Sean and the rest of the back country team are so knowledgeable and awesome! Sean spent over an hour helping me pick out a perfect pair of sunglasses. Even googling my questions and finding answers. Had such a blast there and the worst part was when I had to leave. 10/10 also look at my dog in the sunglasses I ended up with - amazing

Ive had varying experiences with employee personality over the years (sometimes outdoor enthusiasts in retail can think theyre pretty cool), but mostly the staff is helpful and efficient. If you live in the Salt Lake area, its really a neat concept to have such vast inventory available for try on and pick-up, especially right before a roadtrip or for gifts as opposed to chasing around to every Northwest-based outdoor retailer location in the area in hopes of finding a specific item.

I purchased a solar generator and solar panels from this company. Yikes, what a mistake. It took almost two months to get my order. Then two weeks after I got my generator, they sent me another one. Why? I have no idea. I cancelled the shipment with the shipping company. Then they returned my original payment (for the first generator) to me via Paypal. Basically, screwing themselves out of payment. I did call them so they would reverse the Paypal reimburse since who needs bad karma. A poorly run business. I will say the Customer Support people were readily available and very nice otherwise theyd get one star.

Shopping at the Backcountry store is like eating something that is way too hot; you know it’s going to hurt, but you do it anyway. The disconnect between the website and the retail store never fails to disappoint. Highly recommend thinking of them as two completely separate businesses as they are never on the same page. The upshot is the staff is generally very friendly.

Good selection of outdoor gear for almost any sporting adventure and casual outing. Prices are pretty much always steep, even when youre looking at their major sales. Ive never had a problem with quality of items purchased here and usually shipping and processing are prompt. Rarely have I had an issue with delayed orders unless an item is on backorder. Sometimes popular items are hard to find in the proper size, as smaller sizes seem to be quickly sold out. Ive gotten some of my best, most rugged and long lasting cycling gear here, but again, you pay quite a lot for this high quality gear.

Refused to let me pick up my item because they close in 5 min after telling me on the phone they are open until 6. Drove 45 min to get here and it’s too much work for them to look for my part during their business hours. The staff say they are actually open until 5:35 or 5:40 and could not care less that they wasted my time.

Fairly disappointed. Purchased a child snowsuit and paid more than I probably should have, $150. I saw they had a next day air delivery option and their website claimed a fast processing time. Placed an order at 4:30 CST on on 12/30 and paid an extra $30 for next day air service. I will not receive until 1/4 because it was shipped at 1 pm CST on 12/31 as UPS next day air saver, instead of just regular next day air which would have been delivered on 1/2. I really regret my purchase. I could have purchased at multiple other places for 20% lower price, either with a coupon or a teacher discount. Other sites also offered free shipping that would have arrived by 1/6.Im sure the snowsuit will be of good quality, but I paid a premium for speed. Should have went with pretty much any other option and saved $60 + tax and received in a similar time line. I feel like they cheaped out to go with UPS next day air saver. Next day air UPS, FEDEX, and even USPS would have delivered 2 days sooner.

Just overall not what they used to be a few years ago. I am local here and have always been so happy with Back Country and now it feels like more of a large chain retailer that is only looking at the bottom line instead of pleasing the customers. Good selection and quality, but we went on a Saturday to pick up a bike that my husband had ordered 2.5 months earlier...had been shipped incorrectly against requests and returned to the warehouse for us to pick up when we got into SLC from our home in Alaska, before a 4 hour drive to Moab. We called from Seattle to check it was at the warehouse and were told it was. Arriving at the warehouse, no bike” (Competitive Cyclist) people were in the store, and we waited an hour as those on hand searched the warehouse to try to get any conclusive information as to where it night be. While we waited we asked a young woman who was there for help finding out more about the price of a mountain bike for sale. I would have bought it on sight but she never got back to us with the price even though she was sitting behind her desk with no one in front of her to assist, but with plenty of time to talk about skiing with coworkers. We finally left and decided to spend our money elsewhere. Seems to me they need better systems in place, and a manager on site with some skin in the game. Too bad we used to love these guys.

Worst buying experience ever! Placed my order Saturday and wanted to pick it up since I live close. Customer service canceled my order and replaced it to help me have the option to pick it up. Then was told my item was on back order, out on hold and then told it was sorted and it would be ready for pick up Monday. Monday rolls around, get an email saying it was on back order and I could pick up half my order. Call customer service to find out what’s going on and was told my order was complete and in the store to pick up, but they were closed and to call in the morning. Call in the morning, rep tells me someone will call me and I can pick it up same day, never got a call so I called back. I was told they were done fulfilling orders for the day and to call back tomorrow. Somehow I don’t think I’m getting my order and it’s for a ski trip this weekend. AWESOME!! Love getting the run around!

