I get coffee here all the time and I absolutely love their coffee! However:There is an older gentleman that works at the Avent ferry location with short grey hair and glasses . Don’t bother asking him a question, he will give you a blunt, rude reply. I tried asking if they sold beanies (obviously with their logo) and he replied “NO WHY WOULD WE?” And just walked away before I could even reply. I assumed because they sold shirts and mugs it would be a possibility that they sold beanies. Guess I was wrong… just looking to support a local business
The way employees are treated there should be illegal. I multiple times caught employees mis treating each other, and the fact that you can force a person to wipe the same counter that is already super clean is so dumb. They are all trying to make it appear that they are doing something because there are cameras recording, and thats the dumbest thing. If you have an opportunity to sit and chill, LET YOUR EMPLOYEES CHILL.
Always great service and a great cup of coffee when we stop in to pick up more bags of their beans. Love Cup of Joe!!!!
Good coffee. Bad service. Order same drink, same size at Hillsborough St. location and its $5.36. At Avent Ferry, guy tries to charge me $6.17. The adult on duty helped the guy at the cash register understand what I ordered and what it should cost. Nobody apologized for the error.🙄
Remember that coffee shop you used to go to where the coffee, the people, and the space were definitely not designed by focus groups in corporate offices? Where the knew what you usually ordered, and didnt take all day to make it?Its still there. Come check it out.
Good coffee and a good morning nosh. More cream cheese with the bagels would be good
The daily specials and prices are very good. Staff has always been nice. Not the best interior but has a nice seating area right outside. No issues with the coffee or tea, low prices are the best part
Great coffee, quick and friendly service, quaint seating area adorned with coffee decor
Good coffee good atmosphere for meeting people to have conversations with.
Tasty seasonal lattes, mouth watering bagels and great black coffee! Very rusty looking indoor seating and outdoor seating available as well.Movie theater beside this coffee spot, nice food options nearby too.Near to main campus and not far away from centennial!
You get to settle for the simple things in life to find happiness. Cupajoe is home and that is something Starbucks can’t replace. Plz upgrade the internet. Please bring back opening late. And please keep it protected until you feel it’s ok to open the indoor back. We’re waiting
This place is definitely one worth trying. Its not like a typical chain coffee shop and has its own unique vibe. The coffee was warm and delicious. They have several methods of coffee prep to choose from and a variety of specialty drinks that may be lost on some people, but my husband and I thought it was pretty cool to have so many options to choose from. If youre a fan of giant cups of coffee - this place is a great deal! It has its own parking lot, which is a plus for downtown, but it was still a little tricky to get in and out of.
Been going here for over 24 yrs. Their Wired Wednesday deals gives you great drinks at a great price. They have some sort of deal most days...
They closed in the Spring (2020) and rethought the space. Made a sensible adjustment to traffic flow. Enhanced safety measures for we customers, and their staff. I really loved my Wednesday latte. Thanks yall!
Literally one of the best spots in the world, so friendly and caring over EVERYONE, not just certain types of people. Been goin here for about, I dont really remember, its been 5 or more years, so many good memories.I live in Smithfield and even though its not open inside I still like just getting one of their teas and just sitting outside and then maybe head over to the Dorothea Dix area and walk around during the day, totally worth the driver, no matter how far you are.
One of the best coffee shops in the area! The shop is extremely welcoming and has lots of outdoor seating. They also have a wide variety of menu items. Not only is the coffee great, but the smoothies are delicious as well.
This is my 3rd place for sure. Coffee and really all their products are consistently delicious and correct. They are always cleaning, if not helping a customer.
I was working in the area and the smell drew me in. I normally have my own coffee made at home from the fresh market but this stuff they serve here is amazing. The bold aroma was well matched by the flavor, I will definitely be returning to this wonderful place. I cant wait to see what its like when fully opened.
Great coffee, great ways to social distance and still see people.
I love this place. I like that they are keeping customers safe by enforcing mask wearing. The owner is very nice and the coffee is great!
Just the best coffee around period! In my humble opinion
I miss the days when you could order coffee and not have to wear a hazmat suit.
