This grocery store is fantastic. They carry the best of the best. Super clean and easy to find things. No choice overload. They simply carry the few best things in each category and it makes it very easy to shop. I trust their choices and I know everything in there is on the healthier side of the spectrum, no matter what it is.
I am vegan, so I LOVE shopping at Alberta Cooperative Grocery -- and I even became a member of Alberta Co-op twice! You see, I used to live in Northeast Portland and I remember when Alberta Co-op opened its doors in 2001, which is when I was a member for the first time; then I moved away for about two years before returning to Oregon. And, therefore, this is the second time I have been a member. They have a great selection of vegan products and their 10% off once per month for members -- between the 1st and the 10th of each month -- is a great way to save even more than you already save. Plus, I live in the Pearl District and I walk 3.3 miles in order to shop at Alberta Co-op!
If you live in NE Portland this is a great place to shop for all your needs. Great quality, healthy items and fresh produce. Amazing people who work here!
Bulk bin and the biggest sheet of tempeh I’ve ever seen. They just don’t have bulk bin peanut butter but laundry detergent animal food all of teas lentils nuts flours. Very friendly staff. Great location
Very disappointed by the decision not to put up a sign in support of Palestine. It was a dishonest and cowardly decision. I will not be shopping here again.
Really good service. Fresh produce and bread. Great variety.
One very bad experience here with rude staff has ruined my otherwise great experiences at the coop. I’m a neighborhood customer who frequently drops by the coop. My partner (cis male) regularly brings his dog in when we need to pickup a few items. Staff usually comes up to him, petting our dog and asking questions about his breed, age, etc. He has never been told that dogs aren’t allowed at the coop. This morning I was walking our dog and my partner asked me to swing by the coop for butter. I walked a few steps in with a tight grip on my dogs leash, trying to get the attention of the two white women at the register who were mid conversation. From what I heard, they were laughing, joking loudly about child labor... I waited until they finished laughing and politely asked “it’s ok if the dog comes in to shop, correct?” The two women stared at me, clearly disgruntled, and one of them said “no, no. No.” I replied back, “I’m sorry, I was under the impression they were.” They shot back to me “absolutely not” and stared at me in silence until I quietly backed out of the store, which from what I could tell had zero customers. The coop should have a clear policy on dogs and train staff to politely communicate that policy to customers. It really bothers me that my male partner receives completely different staff reactions on the presence of the same exact dog. I expect the coop to treat their WOC customers the same as their white male counterparts.
Not as expensive as nw thurman coop
Super rude staff. I’m over it. I wanted to support them, but terrible selection, no meat or cheese, even scant fish products, aggressive homeless people, and did I mention the staff are so unwelcoming? They don’t deserve my financial support.
I love to pop in here when I just need a few things to round out a meal, or when Im looking for a special treat. Awesome chocolate selection, always seem to have the one perfect piece of fruit to brighten my day, and theres a good chance Ill find a new flavor of kombucha and something unintended, like wildflower seeds or a tote bag.
What a fun little place! We found exactly what we needed and enjoyed doing it.
Courteous, knowledgeable staff, and a wide selection of organic and ethically sourced groceries.
What can I say, this place is like walking into a Welcome Home party. The people here are so helpful and nice. They work hard and provide AMAZING food for your pantry. Great prices on healthy food, and FYI: If you become a co-op member you save money. So cool! Invest in your community.
Everything you needed is here, they always have fresh meat. Vegetables and fruits are fresh too. Products are well organized on the shelves.
It’s ok. The bread I got feels and tastes more like a sponge. If you’re used to bigger stores, watch out for the comparatively high prices.
Staff is on top of keeping the community safe with COVID precautions & everyone who works here has a great attitude. Great place to shop if you live local & want to support Alberta shops. Dont come here for extensive shopping list needs but they have the essentials.
This place is just plain cute. Like I want to hig it as a concept.
Wonderful people & great local organic selections!♡🖖🤗🎵🎶🤙
Great products and great people; great selection of bulk items, gluten free, diary free, vegan, etc. And its a co-op!
Man, today I had a very bad day involving two of my family members. I was feeling really low and was waiting for the 8 bus. I stopped in to get an apple and chocolate bar while I waited. The clerk ask how my day was and I was straight up with him and told him my situation and that the day had been long. His act of kindness brightened my day.I didnt get your name, but thank you so much for your big heart and kindness ❤️.
