Wow what a wonderful breakfast! Adorable courtyard seating, very friendly and helpful servers, the entire menu is just lovely. We enjoyed Brie scrambled eggs with bacon and eggs over easy with Italian sausage…just wow! Eggs perfectly cooked and the bacon and sausage just so flavorful and crispy. Both served with delicious roasted potatoes and wheat toast with jam. We were seriously so happy with everything. Thanks for a great experience!
Love the fact that they require vaccination to sit inside. We ended up sitting outside and had our own personal heater. Food was delicious! Try the sausage.
I have been coming to this place a few times - a great restaurant in the neighborhood. Weekly chef creations and specials in addition to regular menu items. Friendly staffs. Outdoors seating is great during the pandemic, both backyard and along the street with tables that seat 2-4 people. I usually come here for breakfast and lunch. Food is nicely presented and packed for takeouts.
I really dont like being this person, this review is mostly just something I wish I read before coming here. Our server was very sweet and in no way responsible for our bad experience, and the outdoor area was adorable. I got the fruit bowl with orange juice and my friend got an omelet. Because there arent substitutes, she paid $5 extra for some additions. We waited for about 40 minutes. The yogurt sauce on my bowl was really, really not good. My friend had to cover her omelet in salt, pepper, and ketchup to make it edible because she was determined to eat her $16 plate. I couldnt finish mine. I really enjoyed my $8 orange juice. As a business owner myself, I know that the supply chain is really screwing a lot of people over and the overhead in running a restaurant is insane. Its a little hard to be completely sympathic from that point of view when I work very hard to cut other expenses to keep our prices reasonable. As a customer, it was incredibly disappointing to spend so much on something neither of us enjoyed, especially with so many other options for an expensive brunch. If you have dietary restrictions that might require substitutes or if you have somewhere you need to be, I dont recommend this place. Be prepared to spend more than you expect.
By far the best in St. John’s possibility Portland, this place is incredible, 5 stars for sure. Not cheap but the food is worth every penny
Waited 90 minutes for food. I get that places are short staffed right now, but we weren’t told beforehand and it was never even acknowledged. We had to cancel plans for lack of time. Great food though, just wish we would have been given the opportunity to make an informed choice.
Sweet and lovely Rachel took care of us for breakfast. Rachel’s energy, calmness, and her sunny attitude brightened the morning! She is quite the breath of fresh air. I am so grateful for her.Other reviews talk about the wait, yes, this isn’t a drive thru and things aren’t going at hyper speed. It’s worth it! Slow down and enjoy the mellow. Visit and relax. Don’t come starving, You will be setting yourself up for grumpiness and this delightful cafe up to fail. Also, who isn’t short staffed right now? The owner, she is cooking and answering the phone and while still being eloquently kind and attentive. Everyone is doing their best. So, slow down and relish in the joy of having home cooked meal made for you and you don’t have to do a thing.Best bacon I have ever had. Seriously, it’s insane. This sweet little cafe is a place I will continue to enjoy for always.
Tasty food, and large portions. Whats not to like.
High quality food, fresh ingredients, professional and kind staff.
Great breakfast. Be sure to order pancakes.
The last few times we have been there our food arrived cold. It was tasty, but would have been better warm
Refreshingly great! The Butternut Soup was delicious, Cucumber salad reminded me of my Moms and the sandwich was excellent!
My new favorite place to be. Just move here 4 weeks ago. 2 of my favorite things; Books and YRn for knitting.
It was a good place for breakfast on a gray Friday morning. Not exact cozy, but delicious food
Tad expensive and was not doing lunch menu on Sunday even though online ordering gives the options. Also, I dont think their seating on the sidewalk leaves the required 3 foot width for those in mobility devices (it is at least on the side street that has sidewalks on both sides so it doesnt create a huge inconvenience). But was happy to support some place local.
