I love this place, especially for Korean ingredients. The owners are nice when you have questions. The produce selection is small but I’ve been happy with my veggies, and there’s also a great selection of kitchen items. It’s clean and well organized, and they’re taking Covid very seriously which is great!
I went in today close to closing. I asked for help finding some of my items and the woman working helped me grab everything on my list. She was so helpful and kind. There was a great selection. I am looking to make several Korean dishes over the next week or two and they had everything I needed. It was worth the three hour drive to get there. I will definitely be going back again!
The owners are so welcoming and friendly! Theyre always willing to help us find things and so very patient with our small kids. Love this store. Great selection, very reasonable prices.
This store is so freaking great! It is well stocked and typically has exactly what youre looking for or the staff will have a good suggestion for alternatives, other locations, or will order an item for you. There are so many great goodies there! Concerning the owners, they are the best. No kidding! Super sweet, personal, and helpful. They are always willing to give advice and suggest the best of certain products. Plus, they are wonderful to the community, helping out when they can, and they were super conscious and safe during COVID, which is always appreciated.
I’ve been a long time fan and customer of this store, and only just realized I hadn’t left a proper review!Sun is a wonderful experience, all around. The owners and their family are amazing people, and have always been a pleasure to shop from and to know. They are highly considerate of safety protocols for both their customers and theirselves. They also provide some of the best recipes and cooking tips along with the corresponding products! The shop, itself, has a bit of everything you could need and is very well managed and stocked. There’s plenty of gifts, cooking tools, sweets, savoy snacks, cooking and baking supplies, spices, drinks, sauces, cold and frozen items, fresh veg/ingredients, and more! I’ll always be thankful for finding Sun, and even more so for the years of kindness and amazing food!
This is a pretty small Asian market that carries a decent amount of spices, sauces and other non perishable foods. They have a VERY limited selection of the other items most markets would carry such as frozen foods, produce and prepared noodles, pickles or other cooked items. If there werent so few options for Asian markets in the area Id rate them lower but beggars cants be choosers.
A Staple of the community with a large selection of quality asian goods at value. With a kind staff and clean environment it is always a pleasant experience.
Convenient “little” grocery store. Don’t let the small space deceive you; this market has everything from produce, unique snacks (the Calbee potato chips are my favorite) and candies, sake, genuine/traditional ingredients, as well as beautiful cookware and tea sets. I always find something new here- and I don’t have to pay an arm and a leg to do so (though, I would).Definitely check out the noodle selection and frozen food section.Support this amazing, local business!
If there is a perfect way to keep customers safe while shopping during the pandemic, Sun Market is doing it. Their entry system is painless and efficient, their protocols in-store allow for doubling back for missed items while not feeling crowded or rushed, and their customer service is - as always - absolutely top-notch. 6/5 stars. Seriously, this is a model for how to do things.
Nice little Asian market in downtown Portland with a nice selection of Japanese, Chinese and Korean items. Incredibly well-organized! Bags of rice, nice selection of sauces, various seasonings including a very good price for furikake, and even canned boba (bubble tea)
This is our favorite market. The owners are extremely kind and thoughtful and have been very careful especially during the pandemic to ensure that everyone who is in the store not only has clear directions to ensure the safety and health of each other, but the community as well. Always happy to give them business and support their efforts to provide for the community with their thoughtful selection and mindful practice.
Absolute heaven of a grocery store during covid. only business around here taking it completely seriously. makes me feel very safe and happy to shop there. wonderful selection, good prices, and the owners are incredibly nice and helpful if you have questions. if you come early enough they have onigiri at the counter, and theyre very good! cannot recommend this place enough
Always have what I am looking for. Owners are very kind and freindly.
This store has the best food and treats.
A well-stocked Asian market with friendly, helpful staff - and the strongest covid protocols around. Thanks, Sun Market!
I have known the family and shopped there for 20 years. You will not find better service and better advise anywhere else in the area. The covid safety procedures are exemplar. The food selection is superb. Thank you guys!
If you like kimchi get the grandmothers recipe! I just got some and its hands down the best Ive ever had! Warning though, its spicy!
