I’ve been coming to mox for a few months now and I’m never tired, board games war-hammer paint and painting accessories places to play games reading cards and a restaurant (which is excellent). Trading cards are available all pricing in those store are exceptional, the staff is amazing and I’ll forever come here as long as I live in Portland. It’s actually my favorite place to destress
Mox Boarding House is an upscale bar/gaming hall with group and private rooms. Bring a jacket, because if it isn’t full, it can be chilly. Food: the food is tasty, but as of this writing, many items were “sold out” by 7pm. So it may make sense to get your orders in early! Other than that, the staff is knowledgeable and warm. This is my husband’s new “happy place”
Very open layout. Its option of hobbies seemed limitless. Honestly the I loved the staff working on 10/30/2021. Friendly and kindly reminds those to wear mask appropriately. Highly recommend this location for casual play of any board game.
I rented out the Reading room for a game for a bachelorette party and was not disappointed. Great room, good food, wonderful people to help us with anything we needed, and a great selection of drinks. Lots of options for the room and for a decent price for the area. Everyone found something for their individual nerd collections in their well stocked store as well. Even some of their Warhammer models were cheaper that GW last had them so we had to snag those. All around, a great place for nerds to get away.
As a game store, the selection is good, not great. Special orders are an option and they do stock the hot games, but classics are. That would be an issue if they were just a game store.Where they excel is the experience of playing there.I dont expect people not interested in gaming to check out this place, but they are missing out on a great gastro pub! The food and drinks are decent and the location is beautiful. The game tables and private rooms are fantastic. If you dont have space for your gaming group, this is a great option.
Great shop!Heard about Mox from friends who visit Seattle Mox quite often and can say 1000% was not disappointed. Havent been to a good game store in a long time and this was spot on. Tons of game options, plenty of models, materials to finish them, shiny math rocks that click clack (ranging from the basic coloured to semi precious gem stones and varied metal options) and so many shelves of excellent books.Staff on shift that afternoon were so cool! We enjoyed chatting with them; learning about the store and what they offer but also the area itself once we mentioned that we were going to be moving to the area and were curious what the local scene was like. They had vast cosmic knowledge and were willing to share it with us!Looking forward to being able to go over on the weekends and participate in gaming again as its been a bit since weve had a good spot to do so.
Our family LOVES everything about Mox Boarding House! Every person on their staff is friendly, fun and super helpful in picking games that fit your preferences or needs. The games are super well organized based style (family, party, modern, European, card, etc) which I found to be inviting and not overwhelming. Their game lending library also allows you to test a game and if you enjoy how it plays if youre unsure. Weve become repeat customers (when dine- in option was open) to go spend a few hours playing & eating as a fun evening as a family, with neighbors (socially distanced play), and with our kids meeting a friend for in person socially distanced connect time. TIP: you can get 10% off any game purchase when you Eat & Play. You can also purchase Magic: the Gathering cards here too. Be sure to check out their blog on the website for current savings and valuable info! We appreciate Mox and enjoy sharing this incredible place that offers a huge selection of games, a game library, and a full restaurant! Oh, and also be sure to check out their cool bathroom and look for unique in house art below the cashier and along the hallway to the restroom!!! Happy gaming :)
Mox has worked very hard to create a wonderfully inclusive environment! Their gender inclusive bathroom is a remarkable experience. They also have a wide variety of board games, mini figs, dice, and card game accessories. Their bar/restaurant/play area is well lit so youre not straining to read while playing games, but still provides a cozy ambience. Their beer and cocktail selection is wide and nicely varied with some imaginatively delicious cocktails. Their food menu is also very impressive, but if youre looking for fatty, traditional bar food youll have to look somewhere else. Overall a fantastic experience and Ill be coming back over and over and over again!
