The espresso is ok, kind of one dimensional, but the paper cup could be a contributing factor. The cold brew is fantastic. Not sure what to think of beans. I have a bag sitting on my counter, no roasted on date, just a best by date (which is months out), I should have paid attention. Coffee is best a week after roasting, it loses flavor the longer it sits. Fingers crossed they roasted the beans last Thursday.Edit: the roaster got back to me so I increased it from 3 to 4 stars. Best by date is 90 days from roast date. My first attempt using their brand wasnt bad... Still need to dial in temp and grind size to get the bright notes I desire in a shot of espresso. Good chocolate hints and not over roasted. The team that works here is great, and the location is lovely. Definitely like their patio seating.
Second time visiting this coffee chain, first time at this location. Ordered inside and waited a bit (they may have missed me in queue, but were super friendly and attentive when they noticed). It was a sunny day, so not an unpleasant wait at least. This rose and cardamon oat milk latte is crazy good, but didn’t hit me like my first visit. Will certainly try again as this location is closer to Elevation Church Durham than Woodcroft.Free street parking right out front. Wasn’t busy this Sunday and I was able to park easily.visited 3/7/21
Very nice atmosphere, the staff are very friendly and coffee is imported and great. The price is fair when compared to other coffee shops. If you like a nice quiet environment with free wifi then Jo Van Gogh is the place.
Cold brew a bit too diluted for my taste but they are a pretty great joint
I have mixed reviews with this place. Lets start with the good. My iced latte was good, their roasted coffee is quite good (though also quite expensive to buy beans retail). My wifes chai latte was okay. The staff was super nice, considering there were only 2 of them and it was quite busy. They were upfront with setting expectations that they were backed up 15m on drink orders, and they were working their butts off.Usually when going to a coffee place, I like to get breakfast at the same time. Unfortunately, by mid-morning, they were out of most items. And it sounded like everything was pre-made instead of made to order. The food we did end up getting was just okay. This is where it fell short for me overall. So while JVG probably wont make it into my usual rotation of coffee/breakfast places, Id go back if I happen to want some coffee and one is nearby.
The location is great, the drinks are delicious and decently priced, and the staff is kind and very courteous. I love the variety of options too. The lavender syrup is my favorite!
Interesting Flavors! Awesome customer service!
Great coffee spot. Had a very nice iced latte on a hot day in Durham
Incredibly kind staff. They corrected an order mistake I made and were super friendly. Super tasty coffee, too. Recently tried their macadamia nut milk and it was delicious with coffee. 10/10
I get coffee pickup once a week from JVG—it has become a lovely Pandemic Times tradition to treat myself on a Saturday or Sunday morning to a tasty latte—and they never disappoint. The rose cardamom oat latte is my go-to, and their house made vanilla one is delicious as well. Also, they don’t have an exorbitant upcharge for non dairy milk (or as I like to call it, “the vegan tax”) which so many other places do! I really appreciate that.
I enjoyed my visit here! I consider myself somewhat of a coffee shop expert, and visit local and unique ones wherever I travel to! The menu selection is not necessarily unique, more your typical run of the mill mochas, iced coffee, coffee etc, but the iced coffee was smooth and delicious, and I bought a bag of beans to take home, and I do recommend their coffee! There was a small pastry selection. Overall, I would say the experience will exceed a Starbucks, and you will enjoy it, but it isnt the most unique or exceptional coffee shop I have visited. They do have an excellent selection of whole beans to buy!
Quick service and delicious coffee. The espresso is consistently good here, and they offer creative latte options I have not seen anywhere else, such as the rosemary latte.
My favorite coffee spot in Durham. Lovely baristas and a great covid safe setup (and a cozy interior when covid eventually eases) . Their rotating beans are always delicious. I cant leave without grabbing a bag or two!
Very nice smooth coffe
Okay tea but frustratingly rude service. The girl working the counter wouldn’t let me leave my laptop to charge in the shop in the open chargers for literally 15 minutes while I sat outside. She gave no legitimate reason for this.
