Excellent selection in every department. Very large produce section with lots of fresh choices, wonderful selection of meat and seafood. Plenty of dry goods. Prepared food. Even a bakery and a florist. This is one of the largest Asian grocery stores I have visited. Easy to get to from the greater Portland area. Certainly worth coming over the bridge from Vancouver!!!
Theres a smaller Hong Phat on Prescott, much closer to my house, and while it is a cute little shop, its a pale shadow of this much larger location on 82nd. Like Fubonn further south, this super-sized specialty supermarket is among the best in its class, catering to its customers and carrying items that are not found in traditional (re: American) grocery stores. While Ive been here several times, and will often detour specifically out of the way to shop here, my wife had never been. That changed on the way home from a recent dinner at a restaurant not far away. I told her I wanted to stop in and grab a few things, but she was a bit tired, and wasnt up for the additional stop. However, when we arrived, she changed her tune, and wanted to see what was inside.I dont think she had any idea what she was in for!I only stopped in for about $10 worth of stuff. We ended up spending about $80, as she found more and more things she wanted to try! And as we were in a bit of a rush, we only perused about a third of the store! I shudder to think how much well spend the next time we come here! Maybe I should continue to shop here alone!? Kidding, of course.Alright, enough with the anecdotal nonsense! What actually makes Hong Phat special? Fresh (massive!) produce, some of it exotic to Western palates; snacks, sauces, spices and seasonings that encompass the entire Asian oeuvre; a hot deli (Lotus Kitchen) and bakery; teas, sake, soda, soju and other delicious alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages; all the best rice and ramen choices; seafood galore (want a whole frozen octopus? its here!); cooking supplies and utensils; frozen dumplings, shumai and more! Its all here!Well, almost. Like every other Asian supermarket that isnt Uwajimaya or H-Mart, youre not going to find the high quality cuts of meat like Kobe, Wagyu, etc. For some reason, those appear to be the exclusive purview of Japanese grocery chains. They do have just about every other cut and part of chicken, pork and beef imaginable, though. I just wish someone, anyone else, would step up to the plate and carry these unparalleled portions of protein! Why is it so hard to find?!Other than what I mentioned above, theres very little negative to say about Hong Phat. Sure, it can feel a little cluttered at times, due to the presence of half-opened boxes, acting as makeshift shelves, gumming up aisles or endcaps, or floors that seem... less pristine than other places. But all of those things are minor nit-picks for what is an otherwise incredible store with an astounding variety of quality products from around the globe. Only by comparison with the true titans of the Asian grocery world (Uwajimaya and H-Mart) does Hong Phat fall a little short of perfection, and even that is mostly due to the privilege of being spoiled for choice here in Portland. Hong Phat is a winner, no matter how you slice it...although I wish theyd slice up some thin strips of beef for sukiyaki, once in a while.
Good pricing, great variety and the cashier took extra care with the breakable items that we purchased. When we needed help one of the workers helped without a fuss.
A great place for foods from all over Asia! They have an amazing selection of fresh fruits and vegetables as well as fresh and frozen meats of all types and varieties. Lots of different types or rice, spices, and noodles. Friendly staff and always bustling with action but never too busy.
I wanted to like this store. Im sure my criticism says more about me than the establishment but that place was dirty. The floors were dirty, the cases were dirty, inside and out, and the deli area was dingy. My daughter spotted shrimp rolls that granted, looked delicious, but they were set out on a table. No refrigeration, at all, just lying on a table. Shrimp! Yeesh. If I need a specific wrapped spice Ill go back but not casual shopping. 😑
I prefer this place over Fubonn. It’s a little cramped and hard to social distance but the cheaper prices and location make it worth it. I especially love the Lotus Kitchen inside Hong Phat. They have yummy fried bbq pork bao, a variety of banh mi, thai tea, and grilled pork belly just to name a few things. Today, I got the “Grilled Pork Lunch Box”. I don’t know why I’ve never gotten it before. It’s the same type of dish you would get at a place like Pho Van but half the price. Everything I’ve tried from the pre-made section has been delicious. They also carry breads and pastries from An Xuyen Bakery on Foster. So good!!
