Great food and service! Really good place for brunch on a weekday, they can be pretty busy other days but we got in no problem on an off day. Scary delicious biscuits, and everything else was super yummy too! Definitely recommend a latte, it was so foamy and a perfect day way to survive the oncoming post-brunch nap!
Really good service was surprised how fast they got our food to us with how busy they were. Pricing was perfect for the quality and quantity. Entire staff deserves praise for their work!
Great outdoor sitting in neighborhood setting. Ordered via app at our table and they opened a tab (which was great). Love the variable options. Food was good but not memorable. Best item was eggs Benedict and coffee cake. Coffee was great too. Sometimes, that is enough.
EGGS BENEDICT FLORENTINE! This is, hands down, my favorite place to get breakfast. We come here everytime we can when we visit from Seattle. Great staff. Quick service. Delicious food and drinks. Thx.
It was great except it would have been $18 for tofu, potatoes and vegetables.I had the tofu scramble, pictured below. I liked how soft the tofu was. Made it seem fresh. Potatoes and toast were fine and I appreciated the small amount of veggies on the tofu. I wanted more veggies and it would have cost an additional $5 for a side of veggies to a meal that already cost $13. If the veggies would have been included or cost $2 extra then it would have been 5 stars.
The Eggs Benedict was delicious. Service was good too.. I will be returning. π
Got the prosciutto eggs Benedict with avocado and βextra hollandaiseβ, it was okay, and cold. At $17 bucks, wouldβve liked it to be hot when it got to the table. Or have gotten great service. Thereβs a lot of great food in Portland, this place was pretty average joe.
Please come here. We are in town seeing if we want to move here and if the scenery of this city didnβt do it this restaurant certainly did. Cannot recommend everything here enough.
Service was impersonal, felt like a nuisance to the employees instead of a customer. The food was fine, not great and not terrible. 13.50 for biscuits and gravy is on the high end of what Ive paid for it at other restaurants. My wife didnt like the sandwich she got but no one asked how the food was. I doubt well go back.
This place might be great, but the Tabbed Out app only allows Google Pay and Apple Pay. Left and went somewhere else (and uninstalled the app).
Nice atmosphere and good food. I had the Salmon Scramble with gluten-free toast and decaf coffee. It was pretty good, though the scramble needed a little something, which ended up being the hot sauce on the table. My wife had the Blueberry Pancakes which she was really happy with. Staff was friendly too! Well be stopping in again.
No joy here. Four of us ordered different options and not one person said βMmmm, this is good.β No spark to the food. No interest. Servers yell for customers, are rushed and irritable. Itβs self serve to the point of a fast food counter. They bring the food to the table. Thatβs it. Getting in and out of the miniature picnic tables takes some doing so getting coffee refills is a chore youβd best be determined to undertake. Offering coffee would be something for management to take into consideration. We tipped 20% out of tradition and food service experience, not because we had table service. Maybe this place was really good before it became popular and so busy. Cannot recommend.
Incredible biscuits- a must have for the bennies. Fun little diner. Really great food
I usually avoid coming here on weekend( too busy!) but weekdays is perfect. My favorite one is Egg Benedict with bacon and avocado, French fries on side( instead of home fries). Their homemade granola is also great for $7. My kids love their pancake. This is one of the best Egg Benedict Iβve known. Coffee is ππ½Service is ππ½
One of the best breakfast spots in town. Has many vegetarian options which gives them 5 stars. Coffee was exceptional.
City State diner serves excellent food and they brought it out quickly! I ordered the mile high for lunch. The eggs were excellent and the breakfast potatoes were seasoned perfectly. I would definitely come back and try more dishes.
