We just woke up from a wonderful night sleep and are enjoying a cup of coffee in the downstairs restaurant. This place is an oasis on our trip from Salt Lake City to Seattle. The drive today will be easy after our stay here. We booked directly with The Landing Hotel, rather than give Expedia the 50% commission they charge the family owned hotel.

My problem is not with the business itself but rather the owner. I only spent a total of twenty minutes in this place and was baffled by how the owner treated his staff and how full of himself he was. He treated the staff as if they were insignificant and bellow him. Secondly, he is completely engrossed by himself and his work and is completely lacking self-responsibility for any problems that go on in the restaurant, everything that goes awry is the doing of another person. That being said I would strongly encourage you to weigh your options before spending your time or money here.

This is a great place to bed down while traveling. The rooms are charming and warm. The beds are very comfortable. My meal was delicious and covenant because I was only in town for business and not touring the local tastes around town. I love the throw-back, historic charm of the rooms/lounge area of this lodge. My only reason for not giving a five star rating is the train that services the area. Other than that, I appreciate the level of attention given that provides to the customer a great overall experience.

Such a cute place! Stayed here since it was a little over halfway on our drive from Pocatello to Portland. Super easy to get to from the freeway. We were really looking forward to eating dinner there and getting a drink but plans changed and we ended up getting after the kitchen was closed. First a note for those concerned with mask safety: of the five people we saw working in the kitchen over the course of our stay (these were the only staff members we encountered), only one had their face covered. We stayed here for the weekend with my wife, son, and mother in law for a wedding. We loved it! Room (King Deluxe) was large, well appointed, clean and exactly what youd expect from an older home. The bathroom was pretty small, and the clear-ish door to the bathroom was kind of a surprise! We used the throw blanket from the bed to cover it up. Other than that, super clean, quiet and charming. The restaurant was an unexpected surprise. What a fortuitous decision I made to take a little extra time in a trip to Idaho and stay the night in La Grande for a much needed Me party. The Landing Hotel was just as expected - charming with a cozy homey atmosphere. The pleasant surprise was the dinner! Chef Merlyn may truly be a magician, mixing magic and artistry on a plate. How many times have I passed by La Grande in a rush to get to Idaho or Utah? Never again because my stomach was not big enough to sample every dish so I have to come back. His wine list is also incredibly eclectic even offering an orange wine from Italy! Thank you to everyone especially Chef Merlyn and Jessica!

We stayed here with 2 other couples on our way to the Oregon coast. The hotel is oozing with character and charm. The room was adorable, the bed was comfortable with high quality linens. The floors were squeaky, which was fine for us, but would have probably stressed me out if our kids were with us. But, it just added to the charm. And if you stay here, you MUST eat breakfast here. Everything we ordered was delicious! My husband and I ate every last bite of our oatmeal and the lemon curd is to die for! Would definitely recommend this to our friends and stay again.

We just had a mini getaway to La Grande from Boise, Idaho and we absolutely loved and enjoyed our stay. We stayed downstairs in room 5 and it was absolutely beautiful. Hardwood floors, ceilings and walls. Room was rustic/farmhouse style with charming furniture and decor. The bathroom was incredible with fun vintage tile. We loved the little extra touches in the room — down comforter and pillows (very comfy bed), hair dryer/makeup towel/soaps and lotions in the bathroom, even a stepping stool for me to get on the bed — I’m short and the bed is on a beautiful black wood bed frame. There was even a little sitting area in our room with a huge mirror, chair, and foot ottoman. We ordered breakfast (Belgian waffles and breakfast plate) and dinner (ribs, fettuccine, and chicken salad) from the restaurant and it was seriously amazing and delicious. We happened to be there this weekend with the crazy snow but it was still amazing. Our car had a rough time getting around the unplowed side streets so we ended up walking down the street to JaxDog bookstore. We had a great time browsing the books. We also went to see a movie at the local movie theater down the street. Also made a few trips to Safeway for snacks and drinks. Honestly if I had no responsibilities and nowhere to be, the Landing Hotel sounds like the perfect place to be snowed in at. We had a dreamy time and cannot wait to come back!

However the waitress this morning was short with us and extremely rude. Although we were not dressed fancy, so I think she judged us. What a great historical hotel, not your normal hotel as it’s a boutique hotel. Wood floors, wood walls, wood ceilings. Very cozy atmosphere in the historic district of La Grande Oregon. I will stay here every time I visit La Grande.

My wife and I had a wonderful two nights here last week. This small former boarding house has been redone in a way that contrasts the original frontier architecture with sophisticated design touches. We felt quickly at home. The staff was very helpful and accommodating. It may even have rubbed off - I found myself feeling concern that we not leave anything that might inconvenience the next guests. I am not an abuser of hotel rooms, particularly, but I cant say Ive felt that way that before. The inviting open, very comfortable downstairs bar / dining area / living room has a beautifully curated library of about 100 volumes that exemplified how much care and attention has been invested here. It had everything from the Bible to modern French novels. The food here was marvelous. The first night I had a ribeye steak with the chefs King Joseph sauce that was really succulent. My wife had seared halibut that was equally good. My wife ran into Merlyn Baker, the aptly named chef, having a glass of wine after dinner and he was able to recommend some good local wines to bring home. Breakfasts were good as well. The attentive and friendly service deserves mention as well.In short, we highly recommend The Landing. The only negative thing to mention is that the railroad is a block behind the hotel, and trains run at night, so bring earplugs.