This place needs to get their house in order. Their inventory system is pure junk which is probably from having a high turn over rate. For a business that primarily operates online one would think they’d have a proven system in place. And good luck trying to shop in their SLC retail store. Takes 20 minutes just for one item to come out regardless if there’s anyone else in front of you and half the time their items aren’t in the SLC location. Not sure if they’re trying to take on REI or not but if so they need to get a better return policy, learn how to process refunds faster and tighten up their inventory system.

Very disappointed with the state of the products I received. I ordered a pair of $190 snow boots and one of the boots was clearly worn already. Leather creased, hair/debris inside, laces undone, etc. I returned this pair and repurchased thinking this time Id surely receive new boots, but no, same story. Even the second pair I received was already creased and slightly worn. It appears they only sell display models that get tried on over and over again in store. When I spend that much on a pair of boots, I dont think its too much to ask for a pair thats NEW. I will not be spending any more of my money at Backcountry.

Been here many times. Living nearby is convenient to stop by and pull a few items from the warehouse to check out. Don’t like it, send it back. Free online returns in store also. The only drawback is that there isn’t a way to see beforehand if the item is available here or if it is in their other warehouse on the East Coast (Virginia I think). You can go in store and see or call and chat with somebody on the phone before hand but just pulling up the item online and checking local availability would be awesome. Obviously, this has limited utility, for locals only which is a very small part of their overall business I’m sure.Otherwise worth a look. Their store front is fairly small so going just to browse the store itself isn’t the most exciting venture. Come with your wishlist loaded up. The warehouse is the limit! Staff has always been good. Helpful and friendly. Always helpful. It would be cool if they offered a discount of some sort for in store pickup since they don’t have to spend the money shipping stuff around. Even a percent or two would be nice. They did just start their premier club with point accrual quarterly so we will see how that pans out.

I had a really great experience at their retail store but the fact that it has come to light that they have been suing small outdoor stores over their use of the term “backcountry” shows the total disconnect between this business and the customer base that they serve. Been purchasing since 2008, and I think they have gone downhill since about 2012/2013. Besides suing anyone using the term backcountry I think they became too big and discarded the local community. Every year or two I give them a shot. I needed a backpack to put a skateboard on for my child going on a summer trip. On a Monday, I ordered the skateboard from tactics out of Oregon (free shipping) and the backpack from backcountry.com. Paid $9 for shipping from backcountry for a $24 backpack. Skateboard from Tactics arrived on Wednesday. Tracking on the backpack said Saturday night. (5 day estimate to go 18 miles, but whatever I just needed it by Monday) Saturday night comes, didnt show up. Today is Sunday. They have a Ups to Usps handoff service? I chatted with a rep as I desperately need it by tomorrow. The reply, give it a few more days. So estimate is now a week and a half to get across the valley? Go talk to rmatv about how they take care of the locals with fast shipping. The rep answered that next time (yeah right) if i place an order and I want it quicker than 5-10 business days, i can contact customer service, tell them I am in Utah (didnt know it was a secret with my order info), and maybe they can do ups ground or something. No thank you. Time to support real local, not backcountry.com that climbed to where it is on the backs of the local community, and now gives 10 business day shipping a few cities away. Retail store is closed due to covid-19 which is understandable, but Im out of luck. So on my much needed day off Ill be going to the malls and local skateshops fighting the crowds which i would like to avoid for my physical and mental health. Next time Ill shop elsewhere. But, thanks tactics boardshop for the free 2-day shipping on the skatedeck! Should have ordered a backpack from them too. - Editing. Just remembered that BEFORE I placed this order I did chat with CS tom make sure it was shipping out of the Salt Lake warehouse to make sure i would get it in time....

I have been a customer online for years. Took the family to Utah skiing for spring break, and had decided before the trip that my wife and I would buy new equipment during the trip. So this morning, we headed over to Backcountry, expecting to walk out with all new equipment. Couldn’t really get anyone to help us, so I had to interrupt the salesperson who was eating her lunch at the sales counter. She walked us over to computers and told us to browse their website, and to write down the item numbers of things we wanted to see, and someone would fetch them from the warehouse for us. We weren’t sure what we wanted other than we are from the Midwest and do not have a quiver of skis, so we wanted all-mountain skis. We couldn’t find anyone to help us, and in less than 10 minutes, we left.At this point of the year, no one in SLC has much, if any, skis in stock, so we finally drove to Park City where the stores still have skis. We got awesome customer service at Jan’s and Park City Ski Boot, and within a couple of hours, were completely outfitted with new everything.Backcountry may have the gear in the warehouse, but when we were there, they didn’t have the knowledge or support in the showroom.

