With the new expanded store they have greatly expanded their selection or both food, home goods, kitchen supplies, and novelties, which Im sure will continue to grow as they settle in. Lots of seasonal snacks and ingredients. They also stock everything you need for make your own sushi, hot pot, ramen.. and plenty of frozen and fresh appetizers to go with any meal! Cant recommend this place enough! Happy to come across these chestnut manju and houjicha latte powder, so cozy :)
The new expanded shop is bigger and better than ever. The extra space has allowed for more selection and more stock of Japanese ingredients but I saw the beauty and home departments are vastly expanded! I will also have a hard time keeping my kids away from the character sock collection!
Awesome place to shop Japanese products in Boston. Their new store (essentially right across the street from the old one) is much bigger and nicer too!
Great selection of Japanese produce, grocery, prepared food, and housewares. Easily accessible by T (66 or Green Line C)
After the store was updated, it became more spacious and more convenient. The assortment has expanded, new brands have actually appeared. In general, I really liked the update.
Very nice little store. Mostly snacks. There are also sections for frozen and refrigerated sliced meats for hot pot. Some sushi and bento boxes as well. It was very busy when we went around noon time which hopefully means the store is doing well and will be around for for while. There are also areas for rice, cooking sauces and baked goods.
My go-to grocery store for stocking up on Japanese and other Asian food once a week. Good selection of products. Prettiest and well packed produce and meat section. Very nice service.
Unfortunately they have a really bad return policy. The price is bad too.
Great little grocery store! One area for improvement: the onigiri wrappers really dont work that well. The whole thing comes apart when unwrapping it with the 1, 2, 3 system.
New location with roomy shelves and more foods, cookware and beauty supplies.
Their prepared meals (bento boxes) were spoiled. My family and I got food poisoned. We had stomachache and diarrhea overnight and couldnt sleep. I bought $100 worth of food and had to throw all the leftover away.
So beautiful! Clean, well organized, and full of delicious delights. Try the fresh ramen and mix ins for dinner!
Nice small place with a wide selection of items. The small ramen shop makes Really great food and is super reasonable price wise.
Literally love this place. GET THIER TUNA MAYO ONIGIRI! SO GOOD. TRY THEIR OKONOMIYAKI AND YAKISOBA COMBO. Will continue coming here. I try to come once a week. Usually as a treat on the weekends
Its crowded and somehow not very organized in the check out area. We were waiting in the line for 10min today and their cashiers are working in two different locations. The customer in front of me walked to a empty cashier at the other side of the check out area and the person there checked him out. So I followed that guy and also went to that cashier, then they told me, no, you have to wait in the line. I was like, yes, I was waiting in line two seconds ago, why you did not say it to the customer before me? I said, if you are closed, I will move back to the line and go to the other cashier. That cashier person gave me a look and stopped talking to me. At the same time, i am holding one 14 months baby in my hand and have a toddler sitting in the stroller, wondering what is going on. Then my friend said if you dont believe us were waiting in line you can ask those customers and they will tell you. Then that woman very reluctantly checked us out. Finally during this stressful period of pandemic this store just made us feel even more stressful. Thank you.
Thanks for letting me use your bathroom!
It’s really amazing. They had everything I was used to when I lived in Japan.
Coolidge Corner’s own little Japantown, this place is going to be a sensation. TL;DR: Definitely come for the wagyu ramen, and your fill of Japanese snacks.--The Grocery Store & DeliYou know a place is legit when all the ojiisans and obaasans are here shopping. You’ll no longer need to run to 88, or H Mart for your hot pot fixings; they sell produce, thinly sliced meat, and frozen WAGYU BEEF! The quality of the produce looks fresh y’all. The Tea ShopIt’s Gen Sou En? (Accept my old Gen Sou En reward points please?) It’s currently an abbreviated menu, but the hojicha tea latte and shrimp tempura onigiri are still on point.Brooklyn RamenThis is going to give Ganko next door a serious run for its money. Counter service, with American wagyu beef ramen. I’d recommend the miso over the shio if you’re looking for a mouthful of flavor. The shio was a bit too simple in flavor, and the noodles wheaty. The wagyu was tender, but because of how thick it’s sliced you kinda need to gnaw through it. I’d love the option of having it sliced thinly to layer on top (like in pho). The layout’s a little awkward right now (checkout’s in the center with lines wrapping around it, and seating is tight for the ramen & okonomiyaki shops), but I’m excited to see this place grow.
Pros: Lots of Japanese ingredients you wont find at supermarkets (yay okonomi sauce!). Very helpful staff. High quality wagyu beef. Great frozen dumpling selection. So many noodle varieties. Lots of good to-go options if you need a snack.Cons: store layout is kind of funky. The space used to be a tea house and they kept the curvy layout when converting to a market. It can be difficult to find things, so dont hesitate to ask for help.
Very spacious and great selection!
Just stopped into this place because I had an appointment nearby and wanted a snack. I bought a kimchi onigiri from the prepared food section and it was sooo fresh and super yummy. Small store but had a big variety of things, but was nicely organized, easy to navigate. Glad I know about this place now!