We got Lucky, This Place is Popular!!Nestled away in a strip of unassuming stores and shops is John Street Cafe in Portland OR. This hidden Gem restaurant is a local hot spot for breakfast, brunch and lunch in the St. Johns area. On this visit in which I was joined by colleagues from the local EVRAZ I decided on a homemade soup to try and the Blackened Red Snapper Salad which was a fantastic dish for a lunch. Filled with fresh veggies and thinly shaved cheese and a very light dressing and of course a perfect portion of red snapper, not enough to give you a food coma but just enough to know you had something to eat. All in all a great lunch and affordably priced. The St.Johns area in Portland is known for its eclectic food scene with many little Ma-and-Pa places serving all kinds of different cuisines, definitely worth checking out if youre exploring the local food scene in Portland.
Upon moving to St. John’s we were told that this spot was the best for service & food. We’ve attempted to go twice the past week & waited at the doorway for over half an hour & placed our names on the list. No one greeted us even after making eye contact with us. Never had the food but the menu looks great. Super disappointing.
The food was 4-5 stars. Our server was friendly and kept us up to date on our order so she earned 4-5 stars. However they had a cook shortage and it took 2 hours to get our food. And 20+ to get seated when we made a reservation. It took from 10:30-1 to have breakfast. So that part was rather disappointing.
We went there for brunch and the food was delicious!! Would have given a 5 star rating but it took a long time to get our food. Totally worth the wait though.
Quality food with a thoughtful COVID safe outdoor seating area. Service was a little slower paced but friendly and unobtrusive.
They have an expanded set of outdoor dining behind the restaurant in the alley. Go there if you are having trouble finding anyone. We went for breakfast and food was good. Of you are in St. John, this is a good option. I wouldnt make a special trip.
Was there just the other day, was very quiet y clean The service was very good as well the food, had a black bean omelet with potatoes just absolutely awesome I highly recommend John Street Cafe 2 anyone, it definitely has an awesome gr8 vibe Danny S
I have been in search of the best breakfast place in area. This one has made my 1 spot. Simple but tasty!
Great breakfast. So pleasant to dine in the backyard, weather permitting!
My boyfriend talked this place up for weeks before he took me here. Hands down the best breakfast place you will ever go to! Super friendly staff and amazing food! What’s not to love about this place!
The food is good but the wait time is unacceptable. This is my third and last time here. It has been at least an hour’s wait after ordering all three times I have been here. Once it was busy and twice it wasn’t. Doesn’t matter even when it’s empty it takes an hour.
A truly excellent culinary delight in St Johns. Wonderful spins on breakfast originals. Dishes you can’t get anywhere else in Portland. The house made jam is a must try.
Great spot for brunch/breakfast. It was our first time visiting and certainly dont be our last. We definitely enjoyed it. Cute little place, nothing too fancy but food was great. We had the special, chicken cilantro omelete as well as the spinach bacon omelete and the special blueberry pancake. Everything was soo good. Potatoes were yummy and the omletes were cooked perfectly with tasty salsa on top. Definitely a good spot to check out.
Went on a Sunday, you could hear the church service from the outside patio and it sounded so joyful. The patio was adorable and shaded with a lot of plants. The food was delicious. They charge to split an omelette but you can split it yourself at no extra cost! Very cute place, very enjoyable atmosphere.
I think they must have had someone call in sick, which is why I didnt do 1⭐. That said, was a good 45-60min before we got our food. The food itself was fine, nothing to write home about. For how much it cost ($16+ per sandwich), the time it took, & how hungry I was by the time the food arrived, I thought I would be blown away. Very underwhelming.
Food and atmosphere are divine. Server Darla is a national treasure. She is like 100 rays of sunshine!
We order breakfast from them on the weekends. They never disappoint. I recommend the breakfast burrito and the black bean omelette. They are super sweet and work hard to time the food to the pickup time given when you order. My mom absolutely loves their jam.
Great food and very consistent. The service has been inconsistent though.
Excellent food, outdoor dining, very good service.
Haven’t had a pancake in a long while. This place reminded me how they are supposed to taste.
