A couple years ago, my tire was punctured by a nail in the outside 1/3 of the tread. Even though the tires only had 10K miles on them, all the big stores insisted that I buy two new tires. Barry Winfield explained that it may not work (too close to sidewall) but was willing to give a patch a try. I got another 40K miles on those tires and now see Barry for tires for all my cars.
