Very small Safeway nestled into the U-District area. Its a good stop for getting easy-to-source groceries, but if youre looking for something slightly more unique or want more variety, look elsewhere - the selection is small because the building is small. Also the prices are a bit higher than others Ive been too.Since it is in the University area, expect this place to always be packed with students shopping for their dorm supplies etc. There are also sometimes transients and panhandlers that camp outside so beware, especially during the later hours.
Considering the area that its in, which could be really nice if not for all the homeless and the drug addicts sleeping outside and begging outside of the building and that it is not a super sized Safeway, I have always found all my needs met there. The only thing that could be improved is being able to locate the shopping carts which I have yet to find in all of my trips there.
This place is good because you can people watch and get groceries at the same time- so many characters. Dance with the homeless man outside the front door!! Buy him a beer!! Try not to get mugged in the parking lot! Oh, the humanity!
There was barely anything left. All remaining product was placed at the front of the store. I asked for energy drinks and was informed that they had none left, that they were closing permanently tomorrow at 11am. RIP Safeway
I went in the morning, trying to beat the homeless rush. I couldnt find a cart so I asked the gentleman working there who was in the deli where the carts were and he said theyre over there so I went over there and they definitely werent there and I went back to him and he said well how would I know where the carts are I work in the deli! Store needs upgrading in Customer Service as they are all so used to being rude to the down troden that it is there normal response now.
The self checkout is a pain in the butt. It constantly makes you have to ask for assistance and you cant remove items to place in your cart or bags so you dont have room to add more groceries. I definitely prefer Walmart to this store as I am from out of town
Used to love this location- google shows it as still open but it is fully closed down! Sign on doors say join us in 2022!- it is being redeveloped.
This store is closing November 21,2020 unfortunately. The staff, employees, and management are kind and fast. There is a lot of Seattle nfl and mbl clothes/gear for sale. All is 75%off, I bought a jacket $59.99 sold to me for $15. And $24.99 shirt for $6.50.
I was in town with family over the Labor Day weekend to tour the college and area with our high school senior. We could not find any fresh seafood in the store. While standing in line, one of the employees walked a customer in front of us while standing in line and walked off. 6 apart right? Thought that was rather rude... Didnt realize there was a Trader Joes around the corner.
So many homeless people hitting you up for money out front. I can see how it would intimidate some people. Safeway should do a better job ensuring its customers are not overly harassed.
Super super busy store but friendly staff no matter what.
Its a small store, little short on checkers. But Jay is great always happy upbeat and willing to help thanks J.
Well organized to follow social distancing protocols. great staff
As with any other place in u district be ready for tons of college kids but store was pretty good and clean
No carts available, and out of stocks are out of control here. Definitely a lot of improvements need to be made.
Smaller sizes store but has Reasonable selection and moderate free parking lot.Unfortunately there are a number of people milling around outside the store and parking lot that I felt uncomfortable
Sadly, this location is preparing to close for 2 YEARS for renovation... I look forward to giving it 5 🌟 upon their reopening! 🙂
This is a smaller grocery store with a good variety. Its great for UW students.
This safeway needs some curb appeal. I just moved to the city and I was trying to figure out were the entrance was. Its facing west, which is also the side of Safeway were loitering isnt being dealt with. But once you get inside shopping is rather straight forward, though good luck getting a cart due to most of them missing but the shopping experience is rather typical, you have the option for self checkout or going with a cashier. The cashiers arent the friendliest but they are not rude which is a plus.
Quick walk if you live close. Store is tiny and always packed with customers, mostly college students. Lot of homeless people outside constantly. Overall friendly staff.
I come here for fast grocery. They have the basics and more. Vegetables corner is perfect. Other sections are good. The deli needs to be improved. I like the self cashier.
Shop here if you enjoy fearing for your safety.
I found sugar free popsicles, third store i visited.
Great place to shop and get the best deals from anywhere around the U-District! They have extra security inside the store which is awesome. Good customer service which is also a plus. But they really need to take care of the homeless population that hangs around the store outside.
Dont know what other safeway stores look like, but do not want to go to this one ever again...
Not the safest and cleanest place to shop at, but they got quite a variety for weekly groceries, at a reasonable price. I go there during the day. Avoid the beggars at the door, or homeless gangs. I know they sound scary, but once you get inside, you will be okay. The membership card is quite useful, as in I saved a whole lot of money, and the sign up is free. Highly recommend this place if you are a student like me, and is on a budget.