Very cute place. Food and Atmosphere were great. Friendly staff. Clean
Great food, creative menu, experienced and unfailingly friendly service staff who always keep your coffee cup full and hot. With their high volume of business and large customer base, they still managed to remember how the regulars like their eggs cooked, no small feat. A good spot for medium to larger size groups, and very accommodating to families and small children (old man grumble, grumble, but charitably, the Next Generation has to come from somewhere, I presume). Overall a very well done locally owned class asked for breakfast and lunch. Support your local owners who do it well, and these people do, consistently, and over the years.March 24, 2018 UpdateI wasnt able to get there early as I usually do to avoid the crowd and wait, but the staff grab me and immediately put me at a spot on the counter so I had no wait at all. I had the crab hash, but unfortunately the waitress either didnt hear me or the cook missed the instruction to poach my eggs hard, so it went back for a redo, and everything was fine from there on out. My coffee was kept full, which is an occasional issue here when they are busy. Maybe thats one advantage of sitting at the counter? In any event, overall another successful visit to a neighborhood standby with very friendly staff, and generally consistent food. I might say this restaurant could benefit from a chalkboard with rotating specials to change things up a little bit more so regulars dont get bored and occasionally gets surprised!.
What can I say? Come here for breakfast and leave full and smiling. Our waiter was Kyle. A pretty chill dude with tons of character. The service was great, food came fast, and beyond delicious. Those potatoes blew my mind and the chicken sausage was delicious.Love the old school diner vibe and even the detail of the old school style butter tabs.Donβt change City State Diner!
They get an extra star because in part I was a fool: i wanted real grits & foolishly ordered them as a side option, even though it said seared grits. Distracted, I failed to ask questions. Not sure what I imagined, but grits are NOT POLENTA. Welp, they served me f___king polenta.I forget that the stores here try to pass polenta as grits. How hard can it be to order real grits online? They had an opportunity to offer something uncommon but alas, the effort must have been overwhelming... lolIll check in again down the road & re-rate.
Food was fantastic! Service average. The waitress came filled up coffee and said to us its over there if you need anymore. Lol. Ok.

Great food, great service, great atmosphere and Id come back just for the coffee because it was great too.
I got the gravy train - classic style biscuits and gravy, bacon was full, with flavor and the perfect amount of crisp and eggs over easy done right. The fruit bowl was ample and not just melons like some places. The wait wasnt long (15-20 min) on the weekend - which is amazing considering portland. The dish needed some more gravy in my opinion and I didnt notice the specials on the board until after I had ordered. Everything else was great in an diner that makes you feel at home in a small town. The triangles are grits, my friend enjoyed them and said its hard to find this style
Excellent breakfast. Plenty of vegetarian options. Great outdoor patio space.
Great biscuits and gravy. Loved the fries. Eggs were over easy (a lot of places over cook their eggs).
Great menu options. Love the Benedict. Will definitely return.
Food was good but some of the potatoes were not cooked all the way.
I was told 20 minutes was the wait to get a table. An hour and 20 minutes later I am still trying to get a table with a toddler in my arms and had to leave from being to hungry. It shows alot about the values of this establishment. Dont tell a customer something then try not to make any effort to fix our issue.. I talked to you guys on 3 separate occasions and sorry and avoiding me was your solution. I will never come here again. I am popular on this reviewing platform and I know others will see this and I stay away from a place that doesnt value upset customers with valid issues. Ps... the hostess wouldnt make eye contact which is a red flag in my opinion. I give this establishment 2 thumbs down and a fart. Shane outβ
Great breakfast spot with delicious options to choose from. You can certainly tell that their pancakes of the day are homemade. Eggs Benedict are delicious. They have a variety of dishes for everyones taste buds!! It is a small spot so there is usually a wait. Service could be a bit better. Still a great spot, definitely recommend checking it out!
Share youre Breakfast surrounded by happy shiny people in a popular foodie hangout
Benedicts!!! Got the crispy prosciutto Benedict with perfect poached egg and an excellent creamy hollandaise sauce with either potatoes or grits, both are excellent. Love the outdoor seating arrangement. Great vibes for a classic Portland dining experience.
Maddie and the entire team at City State Diner and Bakery completely saved the day with their delicious sandwiches!I was having an extremely hard time finding a place to pick up lunch for a small, socially distanced lunch for an executive meeting at work. With dietary constraints of the attendees, an early start time and my go to catering company out of commission, I was in a panic. From the moment the phone was answered to the time I picked up the order, everyone was extremely pleasant to work. The sandwiches and salads were a huge hit. I am pretty sure that I ordered most of their lunch offerings and can attest to them all being raved about by the group. While I hope to never be in this pickle again, I feel good knowing that they are willing to help. CSDB is well deserving of the praise and everyones patronage.