Great outside atmosphere, good coffee, and enjoyable pastries. I usually end up staying for hours and watching the world go by, as the regular patrons are friendly and non-interfering. The register can be a bit awkward at times due to their ordering process, but this is a minor complaint.
Great atmosphere, covered outdoor seating. Excellent coffee very reasonably priced.
I tried Cup-A-Joe in Mission Valley for the first time and it was really good. It’s a cute little coffee serving really great coffee.
Great coffee...the trainwreck was not just a trainwreck! It was DISASTROUSLY tasty...going back for another.
I’ve only been here once with a friend but absolutely loved it and would definitely come back. The atmosphere is great for friends, studying, or just grab and go. The coffee was delicious and the people working very friendly and available to help. Cozy, comfy, and local!
Their coffee is really good. They roast beans inside and you can watch when they are doing it. The pastries are always fresh and taste fantastic. Atmosphere is great for focusing and getting work done. Each time I have been there the place is full so that should tell you something. They make a great latte also! Staff is very friendly and down to earth.
Ive enjoyed great coffee and breakfast/lunch since 1997. A local treasured place for great coffee hot or cold. Owner has been the same since opening and you usually find him at 1 of the 2 locations. The coffee is also great to bring home!If you want to catch a movie at the Avent Ferry location I think you can still take their coffee into the movie.Must stop there- they have more than just coffee to drink; fruity/icy drinks also I just prefer the coffee ones.
A little older, like all of the places in this shopping center. They have excellent coffee and espresso drinks. The pastries are fresh and the service is good. Fairly good selection on breakfast sandwiches. I love going here to get work done!
Some people like their coffeehouses starched and orderly, and the staff lined up like little culinary soldiers. Not me. I like personality in my coffee and in my coffee houses. Cup O Joe serves an awesome cup of in-house roasted java in your choice of paper cup or mug. Details matter! Once you step inside, you feel like youre coming home or entering someplace very familiar. The staff is warm and the decor is in elegant disarray. Jeff, the owner is charming and reminds me why I love drinking coffee with friends...and making new ones.
Great selection of beans to go, much more than the usual options. The shop smelled delicious and the coffee tasted great. Plenty of available seating both inside and outside even mid morning on a weekday
I love this place, but they need to know that no one likes their baked goods and they need to stop trying to push them on people! Its awkward how intense they are about it and everything else is fantastic.
Cup-a-Joe has great dark roast coffee, and a great variety of coffee beans to take home. The breakfast and lunch menu is ok, and they always temp you with fresh baked treats.Beyond the drinks and eats, I really like Cup-a-Joes deliberately subversive feel. I like to hear the constant buzz of international languages among the patrons, the indie music playing in the background, the grungy decor, and the punk look and demeanor of the staff. In sum, for me and many others, Cup-a-Joe is the irreverent counter-culture bubble into which we escape as a reprieve from our otherwise mundane Monday to Friday lives! Conveniently, the coffee is good, the baked goods are tempting, and the eats are fine.
A lot of their drinks are very flat. The Voltaire, a espresso/ hot chocolate drink is more akin to instant coffee with a packet of hot cocoa. The latte have no milk foam, and are typically served in a glass which quickly heats up to a temperature thats too hot to hold. I come here because its one of the only coffee shops within walking distance, but prefer to drive elsewhere for better coffee.
Coffee is strong and flavorfull! No extra charge for soy or almond milk. These guys are dedicated to the perfect espresso shot and are quick! Prices are reasonable and there are different drinks for sale during the week. There are also food options aside from the normal sweet treats like muffins and cookies to balance out the caffeine!
Cup-A-Joe has the best and most inexpensive lattes and coffee. 3 shot grande iced or hot lattes are typically one to two dollars less than Dunkin or Starbucks. And they have a great team that makes it fast. Even when they are busy, typically in and out under 5 minutes. Typical visit is less than that. Great job!
Pretty good coffee spot with very good prices. The cold brew is my favorite. I agree with other reviewers that the upselling is way too overly aggressive to the point of awkwardness, but I don’t let it ruin my day. Otherwise, convenient location and always incredibly fast service, even with a bit of a line.