Its the most amazing customer experience, so the initial scoring would have been a six star. After calling customer service and finding out which items are in the west valley warehouse I went there to try them on. Once I chose one item, I basically picked it up right there from the warehouse window.. I requested to get a new item, not the one on display. That would have been the six star experience. However, once I got home and unpacked the new item, I discovered fingerprints and a scratch on the lens. I called immediately and returned the item for an exchange and that meant to deal with skeptical staff at the front desk. They remembered me buying the item the day before and openly doubted the case. Now I am being quizzed and basically frowned upon by two of the front desk employees. How embarrassing that was can anyone imagine. Awful experience......which levels the score to 3 stars.

This is the only facility I know of that has just about everything in stock so you can try everything on, check for compatibility, etc. This is extremely important for mountaineering boots (what I needed), which are extremely expensive and almost never in stock on location at other major distributors. The gearheads were extremely helpful, I must have tried on a dozen pairs of boots. I cant imagine attempting to properly gear-up without this retail location. Also, they have a very generous return policy - so, theres that (just in case something doesnt fit/work).I cant recommend this store enough. Might even be worth flying into town for just to visit this store if you are preparing for a trip where you either a lot of gear or gear that isnt in stock in your local stores (e.g. mountaineering boots, layering systems for extreme weather, etc.).

Everyone at the retail store was super friendly and very helpful. Think his name was John but the homie was super helpful and pointed me in the right direction with a helmet selection. They were all super super busy but everyone made sure I was taken care of. Cheers to the crew

Some of the best customer service Ive ever experienced. Mike C. was especially helpful in both selling us a Thule roof-top cargo box at a great price and then expediting a warranty exchange when it was damaged in a storm 2 years later. Thank you Mike!

Ordered some gear from them, got a call from one of their Gearheads, Nick Chan, the next day thanking me for my order and an email follow up in case I needed any further assistance. Everything arrived as ordered, on time. Two days after arrival, I noticed the same stuff I just bought, now on sale. I called up the Nick who thanked me for my original order and left a message. He called me back pretty quickly, said they would be able to refund me the difference, no problem! Youre getting a return customer with friends for sure!

I recently purchased a yakima skybox and picked it up at the retail store. Amazing customer service. The rep went above and beyond to get the box installed on my car there at the store. Definitely recommend purchasing from this location.

Backcountry is a Class Act. They have great products and inventory. They are very accommodating and helpful. They are even willing to compete with other web based businesses.

I normally shop at REI, but I was in a hurry so I stopped in this place hoping to find what I was looking for. The first associate I talked with seemed fairly snooty and uninterested in my plight, and I had every intention of leaving after our...conversation. However, another associate overheard us and rummaged through his inventory and (what do you know) he found what I was searching so diligently for! 4 stars for stuck up worker, but an otherwise pleasant experience. Very fair prices.

I love backcountry and I love their store front. I can go try on just about any gear I could dream of all at one place. The staff here are generally friendly and helpful. The online experience is fantastic. After I placed a larger order a while back a customer satisfaction person sent me an email and was able to help me with returns, new purchases gear recommendations etc. I’ve had few customer service experiences better than at backcountry.

Handed one of the employees the paper with my requests of what shoes I wanted, and she aggressively snatched it right out of my hand and didnt say a single word. Service could be much better.

Clearly the culture at Backcountry has allowed their business to operate in a way that does not represent backcountry values. I will never shop here again, especially in light of the CEO’s non-apology for bullying small business.

Been in to their retail store a lot. sometimes it takes 45 minutes to get one item, and sometimes I can get several items in 5 minutes. Crowds seem to be the same in all instances. Seems to be hit or miss depending on who they have working in the warehouse. Has been getting better. They usually have everything I want to see, occasionally there will be an item in a size or color thats only in their Virginia warehouse. Theyve been putting more products out on their floor which is good. I just really like to see things before I buy, otherwise I wouldnt be going to their building and id just order online.

Ashleigh is an awesome gearhead! FedEx destroyed the package of the gift I purchased and claimed that it was undeliverable. Ashleigh re-shipped a gift and called me to offer further assistance with the return if the gift didnt fit. Thank you, Ashleigh!

The retail store is more of a showroom. They have a limited selection of high end items on display but the majority of the items you look at with the computer and they pull the items from the warehouse for you to see. Keep in mind it takes a bit of time but its well worth the trip!

Are used to be a huge fan of backcountry. I even worked for them at one point. Recently they change the return policy which was frustrating to me (I would think that if the item was purchased well they offer a lifetime warranty they will still honor that warranty if something happened however the change in the policy was retroactive and not publicly announced). They also recently made some very political comments that turned me off. I do like that they will match the price of other local or online retailers and their gear experts truly are knowledgeable about the product. However, that doesnt overshadow the other stuff for me and I now by my gear elsewhere.

The workers arent super attentive, but theyre busy. Basically you go in an do your online shopping on their computers and then they pull the items off the shelves to try on/see. Everyone is super friendly though!! Worth the stop to avoid the hassle of buying and returning online!
