Paul and his team have been incredible to work with the the ring is just gorgeous. He worked with our budget to design something that is so beautiful and feels unique while also being timeless. We then bought our wedding bands here and also have had a couple repairs done and everything has been seamless and done perfectly. I wanted a fully customized ring for my then girlfriend as i wanted it as special as possible. We went through what i wanted, to what i had envisioned to put into the ring, and he made it happen. Amazing collection of custom ring designs and their Own curated selection of antique and modern designs. Originally I was brought into the store for a antique diamond wedding band and they had such a great assortment. Eventually I thought of them again when I wanted to custom make a Montana sapphire ring. Rika and Fiona were super patient and helpful and were able to piece together my thoughts about the custom designs and were truly so helpful. What great customer service! I had reached out to a number of other jewelers inquiring about Montana sapphires but Rika was the only one to contact jewelers about different shapes and shades, and I really loved my experience with her. I’ll be back here soon for future high quality jewelry purchases!

Ive come into Appelblom several times to browse the engagement rings, both with my partner and with a girlfriend. Ive also had 2 pieces of jewelry repaired (missing melee stone and broken necklace chain), and Im very pleased with the workmanship, turnaround time, and pricing.I have to give a special recognition to Rika, who made us feel so welcome and taken care of during our browsing sessions. The anniversary ring that my husband bought for me for our 20th wedding anniversary lost a diamond. I had worn this ring everyday since he gave it to me, and we would have been married 41 years this month. My husband passed away almost 2 years ago now, so this ring is priceless to me now. I took the ring into a jeweler in Redwood City where I live, and after keeping it for 3 weeks, they told me that the ring was just too worn, and if they replaced the diamond, they couldnt guarantee that I wouldnt lose more diamonds out of it. I search the web, and found good reviews with Appelblom Jewelry in San Mateo. I took a chance and drove up there with my ring. The minute I walked into the store and talked with the wonderful people there, I felt like I had come to the right place. I explained the situation to them. They were very caring, and put my mind at ease that they could fix my ring. After having it a week, they called to tell me what the other jeweler had, that the ring was really worn down, but they suggested that they could fix the ring by remaking it using the same gold and diamonds that are currently in it. It would look identical to my original ring, and the cost was very reasonable too. I went for it, and Im so glad I did! The ring came out looking just like new, and should last me another 20 years now! They also fixed a broken prong on my wedding ring, and cleaned and polished both rings up like new. It made me cry when I saw them. I am more then pleased with this jeweler, and Ill be back to them in the future. I will also refer all my friends to them too. They were caring, gave me really quick service, and just all around great! Thank you!

I was looking for a jeweler to establish a life-long partnership with. After completing one project with them, it is clear they need adjustments in their attention to communication with all clients. I ended up feeling like my jobs didn’t mean much to them in spite of how engaged they were in discussion initially. Here’s what happened:I needed my grandmother’s wedding resized to fit my hand. I had been told I could pick it up the following Tuesday. I then called that Tuesday as I assumed someone would call to confirm. Not only did they initially tell me I wasn’t in their system (!) (+ they had my grandmother’s ring I their possession), they then told me someone was supposed to call me the prior week to address another element I had wanted done to the ring. So my ring sat, not worked on, and nothing communicated to me, and possibly even my name and belongings not in their system, for over a week because of a lack of attention to detail and poor communication.Second challenge: I had brought in an heirloom necklace that I wanted to redesign. They were very interested in it, took photos and notes, my email, and told me they’d run questions by their goldsmith the following Tuesday. The woman didn’t follow up within two weeks, and while her colleague said later that she would indeed follow up with me, it’s now been three weeks and I’ve heard nothing. Do they not want my business? What gives, people?Either way, I’m out! And I’m on to finding a jeweler who respects my time and my possessions and who will value a life-long business relationship.

When I first found this place I thought it had the most unique pieces Ive seen, has a family and friends vibe, and I didnt feel any pressure to buy. They met with me multiple times and shipped in heart-shaped diamonds not in-store for me to see in person, they even suggested Moissanite as a cheaper alternative to get the look I wanted for less. At the end of the day I decided to keep an heirloom diamond that was a round shape and they custom made it to have a heart shaped setting, something everyone else said was impossible to do! They were super excited to hear the follow-up details of our wedding and I truly feel like I gained friends in the process! They are all so sweet and genuinely good people! Best jewelry buying experience I have ever had, a special thanks to Aurora and Fiona!

