This is the greatest gourmet market in Manhattan. I walk two miles from 84th and Columbus to buy our groceries. Incredible organic produce, at reasonable prices. The greatest prepared food section-rotisserie chicken, meatloaf, pot roast, succulent side orders, flat bread pizzas, and seafood. The butcher shop, deli, and fish counter are second to none. I’ve never seen such red beautiful grass fed and prime beef in my life. This places blows away Citarella and Fairway. And the staff is very pleasant also.
We are happy to have you around: all the products are great but fish and meat are of supreme quality. We support establishments that are there when we need then the most. My wife travels far just for Agatha.
Its a little more expensive than your average supermarket/grocery store, but the food is guaranteed to always be fresh and delicious. My personal favorite is the custom made sandwiches that you can get from the butcher section. You pick up your fresh choice of bread in the front, and then bring it over to the butcher section and they will put whatever you ask on it. I have also never gotten sick from any of their fish, meat, salads, prepared foods, etc. The place would be five stars but it just gets so darn hectic in there and sometimes the staff members really are not that friendly. I recommend doing your shopping their early morning when they first open, early afternoon, or late at night near closing time.
I have to believe this is some kind of fluke, because this store seems very nice and well stocked. I got a cupcake from the bakery, a very basic vanilla cupcake with sprinkles. I took it home and let it warm up for about an hour. When I took a taste of the frosting I can only describe the flavor as bad cheese. You know the taste of cheese that has been in your fridge for a month longer than it should have and almost tastes like a bleu cheese when it was a cheddar? That was the taste. I just flipped the cupcake upside-down and dumped all the frosting off, only to discover the cake itself had the flavor and texture of a sponge. This cupcake was not the last, sad remnant of the section either, the cupcake section was fully stocked, and I have to believe theyre all compromised. Check those cupcakes, store manager!
Over the last few days I have purchased delicious gelato as well as various desserts, lattes and fresh cut fruit. Everything we purchased was outstanding. I also bought what might have been the best chocolate babka I’ve ever tasted. The staff was helpful and one of their cashiers, Kristien, went out of her way to make me feel like a valued customer!
Super nice market. The pastas are amazing!! The deserts are delicious. The apples were not very good, but ok. I wish the baguettes were not so hard and dark baked. Its not inexpensive, but its worth it. Love it.
Had an incredible experience here. My husband and I grab our breakfast here. The store is also a foodies dream - fresh breads, chocolate, coffee, all kinds of preserves, honey. At Agata & Valentina, you will experience the aromas and flavors of Italy while shopping at one of the best specialty food markets in New York City. We pride ourselves on providing the highest quality fine foods and impeccable service, while offering some of the most competitive pricing in town.
One of my favorite places to shop for food when I lived there. Great square pizza and other hot foods to take home. Also nice fish and butcher shop. You can’t miss the bakery on the way to the checkout - buy the cheesecake.
Great store for anything Italian and fresh meats and fish, cheeses, pasta, cooked mains and side dishes, salads, fresh vegetables, pastries, breads, olives, oils, just about anything you could want in fresh foods. They also have a counter for espresso, cappuccinos, etc. Long checkout line at times but it moves fast as they have several cashiers. One of my favorite food shopping places on the upper east side and I believe they have a branch in lower Manhattan as well.
A great gourmet grocery. Space is limited so the aisles can get a little tight and shopping can be bit tricky until you get used to the layout. The only place in the area that offers such variety of gourmet specialties!
There was a decent amount of organic, though the signs on the outside of the building led me to expect more. There was also a large conventional presence which seemed contrary to the same expectation. There was no greeting or offer of service. Also, there were expired products on the shelf. It just wasnt good.
Stay away from their baked goods. It tastes like they forgot to put the oil in every recipe. Very dry and not tasty at all. $7.50 for the worst angel food cake that I have ever had. It tasted like a stale loaf of Wonder-Bread. $7.99 for a box of old and dry cookies that looked delicious until they crumbled dryly in my mouth. At the prices they charge, bring a big wallet and prepare to be underwhelmed. My 3 stars are for their broad selection of items and decent prepared food options.
Good Yorkville grocery store.
