Books, books, and more books. This book store was probably the best organized non-chain book store Ive ever been to. Great selection and very nice staff, they had back up masks and hand sanitizer ready to go. Prices seem pretty reasonable but overall the selection of books is what I was most impressed with, especially if youre a history fan and enjoy aged books. I will definitely be returning when back in the area.
Dont take your books here expecting to get much. They only get the best ones and pay almost nothing for them. They do have a great selection of used books but theyre not cheap to buy.
Great store. Friendly employees. I love browsing their collection and finding new gems each time I visit.
Amazing collection. If you are a history fan, this is the place to go. The Manager was super sweet and very informative.
Awesome selection. Collectors will love it. I did. Lady at the counter was very nice and knowledgeable. I will be back.
Was here back in 2007 and up to now this place still has the best collection of rare and unique books in town. A must visit for bibliophiles.
I cant. I love books, but this is not a place for me. The organization was loose. There were so many books, and it was hard to see them all. Some were stacked on the floors. Others were cover facing out all over the shelf so that you cant see the spines of the books behind them.Horror books I guess are limited to Stephen King and Bentley Little. They dont carry romance, not even paranormal romance. They do love westerns, mysteries, and history. So if that is your thing, be prepared to spend all day standing, squatting, and sitting on the floor to look at all of it.
I go here and Antiquarian Book Mart for the best book buying experience in town.
I can spend hours looking through these books 📚
Great organization and selection. Helpful staff.
Helpful. Didnt have the book I was looking for, but found it online for me. Very nice place and had lots of books separated by genre.
Wow, what an incredible selection....40,000 books; and so organized. I never leave empty handed.
Love the place its well organized and clean, love to read books here.
Awesome place and people! So many cool books!
Very cute a good size bookstore doesnt have alot of parking, I parked in the front of the building. Nice and personable staff got a classic childrens book for a good price and got a book bag with no charge which was very nice
One of a kind.
Very well organized, great variety, great staff!
I love this place. It’s chock-full of books of all kinds: used paperbacks, leather bound editions, signed first editions, reference materials. It’s wonderful. Located in what was clearly a residence at one point, each room of Cheever Books is full to overflowing with books. Prices are very reasonable. The people who work there are friendly and helpful. I wish I could go here every day (but my wallet is glad I can’t).
Friendly staff...wide variety of books
Awesome local spot, staff was great and so many cool books. Go here if you love old finds or combing through stacks for something unique. Lots of leatherbound and hardcover. Overall loved this place.
Wonderful little bookshop. Many old and rare books. Very broad selection. If youre burnt-out on the typical selection in a regular bookstore, this is the place to visit. Friendly bet that theyll have a book that sparks your interest that youve never seen before.
A VERY PERSONAL PLACE TO SHOP. MY DAUGHTER WAS LOOKING FOR A FICTION BOOK FOR SCHOOL, SHE DIDNT FIND A BOOK SUITABLE FOR SCHOOL BUT LIKED THE PLACE. I LOVED THE FACT THAT THEY CARRIED THE CLASSICS IN TIP TOP SHAPE
Quaint old bookstore with lots of leather bound books both old and new. Theres always a sale going on, so I make it a point to stop by and grab a book before heading to the airport. Wonderful service make sure to stop by and say hello!
Wonderful place - this is the ideal used bookstore. Ive found some really unique books here that were priced fairly. While I love HBP this place just has a totally different vibe, like a place you could get lost in for hours.
I love this place so much! Always fun and interesting finds, its like moving through a maze of precarious book stacks. Just delightful, always recommend.
Wow!!! This is an absolutely enchanting bookstore. You will every topic you can think of. They have 1st Ed books along with older versions. History Art Literature Science Kids etc Cheever Books 📚 has it. This is definitely going to be my favorite spot in San Antonio.
Great bookstore! Busting at the seams with old books and new books of every subject. Any bibliophile will like this shop!
One of the best booksellers in Texas. I always stop there when I am in San Antonio.
Good selection. I particularly enjoy being left to myself to peruse. One of my favorite stores in the city.
I went in today in spite of the bad reviews, looking for a book I had in my childhood which I wanted to replace. Although they didnt have the book, the lady knew exactly what I was asking for. She even directed me to an online search (other than Amazon!) and pulled up the search. She was extremely pleasant and helpful.
Fantastic used bookstore. My favorite one in San Antonio! I try to make a stop there during every trip.