Great coffee spot! Everytime I go in its quick and my drink is delicious. Staff is super polite too.
Good service, spacious with numerous tables, coffee smells And tastes so good, and parking in the back!
Good coffee, staff mostly friendly, atmosphere lousy. The chairs are mostly broken and the tables are all wobbly.
This is my favorite place to go study and drink a chai tea. Great atmosphere and I love that they support local radio!
A good quick cup of coffee in the morning, and a reasonable place to hang out and work. Food is good, though selection is a little limited. Interior is a little cramped, especially during the busiest parts of the year when students are there working.
Amazing espresso drinks, coffee is good, and the beans are all I get for use at home. The 100% Columbian beans are a nice mix of medium body but full flavor. Love Cup A Joe.
Cool place
The quality is as good as their Hillsborough St location, but it is much smaller. The good news is that parking is much better. There is also a lot more outdoor seating. This is a fine place to meet a friend for a chat or just to hang out and get some work done.
Their coffee is decent, but the aggressive up-selling and the petty signs posted around the shop make for a generally unpleasant experience. At every point of the sale staff try and up-sell you, from pushing to get a larger size, or add a shot, or some other modification. Let me order what I want to order! While I understand that the owners may have a problem with people using their shop as a “third space,” posting signs about it on every available surface just makes for an unwelcoming atmosphere. Despite the fact that this coffeeshop is the closest one to my house, I drive past this place to visit other coffeeshops.
Cup a Joe is great! Ive been going there for morning coffee for 5 years. They have really good hot chocolate too.
Love this place. They can whip up an iced coffee in no time. Far better coffee than that national chain.
Good coffee and a fun atmosphere, I just wish that there were more places to sit and that it had updated surfaces.. its starting to look work down!
I enjoy this place but am extremely annoyed by the constant upselling on beans/baked good. Even if you politely try to avoid it by saying “I’d like X, and that’s all for today” they still press you to buy beans or cookies. The last thing I want first thing in the morning is to be hassled to buy more than what I intednded.
Went there yesterday afternoon. This place was recommended to us, but it was a disappointing experience. As soon as we walked in we felt very unwelcome. The people behind the counter were basically just glaring at us while we were trying to decide what to get. My cousin got a mocha and it was the worst coffee we’ve ever had. She forgot to ask for almond milk in hers and offered to buy a new one and the girl that helped her gave her such a snarky attitude. The next one she got was equally as terrible. Worst coffee shop experience ever.
Wonderful food. And great coffee. A good breakfast/ evening snack place
What a great place to enjoy a great cup of java and meet friends. Great service and friendly staff.
Great coffee shop. Relaxed and unpretentious. Its a great spot for studying and socializing.
This place is cheap because the drinks are made weirdly and the staff is rude and incompetent. They are short with you when you ask a question about something on the menu, and look at you like youre crazy when you try to modify your drink to your taste. The location on Hillsborough is a little better as far as service goes. For a few more dollars at Starbucks, youll get a well-made drink and nice staff that actually enjoy their job and will modify your drink without giving you an attitude.
Awesome place to hang out. Great coffee. Very friendly. Loved it
Beyond the best !! Buy local and support your local coffee houses !
Great environment. a lot of choices. workers are nice
Omgoodness! The latte here was delicious! The staff is amazing!
I meet here a lot because of its location. I love the beat up mismatched furniture basement look, and the coffee is great. I would give it a 5 if they (i) stopped the incessant upselling as others have mentioned, and (ii) got ApplePay or at least an iPad/Square POS. The staff would certainly make more money this way.
If you are looking for a campus coffee shop, this one is right next to the theater and always has a great cup ready. I prefer DEC Alf not the cappuccino is pretty good too.
Great food and fantastic chai! Cup A Joe has been there for cram study sessions and as a refuge from icy January weather. My one complaint though would be service. They (the employees) have been given a set of rules to give customers and will jump to catch you before you’ve even done anything. On a rainy weekday during the semester, my boyfriend and I had just gotten smoothies from a place nearby, quickly finished them, and decided we needed some coffee to warm us up. We were going to throw our cups away once inside the Hillsborough St. location, but wanted to get out of the rain asap. Before even crossing the threshold, an employee snappily stopped us and informed us that outside food and drinks were not allowed. She would not even let us inside. So much for our intention of spending money to support your business I guess?
