Maple Leaf is absolutely delicious! They have the vibe of a low key diner, but food taste that is on par with the best restaurants in Portland. The breakfast menu has definitely gotten our attention, as I keep wanting to go back every weekend morning — and we truly appreciate the effort they put in. My partner and I asked for two items to share (classic egg breakfast with a side of French toast), and with no prompting by us, they split-plated everything in a beautiful display, so we didn’t have to share over one plate or split it ourselves. Regrettably, my hunger got the best of me so the pictures don’t include the aesthetic they provided. The staff is super friendly, they have great outdoor seating both sun and shade (yes, bring your dog!), and the service is an appropriate pace for quality food. This is a favorite local spot.
Service was really good. Sweet waitress. The food very good. It took over 30 to get two breakfast. I had hash browns ( extra crispy) bacon and eggs. My friend a pancake breakfast. I believe the bill was less than $20. Great place, just be patient!!
Like anything, anyone, anyplace there are good days and bad. However, there isnt another Breakfast spot that is more reasonable and tasty. I would take the Worst Bacon & Eggs Breakfast from Maple Leaf over most Breakfast Spots Best Effort. Another educated palette, My Son, give a Gold star for the Burgers. The Food is Great, the Wait staff are friendly and quirky. I Love this Place.
We love this place. Anytime going down Foster we kind of scratch our heads and wonder if we can make a stop in. The family is delightful and the cooking is like home- generous helpings made with care and love. They are always friendly and make you feel welcome and comfortable.I was so happy to see them back after the pandemic. They have done some improvements and I think itll be better than ever!I cant wait for my next trip there :)You wont regret it
I overall hated this place both visits. On my first time there, I went in and the waitress immediately sat us in a booth. After she handed us menus, I started crying, I have no idea why I did that but it was the atmosphere of the restaurant that made me cry. And after we ordered our food, and after the food had been brought to our table, I started crying again. This restaurant makes me cry so much that I dont have the nerves to go back. To be completely honest this restaurant could have some improvements. Wont be going back
Love this place. Everything is always delicious and the customer service is always stellar. Had the best chicken and broccoli over rice, so yummy and satisfying. Also, the chocolate cake is amazing. I even ate their split pea soup last time and it was delightful. Im so impressed because I would never eat it before. Now Ill only get it from there. Please go and support your neighbors and their businesses.
I cant say enough good things about Maple Leaf. The staff have worked here for decades, the food is solid, they are thoughtful with the presentation, kind about substitutions or dietary needs, and the perfect place to get delicious all-day breakfast. Also, their fish and chips are bomb.
Dont get the pineapple burger. Ive had teriyaki burgers other places and they were awesome but this one had sweet and sour sauce and pineapple sounds good but hamburger is as thin as a dime . I got the sauce on the side, it was the consistency of water so when I put it on the bun it turned to mush. And just no flavor. It came with fries those were really good. Their breakfast are good though so Ill will stick with getting breakfast from them.
Im gonna be up front, Im a biased reviewer. I. Love. Diners. I dont know if its the steady diet of Gilmore Girls I watched growing up, or just that a good diner is a welcome break from some of the more uppity and pricey brunch options in Portland - but diners are amazing, and Maple Leaf is officially in my top diners of all time. The menu is broad without being overwhelming, and features all the classics plus a great section of Chinese food brunch twists. I had a fluffy Belgian waffle, and my boyfriend had a Chinese Pork Omelette. Both were very reasonably priced - and the dinner menu looked like a steal price wise.Breakdown:Lots of comfortable seatingBrunch food was a good value, coffee is free before 10:30Lots of regulars, but it was still comfortable and I still felt welcomeFamily run business with friendly service
The Maple Leaf is a gem! Not only does it serve authentic diner food, but it also has a variety of Chinese dishes to complement everything else on the menu. Service is quick, courteous and thoughtful.A colleague and I drove over to have breakfast about two weeks ago; he had the ham and eggs breakfast, and I had one of my favorites, the egg foo yung. Both were served quickly (and with due care for sanitary observances). Portions were generous (my egg foo yung portion was big enough that I took the leftovers home, where it made a very satisfying supper!) and flavorful.Im amazed at how quickly The Maple Leaf has rebounded from an unfortunate accident earlier in the year, when a driver lost control of their vehicle, and rammed into the front of the building. The repairs have brought the restaurant back into mint condition, and the thoughtful accommodations for partitioned dining spaces are very welcoming.