Good eats, odd location for traffic and noise. Good experience overall. Good Benedict with lots of options, big Bloody Mary menu as well. Would recommend and would return.
Fire af. Got here early before the morning crowd, the staff was nice and the food was quick. Try the biscuits and gravy. Visiting here from Central CA. Glad we stopped by :)
The biscuits and gravy were terrible. Some kind of dry flatbread served with paste like gray and no flavor. They tried to cover it up with a decoration of paprika sprinkled on top. Absolutely the worst biscuits and gravy I have ever eaten.
Gravy Train was great bacon and poached eggs atop delicious biscuits and covered in awesome gravy served with roast potatoes. Absolutely loved it!
Great food but the price for eggs & potatoes has gotten too high in this city. About $40 for 2 scrambles, coffee & the tip.
Great eggs benedict and chicken fried steak, reasonably priced and friendly. Plenty of outdoor seating during covid
Owner steps up and supports our community
Longer wait but limited seating due to The Rona. Had the amazing meatloaf with gravy... Had?! Sorry... Inhaled it! Worth every minute I waited. They need wifi, thought it was weird to have a password posted then tell me they dont have it. Sillines cost a star! π€―π€£βοΈβ₯οΈ
Their Eggs Benedict cured my hangover. Actual magic. 10/10 would recover from binge drinking here again.
Best restaurant eggs Ive ever had, bacon was amazing, and service was good
If you dont want to feel like every other breakfast is inferior to city state DONT COME HERE. IT WILL REDEFINE BREAKFAST
Husband says it was the best benedict hes ever had! Great heated outdoor seating, and tasty breakfast. Fast service on a Saturday morning.
Food was soooo good. Great prices! Their grits are made into pie shapes which is very unique.
Let every Englishman consider himself accursed he was not here on this day ;this momentous day Indeed those famous lines from Shakespeare flowed with elegance through my mind as I tucked into the eggs Benedict which was quite simply a divine experience. Excellent cuisine my dear fellows of whuch I have the fondest memories particularly when travelling on the 38 bus to Piccadilly Circus either in ghastly heatit driving rain The welcome was also second to none. Perhaps you should open another establishment in Mayfair, London
Great food of great quality but a little expensive.
Good breakfast, great value.
βI should make a Yelp account just to give this place a reviewβ -boyfriendBest breakfast Iβve had in Portland!
For the price, Id prefer slightly larger portions. Flavors were good, but not memorable. I tried a few breakfast standards. Some of their more signature items might be better. Service was great.
Best pancake breakfast south of 84
First time and most definitely wonβt be my last!! Great service and the food was even better!!!!! I enjoyed the sausage and gravy combo πͺπΎπ₯° most definitely will make this a place to dine often.
Great food! Though I think they need a sign letting customers know to sign in upon arrival, their current system is a bit confusing for new customers .
Great crab hash....nice outside seating.
Among one of the best breakfasts Iβve ever had
We ate outdoors and it was very easy to find, the food was good. The only drawback is you place your own order, take care of your refreshments. If you leave hungry, its your own fault. We are going back again! Picture on the next visit.
Pretty decent place to grab some breakfast. I wouldnt call it a Portland institution but the food is good and we would go here again.