TL;DR: As a long-time resident (15 years) of North Portland, I had higher hopes for John Street Cafe. The food was okay, but the service was a rough-go.With family visiting in town and a new puppy at home, we decided to order breakfast with curbside pickup at John Street.Upon arrival, I called per the curbside instructions and was told the kitchen was running late, a few minutes. I waited 15 minutes and then went inside to check on the order. No line / not busy and was told itd be another few minutes. I asked if the order would be brought out curbside, to minimize out/in traffic (and curbside, contact-less was the selection on the online order), the checker said sure dismissively.I waited outside another 20 minutes and returned again to check on order status. After another few minutes, the server saw me and then asked my name, again, and turned to get our order which was waiting on a table, I guess they didnt bring it out. Again, the cafe was not busy, no one else waiting, no to-go orders waiting for pickup, other than mine.Generally, Im pretty sympathetic to those working in restaurants and service industry, and I try to not to make a hard job more difficult. But as a long-time professional, I recognize the importance of how you treat your clients. Every place gets busy (not the case here) and theres a big difference between a server apologizing for an expedition issue vs. a brush off.I asked who was currently managing and the server pointed out the manager. I noted that this was a curbside / no contact that was 30+ minutes late. The manager nodded and no apology provided. Perhaps this was par for the course.Upon getting home, the food was cold, but was good enough after reheating. Perhaps to-go / contactless isnt the way to go. Ive heard good things about the food here. But a poor service experience leaves a bad aftertaste.Ill continue to happily patronize other great North Portland breakfast eateries such as Posies Cafe, Stacks Coffeehouse, Madrona Hill Cafe, Cathedral Coffee, Grand Central Bakery, and Grindhouse Coffee, all of which provide great food and service in our community. It will be difficult to recommend John Street.
My favorite neighborhood breakfast!! The staff provides a great service when eating in or taking out.Everything is wonderful, I can’t pick a favorite dish. This is my weekend splurge :)
Food: 9/10The food here is delicious. They always have plenty of specials and the food is cooked perfectly. The cooking has a nice homestyle vibe that makes you feel as though it was made by your mother for Sunday brunch.Big portions. The bacon is some of the best Ive ever had.Slightly lower rating just because the menu could use more standard breakfast items and less gourmet items.Atmosphere: 5/10Sparsely decorated, can be a bit loud and crowded at the busy times. This of course doesnt detract from the quality of the service, but it does miss that homey vibe so many breakfast places have.Once it gets crowded, people have a tendency to congregate by the front door. This can make it a bit uncomfortable for the tables near the door, as well as the draft from peoples constant coming and going. There is often a person selling the Street Roots paper outside, and they will come to the windows and attempt to make eye contact with you while youre eating to get you to buy.Service: 10/10Quick, timely, and friendly. Thats all theres to say about that.Overall: 8/10A great place to take friends and family for breakfast. Make sure you arrive early to avoid the wait, and try not to sit by the front door. Food you cant go wrong with.
Great food, fine service and a lovely outdoor area.
If I am being 100% honest, this is the best Benedict I’ve had in Portland so far. I was blown away by the quality of my brunch today. It was a dream meal. I customized my Bennie on DoorDash and it came with an impressive fruit side and potatoes. Amazing hollandaise flavor, perfect coffee. This place way exceeded my expectations
Went here for a lazy lunch on a Thursday. There was not too much of a crowd, and the outdoor seating option with heating in their patio is great. We ordered butternut squash soup, seasonal vegetables with rice, a garden burger and bacavo omelet. All of the dishes were very tasty, and the soup in particular was amazing. They have really courteous staff, and all in all, it was a great experience. I look forward to coming here again!
Really good brunch items
Friendly staff and really yummy food. My guy and I had the corned beef hash and quiche. Both amazingly tasty. Definitely want to come back for the lemon ricotta pancakes. And more quiche lol.
The food is always good and theyve really amped up their menu and outdoor seating since the pandemic started. That being said, we went inside and no one greeted us for about 5 or so minutes until I walked up closer and asked where we could sit. The people in the back looked at us but didnt say anything so it was a bit uninviting, but once we sat down and got our food, it was good.