Always love supporting the co-op. Great food and great people.
Great local natural foods grocery co-op with excellent variety.
One of the best Co-ops Ive ever been to. I was lucky to have this store as my main grocer for produce and dairy for over 3 years. Things are always fresh, fairly priced, and quality. The selection of goods from within a 100 miles of Portland is the best anywhere in town.
Staff was nice enough. But the place is like a knock off trader Joes. Lots of vegan stuff so I guess thats good for some people. Very expensive products for people obsessed with health.
The staff are friendly. Good products, good people, good vibe.
Great local grocery, very high quality produce and even better employees. Extensive bulk section. Meat selection is limited, mostly frozen other than sausages/bacon/deli.
Great little grocery with an excellent selection of healthy foods
Very friendly crew and not stressed like some of the people at the larger stores. I really liked the atmosphere. An interestingly pleasant notable was that the lady shoppers were saying hi to me.
Packs most everything you want into a compact space and competitive pricing. Try it! More than once!
We are in town to spend Thanksgiving with our daughter and her husband. We found this co-op on line and went in to shop. The selection was very good especially for locally raised non-cafo meats. However, as we were checking out my wife was approached by an employee and asked that we not come in as a family - suggesting we send in one person to shop. (There we four of us, each couple with a separate purchase.) We were made to feel quite unwelcome. We came in to purchase one particular item, but after seeing what the co-op offered we purchased additional items totaling over $100. We likely will not be back as there are other options in Portland that would appreciate our business.
A nice, small food co-op. Good selection of local produce. They cant compete with the big boys on price, but they do good quality at a fair price with discounts for seniors and unemployed members.
Very helpful customer service
Love this little store. I was one of the neighborhood folks that helped it become a store from a buying club (2001).
Nice stroll down artist lane.
Best market in town for their great selection of high quality, local, and organic produce, good grocery section, decent bulk section. Folks who work there are a bit cold and too edgy for a market, though.
I decided to go through their hiring process and apply for the front end team member. Just a little background I am an African American woman. The interview was going well, so I thought, until they said I am very articulate and jokingly asked youre not going to get ghetto on us are you? I was beyond floored! Who asks that question!! What does that even mean?! I cannot support this place.
Nicely stocked coop grocery store. Monitor at door for distancing measures. Friendly, helpful staff.
Great store, staff is fantastic as well
Ive been a member since I moved to Portland back in 2013. Ive always received friendly service. They have a decent selection given the size of the space. Its great to support a place/organization that really cares about its community.
Great deli where theyll make you an amazing boars head sandwich. Butcher very good. Seafood good. Produce amazing. I really love this place. Staff friendly.
Prices are mostly-ok and selection is pretty good. Always amazing they always have the products I need
Love this store. So many wonderful choices and very helpful staff!!
Interesting natural food market that is very vegan and local business oriented, but also has organic and humanely treated meat products for carnivores like me. I really hope the concept behind this store spreads and becomes more common. The produce quality here is top notch, too.
Great selection and fresh produce. What more do you need?
Fair that the Exe Order to wear a mask is imposed and the clerk did make a kind gesture and offered a mask. Here’s the thing. It didn’t fit and the guy at the check out was arbitrary about the “law”. Ok.I get it.We are all safe and sane but I don’t need the multiple reminders and micromanaging. Was not made to feel welcomed. 3 stars I get better interactions from homeless folx.
I love the Co-Op! I love buying things in bulk here like epsom salt and green tea. It has a little better price on yogurt and hummus than new seasons or Whole Foods. Also the 1 lb. coffee I buy there roasted by Caffe Vita is also $2 cheaper here than at New Seasons. Produce can be expensive, but other than that it’s great and convenient!
Very helpful staff. Small selection but great quality. Plus its next to a really cool wine bar
Great selection of personal cares and pantry essentials. They care about zero-waste shopping. Love it!
Very cool supermarket and place. Items are pretty good. That they have good quality and quantity of products.
