There is something about yarn shops that make me giddy with joy. My brain drops out through the bottom of my shoes and I forget what Im holding in my hand. The friendly employee reminded me that all three hanks I selected were the same kind, just different colors. Silly me! They allowed me to ramble on about yarn, assisted me with my decision and collected my payment. No judgement. They were glad to help. I avoided the coffee cups, t-shirts and enamel pins for sale. The silk yarn was beautiful. The craft kits almost got me. And, psst, get this -- theyre child and dog-friendly! This place is wonderful!

This is a small, cute shop that has a little bit of most things knitting, sewing and embroidery related. That said, if you are a serious knitter (like I am) and are looking for something semi-specific (like I was), this may not fill the bill. I was disappointed in the small stock they had. I bought some cute pins and things, but no yarn. 😕

This is, by far, my favorite yarn shop in the SF Bay Area. Chase is a wonderful proprietor. She is incredibly inclusive, sells yarns and other crafty items that will fit all budget needs. During the shelter-in-place she has been very responsive in shipping out items quickly. I recommend checking out her website (and store when the shelter-in-place ends). :)

I love this magical place. I love to sew and the selection of fabric, though it is small, is nicely curated and can I talk about the patterns?! Great selection and since I make clothes for my Sister I really appreciate they carry size inclusive patterns. The employees are always super helpful and I always see a smile on their faces, so nice. I don’t knit or crochet but this place makes me want to try! Beautiful and special yarns I never see at other places. I do live out of town on the central coast but I make sure I come every time I am up visiting my family. I highly recommended the Black Squirell if you appreciate special things.

I’ve felt unwelcome at high end stores before and was almost anticipating that here, but that couldn’t have been further from my experience!!! Everyone in store was SO friendly and chatty, the class going on sounded nice and very accessible, and there was a wide range of notions that I felt like I could afford. I left with a skein of yarn and a small tool thinking about how much I want to come back.

Very limited selection for the size of the space. Only a handful of US yarns and very few CA made options. Sad since there are so many amazing growers and dyers in the bay area.

Hands down, my favorite yarn store. Chase, the owner, is kind, generous, always willing to help and go above and beyond. The yarn carried at The Black Squirrel is primarily indie dyed yarn, and the fabric selection is gorgeous. Best of all is the welcoming atmosphere of this little shop!

I live this store but the yarn and notions are definitely among the pricier varieties. Still its nice to support independent makers. The classes are good and the staff quite friendly and helpful when you need suggestions or advice.

What a treat to visit this wonderful shop. Always kind, knowledgable and welcoming and I love their supply of beautiful yarns. Im a serious yarn junkie and make the pilgrimage all the way from Santa Cruz to check out their wares. They also offer great classes if you need a jumpstart back into the knitting/crochet world. Thank you Black Squirrel for inspiring me to get creative over the years :)

Fantastic and friendly store with a great selection of indie yarn. The staff is knowledgeable, and the friendliest people you will ever meet. Plus, theyll let you wind yarn even if you didnt buy it from them. It means I always try to buy the notions I need from them as a thank you.

This place is hands down my favorite yarn store. It has an incredible selection of hand painted yarns by companies I havent seen anywhere else, the staff is super friendly and helpful and the space itself is beautiful- giant windows with lots of natural light and theres always an interesting trunk show going on. There are also some really nice fabrics, sewing patterns and needle point kits as well. It is definitely worth a special trip if you are visiting the area from out of town.

Best yarn shop I have ever been to, hands down, no contest. Chase, the owner, is a gem. She carefully curates and displays everything she sells. The shop is always a joy to visit. Truly, if you are in Berkeley and you love yarn, crafts, people, justice, freedom, making, decency, creativity, and community, you owe it to yourself to visit this shop.

Great little shop. Lots of very nice yarns of all kinds, tons of useful and cute little Knicks knacks and some very cool coffee cups that I will be back for. Lady at the counter was super sweet and helpful. I will definitely be going back again and again. I used to knit but this store brings back the joy and whimsy is knitting, which is hard to get from the big box stores. I highly recommend you come in whether you are ew to knitting or a seasoned pro.

I Drove all the way from San Francisco to purchase a particular brand of knitting needles the net advertised the store as carrying, only to find a sign on the door which read Be back in 30 minutes. It would have been nice if the owner would have stated the time she left. I waited. About 45 minutes later, I discovered she had returned. Unfortunately, she did not have the needles I wanted. A whole day wasted. Under no circumstances will I go to the Black Squirrel again. By the way I saw no one else trying to shop there.
