This review is long overdue, as I have been coming here for my auto repair needs for over 10 years. Kevin and Nick are both helpful, friendly, but most importantly they are extremely knowledgeable and efficient. I appreciate the fact that they are honest, transparent and never shady, like a lot of repair shops can be, unfortunately. Anytime I’m in an urgent situation that needs to be addressed right away, or cannot take care of it myself, this is where I go and am always welcomed.

Went in for a smog, I recently moved and my car was registered in Malibu. They saw this on the registration renewal and tried to up the price to $189. I went around the corner to Smog-It, and those guys didnt try to rip me off and it was $89. I dont know if it was intentional, or a mistake, but it almost cost me $100 to use these guys. I wont consider them again.

I had a very quick and pleasant interaction bringing an old Subaru in for a star smog check. They are very pleasant & I was and in and out in less than 15 minutes. Much appreciating just the ease of service.

Quick smog check though online it says around $42 with coupons for the smog check. He ended saying $59 then I mentioned the coupon and he said $49 after bribes by saying “leave good review and I’ll take $5 off.” I ended up paying $45 when a regular smog check cost $50 at Casey’s automotive. He also kept a receipt and threw it away when I needed for my record.

Ive taken 5 cars Ive owned to Star Tech for smog checks, oil changes, and general maintenance, and have had nothing but positive experiences! They always call me to tell me an estimate before starting work (something other shops in town dont do - Another shop in town surprised me with a $700 invoice for work that wasnt pre-approved), and will also shoot straight with me on whether something needs to be done or not. I highly recommend!

I really wish I’d read the reviews before going. I was taken in by their online coupon. My car is a 2015...there’s ABSOLUTELY nothing wrong with it. Somehow during their testing white smoke was literally flowing out the exhaust and of course failed the smog test. I’m sure they saw a woman and thought they’d take advantage of me. Wonder of wonders...I take it to a different mechanic and no smoke at all. I can’t prove that they messed with my car BUT I suspect they did. Stay far far away from this place!!!!

I also went the this shop because if their online “coupon”. They do not honor it. They are higher than anywhere else. They failed my visual inspection due to a vacuum solenoid that has been repaired with epoxy and was actually functioning just fine but they didn’t even care that the emissions tested low. They just wanted to fail it so they could tack on a very expensive part that didn’t need to be replaced at all. I found the part at a junk yard and returned within two hours. I thought they would retest it for free or at least at a discount but charged me full price all over again. There are lots of good mechanics with honorable practices. Not here. This place is a real rip. Never go to them.

Took my wifes car here and was thoroughly impressed with courtesy, price and convenience. So much so that I came back the next day with my car (even though I had 6 weeks to spare on current registration) and the process was even faster. In and out in no time. Worth the drive from Goleta.

Kevin, Eddie, and the staff at Star Tech are wonderful! They went above and beyond in helping me get back on the road when my car was structurally damaged in an accident. The front axle, fender, headlamp and bumper were torn up.They repaired the front end, made sure it passed a smog test plus changed the oil and even washed it. The car looks and drives fantastic! Great service at great prices right here in Santa Barbara.

Smog check & smogged in 1/2 an hour. Great place!! Dont get much business because of their location so theres never a wait & their eager to help. These guys are awesome & should get more patronage than they do!!

Ive been here several times with all my other cars. Its been fairly easy and they have always honored their coupon. Their site has a coupon for $23 smog. Says its the cheapest smog in town. I went into the shop to smog my car. They said thats an old coupon and it doesnt work. I told them that its on their site. Showed them. They said they have to take it down and would not honor it. I should have walked out then. Instead I understood that prices have gone up and went forward. My car had been sitting for a while and it did not pass smog. They told me it might be fixed if I drove it today and tomorrow and brought it back. They charged me $38 even though the coupon said $23. AND they would charge me the same price again (second time) if I bring it back tomorrow. NO MORE. DO NOT GO TO THESE PEOPLE. I should have headed warnings, I am a loyal customer until I am no further. There are other places in this town with much better custom service.

I did several test there before since it’s near farmers market. Saw the reviews not as good, but still went. That’s my mistake. They failed my car for visual problem and charge a lot. Even charge me $38 for retest, even though the paper says $20 retest, said the paper was old. Take every opportunity to charge you more. I had to went back since they double charge the certificate. Won’t go again.

