Great local coffee shop! Online ordering system works smoothly, and currently you can pickup with masks on at the door. JPH has a patio in the front on Johnson Street, with six tables and plenty of outdoor seating. Several non-dairy milks available, including oatmilk. Their lavender lemonade was very refreshing.
A thoroughly enjoyable cold brew, some well balanced lavender lemonade (not overpowering), and jammy toast for my 7yo, which was quality and well enjoyed.
This place has seriously gone downhill since they started serving out of the cart. If its as much of an inconvinence as you make it seem to serve your in-person customers, perhaps you should consider switching to solely online ordering.
Im really disappointed in this place. I had heard it was good and it was highly recommended on Google based on the other places in Madison that I love. I got an oatmilk latte with vanilla and the egg bowl with avocado. My husband got a chai latte with almond milk and granola. With a 20% tip we were over $30. Thats not pricey for brunch, but for some mixed greens, half of an avocado, and fried eggs being the entirety of the egg bowl and the granola being a bowl of yogurt with a 1/3 cup of granola and some fruit on top, it was disappointingly overpriced. Its not that food wasnt good, but it was nothing to return for. The actual location is good, but the inside is in dire need of a deep cleaning. Im glad we visited, the employees were very nice, but we wont be back.
Al makes the best iced oat matcha. Thanks Al 💕
Ive been visiting JPH regularly since they took over the space from In the Company of Thieves. A modern, hip addition to the East side. Great coffee thoughtfully sourced from excellent roasters (and oftentimes from their own Kin Kin brand). A must stop for a morning in Madison - dont miss out on the ham & pesto breakfast sammich.
My absolute favorite place for coffee and food in Madison. Has been for years. Food always hits the spot!!! The roast beef breakfast sandwich oh my 🤤 coffee is top notch too. Just take all my money.
Hands down the best coffee in town.
Love this place! I moved from the SF Bay Area a couple of years ago and JPH’s quality is just as good as a big city. Great coffee. Healthy and tasty food. The family that owns this are two talented people. Support them and check out their new website: jph4ever.com.
Great cafe and hangout spot. The coffee variety, grade and brewing is top notch. They have a mini food menu; delicious and worth trying. Usually split a breakfast sandwich or some pastry. Friendly and efficient staff. Reasonable cost. Summertime they have outdoor seating and it’s lovely. Would have given it 5 stars but in so many years they have not improved ventilation. At times, especially in winter it get smelly and stuffy in there. Not all of us want to smell like coffee and burned grease for the rest of the day. This is the top reason that keeps me from going often. Hope they can improve that. Enjoy!
What a fantastic place! The coffee is amazing and the breakfast plate was totally yummy. Two eggs over a nicely dressed salad and toast seems a little strange but it was absolutely delicious. Highly recommended!
Best coffee in Madison, hands down--always consistent and worth the price. Good place to study/people watch if you can find a table and dont mind leaving with your clothes smelling like their delicious Bfast sandwiches. :) Randomly, their sassy avocado toast is the perfect small-but-not-boring breakfast before a workout!
I was looking for a reinvention of the doughnut, one that didnt have that weird flavor in the bread that prevents me from eating more than two.I found it here, in a vanilla doughnut. Kudos, Johnson Public House!P.S. they have a GoFundMe for a standalone doughnut place
Great friendly staff, JPC Electric.
Some of the best coffee in the world. The staff are so friendly and helpful. Food is delicious as well.
Coffee was okay, no foam on cortado or cappuccino. Toast was burnt.Donuts will make me want to come back to this place every day for the rest of my life.
Easily one of my favorite coffee shops in town! I love the atmosphere and the drinks are always yummy. The only reason I’m giving JPH a 4/5 stars is because I miss their chocolate sandwich. I was sad when they changed their menu and replaced their toasted chocolate and strawberry filled magical deliciousness with a waffle. 🙁
Very cozy cafe that serves fantastic breakfast food. Great place to chat over coffee or to get some office/school work done. Highly recommend the regular breakfast sandwich. And very friendly service! Would highly recommend this hidden gem.