We went to thr restraurant hungry and expecting good food but was surprised to discover the service to be poor and my food came cold and overcooked.
We ordered the salmon hash for delivery and it was absolutely disgusting. It was basically canned puréed salmon and super mush potatoes, the texture was like baby food and the only flavor was the smokiness from the salmon. Salmon hash is one of our favorite brunch food is the it was so bad that it ruined it for us. I don’t know how they can serve food so horrible honestly.
Got the French toast with bacon and eggs, it was so tasty! My iced salted caramel latte was pretty good too. Service was nice and overall we had a great experience.
We waited an hour for breakfast then had cold toast and cold potatoes. I dont think we will be bavk!
Good food, smart ordering system. Good covid precautions.
Nice Quiet Excellant Food and Service..looking forward to returning
I went here for the first time with four friends a couple weeks ago. The food and service were excellent! Its kind of a small place so it feels a little quaint. I had one of their omelette specials and it was delicious. I should also mention they have what I assume is homemade jam. Its really good too! This place is definitely worth checking out.
Really fantastic food with generous portions!
The ambience is welcoming and feels very much homey. We immediately were asked about drinks and they came right away. The wait person was friendly and seemed happy to serve. The food was superior... quiche was incredible with layered jack cheese, vegetables and egg in a light crust, potatoes were lightly crisp on the outside and perfectly done in the middle. The toast was cut from a rustic loaf and the freezer raspberry jam was excellent. I was extremely pleased and would recommend John Street Cafe to any and every one!
This is a wonderful place to visit with your significant other. It is my favorite place to eat in the whole world. The food is fresh, delicious, and made with love. The garden burger is truly spectacular. Whenever I am in Portland I always drive to John Street Cafe for some lunch. If there is a wait it is well worth it.
Best omelets ever!
Excellent food, very tasty and fresh ingredients. We loved the Smoked Salmon omelet and Huevos Rancheros!
Highly recommend the eggs Benedict with ham and extra bacon. Very tasty 😋
Omelets are awesome.
St Johns brunch spot with a plethora of breakfast omelettes and specials. Though its never super important to me, the toast here is delicious- rustic toast with fresh jam. Fresh ingredients, daily specials, fresh squeezed orange juice and reasonably priced.
I enjoy heading down to John Street Cafe most weekends. The food is always on point and the staff is super friendly while providing excellent service. Looking forward to another great breakfast this weekend!
Our server was excellent! She handled all the tables with efficiency and grace even though they were short handed. The food was delicious! Will return over and over.
If you arent familiar with the place you wont find the best items. Theres a specials board that has the good stuff and the waitresses dont tell you about it. Its like finding the monkey in Trader Joes. They do however offer coffee while you wait for a table and everything we did have was okay, but not knowing about the extensive specials menu until after we ordered left my husband and I both ordering items that dont agree with us, I eggs and he cheese (no changes or substitutes). Do try their coffee and country potatoes. They were my favorite part of the meal.
This place has some hearty, tasty breakfast! Love the banana blueberry pancakes and the goat cheese omelette. ..may be a bit of a wait depending on the time you go, but its worth it!
The food would have been amazing, had the server made sure that crispy bacon in omelet was indeed even cooked. My mostly fatty bacon wasnt even cooked to medium. My server said I should order bacon outside of the omelet if I wanted it to be crispy. Even though substitutions are not allowed. Spendy for the service...
A gem waiting for you. Good food. Enjoy it in peace. Take someone you likeThey will like you more for the experience.
Cozy little cafe with amazing food. Pro tip: sit in the back patio if possible.
This is a quaint little restaurant! They have excellent food! The people are wonderful! We love going here whenever we are in town.
Good food at a good price! This quaint little place is in the middle of it all on the main road in St. Johns and has a cozy yet upscale feel, while retaining its feel of a mom-and-pop cafe. Their orange juice is as they describe it: fresh squeezed, and amazing. Their omelets are bursting with flavor and are huge to boot. Their potatoes they serve their omelets with could be crisper and warmer, but still decent. Combined with rustic wheat bread and tasty jam, I was amazed at the quality to price ratio for John Street Cafe!
