We heard good things from friends and swung in on our visit to Portland. The ordering process online was smooth and easy. We got a text notification when the order was ready - right in the middle of our anticipated window. We drove up and parked on the street easily, walked up and got our order. Each of us ordered the bagel sandwich with cucumbers, dill, capers, cream cheese, and of course, lox. The bagel was crunchy on the outside and soft in the middle and the flavors of everything was fresh and delicious. I forwent onions, and asking to exclude them online was also an easy process. The coffee was also good, especially on a wind torn day like the one we had. When they open back up, the setting looks cozy and inviting.

THE GOOD:The specialty bagel today was a garlic fennel type, and even though I couldnt really catch the fennel, it was very good and a super awesome crunch on the outside.THE BAD:1. The ordering system seems like a completely unnecessary complication. Plus they REFUSE to take your order at the window and force you to call. There are several restaurants operating in the area that dont require ordering ahead AND have less wait times for items far more complicated than a toasted bagel.2. They are VERY stingy with the cream cheese, especially considering how much more they charge for their vegan spread!!! $3!? You can buy a tub of Tofutti at Shaws for just $0.99 more than that! (Seriously, the name brand is $3.99 for 8oz of the SAME stuff).Im new to the area, so Ill probably try them again when they are operating more normally. I will admit that my expectations were higher because of the ratings on here, but maybe the best of both worlds is to just buy the cream cheese from Shaws and get a delicious bagel from them separately. However, I dont believe I will be choosing them over my normal bagel stop unless its closed (which happened to be the case today).

If you are coming from NY/NJ area and expecting that type of bagel you will be disappointed. The everything bagel was covered heavy with everything seasoning on top, huge plus, but the bottom had zero seasoning, huge negative. The bagel had a texture similar to ciabatta, which isnt bad, but different. Also it wasnt very rounded, but more flat.We had the rose lox which had a very light taste, but was great eaten on its own.It was a good bagelish thing, just different from what we expected. Definitely something to try out. Also just like every other place in Portland its busy!!

They leave you standing in the pouring rain to tell you they will not take your order in person and you have to order online. What kind of operation refuses to take your order at an ordering window? I appreciate health precautions, but this is an outdoor window situation. There is no clear signage other than ‘order the modern way’ and they’re rude to boot. Unfortunate.

The lox sandwich was good, no doubt about it but I dont understand the prices. For 16 bucks I was expecting a heap of fish or something to put it over the top, that wasnt the case. Again, good sandwiches but you can go to one of the other places and get good sandwiches for 5 bucks less.

Heard wonderful things about their bagels, would have loved to be able to try them! Went to pick up a dozen uncut, untoasted bagels for the office, and was told I had to use my phone to order, except I did not have a phone with me to order, so I was turned away. Make sure you remember your phone, otherwise tough luck on getting any food! They are a private business that can set their own rules, although requiring a phone call to put 12 bagels in a bag, even though Im asking from 6ft away and did not have a phone, seems like a silly business practice. But Im not a restaurant owner. To be clear, kudos to the staff for doing their job and following the rules. Shame that the owner wont allow people without phones (or who forgot their phone) to buy food from their establishment.

I’m conflicted. Awesome bagels, cool spot, fun stuff, but this is one of the worst experiences I’ve had in a while. The person at the window was actually pretty mean/annoyed that we were there and made us feel bad for coming, which is weird with a place that felt as cool as this.We ordered online and when our food was up they acted like it was a huge ordeal to find it in the back even though we could see it sitting right there. When we got finally got our bag of food, half of it had been substituted for other stuff (which is whatever, it’s a bagel shop) but we didn’t even get to choose our alternates and ended up with with a half bag of their weird bagel of the day.But wait that’s not all, we also ordered some swag which is dope as hell but that was a whole other ordeal. It wasn’t included with our food even though it was part of the same ticket and the lady was trying to tell us we’d have to wait for it to be shipped to us until she “got her manager to get it figured out in their system”.I’m sad to walk away from this spot with a bad taste in my mouth, please be nicer to folks, especially when they have to wait 30 minutes in the cold for their bag of bagels!

I really like this place. I only discovered it a week or so ago, but Ive already spent several lunches there with my daughter (who loves bagels). The people are friendly, the prices are good, and the quality of the food is absolutely first rate. I havent gone too wide on the menu, just a bagel sandwich or two, and a few lightly adorned bagels. However, I feel like I have enough experience with the place to say that they really care about the quality of the food they serve. Theres usually only a few varieties of bagel available: a good thing, because theyre all fresh. I have no doubt that the more elaborate sandwiches and salads rise to the same level of care and quality. Its just a basic deli, nothing is spectacular about the menu or the decor or the service, but its a very high quality stop off for a quick bite at breakfast or lunch. It is one of my favorite places in Portland, and one of the first places Ill bring visitors from here on.

