Great supermarket in Manhattan. Adam the manager is always so responsive and the cashiers are always helpful and nice they always help me to bag! They always keep the lines moving really quickly. I shop their sales every week. So much better than the crowd at Fairway
I love this little supermarket. Jam-packed full of products. Air conditioning is always on high, I love the chill in summer. Its never very crowded. Im sad about that. I want to make sure they stay in business. So few supermarkets around the city.
Pioneer is steadfast. Always there everyday ready when you are. Dedicated staff at every level. Not one day of closing down except for Thanksgiving or?Thru all the difficult times lately these guys keep chugging on. I made friends with most people working there and they stay cordial and eager to do the necessary. For what they are and what they do, Five stars is the least I can do for them.
This Pioneer store has upgraded all parts of the store. It carries the best of everything and hard to find items. The staff is very friendly and helpful.
Customers are willing to pay for groceries are accustomed with this store. You may easily place orders for groceries and have them delivered the next day. There are several great options online, ranging from fresh foodstuffs to ready-to-eat items. If you enjoy driving your auto, the parking area is clean and big enough to accommodate it. Thats incredible!
Love having Pioneer in the neighborhood all these (50!) years. Through blackouts, hurricanes and now a pandemic Pioneer Market has never disappointed. The cashiers are friendly and manager very attentive. This is not a glitzy grocery store but is a much appreciated neighborhood locale.
Not crowded. Clean and decent selection of items. More organic produce/fruit would be great. Recommended.
The location of this store is fantastic and prices are appropriate for the UWS area. However, you don’t get what you pay for as customer service is nonexistent, cashiers are rude and passive aggressive, the selection of items is inconsistent (no Dave’s Bread?), and today I was charged an extra $12 dollars for delivery when I bagged my own groceries. Did I mention the cashiers never bag groceries? If I hadn’t caught the charge and corrected the cashier, my fiancé and I would’ve paid an extra $12 for no reason.
Im a huge Pioneer fan. We moved into Manhattan from the suburbs recently and I was wondering where I would do all my grocery shopping. I tried Pioneer on Columbus and 74th and now Im hooked. Their selection and range of products is amazing. They always seem to have exactly what I need and the store is very clean. The meat and fish are first rate and always super fresh. Its well managed and the cashiers are nice. Its a great place to shop.
Love this Super Market ! We still need this type of super market along with other fancy ones
Pioneer is not bad its been around the neighborhood forever. The supermarket is not in a huge space but its one of the best and only options we have on the Upper West Side for groceries.
Bought a huge bottle of kombucha and realized it was 3 months expired when I got home :( check the expiration date before you buy groceries from hereUpdate: I went back to get a new bottle of kombucha and all the bottles in the flavor I bought were a range of 1-3 months expired
Small supermarket with slim aisles and the line to the counter always ends up encroaching on the shopping aisles. If its busy, its impossible to social distance. Fortunately there are lots of times throughout the day when its at least a little less busy. The selection is varied; some things (like vegan ice cream--awesome!) they have a good selection of, while others less so (the produce section could be bigger, for example). The attendants tend to be nice or politely apathetic, which is fine by me. I would give it five stars if it had more selection and wider aisles but its just weirdly set up and kind of hard to move through. People who go there all the time probably have it fully memorized, which Im sure makes it easier.
Pioneer has groceries the other chain supermarkets (Gristedes, Key Food, etc.) dont. They are well known for a huge selection of beers, they also offer excellent imported Italian delicacies at great prices. They have *every* type of flour there is. Theres a good selection of meats. The fresh produce department is pretty basic. Prices seem to be lower than the chain supermarkets.
Wonderful neighborhood grocery store, well stocked with variety, specialize in many beer varieties, good produce, etc.
An amazing store operated and staffed by the most remarkable group of people. We loved the place from the time we first moved to the neighborhood a few years ago but the effort the managers made to stay open and safe during the pandemic cemented the relationship for eternity. The managers work hard to keep up with the neighborhoods ever changing population and its tastes. The prices are fair. They cant be as low on every single item as Amazon or Trader Joes. Remember it is an independent business, not a national or international corporation. Nonetheless: Before and during Passover I noticed the OPPOSITE of price gouging: several essential ingredients, including walnuts and Concord grape juice, were on sale. The men working in the produce section regularly tap me on the shoulder to point me to a more perfect pineapple or bunch of bananas than the pineapple or bananas Ive chosen. The women who work the registers are among the most intelligent, the friendliest, and the most good humored -- you can see their smiles right through their masks -- New Yorkers you will ever meet. Pioneer Market Forever.
