Fun interior and sweet ice cream. This store could be one of the hot spots for the travelers, and you may want to visit here if you like ice cream! I personally recommend you the Ube flavor ice cream. If you can stay and sit down in the store while you enjoying the ice cream, it would be much convenient and good. But now, die to the covid restriction, its kind of difficult to find the place to seat around this store. The price is not kind neither. If you want to try to taste something special ice cream from Hilo, you may want to try this store. You could park your car at the shoulder of the road.
Just a fun little shop. I tried the mango and ube (purple sweet potato) ice creams, and my wife had the chocolate macadamia in a pineapple. It has the feel of a family owned place, with the hostesses serving up a lot of bubbly personality along with their snacks. The mango ice cream had chunks of mango mixed in, and the ube has a bit of a starchy texture, so these flavors are the real deal, nothing artificial about it (well, maybe the color is enhanced a bit). Try the exotic flavors, and pile on the toppings of you want to get the full experience. Some of the concoctions I saw people walking out with were really wild, and the mini pineapple is bigger than you probably think it will be...
Great ice cream, acai bowls and coffee. If there was indoor dining, itd probably be even better. They have a great story and the store is nicely decorated.Be prepared to wait as the line gets pretty long. There are some items which take longer than others but for our acai, coffee and scoops of ice cream, it was pretty speedy after ordering
This place would get 5 stars from me for location and variety/quality of food, BUT.... 1) everyone is moving to paper or compostable plastic (vegware); 2) youre a stones throw from the ocean; 3) plastics are a huge problem for our oceans. Not only do the shakes come in fossil-fuel plastic but sandwiches do too (giant clamshells). As we left my husband said, who does plastic anymore? If you had more environmental options, we would have bought more.
Ordered a club sandwich that was big enough for 3 people for sure. Acai bowels w fruit and the ice cream was awesome!
We just stopped here while our tour guide was picking up our poke` across the street. The ice cream was incredible.
Smoothies are divine here! And the atmosphere/ energy is superb. I hope this place doesn’t change. I go there pretty frequently and they have followed the covid regulations and always are super clean. Prices are a bit steep but the quality they put into their items far makes up for it. Also have an engaging playlist depending on the DJ.
We got the aloha acai bowl and added Mac nuts and kiwi. It was AMAZING. Their coffee looked good too but we didnt get it.
Yummy! I risked getting the Unicone because I wanted to try something new since I was here and it was so good!
Dragonfruit acai bowl is amazing and huge! My favorite bowl out of all the places Ive been including in Oahu.
We liked the ice creams the best. Everything was good, the service was fast.
We got the unicone which had a fun pink and purple swirl color for the ube and dragonfruit mix and sprinkles. In my opinion the dragonfruit was a little too sweet so it did overpower the cone, but overall very pretty and refreshing on a hot day.
Try the unicone Ube ice cream and passion fruit ice cream mixed sooo good. Acai bowl with chocolate chips also very tasty!
Super cool little, LOCAL Smoothie, bowl, salad & sandwich eatery! Smoothies were great ...a perfect break from a hot day of hiking and sightseeing. Love finding local treasures like Makanis!
Always a feast for the eyes and the belly. Ube shake is the favorite and Acai bowls are a must...at least once a week!
I absolutely love this place. The food is incredible and the ice cream is delicious. My only complaint would have to be the small red-headed girl who is always rude to customers. She seems to be the only one with a bad attitude in the entire place, always glaring and yelling at people. Probably best to keep her in the back
So good! Kids loved it. I expected the ice cream to be average but it was so much better! Will be back next time we are in Hawaii.
I was surprised of the great quality and flavor of the drinks; prices are reasonable. The have a wide variety of smoothies, bowls and ice cream and also local coffee.Smoothies are made with real fruit and due the peculiar combination of fruits the flavor is very unique and tropical. All bowls look amazing; and presentable. Its small restaurant and does not have AC my best recommendation is to order, grab and GO!Like MY COMMENT PLZ!
Seriously fantastic smoothies & amazing frozen creations! You won’t regret coming here but be patient, this place isn’t a chain and they put a lot of heart into what they do so sometimes it’s a bit of a wait (totally worth it though!). You’ll want to come back again and again to try everything on their menu!
Love the ice cream and is always a favorite stop for me and my girlfriend after a long day at work or maybe just yo pick up some dessert.Long lines and open everyday until 430 pm.
The badass BBQ sandwich (without pineapple) was amazing. There were 9 of us and we sampled most of the smoothies and they were quite good.
My kids and wife loved Unicone soft serve ice cream (as did I) and staff was super friendly!
