A great surprise! Didnt expect to find such a wide range of high quality items at very reasonable prices.I will be back regularly!
My first time ever visiting this store was delightful and educational. I went there to buy gifts for a relative. One purchase did not come with a box, so the woman behind the counter (perhaps the owner?) went and searched for one. She even gift wrapped the item for me and included a pretty bow! She also gave me a brief oral history about the store (the first store opened in San Francisco over 100 years ago) and even showed me how to fold an origami samurai helmet. I will definitely be back for future purchases.
I love this place! Just brought very small things but the owner and shop keeper had packed them in an amazingly elegant way with origami for me! I learned that in Kyoto, stores pack carefully to show how much they appreciate the recipient. I think here they do the same! It is not only a 100 years old store but is piece of Japanese spirit in the Bay Area -- because the owners!
Take a stroll in the original San Jose Japantown from the 60s here. The store retained the authentic feeling of the Japanese immigrants living in the area with supplies from the mother land. You can find things from martial arts items to kimono accessories. Origami folding papers to traditional dining plates. I can easily spend hours in here.
Wonderful friendly staff that make you feel like a neighbor. They have an amazing selection of merchandise that I have often relied on for thoughtful gifts. I was very sorry to leave this store behind when I had to move away. I hope to return to visit and shop again.
The gentleman working when we came in was so helpful and patient. This is a huge store with a balance of handmade trinkets to breathtaking tea sets. I highly suggest popping in and checking out their unique stock. I couldnt leave without some adorable chop sticks and beautiful origami paper!
Great friendly people there. Good selection. Nice to see Arlene is still there.
Visited this place during the Obon Festival. Interesting gift shop.
Very #kind and #friendly shop owners which will help you with everything you need. You can find there many things to buy - food, clothes, books, etc.I personally like their very old, but working, cash register 🙂.
Got my Gi from here. The shop keeper was very friendly and helped me to choose the right Gi. Also gave useful tips on how to maintain it.
Good selection of Japanese goods. Owner is nice and happy to talk to you about her stores history, as well as that of Japan Town.
Very handy store and the older gentleman who works there looooooves to talk about ... history, and well, everything. They have real futons here, really neat washcloths, martial-arts stuff, new and used books on Japanese culture in general, the most mind-blowing origami things made by a local, etc etc ETC. Whether you need a pair of sandals, a hapi coat or a daruma, this place has got it.It reminds me of old Kayas in Punaluu on Oahu in the 70s when I was a kid, where my mom bought tea cups marked Made In Occupied Japan and there was everything, just everything, jammed into that little store.
When you grow up Japanese American and have traveled to Japan, you just have to love stores like this. In fact, the entire San Jose Japantown was a fascinating society of Japanese people who are probably into 4th and 5th Generations, but still embracing and carrying on Japanese life and tradition. This store sold your standard Asian Bruce Lee themed stuff. Kung Fu shoes and dragon robes were everywhere. However, when the layers were peeled back, a lot of rare pieces were seen. traditional pottery, tea sets, wood carvings and drapes. Kimonos were hidden in the corner. Lacquered bowls and chopsticks. Traditional wood made toys. Probably was my favorite stop in Japan Town of San Jose. I would insist that anyone visiting the area stop into this store and soak in the American Japanese Generational culture that lives here.
A lot of fun browsing Japanese crafts
