Ok, first thing. I was met immediately at the door by a super friendly staff member (Joe). I explained that I had 3 issues with my bike. Expecting to have to leave my bike for at least a day or two. Upon leaving, I looked back and saw 3 staff members working on my bike! I mean, no one was standing around. To my surprise, Joe called me before I even got home to inform me my bike was ready. Returning to pick up my bike was just as pleasant. I didnt get the young mans name that helped me then. Best of all, the price for the repairs was far less than I expected. Awesome bike shop!!!

These folks cant handle running a business. I was charged around $300 for a full tune on a normal mechanical road bike which included hub maintenance, general cleaning, cabling, and adjustments, and when my bike was deemed finished NONE of these things were complete, my hub was damaged, and simple things like correct cable routing on standard mechanical derailleurs was either too much trouble, or done by a child. I cant warn you enough to stay away from this shop. The level of service, even after spending over 5k with them in a two month period was absolutely shocking. There are lots of competent bike shops in the Seattle area, but Montlake is absolutely not one of them.

Very friendly salesmen and the store was super busy throughout. I think they handled customers who came for new bike purchase with the same enthusiasm as the customers who came to buy a spare part for $5. If they are treating the service customers this well, then I see myself going to this store for every bike needs. I purchased a canondale Topstone from them and the experience was good. There was an 8 month old well behaved pup that was running around the store and I had a good time playing with him. His name was Dact I think

This is the best bike shop in Seattle. Great and diverse selection of bikes, extremely knowledgeable and friendly staff, and they provide fast service. I will embellish on this greatness with two stories:1) My coworkers and I were on the Seattle to Portland ride a few years back, and one persons rear wheel began popping spokes 20 miles in to the first day. By the time we reached the rest stop in Puyallup, the wheel was completely detensioned and unable to be ridden. Montlake had a maintenance tent set up at the stop, and they simply gave him a new wheel so that he could keep riding, and told him to swing by back when he was in Seattle to pay for it. How cool is that?!2) I began a new bike search in March of 2021, and after going to a few other shops, was terrified at the shortages in the bike industry and lack of bikes (e.g. Greggs had literally 1 endurance road bike in stock). My terror subsided as soon as I walked into Montlake, which had a ton of bikes of varying makes and styles! I casually test rode over ~2 months, and Carolyn finally helped me pick a beautiful steel frame made by Gunnar. What could have been a stressful or pressured experience was relaxing and fun, and Im super happy with my bike!!Will definitely be back!

This is by far my favorite shop in the city. After completing STP on a $200 Specialized, I knew it was time for a better rig. Sore shoulders, back and arms after every ride, I knew I needed a proper fitting. 15 years ago Gary sold me my first real road bike and did an amazing job fitting me properly. I have put many century + rides on that bike and I still love it. Just a few years ago when I took it in for regular maintenance Gary was still there. That says a LOT. After starting a family distance cycling became a thing of the past for us (for now!) but I couldnt give up cycling. Just this week I got my first gorgeous gravel bike! Im so excited to go rip around in the dirt and on the trails with my kiddos! We are even going to try bikepacking. Thank you to everyone at the shop for being so kind, knowledgeable and unpretentious. Its shops like Montlake that keep us cycling. THANK YOU!

The shop is nice and staff are friendly but the lack of communication and attention to detail are HORRIBLE. I spent over $4000 at this shop and bought an electric Brompton from them. 2 months later the battery would not deliver power to the bike (Brompton issue, not the shop) so I took it in and specifically told them the issue of how the battery would not deliver power or indicate any source of power when connected to the bike. One week later I called to follow up on the status of the Brompton due to the fact I havent heard anything from them. The guy on the phone said it was complete and I inquired why they did not call. The guy said they did try to call, but I did not receive any voicemail from them on my end? Any shop doing a service repair would leave a voicemail for the customer if they couldnt reach them.So I went to the shop to pick up my Brompton, and the staff helping me was friendly. He stated they did a software update. I come to attach the battery pack back on the Brompton and still no power was indicated nor given to the bike. Meaning, they did not read my report on the issue of the bike or even TEST RIDE IT to see the issue I reported. The guy helping me looked clueless. It was a pure lack of attention or effort to service the bike. I told him the issue was still there and they would have known if they actually tested the bike instead of just doing a software update. The guy took it to the back to be seen by the mechanic and he came back out and said it was the battery indicator, as they tested it with another Brompton battery and the same issue came up. No power indicated or delivery to the bike. He says they will have to order a new battery indicator (under warranty) from London and could take 2-3 weeks. They would have known that if they actually tested the bike itself THE FIRST TIME and now Im without a bike for commuting even longer.I regret buying a Brompton and bringing it to service from Montlake Bicycle Shop due to the lack of communication and attention to detail. Well see if they actually manage to repair or order the defective part.