It was incredibly lovely its so nice to be able to play a board game and have a meal I dont know why there arent places in all cities that do this. They have a super wide variety of board games ranging from intermediate to baby to party to advanced. They also have a storefront where you could purchase games and other game related knick knacks. The dining area honestly felt upscale and their bathroom was extremely Fancy with closed closet doors it was so awesome. They had a wide variety of alcohol and a solid variety of cocktails I will say that they its the bar is not fully stocked but I feel this election will please anybody. The food was very good I highly recommend getting the wings above all else Id say we were my favorite part of the meal. In terms of board games one recommendation I have is look up a YouTube video of whatever game youre playing and watch the beginnings guide we did this for ticket to Ride and it made the gaming process how much smoother. In terms of board games I cant speak to their whole collection but take it to ride was a great beginner board game that me and my friends had a ton of fun playing. I would recommend it even to people who are a little intimidated by board games or usually only playing stuff like cards against humanity or other party games. I was later told when we had already sit down that you can get a discount for the board game you purchased in the storefront if you mentioned youre also going to be sitting down to dine-in.
We stumbled upon this place when trying to find a board game bar and its fantastic! Great selection of games. We loved the ambience, music, and decor. The tap list and food was great. We also ended up buying a couple games so we highly recommend going!
Mox is rolling crits left and right here. The entry way is a game store, through and through. Amazing selection and friendly, knowledgeable staff (Pretty decent 40k area as well). The layout, design and appearance is clean, warm and inviting albeit a but smaller than I am accustomed to. That being said, this place levels up in the back. In true min/max fashion, the fully stocked bar and full restaurant are top tier. The food is amazing (I recommend the Mac and Cheese, add bacon) and the drink selection promises to quench the thirst of any wary adventuring party. Here comes the best part; You can borrow games from the store library and play them at your table. To further the quality of the experience, the wait staff know how to play most of these games and offer assistance as needed. I cannot recommend this place enough. Go and enjoy.Oh, they also have tournament areas (Like any game store) that I didnt explore but saw several different games going. 10/10, would go again.
This place is amazing! Great energy and wonderful vibe. Love the selection of games for both purchase and to check out and play. Lots of events and very hip place to hang out. The one gripe is unfortunately the food. Its a neat idea in theory but our group was all pretty underwhelmed by our food. And its expensive to boot. Maybe eat before hand and just drink there while playing games. All and all great experience.
This place is a new favorite! Fantastic food and drinks, great atmosphere, friendly staff, and one of the best selections of games to purchase that Ive seen around Portland. The games to borrow section is a little smaller than I expected, but they made up for it by having a really solid set of games and helpful staff to recommend something your group will enjoy. Theres something for everyone!
Cant wait to go back and eat there. And maybe play something as well. Lots to look at.
Great atmosphere, friendly service, awesome decor and game selection and good drinks and appsBut, dont bother getting a meal here its fine just overpriced.
The store is extremely well laid out. The displays are great. Staff is knowledgeable and helpful. Not pushy at all. The dining area is fantastic. The chairs are comfortable and all the tables huge. Perfect for gaming. Everything is clean. They have a section set up with tables for miniatures and another room for CCGs. The food is better than anything else Ive ever seen at a game store. Its pricey but worth it if you spend a couple hours playing a game.
Great staff, really good selection of games, great gaming space, food is good. If you like boardgames, magic the gathering, or wargaming, this place is it.Also the only place in town that does 20% off GW MSRP.
Weve been in the game store many times already, and eaten in the restaurant twice.Game store has a great selection and wide variety of products. Fun to browse, the staff isnt pushy and they dont rush you.I did NOT expect an amazing dining experience inside a game store! I honestly thought itd be bar snacks and fried food, wow, was I ever wrong! Go here for the food, even if you arent into the games. We worked our way through most of the Cocktails, all really delicious. They have a large selection of taps to choose from as well. Also a coffee bar menu and plenty of non-alcoholic choices. We loved the Chorizo Queso Dip so much we ordered it again on our second visit. Same with the Tempura Wings. They were so crispy on the outside and succulent on the inside!Mushroom Bourguignon was a huge hit with my dining companion. Ive had a couple of their Burgers which were great, but I really fell in love with the Feta Garlic Fries! Whole Cloves of Roasted Garlic are mixed in along with the Feta.Great Affogato menu along with a few dessert selections.Service was exceptional! They dont rush you at all. Many tables were playing games while they ate. They have quite a large seating area.Of note, they do upcharge for sides ($1.00 for mustard) or substitutions ($1.00 for grilled onions instead of raw). Just to keep it in mind so you arent surprised when you see the check. Also of note for the Wine drinkers, their selection is a bit small - only 2 Tap options and 4 choices by the glass.
