Buttery popover, great and cozy atmosphere, wonderful service - my time at Popovers On the Square was the highlight of my Portsmouth trip.I got the scrambled eggs in a popover with American cheese - it came out hot, the eggs were silky smooth, and it popover was light and flaky. The dining room (and bathroom) was super clean, modern in decor, and well organized / COVID-safe. Everyone I interacted with was super pleasant and happy to be there. I was there with my puppy and was able to enjoy sitting outside. It was pretty busy, but I didnt have to wait for a table outdoors.I do wish I got some more to try, so Ill definitely be coming back the next time i am in Portsmouth.
Very busy on a Sunday, July 4th. I had an egg 🍳 and cheese 🧀 with coffee ☕ and, I think 🤔an apple 🍎 turnover. I didnt see 🙈 a list of available breakfast pastries. The pastries and 🎂 cakes that were shown looked tempting.Service was friendly but divided. I placed my order for everything together. But, they were brought out separately. A young girl was in the middle of the dining room while my coffee ☕ and pastry was at the counter. I did find a window seat with a great views of Market Square.I recommend a visit.
One of my absolute favorite places to sit and enjoy a breakfast, lunch or dinner. Wonderful location and really tasty food. The popovers are amazing and I highly recommend picking up a dessert as well. The clam chowder is one of my favorites. Always worth the trip to Popovers!
Good vibes and great food. Pretty reasonable prices too. Great place to stop in and hang or grab a bite to go. The maple butter for the popovers is a nice touch.
Beautiful space in a great town. The Monte Cristo for breakfast was amazing and the avocado toast!! Whoa. Super great quality bread. Excellent service and well laid-out.
Amazing gluten free popovers! Lots of gluten free options on the menu. I got the clam chowder, a salad and a popover, then I came back the next day and got a breakfast sandwich and a popover.
First time at popovers in portsmouth, the decor was beautiful and cozy, on a brisk fall day. food was awesome!! the staff was very polite and knowledgeable. will be back.
We were very disappointed, we did not get to try them. The hours posted on Google are inaccurate, so we drive here from Maine, sit in traffic, pay for parking and get to the door only to find a printed piece of paper with there hours taped to the door. They were closed. You are a business, you should be aware of your online presence and update your hours. Make sure you call before you come to find out the hours so you dont waste your time or money for parking.
The Popovers are worth any wait, any price. Absolutely delicious. Plus, they have gluten free popovers too, which my family really appreciates.
Beautiful place, great food! We ordered a couple baked goods to bring home and the cakes were great. We ate sandwiches which were generous in servings and enjoyed the atmosphere.
Their specialty cakes are amazing! This is my go to when I need a cake for a special occasion!
Popovers are good and maple butter is good but these popovers are only good on the day they are baked. Not good as leftovers. Cookies are made with butter but were nothing special.
Amazing bakery on the corner of market square. They have great options for coffees, teas and lots of good sweet options including tiramisu, fruit tarts, cookies, creme brulee. Everything is very fresh and tasty. We ordered tiramisu, fruit tart and creme brulee and loved everything. Its usually crowded so please be patient before seating. Recommend this place
They have gluten free popovers, and a variety of other items. Everything was delicious!
Pretty good spot for a right size breakfast. Good coffee and fresh pastries
Bustling restaurant with much more than just popovers. Everything was really good, especially their popovers with the maple butter stuff.
Excellent food, great staff, quick service. Had a bacon egg and cheese on a popover and the fully loaded popover - both delicious! Cant wait to come back.
We went for breakfast, they have an extensive menu and everything was great. It is a bit pricy. We managed to get a table outside which was great for people watching.Staff was very friendly.
We had the egg sandwich and the popover. They were both very good as well as our iced mochas. Id definitely come here again!
If you want to order a cake for birthday, anniversary or for any special occasion then visit Popovers on the Square in Portsmouth, NH. It is one of the best bakeries in Portsmouth. I always order cake from this bakery. My favorite are Chocolate cake, Cheese cake, and Strawberry Gateau. They also have gluten free cakes but you have order in advance. They offer wide varieties of sandwiches, soups, and salads.I love Tomato Bisque and vegetation Panini. I cannot resist myself to have Tiramisu dessert whenever I go to Popovers. They have inside and outside sitting options. Enjoy Portsmouth down view with awesome food.