I had the hawaiian burger. It was really good. The sauce was sweet, so if you like spicy better add some rooster sauce.
The thing that caught our attention was the mention of Chinese flare in an American diner so we checked it out. Being that it has been here overt 40 years and the eclectic asian influenced decor had us intriqued so we had to ask. We were fortunate to talk to Richard the son of the owner and found out that his parents (with 11 other siblings) moved to Honduras from China, then to Florida before settling in Portland. We also leaned about the allegged encounter of his mom with infamous DB Copper at the restaurant after his plane jump. Guess you just have to find out from her yourself by asking her about the $20 that the FBI asked from her to trace the stolen money that she never got back. Then there is another story of Tonya Hardings mom sowing her dress in the cafe. Now the food. We substituted the hashbrown and toast with their egg fu yong. It was definitely a diner food. The food was a typical well cooked but the story of the place more than make up for it.
Great food very friendly staff!
It might not be for everyone but I really love this place. Its nostalgic & perfect in many ways.been eating here for about 20 years.
Love this place! Especially the Asian influence to their menu. I mean, it’s still your classic 1950’s era American Diner but you can get good Chinese food and fusion dishes too. It reminds me of the Cuba d’Asian restaurants in New York City. I used to eat there all the time, but had to do without while they remodeled last year, and for now, takeout. The remodel includes an outdoor area, so on good weather days, great food in the fresh air! My favorite lunch is the pineapple burger which another reviewer didn’t enjoy, thus prompting me to write this review. You just cannot compare pineapple and teriyaki burgers. Most teriyaki dishes are like eating extra sticky Slim Jim’s. The Maple Leaf’s sweet and sour is the best and freshest in Portland! This isn’t your chemical filled little plastic sauce packets! Sorry if you thought your patty was thin. I’ve never experienced that. Once I thought my fries were cold and jokingly mentioned it to the waitress. She brought me more straight from the fryer. I know I’ve written a lot, but I’ve eaten here since the late 1980’s and can’t say enough good things about this place and that last review sort of fired me up! So, see you there!
Its too bad this place is closed right now. This place is very interesting because it American food but its like asian inside. I love the barstools dining reminds me of small towns where everyone knows each other. Anyways if your looking for something simple try the grill cheese. I love love love it! Have never had one better!
I cannot think of a restaurant more greasy than this one. The fact they add 2 pounds of butter to each meal, makes me wonder why instead of Maple Leaf, they should call the place Fatty Scoop
Great food, generous portions and affordable. Very friendly employees and owner.
I had the french toast special and it was great!
Better than expected food:) old school done right. Will be back.
Good food good prices friendly owner and cashier/waitress
Their food is so nasty taste like plastic. How can you ruin mashed potatoes and gravy. Bean soup was disgusting. We just left. Stay far away from here.
First date was here, and been coming ever since. Great prices, big portions, the owners will remember your face, and plenty of options. We cannot wait till they reopen! ♥️- loyal customers
My son and I love this place!
Wonderful Mom and Pop diner!
Good breakfast great prices
This is my go to diner for breakfast! Good food at a great price. Be patient if you go during a busy time, but its worth the wait
Took my cousin for her birthday this morning. Wow!! Amazing service. Very affordable prices! Huge plates and very cozy setting! Im so glad we came here. Best breakfast at a restaurant that Ive ever had. Keep up the great work maple leaf!