Great coffee, nice vibe even for take out
Under renovation. Cannot sit inside
I enjoyed the local feel. Ordered an Americano and blueberry muffin. The espresso had a full bodied flavor. Yes I know it was watered down, but Im sentimental about the Americano. And I would recommend their espresso based on my coffee experience. Do you often find local coffee shops sell stale pastries? Their muffin was baked with golden brown crust and moist. I would definitely suggest stopping here to treat yourself.
Just order when you get there. Tried to schedule an order and arrived to find my coffee had been sitting on the table outside for 50 minutes. It being December, it was cold and gross. When I went in and started to mention my pickup order I was cut off and told go outside, it is on the table.Been here before without issue, but today was disappointing. I really didnt feel like fighting, so I tossed the coffee and left with the rest of my order.
Used to be my go-to when visiting Durham, but on Tuesday 10 Nov 2020 literally someone locked the door as I had my hand on the door @ 1:00 pm. I was really shocked that someone would lock a door on me while Im trying to open it; didnt even open the door to say Oh Im sorry--we have new hours & weve already closed. Unfortunately it seems my experience isnt unique to judge by another review below, complete w/smirk & eye-roll as well in my case; just unbelievably rude. Im so disappointed b/c I used to love Joe Van Gogh but this is inexcusable.
Workers were so rude and hateful about the the mask wearing to some of their customers.
My favorite coffee shop in Durham. They serve the same beans as my favorite coffee shop in Hillsborough, NC Cup Of Joe. The beans are locally roasted so are always fresh. On street parking makes this a great place to stop and grab a quick cup before work. Lots of seating makes this a great spot to meet friend for coffee and they also serve some fresh baked pastries. Lots of great local artist have their work on display and for sale.
The attitude here is pretty bad. I get that COVID is making things hard, I really do care, I just cant see being rude to customers during this time. They made my order wrong and were very bothered by having me ask for it to be remade after they tried to argue that it was fine as it was. I paid for a 20oz drink with an extra double shot added, and got a 16oz. How are you going to argue that the extra shots are in there when I paid almost $7 for a 20oz drink? Its my partners birthday and I thought a nice coffee was in order.Let me suggest that you change the attitude or the counter help to accommodate paying customers who meant no ill will, just wanted coffee. That breakfast burrito I got was burnt and bland, bland, bland. Not sure what advice there is here. Maybe just missed opportunities.I loved the location near the Co-Op, such a disappointment that this location is the next closest. The coffees today werent very good even when they were remade/mine was right the first time but not good.I was a barista for a long time, so you can save the eye roll and dismissive attitude, which you couldnt spare me this morning.Im sad to say that we might not be back if our next experience is similar to todays.
I went adventuring with my lil one. We stopped in on a chilly Friday morning, when school was cancelled. We got a big ole sugar cookie for him. I already had my coffee in hand, but the coffee smells when I walked in were heavenly. Ill definitely be back soon!
Good local coffee spot. Pretty hipster place. Not a lot of room to sit, but there is seating outside. When the weather is nice this is a great spot to sit and grab cup of coffee and get some work done. The people working here are great and will give you a warm welcome. They love to go into the details of the coffee if you have any questions. The coffee itself if pretty good. The regular coffee was strong and didnt have any after taste.
At one time this was a quirky, reputable establishment. Today it’s lost it’s way as a great place to enjoy a cup of coffee. It provided quality baked goods from local artisan bakeries, now it provides in house goods to be more profitable. (They still carry some, but they provide only their goods at some locations.Additionally, they went to a “punch card” system for frequent visitors over a computer system that easily kept track of purchases and allowed one to wait til they wished to use them. Leaving that system allowed them to unilaterally cancel the saved free drinks. I would think that was quite a coup (placing signs saying basically use or lose isn’t very customer friendly). financially to eliminate that potential expense. This isn’t your local coffee shop anymore. It’s a chain providing a product for profit. I will drive the extra distance to Bean Traders where the owners are interested in community and treating their customers fairly.