One of my favorite hangout spots in the neighborhood! So many fun games, and the restaurant has awesome drinks. Highly recommend the hummus plate.
I’ve been to a lot of board game stores across the country, and this is one of the best! They have a great selection from the latest games to older modern classics that you don’t see stocked elsewhere. In addition to the store being amazing, the restaurant blew me away. They have an excellent library of games to choose from while playing or you can bring your own. The food and cocktails are so good, I would visit regularly even if they didn’t have anything to do with board games. If I could give them 6/5 stars, I would
Absolutely a gem! So clean, such a cool vibe, a great game selection and delicious food. All the people who worked there were really knowledgeable about the games and super nice and attentive. It has rooms you could reserve for private events that looked amazing, I would definitely look into that for birthday parties, etc. And it might sound strange, but I loved the bathrooms! Not only were they beautiful and clean, but they were unisex and very private which was great.Good deals on game purchases if you eat there too. Overall really cool place.
Amazing place where you can go to eat, play, and explore board games.
Very cool place. It is a board game bar elevated to also be a restaurant with yum food from a variety of cuisines and very innovative drinks. The ambience is comfy and luxurious. It can get noisy as people play games around you.
Really good food, really good atmosphere. Had fun trying a new game while waiting on food. Highly recommend, you wont regret it.
They have all the great games and more! The food is great, the drinks are great! I cant wait to come back again and again.
This hobby store/restaurant/ bar, is well lit, large, filled with games, has good food and frequently runs events for all types of tabletop and card games.
I loved that place!!! The people are friendly, food and drinks are good! And the place is very nice! I loved!!! ❤️
Cool spot, friendly staff, but… not a huge fan of getting stared at & followed around for being the only brown person in the store. Do better.
Amazing atmosphere. Amazing food and drinks. And that bathroom is THE standard of gender neutral bathrooms. Amazing execution all around
Friendly staff, lots of neat games, havent tried the food, but thats a good reason to come back.
Great food and service at their restaurant. Love there game selection and pin collection.
What a fantastic idea for a business! you can pick from a wide variety of games and then take them to your table to play at no charge!we had a great time here, the service was good and so were the cocktails. the food was just meh, which is why I gave 4 stars, but I would still recommend this place for sure, and I would go back again in a heartbeat.
Mox seems like such an awesome place. My partner and I went there to stock up on D&D dice and supplies. Were newbies to D&D and the staff were all incredibly friendly and knowledgeable and helpful. The store is big with a great selection and an absolutely beautiful space. Will definitely be returning to stay and play with food and drinks.
Really cool spot with knowledgeable employees who were fun to chat with. If you are going to sit down and eat, be warned they do not allow outside drinks and will ask you to toss them. Still 100% worth the trip.
My family and I came here twice on our vacation this week. Great variety of games, helpful staff, nice space for big games and a solid menu.
Food and drinks were awesome and the wait staff was really helpful. Strong recommend to the restaurant.
Best food thats ever been connected to a game store. Awesome place all around
Game store area was filled with great employees, and a huge selection. Food was cheap in price and high quality. Couldnt recommend it more!
Phenomenal staff, well appointed store and delicious looking food. Unfortunately I didnt eat whilst there to comment on that but I will next time!!
Hands down the best experience Ive ever had. Amazing food, well stocked games with knowledgeable staff, gender inclusive atmosphere, SUPERB interior decoration and warm art-deco enviorment. Go there, play some games, spend a little money, and have a blast!
My husband and I have been here several times and love it! The staff are all very friendly and helpful. Weve gotten several recommendations for games to try out, and have always been very happy with the results!
Amazing place with wonderful atmosphere great game selection an a surprisingly elegant an delicious menu was more then ever expected and absolutely loved it can not wait to go back
Great food and drinks! One of my favorite places.
