As soon as I stepped inside the staff were friendly and ready to take my order! The rustic ambience indoors is not my personal style but is certainly unique. I sat outside instead, where they have vines, exposed brick, and lots of sunshine! The vines actually have hops on them, such a cute touch.I got the cappuccino and a cheddar bacon scone. The cappucino was very well prepared and they even did a little art on top which not many places do anymore. I usually lean a little more sweet on my coffee so I wish I had added a little sugar. The scone was yummy but I wish they could have warmed it up.
Locally owned and operated by some epic people. Offering not only amazing coffee that tastes really good, but banging cocktails and the coolest and friendliest staff. They genuinely care about each drink they make and providing the best service. Plus they combine forces with other locally owned businesses to host fun events mixing food, drinks and fun.
Outstanding staff! Professional, competent, thoughtful, and speedy service. To me this coffee shop is a cornerstone of my day. Its where I pick up my cape, not just my coffee. As a mother, as a community member, and as a patron of small business during a pandemic, this is how I get **** done! Cause life is no joke right now. And coffee gets me through!
My heart is so happy in this place. It has such a wonderful vibe, such insane coffee, but best of all, the ladies that work here are pure gold. Thank you for making me the BEST flat white I’ve ever had.
I think they have the best pour over in the city but I live in the neighborhood so I may be biased. The coffee is outstanding. The Bourbon Barrell cold brew is delicious and a growler or 2 is a must have in my house to get me through the humid summer. I love the chill vibe here and the music is always good. Great place to walk to in the summer and enjoy the patio. I think the owners have done an excellent job of growing their business over time.....adding pop-ups, food trucks, cocktails, etc. Great addition to the Garden District.
Really interesting interior. Wasnt expecting it. It was apparently an old bowling alley, so most of the original bowling Lanes are still visible in the flooring, pretty cool. The staff was super nice, the drinks were really good, and the prices were pretty typical for an individually owned coffee house.
Amazing Coffee, for a place in the Midwest to get 5 ⭐️ it has to be exceptionally amazing. Was passing thru town and was lucky and fortunate to find this gem! They roast their own beans and they are serious about it, friendly, knowledgeable and nice baristas + prices are fair another reason for a 5 ⭐️. Will always be my first stop enter the waukee area, what better way to start your WI trip!
Good coffee. Kind of an odd set up for the seating area. They are still working through some things.
Wasnt sure what to expect other than typical coffee stuff. Bakery was limited but still delicious. Ordered a dirty chai and it wasnt what Ive know chai to taste like. I expected sweet maybe cinnamon/vanilla with a slight added coffee bitterness. It was completely the opposite being more earthy with a bite. Im no expert but this was the only way I can think to describe it. It was a surprise for the first taste but I like finding different and new; that was exactly what this was. Very laid back atmosphere and chill music thats not too loud. Will definitely tell some of my coffee friends about this place! Bonus is they do go above and beyond with the social distancing without it seeming dramatic.
Best butter croissants in the city, hands down. Wonderful small coffee shop with excellent drip and flat whites. Cozy back lounge area and friendly staff!
Masks required. Popped in to pickup a large bottle of cold brewed Bourbon coffee. Friendly staff & quick service. Great products.
Good coffee. Cool space. Support local
Great coffee! Way better than the Mermaid.
In a town of good coffee roasters, this is the best. Lovely staff, fantastic local partnerships with food trucks, and their roasting is perfection. Coffee snobs: Mexico is where its at. Peru and Brazil are extremely close seconds.
First time here. Very unique and fresh coffees here. It was nice quiet and cozy. Not too expensive. Bourbon cold Brew is excellent. Hawthorne also has a full bar available with daily drink specials. There is a outside patio. Free WiFi available. We ate some raspberry muffins and cressants. Friendly staff. Wish the building exterior didnt look like an abandoned sports bar. Would definitely visit again.
I got a cup of the Guatemala pour-over; it is one of the top 3 cups of coffee Ive ever had. Going to be heading back today to pick up a pound for home. I really like their new space, too...very open and conducive to being responsibly distanced.
What a fun, quirky place! Hawthorne is in a converted bowling alley, complete with a fun hodge podge of decorations. You get a full mug of coffee -- plus an extra carafe of coffee -- for about $3. We went on a Sunday, so Donut Monster was there, which had a lot of interesting flavors of filled and ring donuts. Would highly recommend!
I had to wait 20 mins for my drink while they served the 6 people ahead of me. They charge for wifi after 2 hours. Coffee was good.
Awesome, fresh ground coffee. Tasty. Friendly.
Hawthorne is an absolute gem. Great service and unique offerings make it worth a stop. Personal favorite is the bourbon barrel cold brewed coffee!
4 things I love about Hawthorne Coffee Roasters#1 Whole milk seems to be the default, the barista usually asks “whole milk okay?” I love that I don’t have to specifically ask for it, because 2% and skim just aren’t good enough.#2 The vibe, I don’t know how to describe it other than laid back and “Cheers” like. I haven’t been in MONTHS because I hibernated November - January and the barista still remembers my name.#3 The pour over coffee is the best.#4 Kendra & Steve have been in the industry for most of their lives, they know what they are doing AND I feel confident that they treat their employees right.