I dont understand nyc, somehow I can buy things like eggs, cheese, bread and some deli items at this bougie Italian grocery for cheaper and way better quality than nearby normal grocery stores. Also their house brand of Gelato slaps
Local grocery store with a great seafood section and good butcher. Good variety of prepared food too. Bakery is fresh as well. Friendly staff
Think Whole Foods in the early 1950’s. This place is pricey (took a star off for that), but everything is quite good. The food is all freshly made and high quality. There is a section dedicated just to cheese (many made on site), a meat carving station for Italian subs, a sushi chef (try the poke bowl), and hot food section with things like spanakopita, Whole chicken and pizza. The dessert section is amazing. Honestly, everything is fantastic-but it’s easy to leave spending a lot. Must try for anyone in the area!
This shop sells a huge variety of prepared foods, fresh meats, chicken, fish, seafood, and cheeses, plus excellent produce, including greens, vegetables, fruits; gourmet pizzas and sandwiches, and cakes, cookies, pies, etc.
The usual great produce and meat, etc. The standout last night was a young man in the produce section who saw me struggling with my purchases and rushed a cart to me. I havent enjoyed Cust.Serv like this in a long time.So bottom line great Customer Service
Great prepared food sections for a quick meal to go on the way home. I prefer half chicken, some veggie options and rice or sweet potato is my go to. The lines can be long during peak hours so if you like the store get to know your fave sections and make a one way route around the store for a quick shopping experience. For even quicker service, there is a register tucked away in the very front of the store for hot and prepared foods. No buffet, do it yourself options, but staff can help out together for you, sometimes it can be quite a wait. Can have a decent meal for a decent price in the city! Something unique about this store is they have some stunning cut stems and bunches of flowers and floral arrangements available, also well priced. There are two locations in the city I’m aware of.
I love this place, they have very good cooked good, pastry and vegetables.
MAKE SURE YOU CREDIT JANET ROMAN FOR HER CHRISTMAS MENU ORDER #37367 SHE WILL PICK UP ON FRIDAY DEC.25 . THE CUSTOMERS HUSBAND HAD TO TRAVEL ALL THE WAY TO YOUR UPPER EAST SIDE STORE AND TALK TO YOUR MANAGER TO CHANGE THE ORDER FROM 10LBS TO 7LBS for the items BECAUSE NO ONE ANSWERS THE PHONE OR CALLS BACK! THE ITEMS STAY THE SAME- ONLY THE WEIGHT WAS TO BE CHANGED!!! A VERY SIMPLE REQUEST!!! SORRY BUT YOUR PERSONNEL ISNT THAT GREAT AND REGARDLESS OF A HOLIDAY OR NOT A CUSTOMER NECESSITATED TO TRAVEL IN ORDER TO SPEAK IN PERSON TO YOUR MANAGER JUST TO MAKE A SIMPLE CHANGE REQUEST! ALL THIS AFTER SPENDING a FEW THOUSAND DOLLARS IN YOUR U.E.S. STORE EVERY YEAR BETWEEN SHOPPING FOR GROCERIES AND CATERING SERVICES! ITS PATHETIC!
I have been getting my groceries from this store for a long time but recently they have increased their price and things are ridiculously expensive.
My life saver, whenever Im lazy!
My favorite supermarket in NYC. Not cheap, but one of the only expensive supermarkets where you still feel youre getting a good value because the quality is extremely high.
Dont go to the store on the upper east side. I spent 30 minutes trying to get some cooked meat and vegetables. Their checkout machine could not read my debit card (which I use everywhere else all the time) so I had to leave the bag of groceries. I asked the cashier to hold it for me so my husband could go right back with another card. Meanwhile, my card was fine and the bank contacted me with a fraud alert because their machine tried to charge my card 3 times. And...when my husband went back 20 minutes later, the cashier told him that she did not hold the groceries for us. When you call, you can never speak to anyone on the phone. Stay away!
Very expensive for groceries but their deli, sandwiches and fresh pasta is great. We love the heros!
Agatha and Valentinas is the best food place in all of Yorkville. We are very happy they are in our neighborhood. Great news!
