Worth the hype for the bagels. The sandwich/topped bagel was a bit pricey for the $10 price increase or more for getting a straight bagel with butter or cream cheese, but the pictured smoked salmon bagel was delicious. The bagels have a shatteringly thin and crispy skin - I enjoyed it, although I still personally prefer slightly chewier crusts in my bagel. The crumb was tender and had a slight sourdough tang - I enjoyed it, although again, I prefer a more airy and open crumb in my bagels.Does this make LA a better bagel town than NYC? No. There would need to be an entire ecosystem of very good bagel shops all throughout LAs neighborhoods, to the degree that donut shops and taco stands do.Does it compare with the best NYC has to offer? Yes, in terms of uniqueness and quality. I havent been to Montreal to be able to make this direct comparison (since they say its a Montreal style bagels). We went on an off peak time and only had 2 people ahead of us in line.
We really enjoyed the bagel. Texture and flavor was spot on. I appreciate the fact that they offered cashew cream cheese. I was surprised by the slim variety of bagels, and that loose bagels are limited to two per customer. Be prepared for a very long wait in line. Theres only one cashier and many dozens of foodies wanting bagels. If youre a foodie too, I recommend you go. You wont be disappointed with your purchase
The bagels are good although a bit salty, specially the burnt everything. The capers makes it extra salty. When we went, they had the sardines topping and it was instantly my favorite. Unfortunately, if I am not mistaken, it is not one of their regular options. What really ruined it for me is the wait. The line for ordering is ok, its fast. It is when you are already waiting for your order that takes super long. And to top it off, my order was accidentally given to another customer. Who is lucky to have an extra whole sardine bagel sandwich that she didnt order. As such, I had to wait another round for my order to be remade. I would come back there if theyd have the sardines all the time, otherwise, not worth the wait.
I’ve now come here 3 times over the last 12 months and the hype is still worth it. The lines are still worth it. Courage bagels are hands down the best bagels in LA. Crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. Pure bliss.I typically get the garden bagel and add salmon/lox on a burnt everything bagel. So good. I highly recommended. And they added more seating which definitely helps. You need to eat there; don’t take it to go. They will get soggy (unless you’re picking up a dozen bagels to go.
I’ve been meaning to try this place for a minute. Got up early one morning to get there at opening and there was a line already! I got the smoked salmon on burnt everything bagel. Amazing! Pricey! Total $17 with tip, but what is in price in LA. Amazingly fresh and well balanced! I may not be paying $17 for a bagel Every other morning… But I will be returning!
RUN! Do not walk.Thats how great their bagels are.Ok so from the start. I found this place on social media and after seeing how beautiful their bagels are I just had to get my hands on one.I read that the line could be long so I went prepared. People in line were so friendly. I feel like we all knew what we were about to experience and we were sharing that positivity joyous time together. Through the small window I ordered a dozen of their Everything Bagel and 5 of the Run It Through The Garden bagels since we were going to be a big group. While I waited I chatted with a few people who were regulars and they told me this place will ruin bagels for you forever lol and boy they were right. Not long after my order came out and they sure were right. I opened one box and I wish someone recorded my face because I was like shocked. You guys, the beauty of this bagel is like non other. I finally took a bite and there was a party in my mouth and brain. The capers were such an excellent touch. The crunchy bagel, soft cream cheese and the fresh cucumber and tomatoes on top. Oh and lets not forget the dill on top was the perfect pairing. And nope, they didnt stop there. They topped it off with some delicious olive oil on top and wow! Truly the best bagel Ive ever had. Ill definitely be back to try other combos
Worth the wait and price. Never had a bagel quite like this. Sourdough Montreal, Californian style. The crust shatters like a baguette or croissant like, lighter airy interior has an nice, open crumb with a tender chew. Got the hand sliced salmon with the works on an everything and a rip dip Burnt everything with the Jersey butter on the side, would recommend this order. Cream cheese is also made in house.Sunday morning 7:40 wait was roughly 30-40 until I got my order, not too bad.
