Gene Johnson Garage is the best!!! I have been going here for my automotive needs for more than 20 years!!! Tommy and Bubba are absolutely two of the best guys!!!! I cannot say enough good things about this place... They are, in my opinion, the first place to go... They will take care of you and your vehicle.

Recently I was able to get an inspection for my car to renew my registration. I am a happy repeat customer of M E Gene Johnson Garage for this service. They also offer auto repairs. I love that they have kept the retro gas station building in use without the gas part of retail, retaining the architecture and vintage Austin vibe. The staff are friendly, professional, fair and efficient. The location on Airport Boulevard is very convenient too.

This is the best auto shop in Austin. As a woman I’m always hesitant to take my car in for service by myself. I’m afraid I’m going to be scammed or taken advantage of because of my lack of car knowledge. The servicemen here are incredibly respectful and take their time explaining the repairs that are needed. Once, I brought my car in for service that ended up not being necessary, and they sent me home with no charge instead of performing the unneeded service to make the money. I always feel like me and my car are taken seriously when I come here and I appreciate that.

I was beyond impressed with their service. I got both my breaks and a rotor fixed for less than half of the price of another mechanic. Highly recommend and will use them again!

I have been going to these guys since 1997. They have always taken the best possible care of my vehicles. My Miata, my Blazer and my beloved Tahoe, (affectionately called the Beast), all exceeded 200,000 miles and the Beast just rolled over on 300,000! I blame it on the gang at the garage. They are quick, thorough and absolutely wonderful. It is a rare occurrence that I do not get my vehicle back same day. They keep this road warrior rolling down the freeway, crawling over rocks and streams, and skating over the sand. Red blooded murica all the way. Love love LOVE this place!! Best mechanic ever. Referred here by two friends, and I can see why! When I did my first buyers inspection, they were patient, helpful, and respectful with all of my questions even though it was painfully obvious that I knew nothing about cars at the time. After the inspection, they went through the results and cost of repairs with me, as well as discussing which ones were potential safety concerns and which were not. Very kind and honest people. One of the problems with the car had a 30-second fix that they did right then free of charge without me even asking and even though it wasn’t even my car yet! Wow. They also wrote out what body work was recommended and referred me to a body shop that gave me a free quote for those repairs. They also talked me through later repairs for required maintenance, including how much those would cost and which ones were easy enough to do myself so I wouldn’t have to spend the extra money! Theyre amazing and I have been coming back ever since. Would highly recommend this garage. I love these guys so much. They are competent, have very fair prices, dont judge you if you ask stupid questions, and will go out of their way to NOT sell you stuff you dont need. Tom once told me straight-up not to get the A/C on my car fixed because the repair would cost over $1400 and would only make it a little cooler, while there was nothing mechanically wrong with the car. These guys deserve all the stars possible. :) I pick them every time I can. They also offer a AAA discount if you have your membership card.

I needed a flat tire repaired quickly. The mechanic fit me in, fixed the flat and put the tire back on in 15 minutes.

Highly recommended! These dudes are honest and efficient. If they cant help you, or you could get it cheaper elsewhere (like a tire-related issue I once had), theyll tell you straight up. I have recommended them to at least 3 other people over the years, and theyve been just as pleased as me. I cant sing their praises enough. The only reason I havent been in lately is bc I bought a new car.

This is the best gararge in Austin which I really would like to suggest to see and use this service. I got the problem my car not running and death in the middle of the road and Bubba is the best who helping me and move my car to his garange, and he did the repair for my car since the last 2 years and always turn out very positive, reasonable price and on time.and very helpful person and professional service in this garage .. I had to Get some new spark plugs for my wife’s car and the dealership quoted us at a pretty high price. Rob and the guys replace the spark plugs and took care of the brakes for the same deal. I would highly recommend these guys and they’re going to be working on my car as well now.

I have been going to this garage since I moved to Austin in 2010. I wont take my vehicle anywhere else. They are kind, timely, fairly priced and know what they are doing. When my car was more seriously damaged from an accident a few years ago, I took it to Gene Johnson garage first for a quote, my insurance pushed to have me take it somewhere else but when I did the other place quoted it more expensive and said there was more damage than Gene Johnson did. I took it back to Gene Johnson and havent had any problems with the vehicle in the last 3 years since that happened. Cant recommend them enough. I also get my oil changed here.

I took my vehicle in to get an inspection. The inspection was extremely quick! The employees were very friendly and informative as well. I really enjoyed my experience here.

State inspection took about 10 minutes without an appointment this place is awesome

Heres one example. My tire guy told me I needed new stuff for my suspension. Obviously, I dont know squat about cars. Took it to my long time garage Gene Johnson telling them what had been recommended for me and ready to shell out the bucks. They brought out a mechanic right away who checked it out and said the car was fine. Then sent me on my way no charge. These people have worked on my cars starting with Volkswagen, through my Toyota phase, and now with my Hondas. I completely trust them.