Theres a harshly negative review from the last week claiming food poisoning from two different dishes. I find it unlikely.I have eaten at the Maple Leaf many times (and on many occasions had the chicken or the burgers--never anything but well-prepared and tasty).Good food--diner classics, warm and welcoming atmosphere.February 2018: Im updating this review from some time ago; still eating at the Maple Leaf, find the atmosphere just as warm and homey as it always has been. The food is simple, but hearty and good. (Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners are not just good, but great!)Its a classic diner, run--for somewhat more than forty years, I think--by a hard-working family (there are no boys, as someone on here just recently described them--two sons, but calling men of that age boys?...well.) Some of the wait staff have worked there for decades, and take as much pride in the operation of the diner as the family do. I recommend it.
Good variety of American and Chinese selections. Great 1950s ambiance. Very affordable prices!
Cheap eats. Great food. Service is friendly. It was my first time going there. I went on new years day, so it was a little busy. The food took a while to get once i ordered, but I will definitely go back.
I have been to this place a few times. I have to say you do get very good food for a working mans budget. It is a cool place highly recommend. Nothing fancy just good food.
Maple Leaf is an honest, down to earth, real-deal old-style diner. If you want fancy fare and/or food with names that you cant pronounce, this isnt the place for you.If you are anything like me, and prefer good old-fashioned, home-cooked classic American food (the fries are literally a plain ol potato cut up and then deep fried, the burger patty is hand formed like your best friend would make for you at a BBQ in the summertime) at fair, if not unbelievable, prices you will love this place. They even make their own pickles.Maple Leaf is a fine example of a great American diner.Plenty of parking and the staff and folks that run the place are true sweet hearts who will take care of you as if you were their own.
Pancakes are the best! Cute dinner atmosphere, great food. Yes their Chinese food is good too! I love the variety of it all.
Had breakfast with my husband yesterday morning. The food was excellent!!!! We did wait about 25 minutes to get the food after ordering. But good food takes time to cook! The waitress was nice and chatty. Prices were very reasonable. $16 total before tip. If we are in the neighbor hood again I’m sure we will drop by!
Awesome food. The place is such a friendly place to go. Environment is so home like. Service is amazing. Everything is an A+++++If youre not from Portland Oregon and you come visit I suggest this place for the best meal and service you could ask for
Awesome food at a great price; I think you can still get a chicken fried steak and coffee for under ten bucks. Dont expect fancy dining but do expect to leave full. Keep this place in business and tip well because its great.
Hands down!!! One of the best places to eat! For years I said “I gotta try out this little diner!” I wish I would have came sooner. I’ll contjnue to come here. Excellent home made food, excellent prices, friendly staff, old school all around. Love this place! Brings me back to the ole days when I’m inside the little diner.
Ate an amazing breakfast here. Hubby ate homemade biscuits and gravy. When I asked if the gravy was as good as mine, he refused to answer, so Im assuming it was better, lol. He said the biscuit was amazing!I had a Denver omelette scrambled, with other changes and it came out just like I wanted it. Super yummy!Top that off with fantastic prices (just over $16 for us both, not including tip) and perfect, attentive service and I think Ive found our new favorite neighborhood restaurant!
Friendly service in a classic vintage diner. Our hot turkey and hot beef open faced sandwiches were quite tasty, and the price so affordable. Theres a reason its rated one of the top diners in Portland. Well be back.
We love this diner
Like no other diner in America. REAL food made from scratch, great coffee, huge menu with options for every type of eater. Super warm and friendly staff. I have no idea why this place isnt famous. Its insanely cheap, really tasty food. PLEASE go here and help keep it open. A true Portland gem. Full diner menu (burgers, salads, sandwiches, steaks, breakfast all day) AND a Chinese menu with GREAT Chinese food.