I went to the supermarket on Monday to buy some ingredients. What I like about this supermarket is that its selection is excellent, as is the product quality! They never fail with their products and service to impress me! I highly recommend all of my relatives to this supermarket! Last time I went inside, since their supermarket is pretty big, I got confused about where to start.
I have shopped here for decades, and i always appreciated it and it has improved constantly over the years and I find myself shopping there more and more recently, and considering that the original and best Fairway is 2 blocks away and a large Trader Joes is 4 blocks away that this small family owned market is holding its own and competing successfully with those 2 giants and growing and improving all the time is quite an accomplishment. Besides for the quality of the products and the good prices the quality of the employees from top to bottom makes shopping there a special pleasure - it is a well run, unique little gem of a supermarket and i would recommend it most highly. If you search it out you may be surprised at the depth and breadth of its variety - from top notch kimchi to gefilte fish to the very best variety of exotic beers.
I went to the store on Monday to buy some ingredients. What I like about this supermarket is that its choice, as well as the food quality, is great! With their products and their encouragement, they never fail to impress me! I highly recommend all of my relatives to this shop! I got confused about where to begin last time I went inside, because their supermarket is pretty big.
Good place. some stuff a little pricy but great prices on others. very limited if any energy drink options so would love to see improvement there. Especially full throttle energy would be nice to see but really just anything
I have lived half a block from Pioneer for almost 50 years. It used to be the most wonderful neighborhood store. But a few years ago when the long-time managers retired, it morphed into a wannabe Fairway with lower quality food and higher prices. I hardly shop there at all now. What s shame.
Convenience is just around the corner👌🏻👍🏻😉😷
Cheap-looking, but expensive grocery store. With a trader joes and a fairway nearby, theres not much reason to go to this place.
THE BEST Supermarket in NYC...the management and staff are superb, all wonderful people, and the selection of quality food & drinks are vast!!! (5 Stars *****)
The shop was very clean and well organize in each aisle. And also you can freely roam around with each corner. The quality of the product has a high quality especially with their meat it is served fresh. A highly recommended grocery shop!
The prices are very nice and the specials are unbelievable. The staff is extremely friendly and knowledgeable of all products in the store.
Great neighborhood supermarket. Its been on Columbus Avenue for decades.Very nice people...has been well stocked throughout the pandemic.
They have Tusker. I was happy
Well stocked but much more expensive than previously.
Its a little pricey but its got a great selection of food and a great selection of beer worths the time
Never crowded! Good selection. Produce has really improved the past few years
YOUR LINKS FROM YOUR WEEKLY EMAILS RARELY OPEN TO SHOW THE SPECIALS OF THE WEEK
Well run store. Has a pretty good selection. They can be pricey on some items, especially ice cresm. They have a world class beer selection. They even ship beer all over the country.
A violent female cashier refused a bag while she yelled with a Loud and threatening voice I don’t need one, it was so bad I asked if she ever used physical violence on people and she immediately and heavily seriously confirmed. I left quick mentioning this to the first classier. I know from my purchases long ago it’s generally managed badly by loud laughing managers that just seriously make a mess. I will not return obviously 😬 One could say if I don’t agree I don’t belong but I feel maybe they don’t. This is not the Bronx or a Jail .. this is the Upper West Side, amd quite frankly we just all died during Covid!
Friendly staff and great selection

Pioneer is my go-to for MEAT. Their prices are the best by far in this neighborhood. Im not too fond of the check out ladies...usually no greeting and no thank you or have a good day. Not good policy.
Grateful for this store being in our neighborhood - no ridiculous queues like at Fairway or TJ’s, helpful staff and a great selection of brands across all price points. Would love to see some more organic meat options.
