream. Fantastic experience! Thanks!
Oh my god! Horrible service and ice cream! Ordered a regular butter pecan/vanilla chocolate chip and a small chocolate chocolate chip. The clueless workers overflowed the regular cup with butter pecan and then went to scoop chocolate chocolate chip on top of it. It spilled all over us everywhere because it was overflowing! As we told the worker that we ordered vanilla chocolate chip with the butter pecan, the guy just kept scooping chocolate chocolate chip and looking at us dumbfounded! Then, they ran out of chocolate chocolate chip because they mistakenly put it in the other cup so the small cup was about 1/6th full. Still charged us full price! And the ice cream was terrible - horribly overpriced for the $10 we paid! Ended up throwing it away. Avoid at all costs!
When your in SC in the dead of summer, nothing beats a nice scoop of ice cream. This will fill that need just fine, but be prepared to pay for it!The location on King street is more than likely the reason that this place is SOOOOO pricey, and it is just that. Is it worth the price? I would say yes it is, but only as a one time treat, as there are other ice cream places in the area that have more flavors, and are far cheaper. HINT: They will do just 1 scoop if you want, and they will not charge as much! This is a unique place, and the ice cream flavors are fun. The chocolate chip ice cream was fantastic, as was the butter pecan. We both enjoyed ours quite a bit.The staff was very nice and fun to talk to, which also helped make this experience worth the money for us.
Ice cream was good. I was expecting more custard flavors since it was in the name but 2 was all they had. Nearly $10 for a milkshake seemed ridiculous to me. I asked if they were unusually big.. They said no. Average joint. Nothing extraordinary. Waffle cones were good.
This staff was AMAZING! The ice cream was great and you get what you pay for. They serviced us with a smile and answered all of our questions.
Excellent, creamy ice cream. We enjoyed butter pecan. A variety of common flavors along with mango and pumpkin. Also, 3 flavors of custard in addition to coffee and lattes. Friendly staff, freshly made waffle cones.
Good ice cream but terrible service. The girl did not greet us and instead ignored us for 5 min, while she was cleaning. A simple “hi I’ll be right there just give me a couple minutes.” would’ve been completely fine.
As a member of the military, Ive eaten ice cream all over this great country. This is the best ice cream I have ever had. My all time favorite. So far, Ive tried the cookies & cream and the butter pecan. Looking forward to trying them all before I get reassigned.
Used to be better but flavor seems to have slipped lately. I now prefer the higher-end competitor a couple of blocks north on King.
We thought the ice cream was delicious but my waffle cone fell apart almost instantly. With it being so expensive, I would expect the waffle cone not to fall apart until at least the end.
Ice cream is WAY too sweet ( I had mint chip and strawberry) First impression was sweet, no flavor . Mint chip has brittle tasteless chips. Strawberry just tasted sweet. Only one size (too big) one price $7. I wont go back. The custard is tasty though
$7 for ~6oz cup and $9 for a milkshake?! The ice cream is good but not THAT good. If youre thinking of going here, do yourself a favor: go next door to Cupcake Down South and get a world-class cupcake for about half the price.
My wife loves ice cream, but this place not so much. After trying a few samples she decided she didnt want any, which was shocking, you know it is bad ice cream when she passes it up.We got our daughter a small ice cream, and it wasnt very good. I got a custard twist, and I should have just passed it up.Will not return.
The soft serve custard beats any soft serve ice cream hands down! The only options were chocolate and vanilla. The only food dye to be found is in the mint chocolate chip ice custard. Thus no candy sprinklers. There are no restrooms.
I tried their coffee milkshake. It was good. But this is kinda expensive as compared to the quantity of cup. I ordered a lot more coffee flavour, but it was not that strong as I expected.
Home made ice cream. All natural. They make fresh waffle cones. Fast service
I normally get my ice cream in a cup but the smell of the freshly made cones convinced me to give them a try, so glad I did. The cone and ice cream were so good I went every day of my visit to Charleston
Shalee gave awesome service. She knew her product and was able to give some literature on the brand. I was extremely impressed. I will definitely revisit this establishment.
Fun fact: That rich creamy feeling in the butter pecan is Hellman’s mayonnaise.
30 minutes, below average ice cream. But 5 stars to the employees wearing bandanas tonight, they worked super hard.
I love the espresso and Ice cream. Im going to be a regular now for sure. Not to mention great service and a very cute staff. Especially Stephanie ;).
Awesome little place on the corner. Fair Prices. Dog friendly which is awesome to get out of the heat. Great Ice Cream.
Well priced and very friendly staff. The ice cream is wonderful and they go with the standard flavors so you know there will be something you like.
Best butter pecan ice cream in America
The prices were pretty crazy, and the cookies and cream icecream was loaded with something that definitely wasnt chocolate cookies....I had to throw it out.
Excellent service, but bad ice cream. I was craving ice cream and after sampling I was on the fence, but still decided on trying two scoops - barely ate through it and wish I hadn’t. Ice cream should be a joy to eat, not a chore.
They do what they do very well, but such a tiny selection. I love it, just want more variety!
Rich and creamy! Very good. And they have espresso!
A little on the high side but the ice cream tastes great
Great ice cream! I love their hot fudge Sunday.
Cookies and Cream was terrible and overpriced. Owners are rude and mistreat employees. Never buying from here again.
Delicious! Lots of really great flavors to choose from and their waffle cones are made in front of you and are so good!
These custards are really tasty and taste freshly made! The service here is good- everyone was nice and smiling- and it makes for a great spot to stop in after a dinner party or date night!
I absolutely loved this small ice cream shop. The girl behind the counter was completely nice and helpful.
Excellent customer service. Authentic custard. 10/10 would recommend.
Not a bad fall back for ice cream on Upper King when the line at Jenis is too long and Paolos Italian Gelato has closed for the night.
Cool place! Awesome waffle cones.
Huge portions, excellent Ambiance, and lovely people! 100% natural ice cream with awesome flavor.
Extremely overpriced for not that great of icecream. If you want more bang for your buck go to Jennis a few blocks down
My family enjoyed the buttered pecan, mint chocolate chip and cookies & cream. They all loved their scoops and we would stop in here again when downtown.
The ice cream was VERY overpriced and VERY underwhelming. How do you not have a restroom that your customers can use to wash up after having ice cream??? I had to go to the visitor center to clean up my kids. Very bad customer experience!!!
The ice cream I had when I went was spoiled. I was able to get a different flavor, but they did not remove the spoiled ice cream from the display for future buyers.
Ice cream was ok but the problem was I bought a milkshake and a hot fudge Sunday and spent $19.00. Wont do that again.
🍦Youll know when you walk in this magical ice cream shop... thank me later 😂🤣
No crazy flavors - just good, old-fashioned ice cream.
Had to wait to be served and when was finally “greeted” by the server-he was beyond rude to us. Left without ordering.
The coffee was so bitter and nothing could help. The icecream was underwhelming, and the service was only a little help.