My experience at this place was just okay. We were driving in from Eugene and called when we were getting closer to Portland. We asked how long the wait time was and were told 20 minutes. We tried to get on the list since our GPS said wed make it in time, but we werent allowed to call in. We had to be there in person. At the time, it was no big deal, I could understand why they have that rule. Once we got there, we were told to write our name down on the waitlist. It was for a group of 6 and we werent given an estimated wait time. We waited outside in the rain, and saw many people being seated before us. No one came to check in on us or keep us updated. After 45 minutes of waiting, we checked the list and we were skipped. I assumed that its because they needed a table big enough for 6, as this is a small place and their seats were not big. After an hour of waiting, we were finally called and told to order at the counter and sit down at a designated table. Everything was pretty much self service, which we didnt know. Even when they brought out the food, the employee stood next to me with distance, stretched out her arm, and handed me each plate to distribute. I mean, I get were going through a pandemic, but this is the 1st time I encounter an employee do something like this. It just felt odd for some reason. Maybe it was just the way she stayed quiet and put the plates to my face without saying anything. As for the food, it was ok. Im sorry, but it was not worth the wait and I didnt personally think it was as good as it was hyped up to be. I had the breakfast sandwich. My wife and friend shared the best of both worlds. The other people in the group ordered eggs Benedict and another breakfast plate that I cant remember very well. My breakfast sandwich was small and good, but nothing too special in my opinion. Id say a little overpriced for what I got. The biscuits and gravy were ok. They arent one of the best Ive had, but I would order them again. The egg benedict was actually pretty good. Id definitely order that again. The coffee was good too. Its nice that you can go up and refill it as much as you want. Overall, Id have to give this place 3 out of 5 stars. Im in between with this one. I would definitely go back and give them one more try. They have really good reviews and Id like to see if a 2nd visit would change my rating. Next time I go, I want to make sure I get an updated wait time once Im there, because 1 hour was too long for the service and quality/taste/price of food. Im trying to change up my review style, so here are things I liked and things Id like to see the restaurant change.Things I Liked:- Coffee- Eggs Benedict- Employee at counter was very friendly and welcoming- Indoor/Outdoor seating available. Outdoor seating is partly covered and has heating- Good amount of food options on the menuThings Id Like To See Improved:- Wait list. Id like to see the employees maintain communication with customers that are waiting outside in the cold and rain. Please provide updates on wait times. It would have also been nice and helpful to offer us split seating as well. Some people mind, some people dont. We wouldve been fine with sitting separately.- COVID Precautions- It seems like the restaurant is trying to be safe in some ways, but there could be improvement on some things. You have to order at the counter where they give you utensils and your cups. Then you take your cup to a counter and pour coffee yourself. You also have to add cream and sugar yourself. The handles arent getting cleaned/disinfected after every person grabs them. When the employee came with our food, it felt weird to have her give me all the plates to distribute. I understand the safety part of it, but if safety is priority, why not just set the food down somewhere and have people pick it up from a table/counter?One last thing:Thank you for doing your best during these times! I know youre all working hard. This is just my perspective as a first time customer! π
Delicious food and fast service
Great food, awesome staff and fun atmosphere
Ordered takeout, came in to order. Server ignored me and helped another guest first, okay whatever:/ cashier was kind of nice but when I asked questions about pastries server wasnβt very pleasant with their answers . Portion sizes are small not sure if itβs because I got food to go . I love so close to this place and now Iβm disappointed with service and portion sizes.
Just got to town. Stuck at home and City State hooked me up! Chris was awesome and delivered in no time. Great breakfast (scrambled eggs, potatoes, rustic toast) and delicious coffee. Iβm from NYC and weβre demanding about our breakfasts/brunches and this food was perfect! One of my new and forever faves!
Tasty diner experience.
Excellent bacon blue salad and iced tea, first time trying non breakfast item and glad I did. Super nice staff, tables appropriately distant and sanitized. Lovely outside under the trees.
What a wonderful place to get some food!Excellent customer service and I must say Jessica was quite sincere and pleasant. She went above and beyond.I highly recommend coming here to grab a bite to eat do you will not be disappointed! Thanks guys!!!
4 covered outside tables and 3 uncovered outside tables. Order inside at the counter and have food/drink brought to you seated at a table. Delicious food and great bloody Mary!
Breakfast was perfect..staff was too.
Great and affordable food, friendly service, thanks Maddy!!! The outdoor seating is heated and well protected from the weather.
Excellent food, service, and outdoor seating. My new go-to for weekday breakfast.
Outdoor seating, good food mostly reasonable prices, good coffee
Great for breakfast... probably still... hold off on lunch, wait till full staff back - last few experiences left a bunch to be desired - cancelled a large company order due to their shortage of menu items and grease on fries being almost rancid - embarrasing to have my consultants in town all making funny faces as they ate the fries.Hoping to give them my business again soon, a bit hesitant, perhaps in 2021
Mother of God the food is amazing