🖒🖒🖒🖒The whole concept and everything also the whole place was nice and cleaning but I must say I was a little claustrophobic in there its very tight hard to bend over and look at the stuff on the bottom shelf and I guess depending on who you are the clerks they say they are their own managers but I noticed two of them tracking me down to the whole store treating me as if I was a thief which I didnt really appreciate that especially after I spent $150 in there and I was only there for like 30 minutes and that was very polite kind dress nice well mannered and had much respect and I was a little shocked by the way I was being treated giving me the whole stare down and like just looking at me like I was a thief or something I understand they were not in the greatest neighborhood but regardless of race size color gender whatever you shouldnt treat people like that almost makes me want to not go there because pretty much new seasons is the same thing except a million times bigger way nicer and way more options but I do recommend go in here to check it out for yourself I will for sure be going back again to give them a second chance also if you guys are reading this you should take note dont treat your customers like that or stereotype them you were treating me like a thief before I even walk down one aisle you guys are acting like so nervous and staring me up and down and like can I help you can I help you can I help you and then looking at me at every aisle the guy Im talking about mostly is the guy with the long curly brown almost red like hair which wasnt very knowledgeable on any of the products as well good thing I do my own homework and research thank you though if it wasnt for the couple clerks or managers whatever follow me around treating me and stereotyping me as if I was a thief because of the neighborhood I would have given five stars maybe something to think about
Love this place. Their selection and prices are great. What really makes the place, though, is the friendly staff. They feel like great neighbors. And considering I can get most things I need here in a pinch, I visit frequently.
Very cute local grocer! I dig that there’s not too much packed onto the shelves. It seems to serve the local community very well! Impressive selection of vegan snacks and local beer.
Great little grocery store.
The bulk selection is very good - I especially like the honey and oil options they offer in bulk. They also carry oat milk which is appreciated for my son and his allergies to dairy. Other selections are small, though, and the incentives (discounts, member specials, etc) to join the co-op are highly disappointing.
Ive been a member since I moved to Portland back in 2013. Ive always received friendly service. They have a decent selection given the size of the space. Its great to support a place/organization that really cares about its community.
Such a lovely little grocery market. They have a great selection of local foods, and this is the only place I can find Pan’s Mushroom Jerky. So good!
We love this fun cozy co-op! They have friendly staff, a great selection and variety of food and supplies. We really like the area and convenience of their location. Definitely go, support your local co-op and enjoy! Yum!
Prices are not at ALL expensive for what youre getting, despite other reviews. this grocery store has high quality organic produce straight from the farm. it doesnt get much better than that. plus a great selection for a store so small, and the staff is always, always, always very nice and helpful.
Very helpful staff. Small selection but great quality. Plus its next to a really cool wine bar
So i have been coming here off and on for a few years. Finally after the remodel and later hours i became a member because i love it so much!. The staff is friendly and helpful. They had a huge selection and compared to other local co-ops i have been to this has a decent vegan selection! Their prices are really comparable to like whole foods or new seasons but its local and small!! The produce is where its at! I need a lot of fresh veggies for me and my rabbit so having as much as they do really helps. The fruit is fresh and super tasty im always excited to see in their insta stories of anything new in and how to prepare it if needed. Try it out maybe give it a few gos i think its totally worth stopping in.
A good, well stocked Co-op that engages with the community and offers prices that are still competitive to regular grocery stores is a wonderful thing. And the Alberta Collective grocery does all this, and more! I have found that the prices on their bulk items are even less expensive than most grocery store bulk products. Membership is not required, but its cheap enough for that it becomes worth joining if one shops there even just occasionally.
Local food coop owned by the local neighborhood. Lots of selections, fresh produce, lots of bulk spice and other. Good for local products as well, never a long wait, get in and get out.
I like there customer service skills. I tested everyones patients. These guys won and had most compassion and understanding in all of Portland
Neat coop market with reasonable prices. If we lived in the area we would likely become owners. Only purchased a few things but they had some unique selections.
Best Lil market on the block! Love their local produce and lots of healthful and vegan foods, snacks, organics, quick bites and mostly local sourced items.
Great little co-op! Nice selection of food and beverages, and every time Ive been in there the cashiers have been very friendly and helpful. I just wish it was a little more affordable.
Good selection of vegan and vegetarian staples. Can be pricey, but thats sort of built in to the business model, though their sale prices are actually surprisingly good. If on a budget definitely look for the sale price tags.
Small, but great selection of goods. You can find some hyper local, unique, items here.
Ive been shopping at the Alberta co-op for 9 years. They actually care about the items they stock. Their produce is amazing. The staff is nice and, in my experience, incredibly knowledgeable. If you are looking for groceries, support the co-op!