The people, products, and service at Montlake Bicycle are great! In May I decided I wanted to look at buying a new bike, likely a road bike, and Montlake Bicycle was one of the shops I visited to test ride bikes that were on my short list. The team there provided great advice and the opportunity to test ride several bikes. Mike, was helpful and there was no pressure to buy one. I ended up test riding multiple bikes at this shop and two other stores all on the same day for direct comparison.Once I decided which bike I wanted to buy, a week later I returned to Montlake for one final check to make sure I selected the size that would be the very best fit. Covid was still impacting businesses, and limiting business interactions so I called Montlake about a repeat visit on short notice. Carolyn answered the phone, and agreed to let me drop by for a brief size check that afternoon. When I arrived, an employee named Michael took time to see me on two different size Warbird bikes and recommended the 56 cm frame. I could immediately tell he really knew how to size a bike for someone. There was no BS, just on target advice.Overnight, I digested the info., and returned the very next day to buy the bike. Once again, Michael provided sage advice that matched up perfectly with what two cycling expert neighbors had recommended, further confirming Michael knows this stuff really well. That afternoon he helped me with the purchase of my new Warbird, plus bike shoes, pedals, a bike pump, and cycle computer. He installed all the accessories while I waited, and then I was on my way with a new bike! Everything about the shopping experience and my purchase in early June was great! This past week I returned to Montlake to have my bikes 500 mile service check completed. Once again, Michael helped me out with a thorough check of the bike and adjustments. I only had to leave the bike with them for a few days, and then it was ready for pick up on the day it was promised. All of my encounters with the Montlake Bike team have been terrific. I highly recommend their shop and people.

Preface by saying Ive bought plenty of full freight gear at this shop, no problem paying MSRP. But I just walked out of the shop having paid $24.20 for two regular grade stock standard Giant brand tubes.Because of COVID I couldnt see the price before they were rung up, and then it seemed like too much of a hassle to ask for just one or cancel the transaction. These tubes are nothing special, similar available for 6 bucks online and $8 at most other shops. Bugs the heck out of me having shelled out nearly 25 bucks for 2 basic inner tubes, feel like I was gouged. Why would.i return to this store and spend $100s of dollars again like I have in the past? Ive even sent 3 people to the shop who have bought bicycles. But no more, like Alpine Hut, Montlake is now on my list of shops that wildly overprice small parts. Wont trust either with larger transactions.

I took it in for the 200-mile checkup with no issues, then came back a bit later to learn some quick brake fixes and replace the rear derailleurs. Theyre always helpful, they avoid upselling, and they treat me with respect, which isnt the norm for a woman entering a bike shop.Next month is my boyfriends birthday, and I decided to surprise him with a bike. The process was super seamless - I purchased the bike online, paid with PayPal, and got a call when it was assembled in the store. While Montlake has an excellent selection of bikes and parts (and much more in stock than what you see on the shop floor), what really makes this shop special is the people that work there. They really care for their customers, whether you are new to cycling or are very experienced. All of the staff are cyclists and cover many different cycling disciplines, so they can provide great guidance. Here is one example of their great customer service: just last Saturday I rode my bike (which I did not purchase there) to Montlake to pick up some brake pads for it. They noticed that my frame had a cracked head tube and said it would not be safe to ride home. Since it was closing time and I live 18 miles away, they loaned me a bike so I could ride home safely. This is just one of many examples I could share about how they have personally connected with and cared for me as a person, not just a customer.

1) Pay Tax, 2) Support your local bike shop, 3) Buy from Montlake Bicycle Shop.Full disclosure, Im a bike guy, so I invest in bikes. Having recently moved to Seattle, I decided to treat myself to a higher end titanium commuter / gravel bike. Notwithstanding the pro/con of Lynskey - that is the path I chose. I was going with a fully equipped Ultegra Di2 component set, and like everybody else had the choice of buying direct from Lynskey and avoiding the $500+ sales tax, or buying from my local shop. I opted for the latter for a host of reasons, but in this particular case, it is worthy of saying why. Over the years, Ive learned that the bike fit is as important as the bike itself, and rather than just doing it myself, I decided that the specialists at Montlake would be better at it. I also really like the implicit warranty that comes with the bike - i.e. first tune-up, cable tightening after initial stretch (albeit that this doesnt happen too much with Di2). Now in my case, here is where things got interesting. Lynskey true to unscrupulous form heavily discounts their bikes which made the offer too good to pass up. As I was talking with Gary at Montlake, he pointed out that he would order the Shimano components directly from Shimano because they had totally revamped the groupset, and the new one was worth the wait. Pricing was the same, just new and improved. (first improvement over buying direct from Lynskey, i got upgraded components). Second, Gary set me up on their fit machine, to ensure i got proper stem length, frame size, etc. (second improvement). My order was entered, with a 50% deposit (very sizeable, but if i ordered online, i would pay in full - so actually better). When the frame finally shipped, it turns out the components were on back order...like serious back order..... Gary suggested a novel albeit painful work-around...lets put on the components of your older bike so at least you can ride something in the rain. Albeit horrific components, at least i was riding....(moving components free of charge). Gary also set me up with a loaner rack for my panniers which actually was brand new, but not the titanium one i wanted (third & fourth improvement - got me up and riding and with a rack). As the back order months went on, I was getting fairly uncomfortable in my fit setup as I didnt do the whole pendulum, knee alignment, handle bar & saddle adjustment assuming it could wait till the new components came. 4 months in, I broke, and asked Gary if he would do the formal fit.... he did, and even changed out my stem (fifth improvement). Seven months later, the components finally arrived - Gary set me up with a loaner bike - free of charge, and took in my lynskey to do the conversion to di2. (sixth improvement). Gary said early on, at least when the new components came in, it would be like having a new bike all over again...he was right, its riding awesome (albeit my old component bar was very very low).In a nut shell: for $500 in tax, I got significantly better components, a temporary setup until the parts were in, a professional bike fit, a loaner bike....and a lot of self-guilt from the bike shop which a web site just cant give you. My principals aside, would I take this trade again...better believe it. Did they discount the bike, no! Did i get every pennys worth - damn right! These guys are awesome.