I had a comically painful experience there, worthy of a Portlandia sketch. Enjoy.***After arriving right at 7am on a Monday morning on my way to work, I asked the employee opening up the shop about ordering. She told me I’d have to call my order in.I said, “I can’t just order with you?”“No, you have to call it in”“Okay, to place the order with someone inside?”“No to place the order with me.”….We were standing 5 feet apart on the sidewalk, mind you.“That’s kind of weird but okay.”I looked up the number on my phone and called. She stepped inside behind the booth and answered “Rose Foods” and looked right at me. I said, “It’s still me. I’d like to order a bagel.” And she said, “I’m sorry, I can’t hear you. The reception is bad where you’re standing.”“Well that shouldn’t matter,” I said. “I’m standing right here in front of you and can hear you perfectly well without the phone.”She answered, “Try standing back out on the sidewalk. The reception is better there.”…I was meanwhile AT the pick up window, behind the divider counter and still outside in the door alcove where a patron is supposed to be… this wasn’t a mask thing.“Is this some kind of joke?!” I asked, getting agitated. “No. It’s how we do things” she said matter of factly.“Well I’m not playing this game.” I hung up. “I’ll just have an everything bagel with herb cream cheese. Toasted please.”The phone rang again. She picked it up: “Hello Rose foods”, looked me dead in the eye and said “I have to take this order.” I then told her that was psychotic antisocial behavior, before marching off to go to Mr Bagel. This is a true story and some utterly bizarre, entitled, and bratty service… I don’t know this person working there and never said anything cross to her.Frankly Im curious how the owner gets away with conjuring such a completely disfunction system and empowering their employees to behave this way… I guess it’s just a crazy world and getting crazier all the time!

I wanted the most basic order (half dozen bagels) and it turned super complicated. I went to order at the window and was told to order online or on the phone. So I try to call and the phone wasn’t working (someone else was ordering). Then online it was wicked complicated to find the half dozen bagel order. I ended up ordering the wrong thing and they had to call and ask about it. Could have been soooooo simple. “Hi, may I please have a half dozen bagels. 2 plain 2 everything 1 poppy and 1 seasame.” Maybe 20 seconds in total to get everything set and ordered. Instead it was a 10 minute ordeal. Not sure about the food, I haven’t tried it yet because I’m too shook from this experience

The maza balls were good, but the soup a bit thin. The sandwitches options are limited, but if you like lox there are a lot of options. I love lox but turns out having so much of them at one time was hard to handle, I had to leave some. I was not impressed with the flavor of the bagles, I had better ones. Finally, the bathroom facilities are totally inadequate. There is one unisex bathroom shared by patrons and staff, there was always a line while we were there. I hadto wait 9 minutes and the saw the person go back to the kitchen. Thats how I know this one bathroom is shared by all.Two soups, two sandwitches, two soft drinks were 57 dollars.

Im frankly amazed at the write-ups this place is getting because it really is nothing to write home about. Growing up on great Jewish deli foods, I really wanted to like this place. On Sunday mornings, my grandfather used to bring appetizings (smoked fish) and bagels to our house. Portland has needed a decent Jewish deli. Unfortunately, Rose Foods isnt it. I was unimpressed with my first visit, with the bagels being forgettable, and no where near as good as those that can be found in South Portland, but it was getting so much press that I decided to give it another try. My husband and I had breakfast there, and were underwhelmed. He loves smoked fish, but couldnt even remember the place when someone asked about it. Very spartan decor and the food doesnt make up for the lack of atmosphere. At the risk of sounding snobbish, I can only imagine that the people who love this place havent yet experienced really good Jewish deli. If thats you, you might like it. If not, youll be disappointed. I dont plan to return.

Very good bagels and appetizing. Plenty of seating. Oooonly thing that gets me is that the patina of NYC deli falls away because the counter service is too patient and Mainey. You go in, you say what you want, you step aside: thats a bagel place. This is a Maine takeaway with subway tiles. I get it: no one wants this but me. And maybe its even better this way. But its a break in authenticity that for me, I mean, standing in line behind a couple with a stroller starting agape at the menu while they wonder how bagel stores work -- the facade crumbles and it all turns precious and cute. So yes, five stars for food. But if you know what a place that looks like this is actually like & how great that is, youre going to get cranky, as I just have.