This market has a giant selection at affordable prices. The produce alone will have me coming back over and over again!
Incredible selection of obscure ingredients and products. Fantastic produce and delicious sections. Love this place
Love going to this place and giving them support. They work hard to bring a variety of food in so that we can feel at home and have healthy food for our bodies. Thank you
Very good selections of Asian products, I find most of what I need here. Deli is always wonderful, has many ready to eat hot foods and drinks.
I loved the frozen seafood section. It got me excited to cook that night! Great deals on shrimp! However.. some parts of the store are poorly labelled such as some of the aisles and shelves.
Just wanted to take a look at this store since it was in our travel zone. The bldg. used to be a Fred Meyers store. It now has a super store with Asian food products. Tanks with live fish and lobster. Meat dept, vegetables and much much more. Around the store are small asian businesses similar to a mall setting. I.e. mall 205.
Good assortment of fresh fruits when in season. Overal good store
Great store for all your needs friendly staff easy parking thanks
All the basic Asian produce and groceries you can think of and a ready-made deli.
Smells bad.. flies everywhere. Pretty gross. Prices were good tho.
I love any Asian store..I just love being able to buy the items I get to make thai tea and I love the cookie biscuits!! butter coconut flavor is the bestest!! I make the fresh thai tea that comes in bulk bags but I also get the packets just in case I run out of half and half in the middle of the night and I dont want to go to store I can use one of the packets..
My favorite asian mart in Portland.Spicy noodles, Shin bowls, everything to make garden/spring rolls. They literally have everything except I didnt see Crack sauce.. Still a neat place and everyone is so polite.
Im not sure if I have ever had authentic food from the ATL, before tasting Ericas. Shes busy because her food is so good. Also, Erica is a nice person: Served with a smile as the sign says. Just be ready to say your order when youre up.Her food tastes homemade. Everything about the experience feels authentic and I will go again soon.
Disappointed they didn’t have lettuce, cucumbers, shallots, or fresh seafood. Big market so guess I had high expectations but lettuce and cucumbers I feel should be in every grocery store..
More interesting stuff than I know what yo do with. Clean, tidy & very well stocked. Fresh vegetables galore! Every sauce.
Sandwich with pork was phenomenal! 10/10
They have a large variety of exotic an import foods including Local Foods and the staff is always gracious to help
I came here to pick up some groceries, lots of frozen seafood and meats. A lot of Vietnamese products (as expected since the name is Vietnamese), and its quite pricey. Good selection of produce and products in general.
Has a lot of variety items in the store great store to shop
Grate asian food mart. Good prices selection and friendly people.
They have a lot of Oriental Foods here. I was nicely surprised by the great selections.
I was in Vietnamese market heaven! Coming from California where the Asian markets are everywhere...I was happy to find Hong Phat. It was kept clean and the seafood and meat were packaged nicely. Wasnt the typical eeks feeling I get when I debate on whether I really should be purchasing whatever meat from an Asian market. And the deli area where they sell daily made sandwiches and some of my favorite dishes like Banh Cuon,Thit Kho, bakery items are also delicious, and other dishes that you can grab to go for lunch.....I wanted to buy EVERYTHING! Prices seemed reasonably priced. Cant wait to go back!
Lots of variety.Has cookware, meet, fish, noodles, canned foods some produce. Large store.
Good, fresh food and produces at the reasonable price.
The price is cheap and I love their vegetable (on choy or kangkung and yam leaf).. the staff is also friendly.. the waffle and bun are also good.
Best selection. Great customer service. It’s our home away from home.
Huge place. They didnt have what I needed; but a huge produce selection...I did buy other stuff.
Great store for your Asian needs. Looking for Asian herbs, vegetables, and fruits? They got it here. The deli area has a lot of vietnamese to go food made ready. From banh mi, to salad rolls, to rice bento box, to a variety of meats and other great foods. You have to come to see it.
Probably the best selection of produce and meat on the East side - one thing to remember is they have most general “Asian” cuisine items, but they are predominately a Vietnamese market so there will be certain Chinese, Korean, Japanese, etc. cuisine Ingredients that you may not be able to find there. The herbs and fresh leafy greens are fresh and great price and quality.
