We are visiting Boston and the folks at the hotel recommended South Street Diner. Small cute diner. Really small. If you are a large person height and/or width sit at the counter...the booths are tight. We are between 5 8 and 62 our legs were screaming for room. We were able to get a seat upon entry. Pretty good menu selections. The food was okay. We had to return my daughters food because the home fries were cold. Service was great. The waitress answered all if our questions and when we had to change out my daughters food it was accomplished without hassle. My son had chocolate chip pancakes. I liked them...his food was good. I just had a burger...no complaints. When the second batch of home fries and short stack came out for my daughter...the food was a lot better. Thank you.
It was crowded but it is supposed to be that way, the waiters were nice and helpful (tip them as much as you can please) I ordered a breakfast plate it was good but I wish they had few more options to choose instead of bacon, sausage. Something with %100 beef would be wonderful. Other than that my friends burgers were rare cooked so don’t forget to tell to the waiter you want it medium or well done cooked if you don’t want your burger patty bloody. Always nice to be in the South Street! Thanks bunch !
Never can get disappointed with this 24 hour stamp of what a Boston Diner should be like. Barely a wait time, friendly staff and always great tunes playing. You can sit outside or in, options yours. The dishes taste exactly the way youd expect. Need to alter your menu choice? SURE! Theyll take care of it! Whether food, drink or all of the above, South Street Diner always aims to please. Look forward to paying multiple visits because one visit is never enough*
South Street Diner was a great experience. An actual diner not far from Chinatown. Our waitress was great. As far as the food - all was good other than the bagel - it was tough as a brick. Highly recommend you either dine here early or late when the crowds arent out - its very small! Overall a positive experience.
Good egg omelet loaded with ham, bacon and sausage. Not greasy, not sitting heavy, and fairly priced. Put a fresh pot of decaf on for me, and my server seemed to honestly do her best to fulfill my wants. I really appreciate that. I couldnt believe how fast my food came out; literally got my food before the fresh pot of coffee was done brewing
Surprisingly few options for breakfast around here that isnt named Dunkin. This place may not look like much from the outside, but its very good. The crab cake Benedict was really one-of-a-kind. Home fries were also well above average. Fast service. Apparently famous. And very retro. Totally dont mind that its a bit cramped in there. This place is worth keeping in mind for whoever is in the area and looking for something with a bit more substance.
Great experience. Easy to order online, ready quickly, and no mistakes. The food was wonderfully prepared and portions generous. Very friendly staff.
Love this 24 hour spot! Always busy.. always worth the wait
This place was pretty cool, food was very good and waitress was excellent. 24/7 and kind of quirky, which I like.
Food here was fantastic! My wife and I were glad to have come across this place. We always enjoy going to local diners when we visit places and this one was no exception. The service was great and we were even fortunate enough to have no wait getting in. The Boston Cream Pancakes are a must try. My wife got the French toast sandwich and am she was very happy with that as well.
This was such a wonderful atmosphere and diner. Our waitress was absolutely amazing and so helpful. She treated us like we were her best friends. The food was amazing and my husband enjoyed the best tuna melt he never had. We will definitely go again when we’re in the area and we highly suggest it!!!
I found this place wandering one day waiting for the greyhound at south station. 24 hour local diner you can’t go wrong. I always get the diner special and it’s great. They use scali bread for their toast and it makes me so happy. They’re portions are large as well. Staff is super nice and there is rarely a large wait when I’ve gone. Highly recommend.
The only downfall was that my table hadnt been wiped down, and there was only one other patron in the establishment (slow time and not clean). The good parts were 1) A jukebox 2) My server was friendly and super attentive 3) The food was delicious and the portions were large. Im looking forward to going back with friends.
Classic diner with some very good seasonal options. Great any time of day ir night.
Food is great! The staff is so friendly and on their game! Never had a single issue. Would 100% recommend this Diner, but be sure to try the sausage eggs Benedict 🙂
The food was surprisingly really good. I was visiting from New York and decided to stop here because it was the only thing open hate in the area. And to my surprise I really enjoyed the food.