Very good coffee, and delicious pastries. Plus point for having special treats that you can purchase for dogs, my black lab was very happy for a few seconds. They have good outdoor seating as well as where you can have dogs.
Nice and centrally located in downtown Portsmouth. A good day to enjoy the patio. Food is very good.
Great salads served with most delicious popovers.Maple 🍁 butter 🧈 is a treat !
Great spot in the center of town. Friendly staff, nice patio. Wow, the treats!!!!
Lovely visit this morning to our favorite breakfast Cafe in Portsmouth, NH...Popovers! Once again, we were in heaven with excellent service, ambience, cleanliness and of course the worlds best Popovers served warm with smooth sweet cream butter, washed down by a tasty mimosa. Today is going to be a great day in no small measure due to this wonderful start!!
Not only is the food amazing, the staff are friendly and personable! I love the vibe here!
Clean, quick and a great variety. First ever pop over! I look forward to another.
Amazing food, dog-friendly, and right on the main strip! Will definitely be back for somebmore good food.
The Popovers here are awesome. We get cake too.
Went for breakfast. Love their egg sandwich.
Such a great place. Amazing food and they are great about working around food allergies.I promise, you wont be disappointed when you visit.
Had late lunch before going to Strawbery Banke Museum. They had a long queue when we came but the service was quite fast. We ordered Hot Tea (English Breakfast), Popover, Clam Chowder, Turkey Sandwich, Eclair and Canoli. The Clam Chowder (served with mini popover) was great and the portion is big (for me). Turkey sandwich came with chips, the toast breas itself was tasty and the turkey & veggie were fresh and delicious. The popover is a must try, spread it with the maple butter, taste just awesome. The Eclair and Canoli were just okay.
Friendly staff, great food and pasterys. Clean and quick. Top notch
Excellent food and a great location right on Market Square.
Instead of a heavy breakfast/lunch, Brendan and I decided to have a light breakfast/lunch at Popovers on the Square. Brendan enjoyed the Avocado Toast, which consisted of toasted sourdough bread brushed with EVOO, topped with chopped Hass avocado, dusted with aleppo pepper, and cured lemon. A Chai Latte paired nicely with a popover with sweet butter cream and orange marmalade jam.
Great popovers... the crab cakes hit the spot. Also tried their most popular dish, scrambled eggs & cheese popovers. The popovers were light & fresh. They have a wide variety of desserts & pastries with inside seating & (alfresco) patio dining. Definitely worth coming back. This is a self serve place. The chefs do a tremendous job. Update: visited again after a couple of weeks, 07/13/18. Crabcakes were ok but not the same. May have missed some seasoning. The server/cashier barely acknowledged us. May need more training. Fyi, Brunch for 2 with seafood dishes costed $30.
They are a wonderful little cafe/bakery. Sandwiches are all excellent, the bread they use is divine. Focaccia always perfect. Coffee good, the seasons are kind here, inside warm and cozy now in winter, outside lovely in the air in the warmer weather.
We traveled to Portsmouth briefly on a road trip. We stopped in for breakfast before we headed out to our next destination. I got the salmon egg bagel and my boyfriend got the avocado toast. Both were ready quickly, looked and tasted amazing! Both served with a side of fruit. (He did say his was good, but that he wished hed ordered mine after he tried it - highly recommend it if you like salmon!) We also each got a mini pop over because, ya gotta try em, right? Oh my goodness! If I lived locally Id be craving those all the time! The light flakey popover makes a perfect vehicle for the delicious maple butter. They also were taking COVID precautions, and had indoor and outdoor seating available.
Fun spot. And where else can you find popovers?
Their namesake popover is nothing short of mystical. Its beautiful. Its perfect. Its delicious. Special callout to Joanna Knapp, whos popovers forever changed my life.
Reminds me of a Panera restaurant concept in a way. This place can be very busy but service was good. Food was decent although I wish the sandwiches contained a little more meat based on the price you pay.The menu offers a wide selection of choices and some unique offerings as well. Seating can be challenging on a busy day so be prepared.
Busy busy place! Went on a warm day in January and it was packed. Popover was good but there wasnt enough of the maple butter to really fill it up like I wanted to and the mocha I got was a tad sweet (otherwise would have been a 5 star review). Good place to people watch on the square (if you can get a seat)
My friends and family love their [regular] popovers and I am very impressed with their gluten free popovers! Maple butter is a nice touch. Highly recommend.
