First of all, you have to understand the FOL sale is only twice a year. Advice, dont go Saturday its crazy. I had better selection going on any other day when they first open. Lines are shorter and new books have been put out so there are choices. Most range from $0.25-$2 with some higher for collectors items.
If you have any doubts about going to their yearly sales, DON’T! They are amazing! They have a wide variety of books for amazing prices! I just came from there, buying 37 books for $75! An amazing experience with friendly staff and nice crowds. Be warned, it gets full fast.
I love the book fair. I travel five hours from Hollywood to Gainesville to attend. I highly recommend it. I have not only gotten great books and cookbooks I also acquired a vintage mirror there. You must go.
Love the collection here, and getting so many books at such a price is like dream come true. You can take risk of picking new author and new genre at such prices. The atmosphere during book sale was amazing.
Everyone knocks themselves out to listen and help in anyway they can. I have had amazing attention and assistance on several occasions about problems I have had due to operator error. Terribly friendly and bright people who work to create a warm and supportive atmosphere!
Book sales are amazing...if you have some semblance of control with book buying. I dont. So I dont go to every sale or my house would only have books in it. Its a problem.
Best in the world, and Ive been to tons of book sales, nice volunteers, shoppers and books, love the experience.
They only sell books for 12 days every year. How am I supposed to know that? Please edit your hours so that people know that you dont sell books more than 3 days every quarter.Update: The day finally came, and I drove over an hour to Gainsville. The line of people wraps around two city blocks. There is no parking, so I parked on the grass in an empty lot. When we got inside, it was utter chaos. I had been originally told that most books would be $0.25. In actual fact, some books are a quarter, but most are NOT. What they had not told me at all was that some books are independently-priced. One book was $8.00.This wouldnt be bad, except for the utter chaos that is the feeding frenzy ... I mean the bookstore itself. There are books on a table, and books under a table. You cant look at the ones under the table, because youll be in the way of the constant stream of people going through the aisles. You cannot even actually look at the ones on the table long enough to make a decision about the book. Most people are just scooping up books into bags and boxes. If you were unfortunate enough to bring a box, you will be in everyones way, and probably jab a number of people with the box corners. Excuse me please and sorry are something I say when I hit someone with my body or any extension of it.But dont be surprised if no one bothers to say that after jostling you. You are more likely to be able to read a book jacket at a rock concert.I did purchase several books for $60, but some of them I will discard. For instance, I bought a book that I thought was about George Soros (someone I do not like) and the book is BY him. Luckily it was $0.25 so I did not pay too much for my error. But I expect when I finish reading all these books, I will end up throwing away several. The entire experience -- INCLUDING the build-up and anticipation of waiting for the sale for several months (about five) -- was not worth it. I would much rather be one of two people in an aisle with a book than one of one hundred.Dont feel sorry for these people. They do very well. While the books are being sold, volunteers are shoving more books onto the shelves to replace the ones sold. If everyone paid $10 that I saw, they made about $3,000 in just one hour.EDIT: I was notified that a business owner attempted to mitigate my review by saying that Saturday is the worst day. I should hope so!I stand by every word that I wrote. Charity, volunteers ... I get it! Promoting literacy -- I GET IT! But itts not a good place for real book fans is what I said, and its not.