Moved to Maine in 2020 and this is the best market for any of my wifes and our needs. The staff is super friendly and helpful when making suggestions. They have a large selection and a lot to try. Definitely a great place to stop in for anyone visiting Portland!!!
A wonderful place to get just about anything you need for East Asian cooking. The owners are so kind, caring, and will help you find anything you need. Plus, incredibly COVID-safe!
A great place to find items unavailable in the usual food stores, and kitchen necessities of rare availability! Friendly owners are a big plus.
I’ve have loved this store for twenty years. They are always friendly and the store is always clean. As for COVID-19 precautions, they are about the most stringent around and I applaud them!
This is a wonderful asian market filled with a tremendous amount of products that are extremely hard to find. I am a big ramen fan, and I was impressed by their vast selection of brands and flavors. My daughter loved all of the different snacks and candies, especially the Popin Cookin products. I love asian beer and was able to find Sapporo, which is my absolute favorite. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. I will definitely be coming back to Sun Market again soon!
A nice little market, covid restrictions are easily understood and marked, employees were super helpful. Found everything that I wanted, they do have a parking lot in the back as well 🙂
Excellent experience. They have applied strict regulations for shoppers to ensure everyones safety during the pandemic, and they enforce them. I felt welcomed and completely safe. The staff are friendly and helpful, and the aisles well-stocked. I cannot recommend them highly enough
This is truly one of my favorite local gems in Portland Maine. I dont think I could survive here without Sun Oriental Market. From the classic staples (dumplings, ramens, sauces) to the more speciality items, Sun Market has made the past year of Covid-home eating a lot less sad. If you like asian food at all, you will NEED to come here. Heck, if you have cultured tastebuds, come! Also, Sun Market was the absolute safest/cleanest place in all of Portland at the height of Covid. This is a perfect reflection of the care the owners put into their business, even at the expense of profit.
The best store in town, a little bit of everything you might want or need.
Really cool place! Helpful staff, and great COVID protocol!
Literally the best grocery store ever! Owners are awesome, selection is great, produce is 🔥 and they’re really good about Covid guidelines so I feel safe recommending them to anyone.
Covid protocol was much appreciated. A 5 minute wait outside was worth it for the help I received and the friendly atmosphere. I will be back.
Sun Oriental is doing a phenomenal job with their COVID protocol. We stopped by to replace a spoon that had broken and felt so comfortable with their commitment to safety that we ended up leaving with a whole shopping cart of food, too. Good and interesting products, great prices, nice people. Thank you and keep it up!
Great prices, awesome covid precautions, friendly staff. Makes for a great and stress free shopping experience.
We travel 30 minutes to get the best fresh ginger, bok choy and bean sprouts. Also spices are available and inexpensive. I trust the owner and frequently ask for his advice.
This is a wonderful spot with lots of amazing products and friendly professional owners who are very diligent about COVID. 10/10 every time.
Great selection of Korean, Japanese, Thai, and Chinese (and more) staples and specialty goods. This place has been a community institution since my childhood, with friendly and helpful owners and great quality food at a great price point. Its a must for Portland cooks and anyone who loves good quality ingredients for Asian food.
We drive over an hour and a half to this store at least once every few months. We’ve been doing this for years. Authentic products that are hard to find locally. Today will be our last time here. Before I share my experience, I’d like to say this is by far the best practice of keeping customers safe in any store I have seen. Customers must wear a face mask, wash their hands before entering, grab a cart and they do satanize each cart after use. Very organized! When my daughter and I first walked up, we tried entering the front door, the woman said you need to go around back to enter. Talking to my daughter, I said, “we don’t have time for this” as we had an appointment 20 minutes later down the road.We walked all the way around the long building to the back and were waiting in line to wash our hands. The gentleman worker approached me (in front of other customers) and said, “ oh! So you decided to come in after all?” I asked him what he meant and he mocked me “we don’t have time for this.” In shock, I said that I was talking to my daughter and asked if he would rather we left the store. He then said, “You seem to have an issue with following the rules.” I told him I had absolutely no issue, but I did have an issue with the way he was treating me. This was actually just after I had told my daughter I liked their setup. Felt completely discriminated against, and attacked. We will find another similar store to accommodate our needs that treats their customers equal!