Got a honey latte and a chai, they were both fantastic! Good ratio of honey to coffee (not too sweet!) and the chai was really nicely spiced. The space is very cool, nice and open indoor area with dividers and a beautiful patio as well. Theyre taking COVID restrictions very seriously, and I felt super comfortable!
Menu remains fantastic, limited but available seating inside.
Hawthorne has handled COVID precautions with EVERYBODY’S safety in mind. Their coffee and service is outstanding. I don’t drink alcohol however their alcoholic concoctions sound super fun!
Always a great place to go for terrific coffee and tea. Highly recommend.
Good coffee very smooth. Unique place.
Great coffee shop. Friendly staff.
Nice place great atmosphere and the coffee is very good as well. We will be back.
I cant wait to be at this location during the summer. Great place to hangout!
Great place coffee is tremendous and the place has a nice atmosphere. Better than Starbucks
Love their Revival espresso, great flavors punching through my cappuccino. Such a friendly staff, always kind.
Very cute place! Im coming back again!
Great coffee, great cocktails. Friendly and helpful staff! Super cool space too, cant wait to check it out when the world is less weird!
I only had a chance to see it with the covid precautions in place, but it was quite nice and the coffee was surprisingly good. It wasnt just coffee it tasted like you were at a specialty coffee store. I didnt try any of their food or snacks but they looked good and I look forward to when it opens up fully.
Hands down my favorite coffee shop in Milwaukee. The coffee is excellent, and the staff is even better. :)
ETA: Even better safety protocol in place now! Feels very safe- lots of space to distance, contactless ordering if youd like to sit in their large, partitioned side room, and their recent refresh makes such a pretty space if you want to get out of the house & get a change of scenery while drinking something tasty 😍Freshest beans in the city- my most recent lb was roasted the day before I bought it! 👏 Bourbon cold brew is excellent. Good COVID precautions in place.
Our hot lattes were smooth with a nicely crafted heart on top. Well be back.
Just under your nose and within arms reach of one another there exists legit barbecue, a proper pint of Guinness, and now high quality coffee. Charming progression along Howell Avenue!
They cater to everyone great coffee too would recommend to anybody that enjoys coffee
Great shop with phenomenal coffee and excellent staff!
Coffee was most definitely better than starbucks but I have had better. Unfortunately the staff asked that we wear masks, but they did give us masks.
Very covid safe... Love the chai tea!
While I only would give this place three stars for service, food, and value, it gets four stars for just being here! We dont have many coffee shops in this neighborhood and this one is really stepping up to the plate. I love the ambiance of the place, the decor and style of it is right up my alley - rustic, quirky, fun, and cozy. The service was pleasant, there is no vegan bakery that I saw, and my chai was nothing to scream about, hence the three stars for those things. But we still found a nice corner table and was able to have great conversation without loud music or kids running amok. Then we discovered a pop-up restaurant in the back, which Ill write about in a separate review. So, I hope this place does well here, I truly do want it to stay in the neighborhood. Id give it more stars if they offered better chai and vegan goods, but all in all, its a gem! UPDATE: They have totally redesigned the interior for Covid-19 safety and its terrific. They have been very on-top-of-it when it comes to keeping their business open safely and serving their customers with bloody mary kits, etc. We order from them just about every week. Definitely give them a try if youre in the area. Reviewed on 11/24/2020
Excellent coffee. Takes time and a bit more money than other places, but it is well worth it. $3 for a pour over which comes out to be about a cup and 3/4 of coffee. Absolutely delicious coffee at that. The shop is spacious with plenty of tables and room to work.
I love these guys! Theyre passionate about their beans and it shows. They help out the community and they are a pleasure to talk to.Their coffee cocktails are fun, too. Give em a shot.
Barista was really nice and the space is nice too. Drinks were good. They are taking health standards seriously and keep the business as safe as possible.
Had a great time at their anniversary social. The band was remarkable and included various local artists! The food was nothing short of delicious. I look forward to returning soon!
They have fantastic cold brew!
We stopped by for hot coco desserts. The person who took our order was really nice. When our hot coco arrived, it wasnt hot so I politely asked a server if she could heat it up. This server was not friendly at all. She presented herself as we if we inconvenienced her. Its a nice place but this server just left us feeling blah.
Great local coffee shop. The coffee is really well roasted and the atmosphere is homey. Their partnerships with food trucks and local restaurants make it a great place to get food and coffee!
Awesome atmosphere and delicious coffee
TLDR; Delicious REAL coffee. Not overloaded with sugar and flavored sweeteners. With great service.Had to review right away! Started our visit with friendly service and staff ready to educate in a non-condescending manner. I enjoy trying anything new and local that I cant get at home. So I tried to stray away from the usual dirty Chai. Got a honey latte. Bourbon cold brew. and a brewnecki. All the above were great but Cold brew won for me. Straight forward rich coffee flavor with a light aftertaste of bourbon. We will be going back... today .. with more family.