All the hype and to me this place is just Meeeh, at best. Maybe there is too much oil in the dough, idk, bc its just way to chewy for what I want in a bagel. Also of note there is no option for a hot sandwich, menu was all fish options which is cool, but was hoping for something sorta traditional from a bagel place. Bagels were made in front of my eyes so that was cool to see, but over all 3.00 for an extra extra chewy bagel seems like an experience I only need once. Staff was super nice and friendly.
Excellent bagels and super friendly staff! Bring good company because there is quite a long wait (30 minutes for us).
Honestly I dont really know too much about bagels and its only time Ive seen the word, schmear associated with a food product. So why 5 stars? I use to get up at 415 am to go to a shared kitchen and get a van loaded and ready for the farmers market pre pandemic. The only persons Id see were Ari and Chris making their bagels. They were always hard at work but cheerful enough to make me feel not so alone in the world. Occasionally, they gave me a bagel for the road. It was warm and delicious, they were nice, Im giving them 5 stars.
What an amazingly good bagel! That being said we arrived early and placed our order a sesame seed bagel with cream cheese. And another sesame seed bagel with cream cheese and tomatos. Quality of the ingredients is top notch. The house made cream cheese was next level, so good! Now the bagel, crispy outside yet super soft inside. Possibly the best bagel Ive had in LA
Delicious every time - don’t let the line scare you - typically have bagels in hand in 40 mins or less!
I used to wait more than an hour for these bagels in the farmers market every weekend and they finally have a permanent shop! There is no better bagel in town, not to mention the imported organic ingredients from the cream cheese, to the lox, to the luscious heirloom tomatoes. They have just started being open on weekends and I’ve been multiple times already! If there’s a line, trust me it’s worth the wait!!
THE BAGEL HAS BEEN REINVENTED!I wish there were a couple of more stars because I would use the highest number available.Im Jewish, Im 82 years old and I grew up on Bagels, Lox and cream cheese. Ive eaten bagels in Jewish delis in New York, Miami, Chicago and Los Angeles; and I was in the foodservice industry for 20 years. I have a keen sense of what a good bagel should be.Most reputable bagel bakeries follow the same recipe. Theyre boiled then baked leaving them chewy and dense on the inside with a thin, firm crust on the outside. These break the mold. Theyre boiled and then baked but theres magic in the processing of the dough. The result leaves the inside still chewy but more airy instead of dense. The resulting bite is heavenly. And as youd expect there are varieties. As an example, the Everything bagel is completely packed with the toppings on every square inch of the exterior - not just the top.The bagels of course are the big story, however; their speicalty open face sandwiches are culinary delights. I had the Smoked Salmon sandwich. There was smoked salmon, cashew cream cheese, a slice of fresh organic ripe tomato, very thinly sliced onion, capers and generous springs of fresh dill. The wonderful thought of it haunts me.Theyre open from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Thursday through Sunday. I got there at 6:45 on Sunday. There were three people ahead of me. By the time I got to the window at 7:03, there were over 70 people in line.
We’ve been a few times, but today was even better than usual. Definitely try the Hand Sliced Smoked Salmon... we got lucky and had fresh everything bagels that were just made... the result was the best bagel and lox I’ve ever had. Eat immediately if that happens because it really pushes them into the stratosphere.Yes, there is normally a wait (20-30 min on the weekend) and they aren’t cheap nyc deli prices (nor are they the same type of bagel), but it’s worth the wait and the extra cash IMHO.
*by far* the best bagels I’ve had in California yet, including all over SF and East Bay— only bagel in CA to rival east coast, and in some ways even better. Incredible quality, excellent cream cheese. Soft, chewy, dense, and crispy textures come through all at once. Great flavor, both in dough and toppings. Could eat a dozen of these in a row so so good.