I was in there today to have some breakfast and it was a little busier than normal but had an amazing experience the food was good but took a little longer to get because it seemed like they where short staffed with only one waitress for the whole restaurant. But she had amazing costumer service I was very impressed she was very polite and sweet and doing a very good job at helping everyone in there despite her being the only one on the floor. Would highly recommend this place!!!
It took over an hour to get our food and then it wasnt that great. All food lacked flavor and wasnt really hot when served. The rolls were the best part of the meal.
The best chicken fried steak in the continental United States. The Chinese style pork omelet was phenomenal as well. They are very fairly priced and the staff is friendly and welcoming. Highly recommended
I was impressed. The cook/manager loves getting praised and goes fishing for it between rushes which is cute. Food is delightful. Canadian Asian American Diner food. Yup. I like it.
The Maple Leaf is a great combination of things that have survived the shift to new Portland. Its a small place that looks like it was pulled directly from the 60s. Youll find a mix of retirees and blue collar workers as well as one of the most interesting mixes of foods ever at a diner; American breakfast and American Chinese. Theres nothing fancy, but if you want to eat a real deal omelette and overhear great conversations, this is the place! Karen, the usual server, is a great personality and very attentive. Try the bbq pork omelette if youre feeling up to something new!
Great little restaurant. Took a little bit to get our food, but it was worth the wait. The parasols hanging from the ceiling were a great touch.
I was there recently with a couple of friends and tried their breakfast and it was absolutely delicious! Very generous with their portions. It was on the weekend and it looked like everyone woke up at the same time ... took longer then usual but we were told in advance it would take longer.... we were not in a hurry....we give it a thumbs up!
Good hearty breakfast. Large portions. Very good chicken fried steak, though slightly over seasoned. Gravy left something to be desired. Service was friendly. Very reasonable prices.
One of the best places ever to go. food is great. service is top notch. owners are really nice. the meatloaf is perfect and they dont skimp on the parsley. if there is a better restaurant in SE id be hard pressed to find it.
This is my go to breakfast spot. Good prices and good food for the whole family. The staff are friendly too.
Me and my family have been coming to this restaurant for 7+ years. Love their food! They have great prices, and every time I go in I have to tip them because theyre very friendly. Thanks to Cathy, the cooks and the nice waitress for sending me home happy every time.
My dad use to come here EVERY single morning, and Ive easily eaten a hundred of their pancakes. They offer a lot, their service is great, their people are great, and theyre about as quintessential of a neighborhood restaurant as you can get! Basically they rock.
A quaint little diner with great food for affordable prices. You get more than your moneys worth here in both food and lovely waite staff.
My girlfriend and I regularly visit and we love it. Owners and staff are always friendly and all their meals are incredibly affordable. Give them a try, you wont regret it.
Ive always loved the Maple Leaf for their low prices and great food, but the last experience I had there put me in bed for days. BOTH me and the person I had eaten with had went to the hospital and got diagnosed with food poisoning. I had the homemade fried chicken, and my friend had the cheese burger. Our food was already on the table within ten minutes, when it usually takes about 20-30 minutes. It was one of the worse experiences ive had in my life, and Id HIGHLY suggest not going there unless you wanna feel deathly ill the next few days.
If youre into cafe style food with a twist at a unbelievable price, this place is for you. Big portions and great egg foo yung.Staff and owner are so polite and friendly. Easily my favorite local spot. Easy to find.
Great little old school diner. Waitress was fun to talk to, has been there for 40 years.
The best diner in Portland. No joke. Im not even a big fan of diners bc its usually ubiquitous with poor quality ingredients. This place is an exception to that rule. Best chicken-fried steak, hands down. Great portions, low price. I unfortunately avoided this place for years bc it looks so sketch from Foster. I recommend this place all the time.
After an hour of waiting for food we simply left. We went at 11am on a Saturday and ordered breakfast food. They kept saying how busy the restaurant was but at most it was half full. I would never ever go back here. Even if their food is good, you cant get it! Inexcusable. Sad that IHOP had to get our business.