DO NOT GO HERE!!! I took my 1993 Volvo 940 in for a smog check. This was the first time in 20 years that it did not pass. They offered a free retest only if they repaired it, and quoted $85 for diagnostics with over one hour of work which often covers a simple repair. I left it for the afternoon and then received a quote of $1,100 to repair it. The price seemed very high, so I took it to my regular Volvo Mechanic who did the repair for $350. I returned to Star for the free retest. They refused, saying that the $85 for one hour of work did not count as a repair. The owner said they make their money doing repairs and not doing smog tests, which explains the excessive $1,100 quote for repairs. GM Automotive will do a free retest without strings, so I have taken 3 of our cars there now and will never go back to Star-Tech again. Beware of Star-Tech... they are out to milk you for expensive repairs.

We just got our out of state car smog checked at Star Tech. Service was very friendly. I expected the car to pass as it has been well maintained and it did. Cost just over $50 and was given a $10 off coupon that I had been offered on the phone before coming in. Happy to recommend this shop.

I had been here before with no problem. This time, I brought a coupon that clearly stated free re-test. First they wanted to charge me more than the coupon stated. Then, even though my car actually passed the emissions test, it failed due to an easily remediable computer issue. When they informed me that I would have to pay again and they would not honor the coupon I left. And I wont be back. I dont appreciate deceptive business practices.

Came in for a smog check, got in right away and took less than 10 minutes. The staff was great and Smog check was only $22.99 plus dmv fees, so $35 total if you mention the deal. Would definitely recommend and will come back here!

They broke my trust when they tried to change a part they did not exist on my vehicle. I called my mechanic back home and he diagnosed and corrected the problem by phone any ordered not to touch anything on the vehicle.The real problem was the plastic cap on the belt was rattling . It still cost me $200.

If you might fail a smog test, dont go here! Instead of doing a quick visual and informing you that it wont pass, theyll run it through it and at the end say, I saw right away it was going to fail, and it did! Thatll be $90. But the re-test is free if you pay $500 to fix it. I was livid! And told the tech he was a crook. Take your business to Richardo at Santa Barbara Smog Shop. Hell help you get your car ready to pass smog BEFORE testing it.On the other hand, if your car will 100% pass smog. Take it here. Theyre fast because no one wants to do business with them. :P

I dont normally write reviews but this place is actually horrible. After taking my car to receive a smog check it failed reason being there was supposedly a crack in the head gasket. They then quoted me $700.00 charge to replace it and additional 180.00 for labor. After these bogus quotes I went to 2 other Smog Check places that couldnt find anything wrong with my vehicle and even said when i pointed out the crack said it was legal. Now they wouldnt pass me because this place already failed me so they just told me to come back in a few days and they will pass me. So this wasnt just a waste of money but a waste of time.. Dont Go

This place is a total scam and I will report to Better Business. My wife went in for smog test and our car failed, they sold my wife a gas tank lid saying that helps with mileage as it’s common for vapor leaks. What the F!Wanted to do a test for $140 to see what they could find out. Right! So we took it took it elsewhere and they told us what the issue looks like. We will get it fixed and take back to the other place.I will be paying Star Tech a visit and getting my $18 for my gas lid. Seriously, what BS are they pulling.Unfortunately we did not read the reviews before.

These guys failed my car s smog check for visual inspection. than offed to find the problem for a lot of money. I took the car to the Toyota dealer ship the next day and It pass Smog Inspection with no problems. These guys lure you in with a cheap price than find problems to fix when nothing was wrong.

I took my car for a smog check here and when it didnt pass, they quoted me 85 bucks to take a look at it and then over $400 to fix it. I decided to take it elsewhere to see if this is a decent price. not only did the other guy find out the problem in under 5 minutes, he also quoted me $200 with labor and parts and when I mentioned that previous quote, he laughed and said that it was ridiculous. I would not recommend taking your car here.

This place is really good at what they do. Their mechanic knows what he is doing. Everyone there is nice.

I was really worried about my truck passing smog, so I came to these guys and explained my concern. We did a pretest($30) and it passed so they went ahead and did the actual SMOG Inspection($47) and it passed with flying colors. The Certificate was $8.25 and the E-File was $3.75. All worth it in the end as I have another two years free of smog tests. Thank you Star Tech. Very professional, very fast, very easy. I could not be a happier customer.