Large open layout, play space, full restaurant. I love it.
Mox’s boarding house has several qualities which make it my favorite board game restaurant: an expansive board game selection available for purchase, helpful and knowledgeable staff, an on-site restaurant which always has unique and delicious food, and a friendly restaurant staff who are great at their jobs. The restaurant has plenty of space for tabletop gaming groups and is a great place to grab a good meal even if you aren’t planning to play games. Highly recommend.
Food: very good but youre not there for the foodStaff: friendlySelection of buyable games: greatAtmosphere: perfect for gaming with friends, a romantic interest, or for a professional team building boardgame
Nice clean environment, friendly staff, great food, reasonable game selection. It was a very pleasant experience.
Super fun being able to cool off in the AC while playing a game & having a brew. Super neat pre-built Magic decks too!
This is the best game store Ive visited. Beautiful atmosphere, very fun and inviting, fair prices and a solid staff.
This place was so cool! You can sit at a table and rent games for free and play while you wait for your food! The food was also outstanding and the staff was awesome. Will be coming back ASAP.
Such a fun spot with great vibes! Many games to choose from and pretty good food.
Awesome shop premier play area good restaurant also
Delicious food, great service, fun atmosphere. Tons of games to choose from or play while dining with friends, 10/10 would recommend.
This is a great place to go and hang out, eat, and play some awesome games. I love the lending library, and the staff are always friendly and knowledgeable.
This place is great! Plenty of seating, friendly staff, food and drink options, and the staff help to curate your game night with suggestions. 🔥
Really nice, new, and clean interior. Good food, good drinks, and just a great place to play tabletop with friends.
They have alfagato! Great place to hang out and kill some time.
Nice selection of board games with an area designated for playing games.
Beer and magic cards. Validated parking
Awesome games, friendly staff, and their tables were full of awesome minis I wish I could have played a game there. Next time I am in Portland def gonna grab a drink.
AMAZING! The vibe was very cool, all the workers were so friendly, amd they had genuinely the BEST FRIES i have ever eaten. Absolutely coming here again.
Mox is awesome. Very cool place to grab food and hangout. Staff is super friendly and helpful and the food is great. Definitely check this place out, and if you get food there you get a discount on a new game.
By far the most upscale atmosphere for any TCG store. Food is a little pricy but its the real deal.
Great place to play games with an awesome selection of purchasable games. Great drinks and atmosphere. Everything is clean and I appreciate the non-gendered bathrooms. The music might be a tad too loud for a gaming venue and the food could be improved, especially the vegetarian options. The mac and cheese and pimento cheese sandwiches were both bland (couldnt tell there was any pimento and the cheddar needed to be sharper) and the queso (without chorizo) was one note and too spicy. Our one meat eater enjoyed their burger. The horchata rice pudding was good.
If you love board games, card games, tabletop games, shiny dice, or painting figurines this place, stop in. Bring your friends, bring your appetites, and play games together in this legendary tavern.
Looking to buy a board game, check mox out, looking to enjoy an amazing meal with friends and game, check MOX OUT! Great food, great beer and great games.
This is the best game bar Ive been to. 🤓 Nerdy cocktails with excellent outcomes, amazing food and the bar aesthetic is captured in an old timey vibe. Come here for the games and stay for the great dining experience!
Fantastic atmosphere and great drinks :)
Great! We were in one of the rental rooms, the Reading Room. Super nice, great for DND. We were served lunch in the room - great burger, amazing mac and cheese 🥰
This store is very well-organized, with fantastic products, staff, and an excellent Discord server. This is a great place to check out for games in Portland.