I love this place. I got great service today - coffee wasnt to my liking today for some reason and they swapped it out with an herbal tea. Pancakes were stellar - real maple syrup too.
The food is very tasty. Decent portion sizes. Nice environment. Moderate prices. Give the Johnson Public House a try 🤗. I wouldve given this place 5 stars, but I feel I need to go to this place a bit more to give out 5 stars.
Easily pulls some of the best espresso in the city. When I was there, they had Intelligentsia and Kin Kin beans. The former is a household name, but the latter was absolutely fantastic. Definitely opt for the small operation if they have the choice. Espresso was served with sparkling water – the proper way! The food was good and delivered quickly. The atmosphere is super laid back and unpretentious. A must-do for espresso lovers.
Good place for some coffee & solitude or a date. Semi kid friendly. Student friendly. Nice servers.
JPH is honestly one of the best coffee shops in Madison. I used to live in the area and go there all the time. Their coffee is superb, and their breakfast sandwiches are so tasty (seriously, try the Roast Beef minus the roast beef!).Now, whenever Im back in town, I make sure to stop in at least once for a latte and sandwich!
Welcoming local cafe and coffee shop. Their entire menu is delicious! The coffee and tea are made fresh right in front of you. They also offer beer. There is a nice outdoor space to enjoy in the summer. Ideal place to come and get some work done or meet up with friends. Good wifi!
The best cappuccino in all of Madison. the lavender and mint puts it levels above the rest. And do not sleep on the peanut butter toast with blackberries drizzled with honey!!! Love love love show your love.
Maybe the most hipster coffee shop Ive been to. Espresso is great. And their bfast sandwiches too
I come here to work. I find it to be a nice place to be productive, as well as get a coffee and some food, both of which are always deliteful. Staff and others that come to JPH are chill folks. Would recommend :)
Went with my friend and my (relatively well behaved) toddler. Great atmosphere, fun and friendly service, DELICIOUS breakfast! DELICIOUS COFFEE! No high chairs but I wasnt expecting them to have one. They DO have a changing table.Highly satisfied, definitely going again sometime!
I love their coffee and staff. The price is pretty high, so I dont come as often as Id like, but the coffee is definitely some of the best in the area. Their breakfast sandwiches are also great. I recommend trying the ham one, which had make syrup cooked into the bread.
I ordered the French press with the Colombian beans and it was delivered quickly and piping hot. The environment is very laid-back and comfortable. The perfect place to read a book in the morning while drinking coffee and enjoying a nice breakfast.
OMG!! This place was awesome!! Just went in to warm up while waiting on the bus. It was late almost closing time. This place smelled so so good! I really thought they were baking blueberry pie. It actually was tea. The people behind the counter were so nice. They made all 3 of us a cup of tea and gave us WONDERFUL bakery goods to go with the tea. We definitely will be making this place a habit!!!
Can’t get enough of this place. They have a wonderful team selection and make great recommendations if you are ready to add a tea to your list of go-to beverages. Atmosphere is wonderful, especially in warmer months when the extra outdoor seating is an option.
First time here today ordered the breakfast bowl. The potatoes were raw and not fully cooked, the bread they use for toast was chewy and I ordered my eggs scrambled and they were cooked hard, I also asked for cheese in my eggs and it was laid on top not what I asked for. Why can you people not add it in the eggs before cooking them is beyond me learn how to cook! This was by far the worst breakfast not to mention they have nothing to drink not everyone drinks coffee, they had one juice and one soft drink everything else was either a water or beer, Not a Good Breakfast at all!Not worth the 28.00 we were charged!!!!!
Such a fantastic place to go for food and coffee also if you need a cozy place to sit down and get some work done or read a book I can highly recommend them.
Ive never had a bad experience here. Fantastic coffee, and the pastries are fresh and awesome. Staff are friendly and relaxed - a classic indie coffee shop. And, their breakfast skillet is amazing - toast, eggs, and potatoes. Plus, plenty of outdoor seating when the weather is nice.
Cozy, and artsy coffee house that is in a quiet neighborhood a short walk from downtown. Great coffee and food options. A nice coffee shop for visiting with friends, doing solo work on a laptop or reading.