Friendly and very helpful staff, excellent customer service. Had to resize an engagement ring that we got from a different store. After a consultation with Jennifer from Appelblom, I decided to go with sizing beads instead, to prevent the stone from moving, and glad I did. The sizing beads keep my ring in place (this wasnt the case with just resizing the ring). My ring was ready for pickup a day ahead of schedule. Im happy for the other customers who had 5-star experiences, but what we encountered was extremely upsetting and disappointing. I waited very long to write this, but I just feel compelled to share our experience, so as to protect fellow customers who are looking to make their engagement rings without heartbreak or delay.Initial consultation (Week 1, late January)My boyfriend and I went to Appelblom on an appointment to have an engagement ring custom-made. My boyfriend had previously been in contact with Jennifer about the design he wanted: he had the design drawn out on Powerpoint, sent it over email, and the appointment was for a formal face-to-face, get sized and decide on materials. Sizing was quick and conversation was pleasant. My boyfriend then stayed to discuss the finer details of the exact design (rose petal-shaped prongs) to make sure that everything was communicated. I would like to emphasize that during that meeting, he was also very specific about the designs we did not want, because we had done our homework on what was already on the market. Jennifer verbally confirmed and repeated our request of what-not-to-make. We paid Appelblom a $150 fee to draw a CAD for our design that was unique and not available on the market.Email exchange 1 (Week 3):Jennifer emailed us to tell us (I quote from the email) I have spoken with our goldsmith about your ring. He understands that style that you want. The photos and drawings were helpful... the structure is too delicate and will not hold up..would need to be hand made, so you would not be able to see at CAD. (He could make a CAD, but it wouldnt make a good casting and would probably break because it is too thin. We were understanding of the limitation, were OK with a hand-made ring, but asked for a CAD to be drawn anyway, so that we know what were getting. In the same exchange, she/the goldsmith recommended a completely different design, which we gently declined because it was completely against our style. The email exchange concluded with an agreement that a CAD will be drawn up and sent over soon.Email exchange 2 (Week 4):We were sent a preliminary CAD, which was 1. a design that was already on the market, 2. the exact design that we specifically declined during our 1st consultation, and 3. was tulip-shaped. Giving her the benefit of doubt, we communicated our specifications for a rose again, referred them to our drawings, and waited for the next update.Email exchange 3 (Week 5):This time, she sent over a CAD of a ring with chrysanthemum-shaped petals. At that point, we were starting to feel very disappointed because our instructions were clear on a ring would have rose-shaped petals, and it was difficult to see how a rose could be interpreted into different flowers. We responded with suggestions on how to design the petal layering as well (because that was not done in the 2nd CAD as requested). We were told that the ring will need to be hand-made, with no CAD, and to decide on whether we want to hand-make the ring or settle on any of the CADs that were sent. At the end of this email chain, we decided to ask for our money back, because they have neither fulfilled our requests in any form requested, nor seemed to understand our requests at all. Weve contacted them twice about this, and still have not received any reply.Overall impressions/Conclusions:- This shop and goldsmith have trouble understanding clients requests/specifications.- They are overly confident in claiming understanding when they clearly dont. We worked hard with them about communicating what we wanted, but time and again we got the impression that they did not understand what we said, and did not clarify when they were confused either.- We felt scammed. We gave very explicit instructions (which Jennifer confirmed in-person) about the on-market designs we did not want, yet they sent us a CAD of the exact design off the shelf. We wondered if they were hoping we won’t notice.Update in June: received our money back after being contacted by the owner

Paul and the wonderful ladies represent, by far, one of the premier Jewelers. You enter a inviting and intimate setting where you can take a seat and ask questions about the variety of items they have one display. My favorites are their rings. They have innovative new pieces and a growing number of wonderful vintage items at the store AND Etsy.They have also helped repair a very important ring. Several Times... It wasnt perfect the first time around but they took another shot and it was perfect. That lets me know that they understand that the customers opinion always comes first.They have cool events you can go to. Take the time to visit the next time youre in Downtown San Mateo window shopping or wanting to splurge on something nice. You wont be disappointed.

Cannot recommend Mr. Appelblom and co enough! The staff here is very personable and knowledgeable. They dont give you any of the high pressure treatment you might find at other places and genuinely want you to find what is best for you. By far the best experience either I or my fiancee have had jewelry shopping.

I have been going to Paul for a few years now and when I needed to fix my engagement ring setting his team was very patient with me and gave me so many amazing options! They worked with me for a few months and I not once felt rushed! I absolutely love the new setting! Appelblom also has an amazing selection of necklaces and the prices are incredible! Two of my most treasured rings were tarnished by unbalanced chemicals in the hot tub. I took them to Appelbloms jewelry. Paul, the owner, treated me like a special guest. He told me he could fix my rings, he discovered a crack in one of them that I hadnt noticed, and then said he would make them like new. He finished them ahead of scheduled, called me personally to let me know they were ready, and when I picked them up, I nearly cried because they looked so beautiful again.