Super rad place, will absolutely be back
Summary: Decent, slightly overpriced, but pretty food, including vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options. Notably cool bathroom design. Events, and gaming rooms for rent. Friendly, knowledgeable staff, and good service. The prices of the food are definitely about 25% to 50% high, by Portland standards, but the overall experience is sufficiently bougie for it to feel reasonably okay. Also, though it feels odd to mention it, the bathroom is notably beautiful - excellent interior design, and gender-neutral! Cool! One disadvantage of the location is a lack of parking, when soccer games occur, so I might suggest to bus or rideshare, when those are happening. So, my first visit to Mox was when they were having a grand opening event, which was held I think weeks or maybe months after their actual, initial opening. That visit was, unfortunately, underwhelming. I was excited to try their food, as the photos in the reviews generally look beautiful (side note: bizarrely, this would-be free advertising is hidden / suppressed / relegated to just within the reviews by whoever, in my opinion, excessively controls their online presence / image, such as Google Maps, and un-tagging genuinely appealing images of current menu items on social media - I honestly pity the wait staff for the lost tips, lost restaurant sales, and probably even lost game store sales, by extension, that is surely directly resulting from this baffling decision, but I suppose its theirs, to make). On my second visit to Mox, I had the Chorizo Breakfast Burger with fries (pictured) which is what I had wanted to order, the first time. It was pretty good. Chorizo is often slightly dry, but between the egg, sauces and popper, the burger had a pleasant, medium-spicy flavor and plenty of moisture. The cream cheese squirted out the other end of the popper, when I bit into it, which was funny and memorable. I have been going there weekly for D&D, and will probably get it, again. My third visit, I played D&D, and had the elotes queso dip (not pictured), which was pretty, but again, just okay. Very mild, a bit soupy, and not very much corn (elotes) at all, when I had it. My friends, on a later date, appeared to have a more noticeable amount.Fourth visit, more D&D, and ordered the Cheddar Brie Mac and Cheese (vegetarian, pictured), which was okay - very mild, would be perfect for my mother (but, for me, next time, will add bacon or chorizo or both). Also got the Dijon Maple Brussels (vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, also pictured) which were, again, a tad overpriced, but surprisingly good. I dont always like dijon, but I do like brussel sprouts, garlic and maple, and they turned out to be solid. The service at Mox is actually really good. I have nothing bad to say about the employees. Attentive, prompt, arent overbearing, didnt guilt trip me, on my second visit, when I asked for a table (which is prime real estate in a game store / restaurant), instead of the bar. It can, unfortunately, be quite common in Portland, and in Nerdspaces / fandoms in general, to be elitist, exclusionary or gatekeep-y, but the Mox staff, thankfully, doesnt give off that vibe. Always nice to be around friendly, professional, inclusive people. The game store portion of Mox Boarding House has board games, miniatures, dice, CCGs, handbooks, etc. for sale, and has private game rooms available for reservation/rent. You can also eat and game at the (public) tables in the restaurant, if they are unoccupied and not reserved for an event. The tables are maybe slightly narrow for certain games and for D&D, but its not too bad, and they look nice. This is easily my longest Google review, largely because I am now a regular at this business (for weekly D&D) but slightly disappointed by a few specific aspects of it. I doubt anyone is still reading this novel, but if you are, feel free to check me out on[ Instagram: jonathan.grubb ]for more (almost exclusively small / local) greater-Portland-area foodventures!
Its a gamer bar that doesnt leave me depressed. Nice.
Great looking place, great vibes, great selection of games and singles… will be back!