Best bagel Ive had in LA! Seems like every menu item is a variation of the lox capers etc., But if thats your jam I definitely recommend
Like many other eaters, I read the New York Times review of courage bagels (along with a few other LA bagel shops) and had to come thru to assess the situation.I showed up to courage at about 930 on Thursday morning and there was a solid line of eight bagel fiends waiting for their morning fix.Courage has a pretty little handwritten menu with an assortment of half or whole bagel sandwiches...they range from $7-15. Good job to whoever’s mom taught them to write - looks nice.I decided the best way to experience my first courage Bagel was to order an everything bagel not toasted with cream cheese…And I’m glad I did...the texture of this bagel is like nothing else I’ve had before. Well, actually, the experience of biting into a courage Bagel is most like biting into a fresh baguette – crispy (not burnt) outside, and fresh sour-dough’y interior. Not quite as soft as the inside of a croissant but getting close. The bagel (especially the top half) has good zesty everything flavor but it’s not overpowering.Their small team is working hard to keep up with the demand after the NYT review...so as long as you are patient, this bagel is more than worth the wait. Different from Maury’s and Pop’s which I think are more traditional NY style. You love to see it!
Pricey but very worth it! Staff so sweet. Offered the line of people umbrellas for shade while we waited in line. Highly recommend 👌 👍
Simply amazing. Absolutely worth the 1 hour wait. Bagels are somehow crisp on the outside and soft and airy on the inside. Im not a vegetarian, but the best bagel topping is the garden one. I recommend trying them all though. Scrumptious.Coffee with fresh coconut milk is tasty, but its on the chunky side so texture averse people be warned.
The Hand sliced smoked salmon on everything bagel was delicious. Easily the best bagel sandwich I have tasted - No wonder NY Times review rated Courage Bagels better than any bagels available in New York!I got there around 8:15am on a Saturday, and had to wait in line for an hour. It was well worth the wait! Cant wait to go there again.
So glad I finally made out here. I had the bagels when I visited Montreal. The bagel here is delicious. Well worth the wait in line
Ive tried most of the bagels in LA (grew up in new england so ive tried tons of NY/NJ/Montreal bagels) and courage bagel is hands down my favorite bagel in LA. not only are their bagels flavorful and perfectly chewy, the owners and staff are super kind and thoughtful. they have options for vegan and non-vegan which is huge for me.pro-tip:- be sure to get there early because these bagels are in HIGH DEMAND!- try out one of their bagel sandwiches bc they are NEXT LEVEL.
Go early or prepare for a wait, I got there at 720 on a Friday and there was already a decent line but got my bagels in about 20ish.
Its good. The quality of the toppings is what did it for me. Not willing to wait in the hellish long lines. Only worth it on weekdays in the early morning when lines are short. Side note, the employees are nice and friendly.
One of the best places in LA. bagels are 10/10
Not you average bagel. nothing like New York. that being said it was great. A little pricey but definitely worth the trip and the wait if the kind of person that likes toasted bagels.
Excellent bagels, awful staff who makes it abundantly clear that they have no desire to crank through their line of people waiting which is often 10-20 deep. I usually order their version of a toasted ‘hottie’ w/ butter which has taken anywhere from 5 to 28 minutes AFTER placing my order and waiting in their ridiculously long line. The entire experience requires over an hour. I wish I could help them because they have so much potential with a little training.
The bagels here are incredibly soft and chewy. Its different from any other bagel Ive tried, and it lives up to the hype. The toasted everything was really good and not as burnt as I was worried it might be. Well worth the wait!
The bagels are my favorite but had to take a star off because the line is SO slow. They need to find a way to be more efficient. They are serving bagels...what could possibly be taking so long?
Got there at 715a on friday morning. decent amount if street parking and a decent sized line already formed. was about an hour wait. the bagels are AMAZING. flaky yet soft.
Courage Bagels is straight up the best bagel in Los Angeles and quite possibly the entire West Coast. I love bagels — grew up NYC and have high standards when it comes bagels. This place is better than both Black Seed and HH Bagels!!!Go here! (go early)
BOMB bagels, worth the wait
Amazing montreal style bagels! even just an everything with cream cheese is incredible. best bagel in LA.
My bagels (All 6 of them) Were burnt and I had to go to work so I did not notice until it was too late. Also over priced. Won’t be coming back.
Incredible food, I highly recommended!!!
Really good Montreal style bagels. I can definitely imagine a NYT writer stumbling across this tiny, little reviewed bagel shop and writing an overly sensational piece about how these bagels are better than anything in New York or whatever they said. Are they great bagels? Yes. Is is worth a 15 minute drive across multiple neighborhoods? Yes. Is it worth an hour and a half wait. Definitely not but you cant let that cloud your judgement of how good these bagels are. The dill cream cheese is worth the $0.50 and for me the regular everything bagel had plenty of char and the burnt everything was overkill.