Joe Van Gogh is the ideal of a neighborhood coffee shop. There are no platoons of beige pant wearing uniformed servers rushing to complete your order. The people that you see behind the counter are just that - your neighbors. inside you will find delicious coffee, free books, posters from local bands and business cards from local gig seekers. if this environment isnt your style, there is a Starbucks inside the Harris teeter just down the street. Go there. if you are laid-back, inclusive, and just enjoy a really good cup of coffee, and you dont see a seat ...ask me and Ill move my stuff over so you can sit down.
Cool artwork, but they were out of a few things. The espresso I was served sat too long before it was put into my cup and it didnt taste good.
Staff is extremely nice and make perfect drinks! Its going to be my go-to for coffee in Durham for a long long time.
Coffee excellent. Staff friendly. Van Gogh breakfast sandwich delicious. Indoor and outdoor seating. Dog friendly - noticed several water bowls outside.
Music VERY LOUD. most people come here during the week to work, but today they had some kind of Mystic/Spa music in a extremely high volume. Baristas should think in their costumers and play a more neutral kind of playlist (and listen to their personal favorite music at their home). The place end up empty... I am sure people was waiting to get a massage instead of a coffee.
Amazingly delicious little coffee shop. There are a few seats inside (20 maybe) with some more outside. The staff is super friendly and very fast. The coffee is really really good. This place would be worth the trip. Best part? You can even buy their grounds to have JvG coffee at home!
So far I havent tasted a better cup of coffee anywhere. If you are truly a coffee connoisseur youll be the type of person who likes to pick out subtle hints of chocolate, blueberries, honey and more.
Great Coffee, great atmosphere, and great Baristas. I suggest you try it for yourself, you will enjoy it.
Quaint coffee house. Enjoyed the fact I could have freshly made herbal tea cold. Nice place to sit and enjoy a moment in life.
I go here almost every Sunday to get my coffee whole bean. Friendly staff, fast service, and AMAZING coffee.I’m very picky about how a cappuccino is supposed to be executed. They do it exactly right. The right pressure on the tamp, the right temperature of the water, they froth the milk correctly. It’s hard to get all this right but they manage to very consistently turn out a very excellent cappuccino. Keeps me coming back.
Nice place with great music and a cozy atmosphere. Always busy but never feels crowded. I would recommend over a chain coffee shop anytime.
Love the locally roasted coffee. Also appreciate the microlot from Peru supporting women coffee growers ... really great! Jacqueline is very helpful with all the beans as well as all the brewed yummy drinks for purchase!
A nice atmosphere and good service. The coffee is pretty good with lots of options to choose from. I would recommend this place.
Above average coffee and a great working atmosphere. Quiet, with ground level seating as well as elevated seating in front with large windows. Easily accessible power adapters throughout cafe. Free wifi. Large parking lot to left of cafe, shared by neighboring businesses. Street parking also available.
Good coffee and delicious pastries. They even have a little toaster oven so you can warm up your pastries.
Had a fantastic Americano here. Very smooth, not a strong caffiene flavor. Place is very clean and charming as well.
Pretty good coffee but I had to stand up to drink it. The sitting was all taken by students who were studying. 90% were not even drinking coffee. Three customers walked out while I standing there with my coffee. I will not be back.
Awesome atmosphere, not insane crowd. The staff are pretty cool. The chick with short blonde hair makes so damn good espresso. Plus helping out artists with hanging their artwork
Delicious coffee especially the nitro iced coffee. Only downside is that it can be tough to find a place to sit because it is so small and quite popular. Ample parking in a lot just a few doors down.
Great, affordable coffee. Location is a bit small, but it has a cool loft area that provides a bit of privacy while still keeping the feeling of being at a coffee shop. Plenty of power outlets.
Very good coffee. Good selection. The location is not ideal, but the service is solid and the products are excellent.
Expensive and weird vibes. I heard they put soy in their coffee.
Great place to grab a cup of Joe. Knowledgeable staff. I have only had the drip coffee but it is really good. $1.30 if you bring your own cup.
Very nice
Just got a small cup of coffee here but it was fine.
Coffee was good and customizable. Had a lavender latte that was pretty tasty. The chai I got wasnt very spiced but still tasted ok.
I tried it because a co-worker recommended this location but I did not like their coffee.