My weekly shopping place. Everything is fresh and reasonable prices.Love this store
One of the good place to shop for rare Asian foods.
The best grocery store in Portland. If you’re into food and cooking then this is the place to hit. New Seasons is so boring in comparison. So many different varieties of meats and seafood. Yea they have tripe, bones and gizzards! Asians do know how to eat! The staffs are friendly and helpful!
One of our favorites. They have several items in stock all year round, and charge decent prices. It can get busy, but we have never felt completely overwhelmed by large crowds there. The isles are wide enough to actually move, shop, & social distance. They also have a great deli shop section for sandwiches, bun bao, and several other hot & cold foods & drinks.
Got all the vegetables you needed to cook. Just wonderful place to shop. Go there if you love all the fruits and veggies oriental styles...😛
If your looking for anything for Asian cooking its a good place to go to and reasonable prices.
This supermarket is located in what can be considered the Little Saigon neighborhood where there are a lot of Vietnamese-run businesses. The store has freshly made baked goods, veggies, fruits, noodles, and a hundred other products. The staff was friendly and helpful. Ill be back to shop during peak time to see what freshly made food are available. On this visit I came closer to the 9pm closing time.
Vietnamese centered grocery store that will help you get the things you need for the perfect cooked Asian dish at home.
Great selection of produce, meats, and other Asian staples.
Good place. Lot of varieties of produce.
Super selection friendly staff thanks
Hong Phat Food Center has improved so much since it first opened 4 years ago...The cashiers are friendly and helpful. The quality of meat, seafood, fruits, and vegetables are superb. At Lotus Kitchen, which is the store deli, there are so many new hot deli items to choose from. The juice bar now has so many fruit smoothy. I especially love the Lotus Kitchens frozen yogurt. I can rave on and on but I better let you be the judge of that. Come and see for yourself.
Love visiting here, they have a good selection even if it is a little cramped. Make sure to grab some Pandan waffles if they have em!
Do you like food? Ramen? Fresh Fruit? The biggest, freshest ginger root you have ever seen? Exotic candy? Fun beverages? You should go to Hong Phat.
Wish we could have found more beef kung foo noodles. Love my oriental markets in portland.
My favorite Asian grocery store in PDX!
My wife can always find the ingredients she need from r her great asian cooking. I do not know what some of the stuff is, and I can not read all the labels
Great place for all over your Asian food needs
Good place to have some local foods
This place is very convenient and great to shop at. The only issue I had was that when I bought my banh cuon that it had a fairly large plastic shard which would potentially damage my mouth but luckily spotted it earlier on. I would like to remind those to please check before rolling your banh cuon.
If youre a big fish consumer this is the place to go.. Lots of fish and fresh vegetables and fruits..I was looking for ice cream 🍨
OMG the deli is off the charts!
Favorite place to go for lunch. Def get your moneys worth
Great selection of rare and hard to find good items. Parking lot is a friggin zoo. Worst drivers in Portland all shop here so make sure your insurance is current.
This is our neighborhood grocery store and we love it. There a wonderful selection of produce and other items. The prices are really good, and they have a delicious hot deli. I grab fried fish and golden buns almost every time I go. And the staff is always friendly and nice.Edit: hot deli is closed right now, but they sometimes have prepared items for sale directly in front of the deli. Also forgot to mention they have an excellent selection of frozen seafood and other meats.(you can get whole frozen duck which you don’t find a lot of places) There’s also fresh catfish and salmon.
This is the best large Asian (mostly mainland Southeast Asian) grocery I have ever been to. Fantastic cuts of meat, especially pork belly and spare ribs. And whole fresh fish on ice. Their fresh fruits section is awesome: dragonfruit, jack fruit, mangosteens! Their small prepared food counter is great and delicious. Top Notch. A definite winner.
Great Asian grocery with selection of every kind of foods that every ethnic group wants, plus prepared foods such as steamed buns, fried bananas, and much much more. The fresh produce section is to die for in my opinion as they have some fruits that I have not found in any other Portland Asian grocery store and some I have not found outside of southeast Asia, including Rambutans, the beautiful red fruit that looks like a sea urchin, mangosteens, and longons. A must visit if you have a hankering for Asian Foods or miss the fruits that you had when you were there. Jackfruit is typically available, and the stinky durian can also be obtained here.