This Safeway is so notoriously bad that is locally known as Unsafeway. Thats right.*UNSAFEWAY.*
This used to be a really good store. I knew almost everyone and almost everyone knew me that worked there. Much of that had changed, especially after the edict mandating the masks.See, I have a legitamate medical condition where I shouldnt be wearing them. I usually wear one anyway since the manager has specifically asked me to. However, I must time my stay and keep notice of my breathing. The cashier requested me to step back from a customer and I have dealt with the stress of COVID-19 just as much ss anyone else, probably more because, although I tend to follow the rest of the protocols, I dont tend to wear a mask for obvious reasons and therefore catch a lot of flak for it. I immediately caught myself, apologized, and deescalated the customer behind me that was essentially taking that as a call to a charge so to speak. Then we got into a conversion about the COVID situation and the cashier did not like it views that we have researched (I dont claim to be an expert so my views change with the information and wisdom given) and she didnt like the conversion that we were having that in no way shape or firm had anything to do with her or the customer in front of us so she refused to serve me. At that point I had her call the manager. When she instructed me to step out of line I had her call the manager again which she did again, so I guess she faked it before? When the manager got there, she had her witness and I had mine. At that point I couldnt breathe. The whole mask thing. So, I lifted it from my face (still covering it) for a split second to catch my breath because not only had I had it on too long but now I was getting upset which is making me breathe harder. Now the manager is upset at me for taking the mask off (actually barely lifting) literally for a split second and if this any part of this scenario happens again Ill be criminally trespassed. So, lessons learned. The cashiers can pick and choose who they serve and it doesnt matter if we literally pass out in the middle of their store as long as we have a mask on and literally never take it off even if we are literally about to pass out. Is this the new normal? It may take a bit, but, I still probably find alternatives to my neighborhood Safeway. Lots of people blame the homeless, which I will admit sometimes they have a point. However, I think I have demonstrated that recently there is something Diametrically screwed up that has happened to that store in recent days.
Convenient, fair prices, open late. Pretty good for a Universitys grocery store. However, there are constantly homeless people outside of the store always asking for something. It makes going to the store quite the experience.
Theres never been a fire at the store when I effeminate smiling but the fire department is always ALWAYS ALWAYS parked in front of the Amazon locker and Redbox and getting paid by the hour to shop
Safeway is the best. They always have what I need
The shopping floor is not clean. Shopping environment is pretty crowded. Employees are basically nice and friendly. Check out line is long and check out speed is slow. Credit cards accepted. 90 minutes free parking lot available. University of Washington and many dinning & shopping options are nearby.
Rip Safeway, you were dear to the hearts of so many students. Pouring one out for ya tonight.
Good deli well stocked good location
I would come here to pick up food and foodstuff items while at the University of Washington. The store provided a wide range of items, but was not always clean and some of the items (particularly the fruits and veggies) were dated and stale. Staff were for the most part kind, but occasionally you would run into cranky ones.
The Hostel is Close to Campus and going to Town is so Easy
Store is closing Nov. 21. Shelfs are bare.
For stars because theres really nothing wrong with the store, its just pretty small.. but its in a perfect convenient location. Theres also enough self scan registers so you can get in and out quickly
This Safeway is right in the middle of the University district. unfortunately theres a lot of homeless people around here so its part of life I guess. The staff are very friendly and very helpful. its not the best stocked store but they usually have the Staples and Safeway values so it is certainly a convenient place to shop.
Reasonable prices....Awesome service!
Standard Safeway experience. Store aisles are a little tight in order to for all the selection into the small footprint (which is common with most grocery stores in Seattle). Other than that, no complaints.
Safeway is always the best grocery store hands down
Small Safeway with compressed selection. Still has full deli, a lot of bakery options, and some liquor.
Local U District grocery store...quite a mix of customers...small store with cramped aisles...BUT!!...its a great place to shop...the staff has been fairly consistent with the same recognizable faces for many years and Jai is a hoot and a help...thanksJ$
Great store for college students. Convenient and helpful. Serves ALL the needs of young adults if you see what Im saying
Great staff. Very helpful and friendly. College kids shop inside and homeless hang right outside the door.
I know no longer live in the U District, and havent for over a decade. But when I go grocery shopping, Safeway on Roosevelt Way NE is my first choice. They have the best selection, good prices, and the friendliest staff of any grocery store in Seattle.
Just when I thought Sketchways deli got an upgrade. Dude serves me up two burnt, inedible pieces of chicken. I watched the dude pick out the worst pieces to serve me even though I am a regular to the deli and am always polite.