A classic spot but darn tight to sit down in. Food was serviceable but nothing special. I hear its great for late night spot but breakfast was just ok.
Love a good diner for Breakfast, and they did just that! Friendly and fast service. Food was great, Thanks
An American classic and a Boston treasure. The owner greeted us himself and made us feel so welcome. The staff are cheerful and efficient. Watching the beautiful ballet of the line cooks while they juggled take out and eat in orders made me happy to be back in restaurants! We had the lobster and crab Benedicts, both sublime. The house fries are the best Ive ever had. Great coffee topped off the experience. Not to be missed when visiting Boston.
The only place in Boston that was really open for late night food! Decent choice, but the home fries weren’t great, and it’s a very tight squeeze!
Place was really great at 1230 AM on a Tuesday/Wednesday night/morning. Only place open that hour on a Tuesday night in Boston. Even though other places stated they were open until midnight or two AM. (We started looking at 1030 PM) staff here was awesome! Personality plus staff!!!
No reason to give this place anything other than 5 star. Best food I’ve had in a long time to be real.
Ive been told its a pretty iconic establishment but I think its experienced substantial price inflation that has way out paced the quality of the food. That just did not feel like a $10 breakfast to me. The biggest flop was the potatoes I think, and Ill forgive a lot for a passable potato. And if you want fruit instead its a $4 (!) up charge. 🤷♂️It might be better with a pair of beer goggles... But I doubt I will bother going back despite being around the corner from our apartment.
Fun place to be, amazing food!! I met a nice hostess there, Shannon. she was very kind & helped my family to our table! Very attentive & polite. Thanks again south st. Diner! Well be back again when in Boston!
This breakfast at South St Diner was an excellent farewell to Boston. Our server was extremely polite and friendly. The lobster Benedict was delicious!
The eggs benedict was so good. I enjoyed my late night Welcome to Boston meal. The real winner was the grilled cinnamon roll though. If you try anything from South Street, try the grilled roll. Its so good!
I would give this place 4 stars but the several attempts I tried to call this place trying to tell them if an issue was not preventable. For the most part food was good as well as service. Unfortunately for me I ordered an omelette with American cheese bacon spinach and tomatoes. Unfortunately for me the tomatoes were rotten; totally sour. I ordered to go and live in Allston. When I began to eat the omelette I noticed that the tomatoes were rotten and was already home. I tried to call the restaurant to inform them of this but was directed straight to voicemail hence why Im leaving this review. I hope moving forward they wont serve rotten food to paying customers.
South Street Diner was formerly Blue Diner and it was built in 1943 by the Worcester Dining Company to serve local factory workers. What an awesome place easy going, no nonsense diner.Amazing service and lovely staff.Nice menu, good coffee, free refills and quick food delivery. We got to sit in a booth! So much history and a really unique diner! Loved it!
Owner and staff are very friendly and knowledgeable about their menu. Service was fast and over the top of excellence. Food was amazing and cant wait to go back.
Now I had a great experience here. But the food just isnt the best. Heres why this place is good. its the only 24/7 diner style restaurant in Boston. OTHERWISE everything I can say about this place can be described as Mediocre. The pancakes were pretty good tho. I will say the jukebox added to the fun also.
Went in with 2 other people at around 10pm, and had the food within 15 minutes of ordering. The portion sizes were huge, and it tasted great. Price was very nice too, at $45 for 3 people.
Great old fashion dinner. Servers are really good
Perfect for a quick meal. Food was good. Server was super nice.
Horrible, greasy. Terrible. The other reviews were good. I was shocked. It was too early in the morning and no other places were open, so I stayed. However I would never, ever go there again. If I could give it less than one star I would.