Wonderful space to grab a coffee, bite to eat, and do some studying. Usually the atmosphere is very relaxed with people doing work or light chit chat. Their coffee and food are top notch and staff are always quick and kind. If you live in the area its a great spot to make your homebase, and if not, Id still recommend stopping in for a breakfast sandwich and americano.
I really enjoy iced coffee, but their iced coffee is so good, and so smooth, I dont even need to add any milk --- thats never happened before. Best iced coffee Ive ever had. And the food is really good. Along with Marigold Kitchen, this was our go-to place for breakfast when we were in Madison for a week. No question well be back here.
Some of the best food and coffee on town. Dog friendly.
Expertly prepared pourover coffee and espresso from extremely knowledgeable staff. Excellent coffee from Kin Kin. Prices are a bit extreme. Always great art on the walls
Im from out of state, so I was wonderfully surprised by the way the baristas do individual pour-overs vs. brewing an entire batch of coffee and giving their customers a portion. I wish I had had more time to spend there, and hopefully will get a better shot next time Im in Madison.10/10 would recommend.
I was a JPH weekend regular until about a month ago when I went in and had a really terrible customer service experience. I tried to order my usual drink in my usual personal cup and the barista, who I did not recognize as one of their usual weekend crew, told me that I was ordering the wrong thing. He proceeded to tell me all of the other things I should be ordering (none of which were the same). I had been going there every weekend and none of the other baristas had made this an issue. I myself am a barista and I have never spoken to a customer the way I was spoken to and the experience felt like the coffee snobbery that I don’t expect from a friendly neighborhood cafe. I emailed them as an individual to express my concern and never heard back.
Good food and good coffee. Although every time Ive gotten good there, theyve forgotten something we ordered.
Decent prices, okay coffee. Was easy to sit and get some work done. Nice staff and customer. The space needs some TLC
Never been in before and needed coffee omw to work. Stopped in to grab some and a quick bite to eat. Menu very poor and they did not start making what I did order until after I already had my late. I’m still here waiting and my food is not even in the toaster yet. Definitely never coming back if the service is gonna be so poor and slow.
Amazing coffee selection. Great staff.
Espresso: loved it, very nicely done. It seems they put a lot of care into their pour-over coffee as well.Internet: had a nice little sign displaying the network name... but wait, I still need the password :/ had to ask a nice barista.Atmosphere: very cool spot, art was a cohesive series by one artist which was nice. I enjoyed the music but it was a little on the loud side for getting work done or calm conversation.Overall: great place that seems to be very popular.
Great space. Coffee was fantastic and the ambiance was perfect for doing some work or meeting up with friends.
Their coffee is great. I would go here more if they had sugar-free options for their lattes. Definitely the most hipster coffee shop that Ive been to in Madison.
The Johnson Public house is kind of like the anchor that developers talk about when they need one in an up-and-coming neighborhood. I am a bit of a coffee snob and so are they and sometimes two coffee snobs dont make a match. They prefer bright blends and single origins for malty flavor to my palette this means acidic coffee that tastes like the smell of straw. I also havent found that a Bunsen burner and glass lab tubes enhance the taste of coffee, lots of expensive ceremony. Other than my disagreement with their tastes the space is well laid out for meeting other people or working on a laptop.
Best coffee in Madison, hands down. Coffee game on point. Dont mess around, ya hear? What you doin at those other places? If you want good coffee you need to come here immediately. Like right now. Like, if youre reading this at 2am (are you, why? Did you have too much bad coffee elsewhere and cant sleep because you thirst fr a tastier brew? I thought so) go there now and wait till they open. Dont mess around. This is serious business.
Beer, wine, tea. Not too much seating and it seems like people just claim a spot and stay all day. Thats not really the fault of the place but they could discourage that when its busy. It also smells a little funky.
Cozy place to hang out. They take their coffee and tea seriously. Small food menu including the most amazing avocado toast! No lie!
A staple in the E Johnson area. Wonderful coffee and delicious things to eat. Can be crowded, but so what. I dont take my coffee very seriously and feel like these guys and gals definitely do, which I guess is the reason my coffee is always so stinking good!