The staff are super friendly and even though its a bit of a sketchy neighborhood, I felt safe.
Been coming here for 3 years and no problem. Until, today. I must have been confused with somebody else, right??The asian lady at the deli treated me like a shoplifter. And then, the situation escalated as the self checkout guy came to the rescue. He did not really help... And instead mentioned how gay he thought I looked as I was leaving the building.
Right now theyre being remodeled and theyll have apartments about 11:00 but itll be in the same location.
I love this store there deli has good food and has all ways been a fav of mine since dinosaurs 🍪 and Smurf cereal
Was having a stressful day today running around trying to get errands done after work and had such a great experience at the checkout with my cashier Skye. Skye was extremely pleasant and efficient and truly turned my day around. Excellent service - will absolutely be back.
The store is ok, they should have a fresh meat and seafood counter. There are never any small baskets to use, lots of homeless hanging around, they need more security. The people that work at the store are very kind and helpful.
Good for a quick pick up of few items. The selection isnt as good as the 45th St location. Theyve worked well to keep loiters out of the entrance.
Going out of business!! Reopen in 2022.
This is a smaller store. I think that there is less items in the store personally. The employees in the store are very attentive and extremely helpful. Two qualities that I love for employees to have. Whenever I am in the U district I always stop at this Safeway.
Small and always crowded but good for the UW students who live around. You can find what ever you need.
Employees are very nice and helpful. The location is unfortunate, but its what youd expect from the area. Good prices, and offers a decent selection for a fairly smaller Safeway compared to what Im used to in other locations.
Poor selection of just about everything.A lot vagrants hanging about. Oddly higher priced items, such as Rolos and Vitamin water,.
Good to go stop for most of items.Do register online with the Safeway club card if you have one which you use. When youve registered with the card, youd start getting pretty good deals based on your shopping patterns for the items it thinks are relevant to you along with other recommendations. Sometimes it has offers like $x off on purchase of $y etc.
Right next to bus lines right near lots of great U district shops Safeway is a wonderful store to have near you to get what you need
Run down entrance and a relatively small selection for Safeway, but the best prices in U-District (with Safeway card). Its going to be demolished soon, and I hope Safeway finds a new location in U-District, otherwise it will be a lot more expensive to live here.
Smaller than others, but very helpful staffs
This is the worst Safeway in town. The manager must be the cheapest person alive. There are only ever 2 checkers open and a few barely functioning self checkouts. With this location being so busy all the time I really dont understand why they cannot hire a few more people to be able to open all the checkout lines when it is busy in the evenings. Oh, and now theres another high rise apartment building going up right next door... so even longer waits and more crowded store is inevitable.
STORE HAS THE LONGEST LINES IVE EVER EXPERIENCED. THAT IS THE ONLY REASON I DROPPED IT FROM 4 STARS. STILL - THERE ARE 5 SELF-CHECKOUT STATIONS TO HELP EASE THE CONGESTION & THE STORE REMAINS CLEAN, COURTEOUS, AND HAS MANY DISCOUNTED ITEMS. I CONTINUE TO SHOP THERE. JUST LEARN WHEN TO GO IN ORDER TO AVOID THOSE LONG LINES.
This place is super sketch, I would think twice before walking here at night with the crowd who frequents their parking lot. Super strict parking rules and Ive had to contest a ticket here for genuine shopping before. Selection of products is small and is mostly targeted towards college kids, which makes sense, but dont expect high quality ingredients. Good if you need some cheap beer or alcohol mixers, but otherwise its not great.
The employees are nice. They have this store set up to pander to the University students. Basically an overstocked convenience store.
Good place to shop. Will have a couple homeless people panhandling in front of the store, but theyre usually nice folks in the crunch of Seattles University District increasing skyrocketing living costs. The store carries everything you need. Has good produce, meats, deli, liquor, etc. Staff is great long term locals, who greet you by name...
The store manager here is very patient, and he makes the rounds on a regular basis to keep things going smoothly. I go here for cheap canned food, bread, pasta, toiletries, etc. However, if youre looking for a bulk foods section, try PCC in Fremont instead.
Unfortunately I try to avoid this place due to the overwhelming homeless presence. Sadly I do not feel safe walking here alone anymore. Was verbally assaulted a couple of times
Not my favorite Safeway -- lacks many items; small store.
Parking available. Small grocery store but has plenty of fresh fruit and veg. Very pleasant staff. Theres a hot food section.