Excellent Asian Supermarket with regular basics and high quality produce and Asian imports as well as meats and bakery produced by the store. Often open when other places nearby closed for ice storm or Christmas.
Good store. Excellent variety of food and ingredients.
Fabulous for meats, fish, Asian pantry items, fresh non-organic veggies, tasty deli items. Try their pho to go for $12.50
The lemon grass chicken is the best!! Go get some, but go early because it sells out...
My wife likes to go shopping here finds the foods she likes.
When I walked in the lines were super long.Walked around looking for the iteams I needed. They are fully stocked vegetables, fruits, beverages even their deli section. When I was ready to go in line I was stressed on how long the lines were, but it was so quick. I dont think Ive ever been to a place where the lines were so long yet the line moved so quickly.Great job to the cashier and the person bagging my items you both did a Great job!!!!!
Great location with lots of variety of Asian foods. I was thrilled to find persimmons and other Asian fruit and vegetables that I wouldnt normally see at the local grocery store. They had plenty of rice cakes to take home, seafood, and hot food area. Small kimchi selection, was kind of disappointed. I was looking for gimbap as well for a quick snack (one of my childhood favorites) but didnt not see any. Not to worry though, because I can make it myself with all the ingredients from this location!
I always leave from shopping at Hong Phat having spent more than intended. Today I went in for a bottle of tamari and left with a bill over $50! My favorite type of kimchi was on sale, the oxtails looked good, I couldnt resist the lemongrass chicken to add to this evenings dinner, fresh shiitakes, rice noodles are a panty staple, etc. The staff is always efficient and helpful. Love this store.
Great staff. Lots of southeast Asian ingredients
Old moldy produce, open packages. Not very clean... Definitely will not return.
Great prices. Good produce.
The staffs are well being trained. Great service!
Zhongshan I love me pockys
Great store, a lot of variety and very reasonably priced compared to others. With the wide variety of seafood and meat, they keep their prices lower than other companies which keeps me returning and wanting to support their company. There is a large variety of fruit another produce and the store has many offerings. I find the staff very welcoming and friendly here every time at checkout and they always offer a smile. It has been my experience throughout life, many Asian restaurants and grocery stores tend to be very unfriendly or cold in their customer service department and do not extend a smile or much of a greeting, this company has always trained their employees to go above and beyond with a welcome, ask questions and make small talk to welcome all customers and ask if they need anything without being pestering. They simply have a great balance. The market is clean, the meat and produce area are clean and fresh and the fragrance in the air is not stale fish and seafood like it is in so many Asian markets within Portland and abroad. It is relatively low odor and well-kept. If you havent been to this Market do yourself a favor and go today. Take time to explore all of their different offerings and even stop by their Deli, they have great food there!*******UPDATE 6/26/2020******I have returned several times over the past few months and service is about the same. Pricing stays about the same which is positive.
What a great market with a good selection of items. Try it out!
Geat meat, seafood and produce sections!
Huge store with lots of options. Friendly staff
Great prices and great selection. The staff here also knows where most of the items are or have an idea of the general direction or area. This is most helpful I have been to the new store that opened recently and if you ask for something so far 95% of the time they have no idea where it would be and lots of times they dont even know what you want. Here its the opposite they can help you with almost any inquiry you have and help you find the right items. They care a wide selection of ingredients so you should be able to take care of your shopping list.
Limited selection of Asian foods but its the best in the area
Has all I need to brew bone broth and prices better than anywhere else I checked
Good deli. Decent prices. Not crowded on weekdays.
One of my favorites stores to find fresh fish..
It was a fun experience! I hadnt been here before! Saw fruit Id never previously seen and bought a few things.
Yumm fish flavor candy heahaehaa
Good variety of products.
Find all your Asian Food there also the have hot foods
I was impressed and satisfied with the price, quality and variety of products. The service is quick and to the point. Ive never been disappointed with any of my visits.