What a gem of an establishment.I found this place on Google Maps, looking for a great place to eat for a date. I hadnt read any reviews, but saw the menu and noticed some enticing options, namely the blended burgers. A restaurant with board games you can play while eating... I had to give it a shot! While walking up to the entrance on the corner, I had to do a double take, as at first glance depending on the side youre coming from, youd just think it was a game shop and the restaurant entrance is elsewhere.Boldly charging through the fully stocked and expertly faced board game store teeming with cardboard entertainment, seeking the restaurant, I had to slow down a bit as these colorful and beautifully designed boxes acted almost like an art gallery as I made my way through to the back.At the board game desk in the store, they have a wall of shelves packed with games to play while you eat. The shop attendant recommended a reserved selection of games for 2 players, making it easy to sift through the seemingly endless options. We ended up choosing Codenames: Duet, a cooperative word association game that brought out the clandestine secret agent in me.As we moved through the hallway to the restaurant, game in hand, we met the host who let us know our table would be ready in a minute, as they were just cleaning one up.My date and I were commenting to each other how well presented, clean, and polished the restaurant was. The contemporary 1920s styling, with bare Edison bulbs lighting portions of the room with a sleek mini-bulb track mounted on the ceiling in the center confused and delighted my expectations. This place stood out against the cookie-cutter style of other places. With no ability to make reservations for this restaurant in sight (or site...), at 7 PM on Humpday, we were fortunate that there wasnt much of a wait. At the hosts lectern a QR code sign gave us access to the menu while we waited. Within a few minutes we were seated and ready for action. My date and I both ended up with the Tex-Mex Queso blended burger, as just reading the description made me start salivating. We were able to get a couple of quick games in before our food came out. Its surprising how fast it came while we filled our time with trying to associate words like Glacier and Walrus with one single hint word while getting them to avoid the word Blizzard as the other option. The flavor of the burger was great, but it was a little dry. Ive never had a blended burger before, so I cant say if thats how theyre supposed to be, but it wouldnt surprise me if they needed to be to hold together. That being said, the spice level was perfect, and it was nice and flavorful. Ill have to try the Mox Classic or the Buffalo Hot Chicken next time to compare.I have 4 syllables to describe the fries; IN-CRE-DI-BLE. I would eat those little guys for the rest of my life if I could. Definitely not for anyone who hates really delicious things. We continued to play as we enjoyed our meal. I can only imagine they have to constantly replace these board games with pieces getting food bits on them or water spilled. Our game had none of that, but a couple of drops of water made it onto a token or two. After dinner, we shared a Pineapple Rum Affogato. I cant think of a more fitting term than shared, because my date took one sample and just couldnt do it. It may have just been the food beforehand, or the ice cream mixed with the pineapple rum, but the rum completely overpowered any other flavors, likely because of the proof of the alcohol. A few tastes in and I was muddling the ice cream into the rum to make it more palatable. This was my first time having a non-coffee affogato, but next time Ill likely stick with some of their weaker proof offerings like Amaretto, Maraschino, or Raspberry Liqueur.Id safely say if you are going on a date, or eating out with a group of friends, this place has to be one of the best in Portland. Its certainly near the top of my list. 10/10 would do again.
An incredible experience! We visited Moxs Boarding house with our 4 & 7 year old daughters and had a blast. The food was delicious and the server was kind, attentive, and encouraging. The staff in the game room were so helpful choosing games that the whole family could play. They have a diverse selection of games that you can play, with a robust kids section. Cant wait to come back, and would highly recommend for families.
The drinks were amazing.Customer service was on point.Being able to play a game before purchase had me sold, loved it.Will push my DnD group to play here.
Best card place ever
Excellent place for card gaming. Friendly helpful employees.
A beautiful store/restaurant. Highly recommended.
Loved it. Good food good drinks good selection of games
We had a great time with our family! If you are concerned about having enough space they have amazing rooms you can reserve which keeps you totally separated! We played a really fun game that we ended up purchasing and had an incredible meal. Also tables are spaced out to give everyone comfortable distance to dine in! Great experience for us and nice to do something that felt somewhat “normal” (?). This could be a great date night, date day, family event, and I hope our next company Christmas Party location! :) All the detail in the store is also not to be left unappreciated - certainly nothing like it in Portland in my humble opinion! Honestly, pictures do not do justice...must see for yourself.
Beautiful store big selection of cards ands games. Planning to go back and try there food.
Great selection of games, staff is super knowledgeable and helpful
Very nice interior compared to other game shops I have been too. Food was excellent and plenty of space to play
The food and service were really good. its way too easy to spend a lot of money there. we got snacks (the hummus plate and the calamari and shrimp) and some drinks, and they were all great. we also borrowed a couple board games, and the staff was super helpful.
So great!!! servers were friendly and helpful and drinks were great :) highly recommend, hope to visit again!!!
There is not enough good things I can say about this place! The food was excellent the service was superb (Tatiana was an amazing server!!) and the location is gorgeous and well taken care of. I would recommend this place for anyone looking for good food and a great experience.
Great vibe and great food. Excellent place to post up and play some magic