Signed first editions, leather-bound, rare medical texts, limited printings of historical accounts. These are the kinds of treasures that I never expected to find inside when I drove past the bookstore. It looks like every other used bookstore, but thats far from the truth. While browsing I came across a signed, first edition, leather-bound copy of Alistair Cookes speeches. I work with a West Point graduate Army physician who was thrilled to hear about the find and purchased it the next day. I myself found a leather-bound collectors edition copy of Faust translated by Alice Raphael. The prices are also VERY reasonable and competitive with what you can find on Amazon. When you walk in, turn left, and say goodbye to the next few hours of your day. Or, if you have deep pockets, take a look at the books around the front desk counter to your right (do handle with care though, some are very, very old).
Best place on earth....one of them. Cheap books cant beat that deal.
Wonderful selection of books! The store could use some cleaning and TLC, but this is a place that loves books.
Super sweet owner / operator. Cozy atmosphere. Makes you want to read every book in the store. It is a real bookstore. Loved it, cant wait to go back.
Friendly, helpful, knowledge staff! Great selection! Good prices! Nice place!
Really nice staff and an interesting selection of books :)
On the suggestion of a friend, my wife and I went to Cheever Books. Let me start by saying that my wife is handicapped and in a wheelchair. The first thing we noticed was that there is no wheelchair ramp in the front of the building. Its an older building with a set of stairs up to the main entrance. We drove around the back, and noticed what looked like a ramp to the back door, but there was a big sign on the door that said Not An Entrance. I parked, left my wife in the car, and went around the front and went inside. The store was dark, cluttered, and even if I could get my wifes wheelchair inside, there was no room to push her in it. The place had disorganized piles of books stacked along the sides of every aisle, if you could call them aisles, and very little walking room, let alone wheelchair room. There was only one other customer in the store, at least I assume it was a customer, she was standing off to the side looking through some books. There was one woman behind the counter. I began to ask about the ramp in the back. I stated that my wife was handicapped and in a wheelchair, and wanted to know if the ramp in the back was a wheelchair entrance. The woman behind the counter told me that it wasnt an entrance, and that their store is not wheelchair friendly. I promptly told her, in that case, you do not want my business. And I left. I have no idea what kind of a bookstore they actually are, but I can tell you one thing, with that kind of customer service, I have no intention of ever going back there to find out. There are a lot of bookstores in San Antonio, and we frequent many of them, but Cheever wont be on that list.
Was in the area visiting family and one of them told me about this store. I instantly fell in love, such a great and varied selection of books! I would highly recommend this store.
This is my favorite bookstore in town (and I have been to almost every one in Bexar County, with the exception of the multiple storefronts for the chain stores). It is centrally located, always peaceful and quiet with an extensive and diverse selection. The couple who run the place have always been friendly and helpful... and I suspect that those who claim otherwise have a personal deficiency of manners; you have to show respect to receive it in turn. No there is not a public restroom and the books are sorted by type, and thats it. If you are looking for a particular book they will help you find it in my experience. The charm of this place is that it is like a real book store, in that it is an adventure to peruse through the shelves and stacks of books to find a literary treasure. They have everything from $.99 childrens books to rare leather bound volumes worth hundreds.
Great place, very helpful service.
I went in there today and nicely asked the woman that runs the place if she could help me find a book, she seemed very bothered by the small favor and just showed me where the fiction literature section was and very rudely said look for it in that room!, well everything was disorganized and so I was not able to find what I was looking for so I just left. I will not be returning to that place again and its simply because I dont want to encounter that bitter lady again.
It was so unique, lots of hard to find and out of print books. Plus it had that amazing old book smell.
Wonderful bookstore!
I went here last week and was blown away by the stock of amazing books they had! The owner is a sweet and very helpful woman and I managed to get all the books I wanted at great prices.
Very cool, lots of books, if you like to read and youre near by, you gotta stop in.
Very knowledgeable and helpful staff. This place is AMAZING. Do yourself a favor and stop in, check it out!
Fantastic assortment of books, including amazing first editions.
Wonderful old Bookstore. Can find rare books there.
Super sweet lady who after me and my daughter we looking at books told us of a great hamburger place to try.
My favorite used book store in the area. More old, rare or obscure books than other stores Ive been to.
Smells like decaying pages which is a plus for most. Lots to sort through and anyone could find something to enjoy with a bit of searching.
Love this spot, knowledgeable owner with some older sought after books...
Quiet, charming, gorgeous and topped with the sweetest charm of an owner broadway knows