The staffs are nice and they have great groceries especially sashimi which is pretty hard to find in boston. The only drawback is that you cant bring a pet.
Great place to enjoy some true Japanese cuisine while being able to experience tons of Japanese snacks!
Love almost everything about this mini supermarket in the Coolidge corner of Brookline. Quite a wide variety of Japanese goods and food here! I’d say most of the staff is nice except one particular cashier who looks really angry and a little bit rude! So it’s only 4 stars for me.Update: 8/16/2021 that particular cashier is nowhere to be found! So I’ll give 5 stars!
This place has many Japan-imported ingredients, snacks, drinks, and cosmetics that are rare to find in Boston. Their cafe used to made wonderful hojicha latte that I would deliberately go there to have one. Sadly, they closed the cafe for some reason this year. I hope to see the cafe and that smiley barista back again.
We love Maruichi. Great fish for sushi and everything else for the pantry. We also always pick up some treats, onigiri and Brooklyn Ramen
The most authentic Japanese store in the Boston area. I also think you are better off buying the sashimi/kaisen donburis here than ordering at restaurants - super fresh. The staff is kind too!
The single best sushi in all of Brookline. It feels like it shouldnt be true with this being grocery store sushi but Ive tried sushi at restaurants all over Brookline and this is by far the best and half the price of most other places.
Fantastic place. Love the selection of candy
Very nice and the staff was on their game but I was a little disappointed on the sizeBut overall delighted
Disclaimer: used to work here for a bit so there is some inherent bias.Maruichi is a great Japanese grocery store thats family owned. Prices are generally quite reasonable for what youre getting; especially compared to the H Mart in Central Square. The caveat is that a lot of the products at Maruichi are of higher quality so the prices can be higher (if you just want mediocre or lower quality items, you wont find them here).Sushi is probably the best bang for buck in town. The manager is incredibly experienced and has been doing sushi for more than 20 years. His time in Japan has influenced his pricing strategy - he strongly believes you shouldnt have to break the bank to get high quality. Having worked there, I wholeheartedly vouch for the quality of the fish, rice, and other ingredients used. Additionally, the costs are incredibly low; youre paying $7 for a roll that costs $9-$11 elsewhere.
Awesome Japanese food and ingredients market.Makes me feel like I am back in Japan
I purchase the sushi rice for $19.95 as they advertise on their store. When I pay at the register. They charge me $39.95. They dont Honor their AD. I try talk to the manager on duty. The cashier said he is not at store.
A modern and clean store with items very reasonably priced! I think they have the best prices for most of the Japanese grocery items in the BOS metro area.
I dont review often, but this place is a great and long-awaited addition to the area. Good selection, reasonable prices, helpful staff. They seem to have high product turnover so they are often out of things...hopefully that is just a post-launch logistical issue. Im hopeful that they will hit their stride over the next few months without compromising on service or raising prices.
Its very pretty inside. The cashiers are quick to help.
Great little Japanese grocery/deli shop.Variety they have for lunch is not bad, but I wish the price was a bit lower.
It is a great place to get supplies for japanese dish cooking. You can find everything, from wagyu meat to whatever strange names thing have, and also beautiful cooking utensils. I will be definitely coming back ! :)
Much things. Very like. Many prepared foods. Great meals easy. Ramen shop inside. Very nice.
My regular grocery shopping place. High quality products with reasonable prices. It also has seasonal products like Matsutake in the fall.
Nice selection of seasoning/snacks/tea. Price is surprisingly reasonable considering its location and product quality.
Very nice place to buy food from JP. the fish and meet are very fresh
Supermarket is good here. Has some good fish and meats, ramen shop is not great. The gyoza there has no pork inside. Just filled with mushroom.
You can get authentic Japanese snacks, bakery, bento, Ramen kits, wagyu of various parts and selections, sashimi-grade fish, rice, etc.! If you are a Japanese foodie you surely want to visit Maruichi. Location is convenient at Coolidge Center in Brookline; 2 min walking from Green C line and plenty street parking near-by.BTW, Shiki Japanese restaurant at the corner is great too.
I was excited to see that the former Gen Sou En location got a 2nd attempt. The store has a pop up / temporary feel in a not positive way to it. I believe a strong vision is needed to make the store successful. Right now the store feels very random and there is no strategy / theme to it. The food court is very practical and I cant imagine it will be buzzing location anytime soon. I wish them the best of luck and 4 stars to support the mission.
I come here often because that’s where I can find Marusan soy milk (plain or unsweetened). Good selection of prepared food (sushi, chirashi, and other hot options). It has a small restaurant at the back seving ramen and okonomyaki. I tried the new lobster ramen and found it delicious!
A hidden gem of a grocery store in Coolidge Corner. They have well priced fresh greens, and also very good import foods from Japan! In the back of the store is a cute ramen shop, which puts out to-go boxes throughout the day for purchase in the grocery store. The shop also has a tea table for boba and other milk teas. I really love this place and come here for all my Asian food, ramen, and bubble tea needs. Unfortunately it is almost always packed, so going there during rush-shopping times makes me nervous.