Expecting me to eat the whole plate of Boston Creme pancakes in one sitting is about as reasonably as asking me to down a half dozen of the donuts at once. Needless to say I was very well fed for a few days’ breakfasts, even after carrying the leftovers in my backpack for 5 miles on foot. On a hot day. Prices aren’t a bargain but I’m not sure what I should be expecting from Boston.
Very disheartening that I came here to pick up my order and was interrogated by the man at the door. He demanded I hand him my phone in the middle of a pandemic to prove I’m not trying to steal food. Then he proceeds to ask the order of another guest without asking him to see his phone or any other questions. I guess if I don’t want to be haggled or have it insinuated that I’m stealing then I should probably bleach my skin. This was an order I was picking up for myself not an ubereats delivery order which is a completely different protocol. Getting interrogated about food at a late night night place like this makes me feel like they think I’m homeless or something… definitely felt embarrassed.
We waited over two hours to be seated. While everyone that arrived after us was seated. We addressed the matter to the gentlemen at the door. He said that we was next inline only to continue allowing new arrivals in. I have yet to have a meal that’s worth waiting that long for, I highly doubt that it would have been from here. So we left. Staff was rude and ignorant. I have never reviewed a business before. But I had to go out of my way to create a profile just to share my experience with this atrocious establishment. There definitely needs to be an option for less than a star.
This place is a literal institution—it’s a 24-hour haven where people gather after a long bout of traveling. I’ve spent many a night here eating burgers and late night eggs benedict, people watching, and playing songs on the table jukebox. May the South Street live on for many, many years to come!
The menu was great, and the vibes were immaculate. Nice quick service and good music. Will return.
Terrible service :( the employees were definitely all high or drunk. The first time I went I had the impossible burger. Very subpar definitely would not order again. Decided to try some dessert early this morning (4am) and got FOOD POISONING from the food. I had strawberry cheesecake pancakes and apple pie. Didn’t even eat the pancakes but I did eat the cheesecake and two bites of the freezer burned apple pie. DO NOT EAT HERE :(
Horrible. Was told we could grab a seat outside and then were ignored for 15 minutes until we gave up and left. Oddly, the outdoor waitress cheerily bid us goodbye as we left. It was the only time she acknowledged our presence.
Thought the bouncer was some random dude about to kill me so he definitely did his job. Good food. Good prices.
Good prices, classic atmosphere, location right near the bus and train
This place was great! We were able to get a table right away both times we visited. The staff was very pleasant and service was quick and accurate. Food was great! We will definitely re-visit this diner if we ever get back to Boston!
Breakfast food was very average & I felt sick after the crab benedict. Nothing is that tasty but the ambiance was great.
This restaurant was recommended, after entering we decided to leave.
Just what you would expect from an greasy spoon diner that has continued to occupy its tiny slice of urban real estate while the modern city has sprung up around it. Sadly though despite its obvious age and popularity I couldnt detect much of a charm, nor was the food really that special.
Food was amazing, like better than I thought it would be. Had a great time
We are visiting Boston for the first time, landed at midnight during a rain storm with no plans whatsoever. Looked for food near Logan that was still open and found South Street Diner. We got there and there was a wait, but we were told we could wait under the awning. We ended up waiting around 30-40 minutes to get in. Food took a while as well, but was absolutely worth every minute of the wait! We ended up being stranded there for a few hours, not being able to get an Uber/Lyft with the storm. The staff was absolutely amazing, tried to get us a cab, and eventually, we walked with the guy at the door back to South Station and got a crash course on the MBTA. This restaurant and the staff absolutely saved our night. Well definitely be back!
DELICIOUS! WORTH THE TRIP FROM CT.
One of the best place you can go wrong with the food is good and you get what you pay for
The most authentic diner Ive ever been to...because its been doing that diner thing for 60+ years, 24/7. Go!
Did you just get off a late bus at South Station and are starving? Have you been boozin all day in Chinatown and need an after hours last stop? Is it the middle of the night and you need some food, or the middle of the day and you need a bloody Mary? Do you just love Boston institutions and/or all night diners? Boy do I have the place for you.