Excellent service and food. I usually go in for breakfast. Consistent quality, friendly atmosphere.
Pretty nice place and the staff are super nice and the prices are pretty good and the food is pretty good as well they give you a nice amount of food
Great food. Friendly. Great prices
Good food, good prices service was slow but maybe not always
Nice little cafe, coffee comes with most breakfast orders witch never happens any more. Good place to relax and read the paper if you can find one..
Enjoyed the food quaint little place very friendly atmosphere prices were great
Really good food for an affordable price
Been coming here for years. Nice people. Great coffee...great owner, great service! Excellent food at good prices.
Great Chinese food as well as American food choices. Amazing service, friendly and efficient.
Very nice people great food been going there for 4 years with my husband and son. We love it.
Really nice family atmosphere. The staff are very friendly and good with kids. They have a big menu with alot of options and HUGE portions with good prices! Ive been here 5 times now and have never been disappointed.
Had chinese food. Fried shrimp with very tiny shrinp and lots of breading. 😢 Chow main was very good 😊
Privately owned, wholesome food, great service, bathrooms.
Came for dinner with an open mind, but never again. Meal took about 45 minutes to come after ordering, but why? There was only two in our party, and only 2 other customers. The wait world have been fine, but for what?Unseasoned boiled vegetables and a few rubbery pieces of beef passing as soup, salads were served with ranch dressing that was either spoiled or made with rancid oil, and vinaigrette was just white vinegar. For reals? We ordered chicken fried steak with white/sausage gravy and liver & onions. White gravy was completely unseasoned, no salt and barely any gravy with a decent but not good steak.Mashed potatoes were lumpy, but I’m ok with that, it’s how my Grandma did it.Liver and onions, that was actually pretty good! One good find!Glad it was all less that $20 with tip (I won’t dock servers for bad food!) but we won’t be back.
Small Dinner, good food, reasonable prices. Portions are equally reasonable. Service is excellent. A local jewell.
I visited Portland a few months back, and had the Marionberry pancakes. Excellent. When I come back Im definitely getting breakfast here every other day.
Great food great selection great value waitress with the best jokes in town Janae
This is one of our favorite neighborhood spots. Not fast or fancy, but very friendly and family owned. Sit at the counter. Plus, you can pick one or two Foo Egg Foo Young for breakfast.
Delicious, home-made diner food! Great service! Worth stopping in!
Food is awesome and the prices are amazing
In business over 45 years. Nothing has, nor will change here. Step back into the 60s and enter this hidden perl. Cheap but tasty Americana/Chinese offerings. The main waiteres has worked here over 45 years! The prices are unbelievable low. Come and support this place before it will be swallowed by the building trend of our times....
Have ate here since I was 6, Im now 19 great family customer service cozy atmosphere best homemade omelettes and hashbrowns youll ever have.
Cheap with really good breakfast and service.
My steak and eggs was about the most disgusting thing Ive been served in a good long while. Scorched old coffee, flat sodas. We did not have a good time.
Love it. Authentic little mom and pot breakfast diner with great food.
Fricken embarrassing order for 7 people an it takes over an hour when its not packed yep wont be coming back with a big group maybe if Im by myself. Foods good but takes forever fricken embarrassing
Large menu and personable, chatty staff. Good diner food, especially the fried chicken.
Reasonably priced for reasonable food. Always friendly!
Greasiest food Ive ever eaten in my life. Great neighborhood atmosphere and good service though.
Friendly environment, good sized menu. Enjoyed the food and thought it was good for the price.
Family run Chinese and American food a staple of Portland. Great spot.
Great place to come &, conversate. The food is great. The atmosphere takes you way back when. Bring an appetite youll need it for sure.!!!!!!DL, Sparkman.
Typical greasy spoon. The food is ok but the people there are what makes this place so great to go to.