I really enjoyed this hotel, a quaint old house converted into an excellent and well decorated boutique hotel. The entrance to the place and the rooms is all keyless, and there is a bar and kitchen on the first floor. There are only 5 rooms, and they were exquisitely furnished with antiques and an incredibly comfortable king sized bed (in room 1 where we stayed). The noise from the busy street outside wasnt bad at all, the the bathroom and shower was to die for.The dinner cooked by the chef and delivered to our room during these Covid times was excellent, kudos to the meal preparer. In the morning they start serving a lovely breakfast menu, which I had to forgo because unlike the previous night, the young kitchen cook making breakfast decided she didnt need to wear a mask at all, and that made me decide to skip eating breakfast there and was the only reason they didnt get 5 stars, that and the upstairs floors are so old and wooden, you could barely walk across them without creaks and moans from the wood all the way across.Aside from those small hiccups, it was a lovely stay and I easily see why they got 4.8 out of 5 stars on Google. Would stay there again.

This was an absolutely lovely stay. The building has been beautifully renovated while maintaining the charm of an older home. The family who owns it is very kind and attentive. We stayed in the King suite #1. The room was cozy, clean and the bed was incredibly comfortable, easily the best we slept on during our trip. We ordered breakfast at the bar (the Alaskan Salmon bagel, huckleberry scone with Devonshire, country breakfast, and espresso) and it was sooo good. Scrumptious. I wish we could have stayed longer to try their dinner menu. If we pass through La Grande again, we will make sure to stop by for a bite to eat at the very least. Read this whole review - THE BAD !!! Do not book a room if you plan on sleeping. They are located on really busy corner with a signal. There are trucks starting up from the stop light all night. The all reave up their power. You will get NO sleep. You would be better to sleep on the freeway as that traffic is constant and smooth. There are trains all light and the tracks are about two blocks from the hotel. Actually, the trains are not bad compared to the traffic on the two streets siding the hotel. We had the large room with two bedrooms, but one bath (3.5 feet X 8 including the toilet, sink and shower)( I measured it) and that bath has a door that is glass ((((AND YOU CAN SEE RIGHT THRU IT)))). Ok for a couple, but dont even think of two couples. We made reservations to stay there because we had heard such rave reviews about the food in the restaurant -----well, the day before we arrived one of the kitchen workers was exposed to Covid --- you guess it, No Dinner Service!!! NOW THE GOOD!!! We did have breakfast there and it was extremely good. The dining room is certainly my style and is run it very well. The people were all exceptionally nice. The place is my style for sure. Renovated old house, the floors are the old hardwood, creek a lot, but are shiny and clean. The rooms are white as can be and really clean - and quite large. Lots of towels and bedding is white and really clean. I was extremely taken by the place until we tried to sleep. The night was horrible and I am one that can sleep thru almost anything --- but not loud large pickup trucks - and that is what everyone drives. If you have to stay there get room #5 as it is on the first floor in the back. I am so disappointed, as I thought we had found a place that would be one day away from home, with good food and a cute place to stay. Almost forgot - you have to pay for TV....can you believe that!LS - Eagle, Idaho

I am a little late in my review due to traveling. I had the opportunity to stay at The Landing in October during my first trip to La Grande. First, what an adorable little town - literally where everyone knows your name and so friendly. The best way I can describe The Landing is where vintage, farmhouse and modern all come together to give a very classy and yet extremely cozy atmosphere. Between the original wood floors, massive book shelf where you can grab a book and then sink into a blue velvet couch with a glass of wine...pure relaxation. The restaurant was beyond phenomenal. Homemade scones with lemon curd for breakfast. Crab Cakes and French Onion Soup for dinner with a generous slice of chocolate ganache cake - the right ending to a perfect meal. To make everything even more personal was the fact that the waitstaff was so friendly and you could tell they loved what they were doing. Chef Merlin came out of the kitchen and we talked about our gardens. Our waiter, Mr. Ambert taught me a secret on how to make apple pies (you have to ask him how much his homemade apple pies weigh)The room was pure comfort. I loved the sound of the trains that ran through the night ... (I was told the next morning that the trains were going to stop running through the night. I dont know if this has actually happened - Secretly, I hope not!). I am planning on another trip with my husband in the near future and fingers crossed there will be a room available...and Helen will make me a latte with a one of a kind art design :-)

Overall we thought this was a well done small historic hotel with comfortable rooms, good bed and the advantage of an exceptional bistro right downstairs. We dock it a star because: 1) the trains run through town close by and lay on their horns all the way, 2) the queen suite is just 2 regular rooms with an adjoining door. That might be useful for some, but not what we thought we were getting, and cost us an extra $30.Nevertheless, despite the above nits, nice place. And LaGrande is quite handsome town in the mountains, not at all what we expected (thought it was a dusty cow-town).

Back to the time when customer service mattered when a hotel’s lounge was filled with the warmth of the guests as they relaxed together amongst books on the shelves, hot drinks in their hands and stories to be told.Oh, and don’t go out looking for a meal. I urge you to stay and enjoy the delicious food made by an amazing chef. Dining at The Landing is like finding a hidden gem. This is a great place for a romantic date, or even better, a place to take friends so you can sample from each other’s plates and try more delectable treats (hint: try the Key Lime Pie).Don’t dread looking for a place to stay in La Grande – in fact, make it a destination – even if it is only to stay at The Landing Hotel and Dining. You won’t be disappointed.