The Shanghai meal deal is awesome
Its a Safeway just know that there are a lot of homeless there holding signs at the door for money.
Wish it was a bigger safeway but fine for quick trips for normal stuff. Line for checkout is sometimes ridiculous. Waited 10 minutes before. Just be careful going during peak hours.
Prices way too high, poor selection. But- staff and cashier peeps were extremely helpful and friendly! 5 stars for them!!
I Love the Safeway family. This is a great store in the U district area. Im hoping in the future there updating will include a coffee shop.
Decent little store, very small but has a solid selection. Neighborhood is mostly students so the store caters to them. No matter what though, as is pretty consistent for all Safeways, even with just one or two items youre going to wait about 10-15min in line to check out.
A great store with exceptional staff. Good shop to get all the regular food. Check the date while checking the items you are looking for.
Staff is nice, but the place is almost always so busy with not enough lines open. Takes a while to ring up groceries once youre ready to do so. Also doesnt carry quite a few items youd expect the place to.
Good value, just average selection (especially when it comes to meat/fish), but the biggest issue is the general attitude of employees. They just always seem like theyre having a crappy day and I dont know why. And definitely always expect one or two homeless men to hit you up for a couple bucks upon entering and exiting.
Kind of a gross place overall. Always feels dirty and over crowded, not that great a selection of food... I tend to avoid shopping here if possible. Trader Joe’s is right down the street so Id advise you just go there.
Unless its an awful Safeway, Ill always give it five stars since they carry nearly everything I need, and their prices are very good. I still have to go to QFC for certain things, but Safeway really is nearly perfect.
Well stocked but a bit small. Serves the students of UW so a good selection of easy to prepare meals.
This is one of the oldies. Small. 8 isles Max . Max is my dog too. Its got all youll need just really packed in.
Shopped at this place for four years while I went to college. Has great sales and friendly staff. Can get overrun by college students though. They are good about keeping well stocked even with the high usage.
Prior to moving to Seattle, I never shopped at Safeway because I had bought into not supporting ‘corporate grocery chains’. After starting school at UW, I had to review that political position because he area around the university did not have any ‘mom & pop’ grocery store. I didn’t know anything about Safeway as a corporation, but I did not I needed food and this store was close. After shopping there, I realized avoiding ‘corporate grocery chains’ was dumb.Very good store with a great selection and great employees..
Great spot, very convenient, but highly recommend you dont shop here late at night on a weekday, especially if you are in a hurry, since its crammed with students making their late night grocery runs. Stick to early morning or mid-afternoon.
This is a real hit or miss location. Besides never finding any help when you need it, the lines are pretty much out the door with only 2-3 out of 6 registers open at a time. This is the store is definitely a last resort. 4 stars because at least the items I want are in stock. Sometimes 😐
Slection is limited, and the store is often out of items. Yet for such a small grocery store with such high volume, it has to be said that the staff do a fine job, and -- dealing with an almost exhaustingly high volume -- admirably maintain a gracious and professional attitude. Excellent produce section; decent selection of spices, good dairy section. Deli is of good quality, but overpriced.Overall, a very good grocery store
Its small but convenient. They dont carry everything that other safeways do but if your looking for some groceries you can get it without an issue. They also have a self-checkout option which is nice but they close it when it gets late.
Tiny selection, messy messy MESSY store, damaged baked goods, things missing prices, no real bakery, cramped front end of the store. Always out of stock in the items I need. Quick service and self checkouts are nice though.
I LOVE Sketchway. The hams are discounted, the floors are grimy, assistance is needed at the liquor cabinet...If you dont like it, be a yuppie and go to QFC.The only way to have a bad time here is if some cuck tries to start two lines for the self-checkout. THERES ONLY ONE LINE FOR THE SELF-CHECKOUT BRUH.
Youll get almost all your groceries here. Fresh fruits and veggies too. Much cheaper than Trader Joes.
Should be called Unsafeway. Nuff said.
I always feel as if im on my own here.
As Safeways go, this store is on the medium sized and caters mostly to college students living nearby. As a result, the store gets busy in the evening hours after 8 p.m. all the way till close. This is especially true on Fridays and Saturdays when the lines can grow to be upwards of 20 people deep.
They do not do a good job keeping the store clean. I just found a bug inside my salad and the manager does not know what to do with it... Whos going to educate the manager if hes the one in charge not knowing what to do? There should really be another grocery store nearby in order to close this Safeway