Ive had some good food from them in the past but it was expensive. This week however, I walked in and grabbed a bag of coffee beans even though most of the bags looked like they had been there for months. I grabbed one that looked the newest and had a label saying it was packed 2 weeks ago. I dont know if the label is a lie or if they usually just have such bad coffee but it was TERRIBLE. Tastes stale and bad amidst costing like 12 dollars and being recently packaged.Good selection overall though.
I have passed by this gourmet establishment many times this is the first time I went inside. AMAZING!!! Whatever you are looking for to eat, it is at Agata & Valentina. Clean and friendly. Think of something to eat. They have it!
Everyone who works there is so kind and helpful! The selection is great! Rlly great if you want to be low waste 😊🌱
Chocolate silk cake is deliciousThe place is good, good organics things
Pastries are very pretty but unfortunately not very good. The pastry crust is thick and oily and the filling flavors are saturated and overly sugared. Very disappointing given how overpriced, and when trying to support a local business.
I was enjoying this store for 6 weeks while I was renting apartment nearby till today, when I bought poke with rancid salmon. I had great time hugging a toilet. With those prices and amount of prepared food I thing this store should pay more attention for food quality.
Consistently excellent!
Great neighborhood grocery store that also host events. I took my 5 year old nephew to attend an one hour children pizza making class. There were 5 children; each child made 2 small pies with a variety of toppings. The instructor was extremely pleasant and patient. The class encouraged my nephew to want make more pizza for his parents. I purchased the ingredients. A & V products are fresh theres a large variety for all.
This place is always busy, the cheese selection is good, the pastas are fresh, the desserts could use a little work.
This place has quality items, Best prepared food. A centerpiece of the neighborhood. Well staffed, always fun to visit.
Very good store for prepared foods, far more flavorful than Citarella. Great selection of variety of produce.
I have been a loyal customer at 1st ave location since A&V first opened some years ago - my last few visits and been far from a nice shopping experience - security ordering me to push up face mask over my nose - yea I get it - but why be so rude - ask politely and not attempt to shame me - should there be a different price than what is indicated on store shelf and you point this out to the cashier what you get is attitude - I have been told the shelf product label with item price is wrong and no price adjustments - ok - yesterday I declined to purchase pasta sauce due to incorrect listed price, and cashier quickly snatched away the item and yelled NEXT for next customer - really bad attitude - Yea, I have my bad days, more so with this pandemic and yet I do not make someone feel bad or shamed for not having a face mask completely covering the nose. Its not what you say but how you say it. Will never set foot in A&V again.
Decent grocery choices, excellent hot bar and bakery, the butter cookies was my favorite.
Great prepared food, collection of groceries and helpful staff.
It has everything you need
Fantastic, reasonably priced grocer.
Always an adventure, they have a great selection of imported food. They also have a great selection of pastries made in house. It is a nice place to explore and get some goodies.
The fresh fish and deli are top notch. When you want to take a little trip to Italy, this is the market that will get you there without ever leaving the UES.
Good for prepared food. Has a good collection. A $$ neighbourhood grocery store.
Great food experience for those looking for some of the best prepared food in all of New York.
Agatha is a wonderful store. I love shopping there. The people working there could not be more helpful. And they are developing a good organics department.
Always with a great selection of food, this place inspires you to either cook or take out. Pricey but worth it. My only observation would be on the cashiers side - I have been enough times to see that some cashiers seem to hate their job and treat you like they are doing ‘you’ a favor. Never a good nice gesture or comment when you are placing your food to pay, or even when you leave. Manager should pay a bit more attention that that part of their device and everyone else around inside is really helpful and kind. Example the take-out, cheese guys, bakery and cold cuts slicing personnel are awesome, not so much the cashiers
Love 💘 this place there at least twice werk
Always a delight
Bought a tiramisu cake for my moms birthday on 4/14. After we sang for her and cut the first piece of the cake for her, she immediately noticed mold all over the cake. My first instinct was that it had to have been blue frosting, but she taste-tested it and it was sour and repulsive. You almost ruined her birthday, Agata. But we persevered and had a good time.We went the next day, with the entire cake put back in place, and got our money back. Wasnt much of a hassle. I wonder - if the employees were paid what they deserve during a pandemic, had proper training, had a welcome and friendly work atmosphere, and maybe didnt have to deal with the worst people in NYC - Upper East Siders - would this have happened?Anyway, shop somewhere else. I dont care who you are - give your business to literally any other shop around here.