Always love this place the really try hard to keep it Covid safe and accommodate the guest, another culinary professional and myself sat down to eat tonight. The wait start was as friendly and attentive as any busy lunch server would be and lets be honest it was after 2am wow. And while sitting at the bar surrounded by Plexi in our booth for two we couldnt help but to notice how cohesively the kitchen staff worked with very minimal conversation in such a small space. And lets not for get where the party started, in line with the crowd management staff that made us feel safe and entertained. Always and forever will be my first choice for late night eats and I think I may have shined a light on a great hidden jem for what hope is a former IHOP eater.
DISGUSTING SCAMM AVOID THIS PLACEOrdered lobster eggs benedict. Came with barely no lobster and it was chewy. When paying the bill, Michelle (supposedly the manager) gave the check and saw that the price was 30% more than posted on the menu when asked why, she pointed to a sign next to the register saying that some items on the menu have a different price. When asked why this was not informed at ordering the answer was. ITS POSTED AT THE REGISTER.. with an attitude she refused to do anything for the inconveniences We payed and left. Bad experience overall
Food was unbelievably amazing!! Large portions. Prices are good. Staff is very friendly & polite. Its a cozy place. Old school train car diner is best way to describe it. Will definitely go back next time Im in Boston!!
Food was great but only has there tables inside. Very small restaurant. Get take out instead.
Amazing... Really really amazing. I have the Heuos Rancho and walked away completely stuffed. My partner tried the banana stuffed pancakes and said they were amazing.
The food was amazing. I got a omelet stuffed with corned beef and hash was absolutely delicious. My gf got crab cake Benedict. She loved it great flavor, it was rich and taste fresh. The portions were perfect. Wanted to go back before we left but seemed to be a line out the door. But we highly recommend it of you are in Boston for a visit.
Food was well made just a little on the bland side.
Ordered on Uber eats, chicken fingers and fries. The second I pressed confirm order I called south street diner to notify the place with an allergy.(uber app did not let me put in allergy) The girl on the phone - Friday the 20th around 8 pm, Apparently from the 15 seconds of confirming order, the food was already made??? She gave me an attitude and did not confirm if there was any allergies. LIFE THREATENING ALLERGY. She took a guess and when I asked to speak to a manger she said no...... THIS IS SOMEONES LIFE. She needs to be educated on top allergens and how cross contamination works. She also needs to work on her customer service.RUDE.Food was soggy as well.
Went here after reading all these wonderful reviews. And we were rather disappointed I just say. Our food (waffle and French toast) came cold when asked waitress to please warm up the food as it was cold we got the back and forth from the waitress. The she told the cook which was rude to waitress and they proceeded to argue. Waffle tasted sub par, as did the French toast. Would definitely not recommend. We had breakfast yesterday called Mild Weed which was delicious.
Literally a horrible experience! First person i spoke to was engaging and informed me of different options, but then informed me i had been on the phone with for a while that i should just call back after i made a decision. I agreed and called back in 5 mins and a different person, extremely rude, needless to say! Informed me...such options were not existent and i should call back once i knew what i wanted!!!!!Called a 3rd time! The same person who answered the call the second time blatantly refused to understand my order and so i just hung up!Extremely disappointed in such service in supposedly........the best breakfast place in town!!!!!!!!!Clearly not!!!!!!!!!!!! Cant imagine the service i would have gotten in person....if this is what i got over a mere pick up order!
Great breakfast options if you tend to wake up at 2am and want a quick fix.
New management still trying to figure things out post covid. Boston area staple and a must go but ATM things are rough. Food quality has gone, service was non-existent. Lets hope they get this back to what it used to be.
Last September was our first time in the States so this was also our first visit to an authentic American diner and we have to say it was awesome. Constant coffee top ups from our marvelous waitress. She was class. Were not that used to coffee top ups here in Ireland. Food was unreal especially the battered pickles. So good. If were ever back in Boston well be going straight back here.
Perfect, only place open in Boston in the middle of the night