Amazing food for the prices. But they top that, even, with their teas!
Whether there is a wait or not depends on the time of day you arrive. This place is so good, it always surprises me when there is no wait. They are open 9-2:30 and serve breakfast and lunch. On Sundays they only serve from their famous breakfast menu. They do serve beverages with hard alcohol but this menu is limited to breakfast drinks only. They do have dessert, but this menu us also limited.I come here for the thick bacon and the seasonal menus. They serve large portions for a regional average plate price tag.The decor is strange and works as a discussion starter when youre here for the first time.We try to get breakfast here twice a month and lunch once a month. Highly recommended!
I was really looking for and old school diner. John Street isnt that but I stopped in anyway. The selection of omelettes was veggie friendly so i liked that. I had a green chili omelette with black beans and it was delicious. The plate was skimpy on the potatoes but with toast it was plenty of food. Service was good. I recommend it unless you like to greasy comfort breakfast I was looking for.
Sweet little place and very accommodating.
First time visit. The wait staff was extremely courteous and very pleasant to deal with and the food arrived in short order. My husband and I split the Reuben sandwich. Unfortunately they ruined a perfectly good Reuben with way too much horseradish. But the Cucumber and red pepper salad was sweet and crunchy and the tea was attractively served in a colorful ceramic pot. I would definitely give them another try, probably for breakfast.
Always good service, good food, beautiful patio
Great food, great service, very fresh and extremely fair priced. I have no idea how this place didnt have a line out the door and down the block to get in! Thank you very much!
Best breakfast in town!
Delicious food worth a wait!!!!!
Great food and staff!
UPDATE: I visited here recently (inside) and found the service to be prompt and friendly. The quantities of food (the Black Bean Omelette ) were on par with the past and the flavors - as usual - were very good. All that prevents me from changing this to a five is the inconsistency that has come up in recent visits. I would advise against using the outdoor patio area, unless you are prepared for the service level to drop.- - - -I’ve been coming here For over 10 years. Used to be one of our favorite places to come with their outdoor patio. I had called to verify that it was open so that I could enjoy a rare opportunity for brunch with my 14 year old dog.Today when I came I ordered my usual black bean omelette, and was sorely disappointed at the significant reduction in size of all the portions. I was also sitting in the back patio with my dog and barely got any service to speak of.No one came to ask me if I wanted more water or coffee. No one came to check on me more than one time while I was there for the total of 40 minutes. I had to ask twice for my orange juice. When I finally went into the kitchen to ask for more coffee, when the waitress came out, I asked if it was busy in the front. She said “not really” and indicated that the back patio wasn’t “officially open” though I had verified it was on the phone earlier.Although I acted pleasant, they were standoffish and unhelpful. I likely won’t be coming back again.
Our favorite go to breakfast. It can get busy Saturday morning but where isnt? Plenty of tasty options, variety, and you can even order a big plate of vegetables covered in cheese. Love to start the day with a balanced meal. Yum!
This is the kind of breakfast that keeps hungry boys full
A really enjoyable brunch. The food was delicious and fairly priced. It was quiet in there on a Friday morning, but not empty. The portions were generous and they kept me going till around dinner time. I want to go again soon.
Top notch brunch. Excellent ingredients put into excellent food. They have lunch at noon and its equally tasty. Its definitely one of the best places in St. Johns if not THE best.
Low cost, cheap breakfast food. Sort of slow service, but they were really nice and had games-- we played Racko while waiting for the food. Weird smell overall Its a thrift store too and it felt like the most Portland place Id been. Good experience. I felt very much like a non-regular.
Local, good food, when I stay in the area I come here. Good portions as well.
Food was good plenty of it! Didnt like people coming up to us as we ate @ the table
Cant believe I havent rated this place before! Easily one of the best breakfast spots in the entire Portland area. Their omelettes are unbeatable. Great service too.