Owning a business in NYC is no easy task. We have to be grateful for local businesses like Pioneer that manage to survive in an Amazon world and in a city where retail rent prices are insane. Once you get to know the cashiers you will realize they are very kind and very friendly. New York is a tough crowd. Unless you are outwardly kind and friendly don’t expect them to be all warm and fuzzy on your first visit. *** please get Kite brand almond milk yogurt
Wide variety, clean but expensive $$$$,
Fairway and Trader Joes have lines around the building but the selection here is amazing and much quicker to check out. Will be shopping here much more often.
Dear Columbus Avenue Pioneer Supermarket—Thank you so much for staying open, staying stocked, and the good humor and uplifting spirits of your employees during this crisis. We’ve been shopping at your store since we moved into our apartment on West 73rd since 1979, and you’ve taken great care of us. Especially now.Thank you! Marcia and Tony Dodge
Excellent selection of beer and good overall produce as well as heavily needed items.
Nice local supermarket. Good to grab some a few items
The only store i can request an item not on stock and they will add it to their inventory! Or atleast try their best. Nice to shop in a place where they care for their customers needs. Many nice updates this past year! Pioneer is looking good!!
The only thing I observed whilst shopping at pioneer is you cant find a Worker in store to help you take far out of reach items ..on top shelves or asked a question ¿¿¿!!!agrees with not super friendly cashiers..neither courteous..more training customers friendly staff @@@@@smile a day brings more shoppers
Great neighborhood grocery...But everyone in the store should wear a mask...NY STATE LAW STARTING TODAY3 day notice to allow complianceYou must wear a mask or cloth covering when you are others...You do not have the right to infectme/us...
Easy to shop wide variety
Amazing beer section, good price
Nice prices, friendly staff
Tough prices, good to have as a backup
Its super clean and the employees are always genuine and nice. Thanks guys!!
Overpriced for run of the mill groceries. If youre desperate and dont have time to go to Trader Joes, Wholefoods, or Fairway, its great for grabbing something quick. Otherwise, it is a waste to shop here. You can have organic and gourmet food for the prices they charge for cheap, processed canned food. The staff are quiet and dont seem happy to see customers in the store. It makes me wonder how their boss is treating them?
I love this supermarket! They always have our staples, but also interesting German beers. And Borax. It is like an old-fashioned grocery store, and a modern market all in one.
Good prices so fare. international products. My store for many years.
Its a neighborhood supermarket super convenient and all cashiers are very nice
A gem of a store and great people who work there. Thank you all for your hard work.
Convenient and getting more upscale selection. Prices are high although lines are few. More a place for pantry items than fresh produce
Hit or Miss here. For some reason there fresh foods are not very fresh. Market has too much competition with other major chains
Upper west side location is wildly overpriced - if youre in the area, save the money and just walk to Fairway. Just 3lb of tomatoes cost $14 at pioneer, same amount is $8~ at basically any other store. Same goes for everything else they sell - easily 10-25% more expensive than other grocery stores in the area for no reason at all
They do a good job with their space. They sell pretty much everything. It doesnt feel big and clean but when you need something for dinner this night - or when you just don’t want to wait in line - it makes all the sense in the world to come here. Its never crowded
Not much for meat selection but everything else is great.
Such a great service. Super easy to order online and fast and easy delivery. Everything came and was super fresh and yummy. Also they have the best pita bread chips and hummus I have ever tasted. I will keep ordering to just get those products. Sooooooo yummy!
A gem of a store and great people who work there. Thank you all for your hard work.
Support local businesses! Its also less crazy here than trader Joes. They have a good selection of everything at lower prices. Plus, their premade salads are pretty good.
The best shopping experience. The staff are very friendly and professional. The selection is excellent and fair prices.
This place will be out of business soon. While I love to support local stores, this one changes exorbitant prices for the most basic of items AND has the most unfriendly, rude, customer-hating staff on the planet. Only once have I ever had a cashier acknowledge me or say Thank You. That combination is a killer when nearby Trader Joes on 72nd St has the best prices, huge selection and the MOST friendly staff in New York. Pioneer is a supermarket I wouldnt feel bad to see go under. If you hate your customers, they wont come back!