I love this store! I get my lumpia wraps there
This place is my favorite! Although small, this store is packed with an awesome selection of goods at affordable prices. They have wonderful spices, teas, sauces, candies and fresh noodles, among other things. The store is always clean and the owners are very friendly and helpful. Also, there are free parking spaces around back (Park St), which is very convenient, especially since they have a hand washing station set up inside the back entrance.
I cannot adequately express my love for Sun in words. It’s small but mighty, stocks a large variety of products, is well organized and clean, and has very affordable prices. And the owners are so so nice - I always leave here smiling, with everything I needed in my bag. So grateful they’re here!Pro tip: they do have (limited) parking spots in the back! I was street parking and hauling everything for blocks for the longest time until I realized. It’s a small lot with a few spots set aside for their business and they very reasonably ask that you don’t abuse the privilege of parking there. Suits the needs of a quick shopping trip perfectly.
Friendly people. The place is smaller than I expected. I got some of the things I want .
A wonderful shop that offers a wide variety of goods, including home-made food. The family that runs it are super friendly and it all adds up to a great shopping experience.
A trip to Portland is never complete without a stop here! With COVID19 the stringency of protocol is SPOT ON! They are taking this pandemic seriously and it is very much appreciated! The world would be a better and CLEANER PLACE if everyone acted like they do at Sun Oriental Foods!!!And, as always, everything a cook would want to find at an Asian market with very reasonable prices!
I have always loved the Sun Market & it turns out they are doing a stellar job keeping folks safe from Covid. Many other stores seem to be doing the minimum, but the things Sun Market is doing may actually work and are not just for the optics. If you would like to shop in a safe place run by folks who care, this is your spot! Great herb and spice selection too, for any cuisine.
Great food that can be hard to find and friendly and helpful owners and employees
Great unique merchandise, super well organized and the owners are working very hard to make sure their store is as safe as possible. I felt really safe from spreading COVID19. Anyway a wonderful experience I plan to go again soon!
The best
Very conscious of COVID and keeping customers safe. Has classic food from most Asian cultures and extremely nice and helpful workers.
Very helpful. Amazing selection
First time in there never even heard of this place me and my friends go in there covid procedures were good what was not okay was be told to leave because we werent buying anything and we were holding up a line when other customers were going slower then us will not be shopping in this store again
We love Sun Oriental, and their procedures during covid makes it really safe. Got great advice from the owner on which sakes to get.
Sun Oriental Market always has delicious, fresh kimchi and other great Asian foods. The Korean owners are taking the pandemic seriously, so shopping is safe and stress-free.
This place is doing an excellent job of keeping people sage with their COVID-19 procedures. They are the best. B
Such an amazing little store, run by an equally amazing couple.
My family and I absolutely love Sun. The couple who own the store are genuine, friendly and helpful. Since we started going there, we have received many wonderful suggestions from sake and plum wine to rice cookers. They have a great selection of Maneki Neko (Lucky cats) and dishes, chopsticks and beginners chopsticks, wonderful, quality knives, and prime sushi ingredients. The store is clean and well-stocked without being cluttered. The ramune and onigiri are a great snack for my 45 minute drive home!