This place is insane. It will be the top ten of what you’ve ever eaten! Don’t think about it, just go!
As it the ridiculously limited menu items and unjustifiably long wait aren’t enough. I’ve been here 3 times and have had 3 different employees be insufferably rude and unhelpful. Beyond snobby, unhelpful, uninformed of their own menu/inventory and incapable of making any accommodations whatsoever. It’s actually sortve hilarious. The bagels are actually not bad. But unless you like un-toasted lox bagels with a side of abuse, avoid this nightmare like the plague
Worth waiting! Only spot that appreciate their coffee picket with his photo which I love!sesame bagel is my favorite.
It was a truly incredible salmon bagel with the best juiciest tomatoes. But the line just is not worth it.
Very delicious and expensive. You will be waiting in line if you go before 1pm
Im extremely selective about my bagels, and theirs was simply magnificent. Light, airy, and crispy. However, I wish avocado was an option, this is Cali after all.
Who knew a bagel Could be so good I wish I could start my day every day with such bagel
No bagel should take this long to make! RIP
Insanely good bagel. Best in LA for sure, better than easily 2/3rd of New York or Jersey bagels (I’m from jersey), I’ve ever had, and I’ve probably had hundreds
Best bagels ever, no question! Fun, fun, fun!!!
Wow it’s pricey and great - all at once
Best bagel I’ve ever had, and I’m not even from here 😭😭😭
Best bagel Ive ever had in LA (23 years)! Burnt Everything with salmon roe is Everything!
An hour plus wait, apathetic service, 20 bucks for a bagel/cream cheese/locks and a coffee, and a bland over-cooked bagel. Not recommending and ironic to me that a place called ‘Courage Bagels’ is an active contributor to the gentrification rampant in East Hollywood. Bring back Super Pan Bakery and their beautiful mural of indigenous women!
No veggie or vegan options, burnt garbage bagels, not sure why anyone would go here.
Good, just really good.
So so good, love that they are open face sandwiches so you can get half! Also their house coconut milk is so good!
Different than your typical NYC bagel, but really impressive.
I would never wait in that long of a line for a bagel! Really terrible service too.
They had opened about a month ago, and Ive seen Courage Bagels featured on a food show and on some IG feeds. Parked down the street, and went at 1pm on a Friday? The staff was helpful, bc I hadnt been there before. The sandwich, two open halves, was made with TLC, and the tomatoes they used were very tasty. This was a unique taste, with some fresh acidity, mild lox, and some great capers.Next time Im gonna try an espresso drink. Support this local biz... be kind since they just opened! The store is simple, but got a great vibe.
Classic gentrification rip off store. Bagels cost 10 bucks too much, and they burn em. 0/5
If you like Montreal style bagels you will like these, but if youre looking for NY style bagels, you wont. They like to burn thier bagels and Im not a fan of that.
Obsessed. we drive by to check how long the line is regularly. all bagels now pale in comparison.
The bagels were great, but no bagel is worth over a 40 min wait. Maybe on a weekday it’s worth it.
Best bagels in LA
Best bagels I’ve ever had in my life no cap
Loved this place...everything was great!
Very organized and the bagels are delicious!
The Run it Through the Garden was amazing, will drop by again
Amazing bagels!
I grew up eating bagels and lox in New Jersey/New York... this is a real contender.
No vegan options!! For a place that just opened in east Hollywood, that’s just crazy!
Expensive but probably the best bagel in LA. Your bagel will be burned, but somehow its better.
Simply divine
Good
Best bagels
Great place
Good begos
My bagel was burned and it was flavorless.
Crazy line!
The bagels here have a very different taste. I think it can be called a stick or a European-style bread bagel version. The outside is crispy and the inside is elastic. The mouth should be good or it will make your mouth sour after a long time.Salmon tastes very ordinary and expensive. Buying a single bagel for home DIY is also good, but one person is limited to two.
Its not really true, like Fairmont in the metropolis or Kettleman in Ottawa, and wheres the wood oven? But in California it is perhaps the best. In addition, very very expensive.