Bronecki is my favorite coffee drink
Excellent coffee, great space, my favorite coffee shop.
Best coffee in the 414. Change my mind.
Wow, went last weekend and came back for more coffee beans and bottle of the bourbon barrel aged cold brew. I can’t say enough good about the coffee as well as the owner and staff. We will be back for more coffee and to try the food
Our neighborhood needs this establishment! Great coffee. Good people.
Very nice approachable place. No decaf which probably affects few. Smooth coffee locally roasted. Nice decor. Eclectic customers. And hey they have a good bourbon selection. Foxfire food within is tasty. The popcorn was a big hit with adults and kid. The fazoli is fantastic! Made me sweat with taste delight.
This is like a hidden coffee shop that everyone needs to know about! I had a cup of Bourbon Barrel Coffee and the flavor was rediculously awesome! I dont know how Hawthorne does it but the Bourbon and Oak flavors went well with the coffee! They have a patio area that is very nice. The inside feels very welcoming and homey. We loved our visit
This place is located down the street from Dollar General on Howell Avenue. I’ve driven by the building and I have seen many restaurants open here but I’ve never gone in until today. It has a nice low-key laid-back atmosphere, I ordered an iced coffee drink which was good. If you want to avoid the crowds at Collectivo and avoid crowds downtown or Bay view, this place is for you because more quiet area. I hope they are able to stay here longer than other restaurants have at this location, but they will need to do more with the outside of the building to draw attention.
Wish we could have seen the scene, looked fun. We just had a few espresso drinks and some egg bacon hand pies and all was excellent!
Excellent coffee while there or to prepare at home. Consistently delicious and creative cocktails. Wonderful people!
The service is slow, because they fresh brew everything as you order it. they dont have fancy machines or, Starbucks mentality. it definitely feels like youre walking into a real coffee shop, since they do everything from the roasting all the way up to the serving. This is near my house and has become a regular stop for us. The only thing I could recommend is perhaps having some music. also they could probably benefit from finishing there construction in the other rooms.
Excellent coffee. The bourbon cold brew is a highlight. Love the feel of the space and enjoy the food trucks serving lunch.
Seems like a little hole in the wall type of place. It comes off as being made with a lot of love, too.Their drink options are great, and theyve got some unique options. Their bourbon aged ice coffee is phenomenal, and tastes exactly how youd expect.
Bourbon cold brew is excellent! Staff are friendly and the atmosphere is both quirky and cozy; there are lots of interesting and cool visual pieces in the space to look for. Tons of tables and a few cushy chairs and couches.
We visited here for the first time for coffee on a frigid Sunday morning. The coffee is made via pour over method, and is not pre-made drip coffee, so it takes a little extra time. We werent in a hurry, so we were happy to wait. Especially since there were freshly made donuts being sold there that day. We got the cherry almond fritter and cheesecake filled donut. Both were fantastic! A nice crowd gathered over the hour we were there, as well as folks just stopping by for coffee and/or donuts to go. A great addition to the neighborhood! So happy we checked it out, and would love to try their creative sounding cocktails on our next visit!
This place is very unique and has a fun atmosphere. Lots of coffee drinks, a very nice selection of whiskeys, and they also have a cantina located inside that offers some really good food. Check it out!
My favorite place in the city to get an exceptional cup of coffee. The quality is excellent and the atmosphere is relaxing and down to earth. My only regret is not being able to come here more frequently.
Great place for serious coffee. No drip coffee and no syrups, and they roast the beans right there in house. If you need some serious caffeination, order The Hawthorne and you’ll get a tasting of their pour-over, their cold brew, and their espresso. And definitely come on Saturday mornings when Press is there selling waffles!(Yes, the outside signage still needs a little work... trust me, don’t judge it by its cover.)
Local nice people.. Great neighborhood meeting spot.. a nice walk to place for an excellent drink.
Love this place :)
They have the smoothest and best coffee in the area. The staff is also very helpful and knowledgeable about there offerings
I visited this place to try out the fox fire truck’s menu which has chicken and waffles on Saturday. The breaded chicken with assortment of sauces available was lip smacking. I will definitely be back.
This is a quaint, rustic spot to grab coffee and waffles. I enjoyed a waffle with blueberry compote, lemon curd and whipped cream on top. The waffle was crispy on the outside and soft inside. It wasnt overly sweet which was good.
Greatest neighborhood coffee shop around. And they serve more than coffee.
Excellent coffee. Has choices for adult coffee beverages. Hope this place can do well and take off. Only criticism is the overall feel of the place needs to be warmed up. Kinda has that feeling of a supper club past its prime yet. That has no bearing on the quality of what they are making though and I will look forward to going back and trying more of what Hawthorne has to offer! Please support this local business!
This place has excellent coffee, some of the best in Milwaukee. The space looks a little rough around the edges, but its charming, and the coffee is certainly coffee geek approved. It is well worth the trip out here. They sell beans as well so if you enjoy something you can take it home.
Hawthorne never fails to please.