Very good selection of foods, even quail egg which our dog loves. The owner was very condescending while also being nice? I understand Covid procedures and their signage was very clear but we were spoken to like children entering a classroom. Two people together should not need to use two carts, we came together so we won’t be spreading anything to ourselves.. Also there was a child, around 9 by the looks, who wasn’t wearing a mask. Makes me assume they have favoritism towards regular customers, which is not how Covid works. My boyfriend mother has tried to purchase an entire box of ramen multiple times, due to living 40 minutes away and being disabled and shes been turned away because he assumes she’s selling them? Off putting
From many years ago, I was impressed with this place...until a few days ago. My daughter and her mother (my Japanese ex-wife) illegally parked in their lot last Saturday night. They were towed, which could be reasonably expected as they had parked illegally. What wasn’t expected was that the tow truck caused some small damage to the car - a low mileage late model car. And the towing company tried to cover up their mistake and blame my daughter for the damage. And to make matters worse, apparently the market was aware of what happened and tried to join in with the dishonest driver. The whole incident leaves a bad taste, but it appears that the market must get a kickback for towing charges.Mysteriously, when asked about surveillance tapes, they claimed that the camera was disabled because of some kind of construction, and they volunteered information showing that they were already aware of the incident. Why would they even know that?We are still waiting for copies of the ‘nonexistent’ tapes from the towing company. A rip-off is a rip-off, and it’s disconcerting that the store joined in with the sleazy behavior of the tow driver and his company.I know of at least 2 good customers that they’ve lost at this point, and it makes one wonder what else they could be dishonest about.
Just went in, and as someone whose uncle just passed away from COVID-19, I had zero issues with their set-up. You wear a mask, go around to the back entrance, wash your hands, wait for a cart, and practice physical distancing. Despite our low case count in Maine, people young and old are still dying here and across the country. The Markets practices tell me the owners have a deep, uncommon respect and concern for their community and for their patrons (I was given another mask, this one with a nice filter, before I left, which I really appreciated). If that, along with the great selection, isnt a selling point, I dont know what is. Id urge people to shop here.
Wonderful asian store that totally rocks!
Although I live in the countryside, Sun Oriental is oneof the only reasons I trek into the busy city and endure the bustle. This is a clean, organized and well stocked store with so many ingredients and snacks to look at! It’s always a treat to score my favorite candies and spices. Their tofu is priced well and they sell home goods towards the front of the store, including knives and cooking utensils. I love to grab my wakame seaweed here, and pick up little treats for loved ones. Lychee candy is a must! Their staff has always been polite and answer any questions you have about their products. A respectably maintained store with great prices. I only wish I could brave the city more.
Good, had almost everything I needed, but after going to Veranda Asian market, I wished I had just went there first. Sun Oriental has lots of nice Chinese porcelain dinnerware.
Sun Oriental Market is absolutely wonderful. They carry an abundance of Japanese goods that I have been unable to find anywhere else in the state. The owners are kind, friendly, and helpful. They are a gem in this community.
Rude and condescending, borderline angry, when pushing their prison camp Covid precautions. Your store and you can do what you want, but people who come in are not animals. You had the audacity to talk to me like I was garbage in front of my son. We left instead of dealing with the attitude. Never coming back.
Absolutely love this place! Only place I know of to get Pocari, and Melon bread. Really customer friendly as well. Always a great stock of product, and the prices especially for the rice cookers are excellent. The atmosphere is down to earth and inviting. I normally drive an hour to shop here, because of the great experience. 5 stars!
So for the family that parked illegally and got towed:I’m sorry you’d Feel the way you do. BUTI have no cameras in the lot nor do I have any control over what thetowing companies do as they have their obligations. The only dishonest this that has been done here is that your daughterKnowingly took advantage of my business property. Also, I do not make any money off the tows...Thanks have a wonderful day.
This store is amazing! Affordable, wide variety of products and a ton of inexpensive fresh hard-to-find asian veggies. If you ask, the owner will give you the pro tips on whatever you’re cooking - he’s helped me perfect my Chinese broccoli game. 10/10 would recommend.
In my opinion, this is the best oriental food store in Portland. They carry a wide variety of Japanese and Korean foods (always fresh) and many Asian gifts & related products. They keep a very clean store and are very responsive to customer requests. The owners are quite friendly and it is a joy shopping there. Try Sun Oriental Market once and Ill bet you keep going back for more.
Theres plenty to find there. The owners take all the precautions for COVID.
For a small place, its awesome. The type of place that would fit right into Bostons Chinatown. If youre nice to the owners, they will respond in kind. Super friendly. I love this place!
The person in charge is very rude. and it only asks you to leave the place without kindly explaining how to access the store. super rude.
Its always a pleasure shopping here. Found everything I needed!