Excellent prepared food
What an incredible place! So much fresh, awesome food in on place. It is convenient and prices are reasonable for the high-quality vegetables, meats, fish, bread and pastries, and cheeses. My wife and I visited twice when we were in NYC for three days. I highly recommend a visit soon!
Fantastic market full of wonder and deliciousness.
I adore this grocery store. The food is always fantastic. It is pricey, but it beats take out 9 times out of 10. My boyfriend and I have been coming here on Sunday evenings for years to get dinner. It’s such a fun tradition and I look forward to coming here each week. Can’t speak highly enough about this place! Also, their coffee is amazing- both the beans for sale and from the cafe inside!
A variety of items available theres something for all.
Love this store so much lot of great stuff love the pizza too
Incredible food... best on the UES!
Gorgeous market with great selection of refined produces. However, just had a frustrating customer experience at the cash register. From an employee who decided she had to collect my basket while I was emptying it; she literally throw my fruits on the counter ( why bother buying over priced fresh produces if the staff just bruise everything?). Then I noticed I was charged $12 for asparagus. Was told by the cashier she noticed the code was wrong but « it wasn’t it fault ». They couldn’t help fixing it and I got a lot of attitude when I asked to remove it from my grocery. Just very unfortunate and unpleasant.
Always greqt fresh italian food and groceries. Wish they had more stores around Manhattan
Excellent fresh fish and meats. Good salads and soups. Other prepared foods can vary in quality and freshness...So can the baked goods and pasta. Regular fruits and veggies are OK, but organics are overpriced and ofen not fresh. Cheese section is small but has a nice selection. Very nice selection of olive oils.
Best store on the Upper East Side. Pricey
Mostly everyone that works here is helpful and provide good to great service. They carry many specialty items, cheeses etc. Although extremely expensive, every so often the have sales on certain products. The bakery is amazing with varied goodies and fresh!! Store can get extremely crowded and the customers there are usually somewhat aggresive.
Still waiting for an item which has not been there for easily two weeks. Its supposed to be delivered today (10/09), but alas, it has not arrived...
Fabulous foods. This is a great place for some gourmet groceries and prepared foods. You will find fresh pastas and breads along with heat and eat meals. They sell a limited selection of fresh fruits and veggies.
Love this place for specialties. Pricey but excellent quality. The cheese selection is heavenly. Cooked meals to take home are tasty.
Have been going for years, but no more. Tired of prices going up and quality going down. Most of the prepared foods are very overcooked-- they should be embarrassed! Every time I go there, most every price has gone up. Over the last few years, some have gone up over 50%. Employees have poor attitude and never the same people working there--- wonder why?? Even management not responsive, only interested in bottom line $$. I Rather shop elsewhere were I am welcome and attitude is different.
The last stop on first avenue on your drive north to Westcester... choose from their great selection of whole bean coffee or their house olive oil.Their array of wonderful cheeses from all over the world is unequaled. They have an online ordering system that delivers within Manhattan. This family owned and operated specialty market has now a second location downtown on University Place.
Best place for cheese. The Mesclun Supreme Salad for 5.99 is amazing. Comes with dressing and is a great value for the size. We also grab the fresh mushrooms for home. Best tasting mushrooms. Comes in a bin for 2 dollars. Try them out.
If you have the money of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, go here often. The food is delicious. The prices are off the Richter Scale! I can get the same exact identical kinds of sushi at Fairway for $3 less a box!
Quality products with a premium price
Just 1 cross-town block and 2 up-town/down-town blocks from our crib, this place is a culinary feast for the eyes. You begin at the bread shelves, either go straight to the veggies or over to the cooked dinner area, then to the myriad of cheeses, fish, coffees, and around to the desserts placed right before the check-out registers (and with good reason) and you know your picnic will begin as soon as you get home!
I love this store. Try the Ricotta Gnocchi, the pulled pork, or the Asian chicken. They have a wide selection of hot and cold options, cheeses, produce, fish, butcher counter. Just a great all around store. My wallet is much lighter though after coming here.