Second best breakfast sandwich in town ♥️
Food is solid, but they clearly cannot handle a crowd. We ordered sandwiches (not grilled, just plain sandwiches) to go and had to wait almost an hour and a half. Our friend luckily lives across the street, so it was no bother for us. One cashier was friendly, the other less so, but given the back-up, I couldnt blame her.I recommend coming here when it is not too busy.
Great food, great place. Many love it here.
Awesome food, great atmosphere, and good coffee. Not much else you can ask for.
GREAT food and drinks made with quality ingredients. Friendly quick service and relaxing environment.
Best coffee roaster (Kin Kin) and top 2 coffee shop in Madison! Can’t go wrong with any coffee drink but I do prefer the single origins to the espresso blend.
Great coffee. The baristas are always knowledgeable about the coffees they have. Tasty pour-overs and lattes. Great food, too. A bit pricey, but worth it.
Amazing ham sandwiches with this great rosemary dressing that I wish I could somehow recreate. Coffee is also absolutely delicious. Love the atmosphere and the owners are two of the best people I have ever met.
Johnson Public House and their sister brand KinKin are some of the most exciting things to happen to the Madison coffee scene in a long time--and Madison has a great coffee scene as it is. The best part is its run by a great family who sincerely just want to serve the highest quality coffee, beer, and food possible in a casual and friendly environment. This is a gem that will become a neighborhood legend.
As an out-of-towner, I found the ordering a little stressful. The different blends and brewing options were alien to me. With little help from the menu, I ordered what the person in front of me ordered, but chose a different blends to hide my ignorance. When I finally got my coffee it was delicious. So at least it worked out in the end.
The staff is great. I have always been very satisfied with their work. They are a bit pricey.
The coffee is some of the best in the city, but prepare to wait (and wait, and wait) if you want to sit at a table during busy hours. The local art for sale is always enjoyable, and its a great place to sit and work (hence the wait).
Best coffee in town.
Coffee here is fantastic and the atmosphere can’t be beat!
Quiet place t ok study and chat. Warm and different decorations.
Excellent food, especially breakfast, with a hip, low key atmosphere. Just don’t go when looking for a quick bite
Little too hipstery for me, man. All the same, the bean juice is flowin so ✌✌✌✌✌ from me!
Went here for an Arcade Night thing that they do like once a year. It was really really flippin fun. Gonna do it again this year for sure!
Chill spot, tasty food, friendly people, reasonable prices.
Fantastic atmosphere, great service, great coffee. Fun events. Were blessed by an abundance of great coffeeshops.
A stellar selection of coffee from artisan roasters made to order in a eclectic setting. Not the place to visit if you are in a hurry as the staff works at a very deliberate pace. Not cheap, but the price reflects the quality of the product. No qualms about the quality of the wi-fi, even when the place is at capacity, which is often the case.
Great coffee with excellent decor
Lets be honest, this place has great coffee and they are good at speciality artisan coffee. That being said: if you want friendly, approachable customer service and timely service this isnt your place. Pricey as well. Daily coffee drinker and I live less than 500 ft from JPH but still only end up there once every couple months.
Excellent pour over coffee. Small menu, but solid coffee shop food. Great place to get work done.
Delicious food, great coffee, knowledgeable and well-trained barristas. At times it feels like Hipster Central, but the vibe is welcoming to all. A neighborhood institution.
Sandwiches are really tasty. The roast beef is especially good.
Madisons best for authentic coffee experience. After trying many coffee shops in the area, this one takes the cake for best coffee. They serve coffee the way it was meant to be served: press and pour-over. Espresso is spot on as well. Not just for coffee snobs - atmosphere is great. Art on the walls supporting local artists, music is appropriate, plenty of seating, free wifi. Service is excellent - struck conversation with barista and they bring coffee to your seat. Also, they serve beer! Will bump to 5 stars when they accept cards and bicycle benefits.
Excellent cafe that really made me aware of how complex coffee can be!
They have really cool events here where they bring arcade games. People there to study will give you dirty looks if your game is loud. Also its expensive.
Tuna melt is out of this world. Super friendly staff
I dont know what the hype is about. Its just a millenial/hipster focused coffee shop.