Great coffee. Friendly staff who learn what you like. Indoor & year-round outdoor seating.
Tall iced latte - loved the flavor! if this place was not a bit far away from my place, I would definitely come here every day for their coffee!
Decent coffee, terrible customer service. They freak out if you dont know what to pick from their giant menu and if you try and set your stuff down at a table before purchasing something they stare at you until youbwalk up and rudely as for your order. Dont even try and ask a question about their menu theyll be rude and do everything they can to make you feel like you shouldnt be there if you arent a regular. But good atmosphere and good local people.
Good prices, great drink selection, good coffee environment. Fast and efficient.
My number one coffee stop in the entire city. Great staff, great drinks, great weekly specials. All around great spot.
LOVE Cup A Joe! The coffee here is delicious!
Online menu doesnt match in store menu
Great staff and coffee! Their baked goods are also delicious and their themed days are always a fun way to explore beverages you may not have tried!
A generous 4. Get a solid capo to go with your grunge. Sitting outside may seem appealing, but beware the smokers, a cup o speciality.
Seems run down, but we just tell ourselves its hipster. Very clean and wonderful staff.Great cup of coffee.Look for Pat.
Great local run coffee shop. They take pride in there quality. The Voltaire (hot chocolate & expresso) is 🔥
Best coffee spot in town. Super fast service and good specials on weds and Thursdays for lattes. Strong fast and decisions coffee- thats what you get at cup of joe
Great local coffee shop. My latte was made perfectly. Will definitely return.
Great selection of freshly roasted coffees, delicious pastries, and a local dive coffee shop feel. Great for coffee with friends, working, or just waking up in the morning.
Espresso is only so-so and made correctly about 25% of the time. Staff is made up of college students who clearly have more important things to worry about. If you’re over 25, you’ll feel awkward. Overall, more unwelcoming and inappropriate to a coffee person than Asheville is to Republicans and about as pretentious.
Best local coffee shop in Raleigh IMO. The Hong Kong tea is my favorite. It reminds me of the tea we used to get from roadside tea stalls in India.
Good coffee, a bit pricey. Fun spot to hang out and talk.
I absolutely love both locations. I run at 5am from the Hillsborough street location 2 to 3 times a week and really enjoy getting my lite ice chai tea with almond milk after a 5 mile run, also the morning I dont run Ill stop at the Mission Valley location. The best service and the best Chai tea in the Triangle!
Need to reopen indoor seating.
A lot of space to sit. Good coffee. Try bubble tea.
Good coffee, friendly staff, Wi-Fi and food options
Been a patron of this spot for almost four years now. Great coffee, tasty snacks and breakfast sandwiches. Very eclectic radio courtesy of WKNC, NC States radio station. Artistic / very weird decor. My favorite coffee in Raleigh, although the WiFi isnt always friendly to me.
Iced grande vtrain best drink NA 10/10 would do again
Great coffee!
Their coffee is alright but overrated in my opinion. They have pretty decent weekly specials though
I like their mocha but their espresso is a tad too strong for a regular coffee drinker.
Wifes favorite coffee place. Always happy to see you!
Great coffee. Good prices.
Good coffee, good prices, good atmosphere but not as good as the one on Hillsborough
This is like the C-o-J on Hillsboro, a bit smaller.Pros: staff is a little less pretentious than the OG Joes. You get your coffee about forty-five minutes faster here, too.Cons: Not enough Zappa posters on the wall.
Awesome service
Homey environment, excellenct service, really good coffee at a really good price.
I have been to cup a joe in chapel hill and it is far superior. This one is fine, but the atmosphere is hodge podge and dingy, with the coffee being equal to any other area location (prefer Port City Java locations on campus).
The vibe is distinctly hipster but the coffee is fantastic and the atmosphere is casual and unassuming. Will be back.
Not as nice as the Hillsborough cafe but ok.