They have a good assortment of health food stuff. I was looking for special utensils - they did not have what I was looking for
Fantastic co-op! Better prices than New Seasons on most items. Amazing produce and bulk sections for such a small store. Local meats, beers, and breads as well. 10% off on the 10th of each month.
The staff here are awesome, I especially love the produce staff. If you have any questions about their fruit or produce they almost always have the answers. Recently I asked what the inside of an unfamiliar vegetable was like, they said they didnt know but sliced one on the spot so we could sample it!That being said, it is a bit pricy but I am all for having a well curated selection to choose from! I appreciate that they provide ethical, sustainable and local options
Its my local food co-op. Im a member, and love it. Its like an old fashioned corner store, back in the days before pesticides when most stuff was organic anyways, just not labeled as such.
Lovely, if small, little grocery store. Open to non-members. They had a number of our go to vegan products (Kite Hill, Chao, Field Roast, etc.), a nice bulk section, and good looking produce.
Friendly neighborhood grocery stop with specialty and organic items. Cute and conveniently located. Community minded with an emphasis on local products and human contact.
Cool selection of so many awesome, enticing things! Everything from ground lamb to CBD. Id like to see a bigger cheese selection, but the place is small and, despite this, has a very nice variety of organic, holistic foods, herbs etc. Super nice people there, too!
Friendly, helpful staff. Great prices on quality produce. Products generally local and ethically sourced. A truly lovely place.
Friendly staff and good variety of products.
Bulk herbs - Great local produce - Quaffable wines - Affordable prices - Trustworthy curation - Lovely staff!!
Shop the Co-op Deals and look for coupons on the bar at the front door. Much savings to be had! and the bulk herb section...fuggettaboutit! Theyve got it all, or will call another herb shop to find it! Beer and wine seem to be permanently on sale which is the best.
Ive watched this place grow from a cute little community grocery to an expanded and epic bulk section (they got bulk veganase yall) and on its way to being collectively managed. Truly a pillar of the community. Not just for groceries, check them out on your lunch break for some great sandwiches and snacks from local sources and companies!
It’s a nice store with good produce but I had an incident today and don’t see on the site where to report it. When I tried to pay for my groceries your clerk loudly talked about how he didn’t understand how to get my ebt card to work. It was very rude and embarrassing. I feel bad enough about needing assistance for right now and don’t need some ignorant clerk telling the entire store I have an ebt card.
If youre looking for a co-operative with an awesome staff, all organic produce, well curated bulk section, wines, beers, meat, vegan supplies, and more... Youve found it. Come in for the stuff. Come back because everyone is friendly and helpful.
High prices and lack of basics. I only brought a bottle of chai. Might be a good place to shop just not for me.
Neighborhood institution. Decent prices even if you are not a member. Not a huge selection and definitely better for the vegetarians than the meat eaters. Always friendly.
Awesome people with great prices, dead center of gentrification city.
So charming. Smells like the way a grocery store should. Crisp produce and spices in the air. Thank you!
Great neighborhood vibe 👍🏻
They have everything. The people working are nice and very personable.
A bit small compared to many Pdx Coops but nice.Prices are high but not crazy.Selection was interesting... Saw some things Id never seen before. Some of the staff seemed pretty grumpy, but not in a rude way.Nice parking lot.
I love to support coops. We stop in every time we are in the neighborhood. Theres not much I can eat here so we dont spend much. We are a highly allergic family.
I love to support co-ops, but this one is so disorganized and the service is always poor in my experiences. Whenever I go shopping here, I have to stop at another store after since they dont carry a lot. Its good to get bulk items, but last time I went they were out of almost everything I needed from the bulk bins.My biggest problem is that the staff is not very knowledgeable and whenever I have asked a question about an item they carry they usually dont know the answer and thats the end of the conversation.I do continue to shop here occasionally since its the only place that carries soy curls in NE and they have lots of vegan friendly products.
Perfect for what it is - a corner store co-op, great for that quick trip to grab that last natural or organic ingredient for your meal. Naturally, prices reflect the smaller footprint, higher quality choices and neighborhood convenience.
Co-op grocery stores rule. This has what you need, but isnt overwhelmingly large. The folks who work here are also super nice.
Wonderful produce assortment that bleeds out to a few aisles of organic foods. Selection is relatively small but the are great about giving you the right product rather than overwhelm you with choices.