The WiFi did not work here. We asked the staff to check and to restart the router. He said the WiFi was fine and suggested we restart our devices (all ten of them). He also said the router was off-site and therefore couldn’t restart it. The router was literally visible if you walk down the hall. The coffee is fine.
The people who work here arent great.
Great espresso. Pretty tight on space though, every seat was taken by computer users.
Absolutely fabulous cappuccino! Nice and friendly (What a combo) staff!!Side by side seating like an European spot. ..Happy!
Amazing coffee. Can have pretty atrocious wait times, during which theres almost no display of any sense of urgency. I wouldnt care except sometimes the lines are 5+ people long, and in morning rush, people gotta get to work! Three stars for amazing coffee though.
Great place to work and have a good cup of coffee.
Great local shop. Although it was crowded the dynamic duo busted out all the orders super fast, and put awesomeness all over the coffee.
Cardamom rose latte- subtle sweetness complemented by the strong fall spice
Coffee (also by the pound), Wi-Fi, locopops, atmosphere, awesome staff... priceless. Twice a day.
Has amazing pastry. They are all made fresh everyday.
I love their cold brew. They get that cold brew should be made with a lighter roast, unlike Starbucks that uses their super dark french roast.
The best tasting coffee on the planet if you like suttle hints of chocolate, blueberries, lemon, vanilla and other distinct flavors and aromas.
My favorite lunch spot when working in Seattle! Why choose to get gouged at Starbucks for burnt coffee and food shipped from a neighboring state? Van Goghs coffee and espresso is fantastic, hand crafted, and their lunch menu is always fresh and homemade. (BTW, Great soups and Panini sandwiches)
I love this place! I been coming here ever since I was little with my dad and we loved it!
I love Joe Van Goghs coffee, especially the El Salvador brew. It was practically my life line during a short stay at UNC REX this year. They have a little location on the hospitals campus.
Rose cardamom syrup in my oatmilk latte was amazing!
Not a ton of room inside, but the coffee is good and the staff are friendly and helpful.
Fantastic place to work and get a cup of coffee (especially for Smath students).
My favorite triangle coffee shop hands down, wonderful staff and roast/process selection.
A little crowded but super cute and tasty coffee!
You can scoop your own beans and try lots of kinds of coffee! Make sure to get the pour over
Cold brew to go! Great place to sit and do work. Also, check out the art it is usually for sale.
Great atmosphere, but was served nitro cold brew that was flat and didnt have any nitrogen bubbles in it at all. Additionally, it was served over ice, when nitros are supposed to be served without. Taste of the coffee was good, but dont charge nitro prices for what essentially is a plain iced coffee.
Great coffee. Great ambiance. Welcoming staff.
Great coffee and atmosphere...only complaint is outside seating is predominantly in the sun. Makes for a blistering summer visit.
Wow fantastic experience thanks for staffsMyself and my friend enjoy with coffee
Definitely go to the one on Broad. They serve pastries from Guglhupf, which is a necessary addition to the coffee. Not all the branches serve Guglhupf pastries, and that is WRONG WRONG WRONG.
Good coffee. The space is ok. Not the best light in the back. Wish there was more out door space.
Too crowd to get a seat last time I visited. Coffee wasnt bad.
Really good coffee. Small and loud but that isnt something they can fix in current location.
Fun coffee shop, great cold brew. Reasonable prices
Locally roasted, artisanal coffee, always beautifully roasted and well-prepared. The best prices in town and engaging, fun-loving, skilled baristas. Worth a drive across town if necessary. Same for their Chapel Hill and Duke Campus stores.
Small coffee shop, great place to work. Some outdoor tables if you come with a pet!
Trumpian experience with thick headed barristas, mediocre coffee and and a cant do attitude.
Nice shop with a good vibe. 2nd best local roaster in Durham.
Best caramel latte in town! (they dont use Torani syrup!). The space itself gets pretty packed, so not as much of a hang out coffee shop as others. But the coffee is always good (and their cafe au lait is SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper than other coffee shops!)
Great latte and great house roasted coffee beans.
Jorge van Gogh coffee tastes so delicious and balanced to me. Yum!
Nice atmosphere and some of the best coffee in town