Has everything you need
Love this place. If you need it they got it and the help is great all the time
Love the Grocery store because the prices aren’t insane but damn I’ve never seen worse cashiers. They ignore you, point you to a different register if they don’t wanna ring you up and talk to each other the whole time. Today I bought literally 5 small items and the lady wouldn’t even bag it.. she put 2 items in and then just left the bag sitting there and started doing something else. I used to work in a grocery store as a cashier too.. it’s really not that hard to fake smile and do your job
The cashiers are so honest and friendly.prices are okay
Very clean and neat and organized. No long lines either. Very nice.
I like this supermarket. Great beer aisle, nice cashiers, and very good meat department with good specials.
Great neighborhood grocer, fair prices for the most part (there is an odd selection of expensive gourmet type food) but the staples are well priced and the selection is comprehensive. The staff is always friendly.Glad Pioneer is in the neighborhood!
Many items, good prices, short lines. Staff friendly and helpful. The best supermarket in the area!
Amazing location. The staff is super friendly and very helpful have to visit of your in the area
I went in here on a whim, because this place looks so cool-- like its straight out of the 1970s. I was impressed to find that theyve actually got a lot of great stuff, including one of the more impressive beer selections in the neighborhood. I found some varieties I have not seen many other places in New York, and lots more bottles Id never seen before. Its such a trip to visit this old fashioned grocery store, but I was happy to discover that they often have what I need at reasonable prices.
It is a blessing to have this store even somewhat close to me on the UWS. Everything you want not available at Whole Foods or TJs, i. e., Supermarket brands. Prices arent bad either. Also hardly ever any lines!
This store is pretty decent. I wish it had a self checkout. The cashiers put a damper on things. They act like you don’t exist as they ring you up. They just talk to each other and ignore you. Everyone has bad days and customer service isn’t exactly enjoyable...but damn. It’s like Groundhog Day. (There are 2 nice ones though).
Hit or miss. Meat is always a miss. But at times nice vegetables. Good mix of shelved items. Ranging from excellent to over priced. Good sales. Good beer selection.
This Pioneer has gotten MUCH nicer over the past year. New fixtures, a much better product selection, even the staff seem friendlier. Its getting to be a really nice little local supermarket.
Just great for the neighborhood
Don’t EVER BUY MILK from here. Milk always go bad days before the sell by date. Bought milk several times from here and it only lasts a couple of days!!! Such a waste of money.
Great local store that has just about everything you need, including specialty. Its pricier but that should be expected from a non-chain locale.
Great local supermarket in an area that is rapidly gentrifying. Easy in and out. The closest next options are fairway or Trader Joe’s both of which are incredibly stressful to navigate.
Expensive but good selection and friendly staff.
Good
This place has been a neighborhood staple for cheaper prices for longer than the 40 years Ive lived here. Its a small, old neighborhood mom and pop market. Has some good bargains and pleasant staff.
Real old school supermarket, The large selection of products Was pleasantly surprising..
(1of my) Go to stores for Bubble solution. Terrific meat selection, beers, & produce + has all the basics. Fast check out lines.
Nice and clean. A neighborhood fixture for over 40 years. Oh and the best beer selections from around the world
What a gem@!!@ So hard to find a market in this part of NYC...as a monthly visitor, I had dispaired of finding a place to a make grocery store run without visiting 3 or 4 shops. Here is a place with all that is needed!
Great prices and good imported goods
This place looks like its from the dark ages. The windows are an eyesore to the neighborhood. It would be great to have a pleasant grocery store to go to in this area. Please update this store. It desperately needs a facelift.
The manager is an angel, but the staff is really scary. They stare in a menacing way and castigate the customers. I’m glad that I don’t have to go here often. It has a good selection of non-alcoholic beers, which I had to purchase for a sober friend.
A great place to shop locally if youre on the upper West Side.
Supermarkets and stores come and go on UWS. But after all those years, Pioneer is the only one still standing. Thank you, Lenny!
The best beer selection in UWS. Find anything from standard German to Rare Belgium magnums. An entire isle. Can by singly, awesome. The food products themselves are fair to good price for the neighborhood. Produce is ok.
The prices in this store are very high priced.