Really nice and friendly staff. Almost everyone was lovely. Customers were a little snooty. I would definitely go back to try some more delicious food. Healthy tasting yet good. The store was clean and streamlined. Pizzelles were phenomenal.
Quality eats at a reasonable price! My kinda food shopping!🤙
Wonderful place...excellent working environment..today was my first day of trying me out at the butchers section..everyone was wonderful...great place to shop and work at...5stars👋👍👍👍👍👍
An UES landmark with delicious prepared foods, fresh pasta, and quality meat/fish/cheese counters. Not cheap, but also appropriately priced for quality & location. I still get nostalgic feelings walking through here!
Great store. I love they fish section. The have the best tuna on UES.
Great produce section, good hot prepared foods, meat section could be run better, terrible ice cream selection (its either their own gelato or vegan selections). Also, I know what people mean about staff, but the vibe has changed for the better in recent months as they have hired some new, very friendly employees! Pretty good grocery store by NYC standards.
Nice and safe environment. Very good pastry and cappuccino
Great selection of groceries, cheeses and meats in particular are awesome. Can get a little busy, but the line moves fast. Staff is friendly and helpful. A touch pricier than chain stores, but quality is worth it.
Delightful ambience...beautiful produce, deli, condiments. Lovely staff.
Agata has a fantastic prepared food section. But my daily go to is the seafood section- freshest in the locality.
17 years in the area and Italian born. This place used to be extraordinary but went deep down in quality and costuner service. Was my only place for food shopping but unfortunately few years ago i decided not to go back after my eyes got caught by a rat running into the store. Not only after realizing that several times they double charge you.I promised myself never to go back but this morning i had the unfortunate idea to have breakfast with my daughter.Really bad service, staff touching money and preparing food. Double charged me again. Served cold food when it was requested hot. Give me an attitude.People on the upper east watch out!
I agree with previous reviewers that the quality and the price of food varies day by day. I just read most disturbing review about the UES location made by their ex employee, that describes rewrapping goods and relabeling prices- that I believe, because just recently we had experience with our groceries not fresh and the prices for two the same type produce had different labels and even our register person got confused. We never had any issues upon check-out, but we do check the pricelist before we pay. I am sure is non intentional, when a lable is misread or the price is overlooked. Like in every market the customer is responsible for own buying experience...I do not buy premade salads and for fish I visit Ellys and Citarella and meats are best at Fleishers. We visit this place to get occasional beverage, some of their pastas and milk. Their cooked thin pizzas are good too.
Really great selection! Its small, but thats to be expected of NYC. The prices are actually on par with whole foods, etc. if you actually compare
This wonderful place opened years ago as a small Italian market and now takes over near a block on the UES. Was my go-to spot right across the street from my coop and now the first stop every visit. Love the owners and staff, not to mention the produce/meats/fish and fresh mozzarella ❤️😘❤️
One of those supermarket layouts where you shop your way to the registers. This stuff aint cheap but wow do they have an amazing selection of italian goods. If you want to do it up right and make a sexy dinner for somebody, pick up some ingredients here. Nice variety of produce too, did not check the butcher.
Shop here regularly... Its pricey but the food is fresh and prepared on site. Vegetables & fruits are very fresh as well.
Great selection of gourmet items and organic products.
Beautiful place and wonderful servicing! The owner was a gentleman and took his customer needs to be satisfied, nice gestures!
Excellent option for all things Italian. My typical visit here includes fresh pasta, mixed olives, a solid chunk of Pecorino Romano, and perhaps a pastry. Also available : a respectable meat section, with above average sausage, plenty of beef, pork, chicken, etc. The pinwheel steak is good although not always available.Very good fresh mozzarella, fresh ricotta, and lots of sauces to choose from. I prefer to make my own sauce and often pick up a can of San Marzano tomatoes, but ready-made sauces are sold here if you are challenged for time.Good bread available too. If you enjoy cooking or eating Italian food, this is a solid emporium with all sorts of options. Both the Upper East side and Village locations are worth checking out (I love the samples, in particular, at the University location downtown).
The fresh squeezed Sicilian blood orange juice is sensational. I’ve never had anything that compares to it. Speciality foods all very good (and you pay for it). Rachel Ray worked here before she hit it big!!