The best pop overs and clam chowder
They definitely could up their game.1. Popovers seem to be an afterthought. You get one with a meal.2. The actual popovers are only so-so. I was hoping for a little more creativity in the their namesake.3. The food, while pretty good, is not worth the money. My date and I each had a salad and a drink, totalling $40
Love this place! Fair prices, delicious! Coming from Massachusetts, we tried it and it was great! Be sure to try the popovers, but warning: they are gigantic and you might be full before you even eat anything! Oh, and also try out the maple butter- they are a ceartain delicious thing!
Our favorite place in Portmouth
On my trip I purchased a breakfast sandwich and got an iced coffee black. Their egg sandwich with cheese and bacon on sourdough bread was amazing. Bacon was crispy and cheese was melted to perfection! Coffee was great as well. My friend got a fully loaded popover which was to die for, as well as a specialty latte that disappeared before my eyes. Great atmosphere and friendly service! Will definitely return for breakfast or lunch and of course coffee!
The Italian sandwich was made with homemade bread and delicious fresh meat and cheese. The pastries were great and I would recommend anything here.
Fabulous gluten-free popovers!
Great Sandwich! Staff were so nice! Oh and the popovers are so so delicious. Thanks
Wonderful Gluten free selection.
Superb cakes and cookies as well as the best popovers ever
Good coffee and tarts.
Excellent spot for breakfast, lunch, a snack or dessert. Always make it a point to stop by and grab a popover.
Nice bakery and cafe with small menu but most items made in house. They have good COVID procedures and an option for spacious outdoor dining on an interesting street in the town.
This was my first visit to Popovers. Wonderful deserts for sure. Coffee is fresh and a nice selection that is self serve and bottomless. Relaxed atmosphere and nice selection of original menu items and a not a typical egg breakfast menu.If you looking for a quiet place to chat, relax and enjoy some bakery goods with coffee and friends then give it a try. I know Ill be back again.
Been going to Popovers once a year for many years when we were passing through Portsmouth. Always good except for today. I had the Ceaser Salad with chicken. Even with the dressing, the salad was bland and the chicken tasted rubbery with absolutely no flavor. The popover was dry too. Disappointing. On a happier note, my wife ordered the Braised Pork and Green Bean sandwich. No Greenbeans for this sandwich as they were out. However, it was delicious. The pork had a nice crisp on it and very tender.I will return and hope the next time the consistency is back.
Nice place for breakfast, brunch and lunch. Wide variety of baked goods including gluten free. Gluten free and regular popovers made fresh.
Treat yourself to some hot chocolate or a slice of something delicious like carrot cake.
Check this place out. Great food...desserts. Everything is good. Go there on Sunday morning to get a coffee, bloody Mary and read the paper or surf the net. Awesome mix of people frequent this place.Great food and conversations.
I have had two sandwiches from here and loved both.
The special order cakes are top notch. Salads and sandwiches are very good. Staff could be friendlier.
Cute restaurant and great popovers. Nice outdoor seating and good selections for breakfast.
Fresh baked Popovers filled with Bacon, Egg and Cheese. Need I say more? Just stop in and try one for yourself!
Dog friendly patios, delicious quiche, fresh fruit and coffee, beautiful pastries and cakes all at reasonable prices for truly amazing desserts!EDIT: though the above may be true the service is horrid. Just tried to set up an expensive wedding cake purchase over the phone (they wont call back from the online inquiry my fiance placed a month ago) and was met with the rudest, unprofessional baker not even interested in making a sale.
Good food. Nice atmosphere for indoor or outdoor dining.
Went here for lunch today. They didnt have something that was supposed to be on my sandwich and didnt tell us, they somehow managed to screw up my husbands order even though it was just a simple turkey sandwich. How do you mess up a sandwich...? Also took like 35 minutes to even get out 2 sandwiches and it wasnt even that busy... It was 2pm.
The popover here is very good. They provide some maple butter to go along with your popover!
The popovers were cooked perfectly. However getting it to go meant they didnt heat them, which we didnt know or we would have gotten for here to sit on the patio. The maple butter was ok. And no quality jam, just smuckers in mini packets Id expect to see at IHOP, not an upscale bakery.