Good prices and great stuff. Store is clean and fun
Cool store with lots of japanese food options but store setup needs improvement.
Everything I needed to make a nice weekday meal for the family plus some tasty takeout for lunch too.
Best meats for hot pot
Interesting addition to Coolidge corner. Love ya of Asian products, some ready to go meals.Cafe space w clear flour bakery goods. The grocery store portion is a bit overpacked particularly given there is so much space there.
Delicious selection of Japanese specialty items as well as great meat and fish selections. Very excited for this grocery store to be open in Brookline! Also, the staff are all so nice and helpful.
Amazing selection of imported and hard-to-find SE Asian goods.
Small store but with a fairly decent selection of Japanese items. Some of their selections are only found in Japanese stores but not the regular asian grocers. Price is actually comparable or actually cheaper than most Japanese or Asian grocery stores in and around Boston. Definitely worth the trip if you live in the city.
Many sort of foods are displayed in compact space. You can see a lot of Japanse products. This store provide not only groceries but also some kind of meal and has Japanese style eat-in space. It looks like Japanese high way service area.
Great place to shop and grab some tea/ramen
Great produce and prepared food. Hard to find Japanese food elsewhere in the city!
Excellent place to eat, have some coffee and grocery shop. Stopped in and was really impressed by the variety and quality of foods. Will return!
I wore a Face Shield while shopping, and was asked to leave as it didnt meet their face covering standards. I was never asked if I had any alternative face coverings. I have worn this shield at work, to medical appointments, and when picking up food at other restaurants workout so much as a double take.
Best Japanese connect around. Not too many options, but Corvid will do that.
Great store. Food is better then most restaurants. Very clean and people are nice
Excellent customer service!
Great quality of ingredients and selections.
Great place to shop for all sorts of Japanese goodies from produce to yummy treats. Feels as we were in Japan.
This place is awesome! Great place to get some Japanese groceries! A place to get very good cuts of meat (Wagyu Beef!) and some good japanese Pantry Items. Also if you want to get some good chef knives, it looks like they have a partnership with Korin!
The market is kind of a mixed bag. A lot of interesting sundries, snacks, and other small items. It goes without saying that youll be paying a premium for Japanese import items, which I have only seen at this market. I would probably not do my weekly shopping here for groceries etc. The meat quality did look top notch however. The real reason you should come here is for the take home ramen items. In the fridge next to the checkout counter there are several food items made on-site from the Brooklyn Ramen shop. The tonkotsu ramen broth and the fresh noodles are restaurant quality. I have been craving restaurant style ramen ever since quarantine started and this was a great stop gap in the meantime. The math worked out to be roughly $6 per serving. A great deal.Ill be coming back to get the ramen again. I still need to try the cafe/coffee that is on-site.
Goods deals on noodle bowls.
Amazing Japanese Food Market! Relatively cheaper than H Mart and Ebisuya for most things. It also has thinly sliced meat and eggs you can eat raw.
This store is great for grocery shopping and quick dine-in. Many asian groceries store have depressing atmosphere, but this store is very clean and posh. My new favorite place to go in Brookline!
Neat
Pretty authentic Japanese grocery store with food court and deli
Really good variety and produce at good prices
Best selection of Japanese grocery in Boston area
Fantastic and fully decked out supermarket, with great variety and healthy choices.
It will be better if they have more rooms for Japanese goods.
Great little store with a good variety of Japanese groceries and more! Among the many surprise items here include good Japanese knives (Korin) and Brooklyn Ramen in the back! Folks have to try the ramen as long as they are there...the wagyu miso ramen was fantastic. The broth was made with sake kasu (sake byproduct) so it has a nice fermented sake aroma that complements so well the creaminess of the sake broth!! Must have. The shio ramen is also quite good! Shoyu ramen was a bit heavy as it was a bit more unctuous.
Nice modernized store but it is small and can be difficult to navigate around
Great place! Lots of Japanese delicacies to try.
Pricey but if you just want to purchase Japanese item grocery... this is probably be the choice
Good selection of product
Lovely Japanese market!
Great place to snack.
Clean and pleasant, to shop for Japanese food
They will be open January 2020 !!
Great store for Japanese
Amazing place with good prices. Everything you need Japanese.
Great grocery store with fresh, high quality ingredients. Good selection of prepared foods.
🎊Boston finally opened a new Japanese supermarket😍I ate ramen in the supermarket. The first time I ate Hezhou beef was good quality! Buy a variety of 🇯🇵 ingredients and buy Japanese fried chicken 丼 and go home for dinner 逛 Take a stroll around and come back for coffee ☕️ and bread 🥐 A very satisfying day! !! !! Next time I will eat Okonomiyaki again, and I look forward to introducing sushi 唷 👍🏻
Although it is small, it sells a lot of things
Great okonomiyaki