The city of Austin named a street after Gene Johnson; thats how well-respected the fella is! Great service, friendly folks, decent prices! Cant beat it!!

The team at M E Gene are so quick and kind. A plastic part had come loose on the bottom of my Subaru. I stopped by to see if they could help. They took care of it in 10 minutes and didnt charge a thing. We come here on the regular for our oil changes; we love these guys.

My mom has always told me about this place and I was iffy about going here cause I knew that they were pricey but I rather pay for quality than than pay someone who doesnt do the job right and Im back the next week and being a Cadillac owner your iffy about where you take it and I took it here and they fix my problems and I never had to come back and plus they understand that car repairs are high and they worked with me until I had all the money I love them they are awesome sauce and Tom is awesome sauce every time I call all I have to say is was kind of car I have and he knows exactly who I am. I really want to thank you guys youre awesome service and I will most definitely let people know that this is the right place to be.

Great place! They were able to fit me in right away to get my brakes looked at. I brought it in at 7am, got a call with a quote around 10 (the price was very reasonable and they didnt try to overcharge for things I didnt need) and they had it done before 12:30pm. They seemed to be very busy, but were still able to get my car taken care of pretty quickly. I was also offered a lift back to my house since I live close by so I didnt have to wait around for everything to be completed. All of the employees I dealt with were very nice and professional.

Go-to shop in Austin, Ive always gotten great service

They replaced an alternator in 95 Chevy dead easy and inexpensive didnt even have to diagnose the problem because it was obvious when you turned the key. Charged about $500 for a part that costs $150 and not more than a hour of labor due to wide open engine bay with plenty of room to work on it yourself. In addition the pully was replaced because it was time. Hasnt been a year yet and the overpriced alternator is failing, so I suspect they used a cheap refurbished one to save money. Im not happy with the quality and the price of this shop and would recommend you to take a look elsewhere. Do not have your vehicle towed here if you dont like captive audience prices with sub standard quality parts.

Best mechanics in town

A few days ago, while we were on vacation in Austin, the check engine light came on in our 2003 Camry. I found M E Gene Johnson Garage via Google Maps, called at 9 a.m., arrived at 9:20 and was on my way by 9:30! The expert mechanics there ran diagnostics on our car, determined that the problem was gas fume detection due to a loose gas cap, and sent me on my way -- for no charge! If I ever have repair work to do in Austin, M E Gene Johnson Garage is the first place I will turn to.Kudos to Tom, who greeted me in a very friendly fashion and explained the problem clearly.

I dont write a lot of reviews, but these guys are the tops. Ive had work done at other shops around Austin, but M.E. Gene Johnson crew do great work at fair prices. They are fast and friendly. A great experience every time Ive dealt with them.

Incredibly fast and reasonably priced. My only problem. Is that they focus so much on speed and getting people through that service at the front can be a tad bit rude especially if youre new at the car thing.

I initially pulled into M E Gene to get some gas. I was shocked when one of the guys behind the front desk offered to pump my gas for me even after I told him I wasnt there to have any work done. When my check engine light came on a week later, I looked these guys up online to make sure there were no red flags from past clients. Long story short, these guys were very accommodating, and even though I know nothing about cars (which Im sure they figured out) they didnt try to upsell me on anything. Furthermore, they had my truck diagnosed, parts ordered, parts installed, oil changed, tires rotated, and truck inspected within 24 hours. Highly recommend.

Fast and easy shop to get your inspection done at.

I have used this garage since 2005. We moved from around the corner and it was less convenient, but I still take my cars back there.Why?Because they do great work...and they are extremely trustworthy...I cannot count the times I have taken one of our vehicles and they either noted a simple no cost fix or just said they didnt think there was a problem.Then most recently they drove to meet my wife to fill up a flat tire as she was stranded and I could not get to her. Then proceeded to tell her no charge. Who does that?If you want 1950s style of customer service from people who will treat you kindly and fairly...this is the place.

Went to the local Nissan dealer for an oil change and they told me I needed $2000 worth of work, which seemed odd, considering I wasnt noticing anything wrong. On the recommendation of friends, I took my SUV to Gene Johnson for a second opinion and they looked at it and told me nothing needed to be done and didnt even charge me for the diagnostic! SO grateful for their honesty! I will be back!

Terrible service. I went in for a state inspection, no issues with my car except the third bumper brake light (which isn’t even required until next year). Was told by an employee that it wouldn’t be an issue, went to order the part, then was told by the owner that they wouldn’t pass me when I returned with the receipt. Thank God I ordered the part from Auto Zone instead of them. Just wasted my entire morning and I definitely won’t be back. I’m somewhat used to being given the runaround and crappy treatment when I show up to garages without a man with me, but this was especially bad. Avoid like the plague.