Extremely helpful and friendly owners. Great selection. Clean and fresh. Thanks for providing this amazing place!!!
Best little market around. Great prices and selection. I usually just wander the aisles until I put together a meal:)
Nice family owns this place - very helpful. Nice clean location. Frozen, refrigerated, jarred, dry.. every option and products written in many languages. Only place Ive been able to find tteokbokki! Non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks can be purchased here.
Its not the huge market like ones I was going in Texas, but they have what you want, theyre nicely careful post COVID, and the folks are nice - AND ( a veryb important feature to ME! -) they have prices on everything. The oldest Asian market in the area, go here - even if youre not immediately camp cooking this kinda cuisine! {Eat mO shrimp chips :-) }
Safe procedures, good range of products, friendly and efficient service
Went to this store today and my girlfriend and friends were told to leave because they were following procedures and waiting to go down aisles that had people in them. After they were kicked out I was rushed out of the store too, and almost wasnt going to be able to purchase the item I wanted because of a $5 card minimum. But I wasnt allowed to go back and quickly grab something.
Love this place; Ive been shopping here for over ten years. The family who works it are friendly and helpful. I often go in for Japanese groceries and snacks, but theyve got a variety of things, and they always have what I need. Handy place for ingredients to make vegetarian dishes.
They ALWAYS have what Im looking for. The owners are usually the only ones working. Very friendly and great prices for the quantity you get.
Condescending service. Procedure they insist due to COVID makes it impossible to get food and make the waiting line very slow and inefficient. They should make people move by putting certain time limitation as opposed to blaming customers who get stuck by front people refusing to move and standing for a very long time. Not happy with the customer service and they way they speak to customers.
Fantastic store and owners! Weve been coming here for 15 years and now that were really in to Indian cooking, we get all our spices, dal, noodles, cilantro, coconut milk and ginger root here. Really nice market!
Such a friendly place. Great food selection and a very nice atmosphere. Should see this plce atleast once if ever visiting Portland.
This is my favorite Asian market in the area. Wonderful, friendly, family run shop that has an incredible diversity of products at good prices. Impossible to leave this place in a bad mood. :)
Very helpful, showed me where products were, fast checkout, very pleasant interactions with checker and mgr(?owner).
Friendly employees who are always ready to provide assistance, convenient parking in the rear of the store and great selection of products.
Outstanding selection of premium ingredients and cookware with friendly service. They even have a few free parking spaces in back.
Great selection and customer service.
Love the selection of items. Very helpful staff helped me to make a great noodle dish.
Good Asian grocery
A long standing favorite, on my most recent visit I was pleased to see an expanded selection of sashimi grade frozen seafood.
Good selection of food, comforting snacks, and cute trinkets. A grand place to find a new favorite.
Favorite oriental market in Portland. Has all of the staples for authentic and quick ramen. Lots of spices sauces and noodles. Very friendly service
Small. Clean. Good selection. Great quality veggies. Very friendly. Not the cheapest. This is my go to for Asian shopping in Maine. Not much parking next to the building. If you want Asian, specifically Korean, and dont want to travel to many stores, this is the place to go.
Simple wonderful, learn something new every visit, options endless, favorite food stop of the area
Really kind staff with a great variety of Asian foods and objects.
Consistently stocked with delicious goods, and it is the only place I go to for black garlic and MSG. A must stop for visiting downtown portland.
The store is a little small, but very well organized, clean, everything is labelled, they have a great selection of Asian groceries, and the prices are good. They have rosewater for 1/4 the price that whole foods does. Their spice selection is great. Many spices used in Japanese, Chinese, and some for Indian cooking too.
Amazing shop in downtown for all your Asian food needs! Owners are extremely friendly, helpful and will go out of their way to make your experience a great one in the store!
Excellent and friendly staff!
I love this market, they have a large, tidy, variety of items in a small space. From food staples to cooking utensils to bento they are a great one stop doing for your Asian cooking needs (including Indian!). They also have easy to grab items like drinks, mochi, snacks, and ice cream. They also have frozen seafood, meat, and fresh herbs. Ive always received excellent, friendly service here.