The ice creams are wonderful. Get the largest size with the pineapple, you wont regret it
So incredibly rude! Waited in line for over 40 minutes, only to be turned away at exactly 4:30 when it was closing time. We were literally waiting at the register to order for several minutes, being ignored by the employees. When the clock struck 4:30, the cashier finally acknowledged us to tell us she was closed. We live on the island, we treat others with aloha…so disappointing to see this business not practicing those same values.
Dirty place! Stood in line for 15-min. Got to the front counter and was super grossed out by the condition of the kitchen space. I walked out 😬 One of staff went on break for 10-min, came back, didn’t wash her hands, and went straight into touching and preparing raw food. No thanks!
What a fun place. The choices can be overwhelming, but no matter what you order, you cant go wrong! I ordered the Aloha Acai bowl in a pineapple. Get napkins & bring a friend to share (and a camera, for that matter). Soooo good. Didnt get a chance to try their unicorn ice cream but looked good - lady before me ordered it. Theres a small public parking lot just a few steps away on corner of Waianuenue Ave & Puueo.
Makanis has an extensive menu of smoothies and bowls and other unique, whimsical treats you wont find anywhere else. Our group had the Gorilla, Jungle Boogie and Strawberry Explosion bowls. All were really good, but the peanut butter on the Gorilla was the best peanut butter I have ever had. Yes, its expensive, but we just embraced it. Its a fun place with a cute story behind the name and business and it was packed when we were there. Staff were friendly and service was reasonably quick considering the crowds. When we told one of the employees our dogs name was Makani, he gave us a Magic Pineapple Shack sticker. Well go back next time were on the island so we can try some of the other choices on the menu.
I enjoyed the food, but, sometime between Jan 20th 2020 and today Feb 10 2020 they stopped letting customers uses their bathroom. Places that provide seating, should also allow you to use the toilet. Explaining that I really needed to change a tampon made no difference. At the very least they should have knowledge of where I could go. When pressed they said the bus station or the soccer fields, I didnt give me directions to those places Im just supposed to know? I dont think either I were within walking distance. I guess I should have called ahead to ask about a toilet.
So good! They were out of sandwiches nut the Aloha Acai bowl was delicious.
Great spot for a snack under the sun - ice cream, smoothies, sandwiches. Recommended to come give it a try!
The ube soft serve is incredible
Excellent place, huge and delicious acai, easy to share between two people, we tried the delicious hawaian heaven smoothie !!!
Wonderful ice cream with a bunch of creative options.
Have gone a few time over my vacation, I’m vegan and it’s easy to find things here. Açaí bowls are very good, frappes are more or so just ice (wouldn’t get again). Dragon fruit ice cream was good as well. My boyfriend enjoyed the non vegan stuff, he LOVED the unicorn burger
This place has the most amazing smoothie bowls I have ever experienced. I ordered the Godzilla and if you love peanut butter its the way to go. Im from Reno and our places have nothing on this place. This is a must stop if your in Hilo. Also the sandwiches and other sweet treats looks amazing. I cant wait to visit just the Hilo side so I can come here every day to try something new.
Great dessert place with very unique selections. If you are in Hilo, you should check it out!
One of the best smoothie bowls I’ve had! Nice large portion with enough topping for it all 😄👌👌
Great place for awesome unique deserts! One of the best on the island!
Amazing place, a must try when on the Hilo side of Hawaii! Probably the best acai bowls ( and also the dragon fruit one!) on the Hawaiian islands. And the size is almost good enough for two. The Unicone ice cream is an absolute must-have! Who knew Ube and dragon fruit can be such an amazing and refreshing combo!
Wonderful coffee, get it to go or wait at the door. Easy Drive up order: good smoothies, like the very fresh turkey cranberries sandwich and great service.
Long wait for sandwiches, but amazing smoothies. Very clean, friendly staff.
Delicious!! I know this place is famous for its bowls and smoothies, but we decided to get the sandwiches for lunch. We got the blta and the barbecue pork in lilokoi sauce. Both were made fresh to order with a side of home made chips. It was an amazing lunch and we were taken aback how big the sandwiches were. Also had the macnut coffee iced which was a great option for a flavored coffee. We would definitely return. They make efforts to recycle garbage. One way to further reduce waste is to peel off the sticker on the cups and reuse it! Fun way to get something and decreases the plastic going into the environment. Would recommend some compostable or reusable utensils to further decrease waste! we will gladly return again.
I tried a lot of drinks in Hilo, and I have not been impressed. But Makanis, your cheap iced coffee is all I ever need and I legit want everything on your menu. I buy a kona mocha and am happy every time, and I will get a smoothie soon. They look bright and fun and the theme of this place is very pop chic. I appreciate these details. Good job
The Acai bowl is as watery as the sea around Hilo. Not worth $16
